A Day in the Life of a Windmill Keeper
While touring around Winseria, (Captain) and crew bump into Caesar refusing a job offer from a rude merchant. After sending the man away, Caesar shows the crew around while sharing what he knows about the old Winseria. As they wrap up for the day, the group runs into the merchant from earlier and save him from fallen scaffolding, after which Caesar suddenly faints.
A few days before the Grandcypher is set to arrive at Kreshstein Island, the crew discusses making a detour.
Vyrn: Hey, (Captain)! Wanna explore Winseria before we head for Kreshstein?
Lyria: We were just talking about how we should see everything while we have the chance, since we came all this way to a new skydom!
Vyrn: Can't exactly trust what those disguised Argents told us about the place either. Then there was that whole mess with the demons after...
Giving the idea some thought, (Captain) agrees, curious to learn more about the island's residents as well.
Vyrn: Heheh, then what are we waitin' for? Let's hit the town!
Vyrn: Seems like everything's back to normal already!
Lyria: Even though the fighting caused some real damage... The people of Winseria are pretty tough.
Angry Voice: Don't you get it? I wouldn't have asked if it wasn't important!
Vyrn: The heck? Someone's mad.
Lyria: Look over there! It's...
Caesar: You must first receive permission from the surrounding businesses if you wish to expand yours.
Caesar: I would be more than happy to assist you with construction once said permission has been obtained.
Caesar: However, I can see you wish to use my presence to intimidate your peers into silence, which I cannot abide.
Caesar: You'll have to look elsewhere if you wish to use tactics befitting of a criminal.
Greedy Merchant: Even after I said I'd pay your asking price! You killjoys are all the same, I swear...
As the merchant starts to walk away, Caesar gives the man one last warning.
Caesar: Regardless of who you hire, I would advise you not to threaten others.
Caesar: Or else you will be seeing me again very soon.
Greedy Merchant: Tch...
Caesar: I'm sorry for the spectacle.
Vyrn: Seems like you've got it rough...
Caesar: I'll be all right. I'm used to dealing with men like him...
Caesar: Especially now that there's no need for a windmill keeper when so many windmills are in the process of being repaired.
Caesar: I've taken to accepting all manner of requests in the meantime, which has introduced me to an assortment of interested clients.
Vyrn: Includin' pieces of work like that guy you were just with, huh?
Caesar: It comes with the territory, but it's nothing I can't handle. People like him aside, I've found that I enjoy running around for work.
Caesar: You'll recall how we often bumped into each other in other skydoms.
Vyrn: I guess... I just hope you're not pushin' yourself too hard.
Caesar: Your concern is appreciated. May I ask what brings you all here, by the way?
Vyrn: We just figured we should get a lay of the town since we're here anyway.
Lyria: We didn't really get a good look before since so much happened right after we arrived...
Caesar: I see. In that case, why don't you allow me to show you around?
Lyria: A-are you sure? We don't want to bother you if you're busy with work...
Caesar: It just so happens that you've caught me between jobs. My time is yours.
Caesar: Besides, I think you'll need my assistance. The settlers here know how to drive a hard bargain.
With Caesar taking the lead, the group resumes their journey through town.
Caesar: This section of land is where the settlers have established their places of residence.
Caesar: They leave during the day for work and return at night to rest.
Caesar: Though it's a quiet area regardless of how many people are about... which is a far cry from how the place used to be.
Vyrn: Used to be? What do you mean?
Caesar: Before the Ecksegrande war campaign, it was a bustling shopping district—one I often visited with a friend.
Caesar: But that's enough about that. We should move on before we get in these children's way.
Caesar: The land here appears undeveloped now... but it was once the residential district of Winseria.
Lyria: R-really? There's not a trace of a building anywhere...
Caesar: It all burned to the ground during the first wave of the Otherworld's invasion.
Caesar: That is why the settlers chose to restore the previous shopping district first, where some buildings remained intact.
Vyrn: I don't wanna think about how horrible it must've been for everything to get destroyed like that...
Caesar: ...
It's better if you don't.
Caesar: While this area is still within the realm of safety, please take care not to wander too far or else we'll start to come upon monsters.
Caesar: I know you can handle yourself, (Captain), but it never hurts to be cautious.
Appreciative of Caesar's concern, (Captain) nods with a smile and thanks the man.
Vyrn: Say, Caesar. We're gonna be stoppin' at Kreshstein next, which is where you're from, right?
Vyrn: So how is it you're born in Kreshstein, but you're also from Winseria?
Caesar: The Kreshstein royal family had a tradition of sending its heir to learn in another country at the age of six.
Caesar: When I came of age, I was sent to Winseria and spent around four years here.
Caesar: Most of my childhood memories were made in Winseria.
Vyrn: Did you have to hit the books a whole lot when you were a kid?
Caesar: To tell the truth? Not really. Most of my time was spent outside with friends.
Caesar: We would run around from sunup to sundown in the forest with bug nets in hand... I had quite the fulfilling youth.
Vyrn: Haha, I guess playtime's important even for a prince.
Caesar: Well, insect collecting is also serious business. You can tell a lot about a region's ecology from one insect alone...
Caesar: Everything from size to differences in sex can teach you much about how a species has evolved over time.
Caesar: Once you learn how one species factors into its local ecosystem and move on to the next, you start to realize how much there truly is to learn—
Vyrn: I guess even if you're not hittin' the books, you can still study pretty hard, huh?
Caesar: In theory. But everything I just said was beautified with hindsight.
Caesar: Back then, I wasn't thinking of much but catching bugs and having fun with friends.
Lyria: No wonder you came back to Winseria. It's filled with so many good memories for you!
Caesar: ...
Indeed. I owe much to this island... More than I can ever repay.
Caesar: At any rate, shall we grab some food in the shopping district?
Caesar: I know a coffee shop that serves a lovely croquette bread—only if you're interested, of course.
Lyria: Croquette bread? That sounds great!
Lyria: Out of all the towns we've visited, this has to have one of the most unique shopping districts I've ever seen...
Caesar: I'd wager that's in no small part to the settlers carrying the ambitions of two worlds on their shoulders.
Caesar: One day not far from now, their passion will spread to the rest of the world as well.
Caesar: Winseria is only special in that it is the first to adopt change, but it certainly won't be the last.
Vyrn: Heheh... I like the sound of that!
Lyria: When we get the chance, we should check on all the islands we've been to before and see how they're doing...
Caesar: In that case, please don't forget to stop by Oarlyegrande too.
- Even though I've abdicated the throne?
- If that's a request, we don't come cheap.
Choose: Even though I've abdicated the throne?Caesar: I'm well aware. I mean that you should visit as a guest on vacation.
Caesar: Even familiar sights can appear different with a new perspective.
Vyrn: Now that I think about it, we've never really taken it easy in Oarlyegrande...
Vyrn: Heheh, that could actually be a lot of fun!
Choose: If that's a request, we don't come cheap.Caesar: I'm capable of paying any fee you deem worthy. On my honor as the White Knight, I have more than enough saved.
Vyrn: No gettin' out of it...
Lyria: Ahaha... We'll have to pen it into our schedule!
Continue 1Caesar: But before that, you'll need to thoroughly enjoy all that Winseria has to offer. Allow me to pay for our meal—
Man's Voice: Aaagh!
Vyrn: The heck was that?
Caesar: It came from over there!
Nodding at Caesar, (Captain) leads the group toward the screaming.
Caesar: What...
Buried underneath a pile of wooden boards and metal beams is none other than the merchant from earlier in the day.
Greedy Merchant: H-help me... Can't feel my legs...
Caesar: We'll get you out! (Captain)!
At Caesar's shout, the captain rushes to the merchant's side.
Caesar: I'll lift the boards and beams off while you pull him out!
Lyria: I'll go look for a doctor!
Vyrn: Me too! Lyria, you head that way!
As Lyria and Vyrn speed off, (Captain) grabs the buried man while Caesar raises the pile.
Caesar: Goodness... What in the world were you doing?
Greedy Merchant: Couldn't find a single piece of muscle willing to help me, you see... All of them were the same mind as you...
Greedy Merchant: So I figured forget the construction. I can put up some attention-grabbing signage and decorations myself. But then the scaffolding I made didn't work out...
Caesar: I would have been happy to assist you with this, as long as your sign was within reason. Ask for my help next time.
Greedy Merchant: Haha... I'll hold you to it. And thanks for pulling me out, kind skyfarer.
Ow... Definitely broke something when I fell...
After making sure the man is completely free from the wreckage, (Captain) places him down a safe distance away.
Caesar: I must say, I hadn't expected a workout before eating—
Caesar: ...!
Greedy Merchant: Skyfarer! The windmill keeper, he's—
Hearing the loud crashing noise, (Captain) whips around to find Caesar now buried beneath the ruined scaffolding he had been holding.
Caesar: ...
Together as Friends
Realizing that Caesar hasn't rested once in the entire time they've known one another, (Captain) resolves to help the man. After Caesar wakes from a terrible nightmare, he explains to the captain that he is plagued by dreams of his time in Winseria and the Ecksegrande war campaign.
While lifting up scaffolding to rescue a merchant, Caesar suddenly fainted.
(Captain), who had been nearby helping, pulled the unconscious Caesar free and carried him home.
Voice: Pardon! I heard the windmill keeper... That Caesar collapsed!
Vyrn: You're that official we met before! Did you stop by because you were worried?
Town Official: O-of course I would be. It's imperative I assess his condition and determine if it will affect the work that needs doing.
Lyria: Well, the doctor said that there isn't anything wrong with him.
Vyrn: But for some reason he's still fast asleep...
Town Official: Even after the commotion with the demons, I noticed the lights were on all night at his windmill.
Town Official: Whether he was working or simply doing research, I couldn't say, but he probably hasn't slept well in a while.
Town Official: ...
Once he wakes, please tell him that he's off until next week. If you'll excuse me.
As fast as he had arrived, the official exits the room, his words lingering in (Captain)'s mind.
Thinking about it now, the captain wonders when Caesar last took a breather.
It had been one thing after another since they met in Nalhegrande, fought in Oarlyegrande, and dealt with the ascension to the throne.
Yet in all this time, (Captain) can't think of a single instance where Caesar had a moment to relax.
- You two can head to bed first.
- It's all my fault...
Choose: You two can head to bed first.Vyrn: Hm? Why do you say that?
Lyria: Is something wrong?
Choose: It's all my fault...Vyrn: Huh? What are you talkin' about?
Lyria: Did something happen with Caesar?
Continue 1(Captain) explains how Caesar has been working nonstop since the day they met him.
Vyrn: I guess he was looking out for you the entire time you were figuring out the king stuff...
Vyrn: And before that, he was running with the True King and fighting in all sorts of places. He probably hasn't had a vacation in forever.
Lyria: But I wouldn't say that's entirely your fault, (Captain).
Vyrn: Still, if I know you, you wanna make it up to him somehow, right? Whatever it is, we got your back.
Lyria: Just don't push yourself too hard, okay? Be sure to head to bed when you get tired!
Vyrn: Should get some snacks for when Caesar wakes up too! Wouldn't want the guy goin' hungry, right?
Waving farewell with encouraging smiles, Lyria and Vyrn exit the room as well, leaving (Captain) to tend to Caesar.
Caesar: What... was I...
???: How come you got to live... while my family burned alive?
Caesar: ...!
Caesar: Please don't...
???: Brother... Why did you leave us behind? It hurts... so much...
Caesar: I... I was with you... I wanted to...
???: I was wrong to name you... my successor.
???: Did my beloved really give his life to save you so you could turn out this way?
Caesar: Ah... Aaah...
Caesar: Ahhh!
Caesar: Gasp... Pant... Am I...
Caesar: (Captain)?
(Captain) swiftly offers the haggard man a cup of water.
Caesar: Thank you. You were there for me earlier too.
Caesar: It's all coming back to me now—the merchant and how I collapsed. I've caused you so much trouble...
With a shake of the head, (Captain) denies Caesar's words.
- You have to rest sometimes.
- I caused you more trouble as king.
Choose: You have to rest sometimes.Caesar: True... Very true.
Caesar: I won't deny you have a point, but...
Choose: I caused you more trouble as king.Caesar: Please, don't put yourself down on my account. You were a wonderful king.
Caesar: This has nothing to do with you... and everything to do with me.
Continue 2Caesar: I've spent my life avoiding sleep as much as possible.
Caesar: Usually, I take breaks at specific intervals in order to avoid causing issues like I have today...
Caesar: But with all the changes in my life recently, I've accidentally let those breaks slip right past me.
With a sigh, Caesar stares with a weathered expression down into the cup of water.
Caesar: This is a problem of my own making. Neither you nor anyone else is to blame.
Caesar: You see... Whenever I sleep, nightmares plague my dreams without fail.
Caesar: I've been like this for thirteen years. That's what you saw happen earlier.
Caesar: And while it may sound childish, that's the only reason why I avoid sleep—I can't bear witnessing the nightmares.
Looking up, Caesar sees that (Captain) simply listens attentively without judgment.
In a moment of hesitation, the man shifts his gaze away before he steels himself to meet (Captain)'s eyes.
Caesar: (Captain)... I hope you don't mind if I talk about the past for a bit.
Caesar: I'd like to tell you more about... the childhood I spent here in Winseria.
Caesar begins to share his story—one very few people remaining in the skies know of.
Together as Friends: Scene 2
When Caesar was six years old, he traveled to Winseria with his sister Julia and spent four happy years there. However, those days came to an end when the Otherworlders invaded and Winseria fell to ruin in one night. With the help of Winseria's last residents, Caesar and Julia barely escape to Kreshstein.
Caesar: As you know, I left Kreshstein when I was six years old. I still remember what my father said to me the day I departed...
Caesar's Father: Caesar. You'll be living as an ordinary citizen for the foreseeable future.
Caesar's Father: Whatever you gain from the experience... I only hope that you don't disappoint me.
Caesar's parents were known for their stern dispositions, which even their own children were subject to.
In spite of this, or perhaps because of it, Caesar and his sister Julia were extremely close, to the point that he secured permission for her to join him during his stay abroad.
Julia: Caesar, we're really going to Winseria! I hope we can make lots of friends when we get there!
For their first few days in Winseria, Caesar and Julia were regarded with curiosity.
But once the ice was broken, they quickly befriended the people of the island and settled into their new life.
Daniel: Caesar! Julia! My dad said he's baking a new kind of bread today!
Julia: Yeah? I wonder what he's making this time...
Caesar: The croquette bread he made before was so good...
Daniel: Hehe, if the prince enjoys it, then it's definitely staying on the menu!
Daniel: But we should get going. It's about time for a fresh batch to come out of the oven!
Julia: W-wait! Don't leave me behind!
Julia: Caesar, look. In front of the bakery...
Caesar: Notus...
Daniel: Maybe she'll actually have her wallet today.
Caesar: You know there's no way that's true.
Notus: Children these days have lost the simple ability to have faith in others. What is the world coming to?
Caesar: Gah! When did you get so close?
Notus: Hehe, as soon as I heard your lovely voices nearby.
Julia: Hello, Notus!
Notus: Hello, Julia. You're looking as adorable as ever.
Julia: Thanks! You're really pretty too!
Notus: See that? You boys could stand to learn a thing or two from Julia.
Daniel: Yeah, yeah. Anyway, what are you doing here?
Notus: Hehe, how rude... I was just enjoying the baker's latest batch with my eyes...
Caesar: Let me guess: you didn't bring money to buy any.
Notus: Must've slipped my mind!
Caesar: Considering I've never seen you pay, I doubt you have money in the first place...
Notus: You just caught me on another bad day!
Notus: So if you wouldn't mind...
Caesar: Sigh... Please pay me back someday.
Notus: You know I will. One day for sure.
Julia: Oooh! This time it's cream-filled buns!
Notus: Now this seems delicious. Perfect for an afternoon snack.
Caesar: Notus, why did you buy two?
Notus: I figured I could have the other for dinner.
Julia: Caesar, I'll let you have some of mine, so don't be so grumpy, okay?
Caesar: I'm... I'm not grumpy.
Notus: Well if he doesn't want it, I'll gladly—
Caesar: I'll eat it!
Baker: Haha, no need to fight over bread! There's plenty to go around! For regulars like you, I'll let you eat your fill!
Caesar: Thank you!
Caesar's time in Winseria was filled with peaceful days like this one. But like all good things, they didn't last forever.
Attendant: Prince Caesar! Princess Julia!
Caesar: What... It's the middle of the night...
Julia: Zzz... Caesar...
Attendant: This is no time to be sleeping! The town is under attack!
Caesar: Attack?
Outside, roaring flames consume the town he had grown to care for.
Caesar: Why... Who would do such a horrible thing?
Attendant: I don't know... But we should make our way to the ship immediately! I'll carry Princess Julia!
Caesar: Wait! That ship should be able to fit more than just us! We should look for—
Baker: Caesar!
Attendant: The baker... You're all right! Is the rest of the town...
Baker: They're... fine. They made it to the secret safety shelter built recently.
Baker: But with the fires in the way, we won't be able to join them. So come on, let's head to your ship!
Baker: Hop onto my back, Caesar, and hang on tight!
Caesar: (His clothes are covered in blood! What in the world happened back in town?)
With the children in tow, the attendant and baker run off into the night, toward the small royal ship that was moored for emergencies.
Beginning around them is what would later become known as the Ecksegrande war campaign.
Baker: The ship, thank goodness! Off you go. You can make it the rest of the way yourself!
Baker: Take this with you. I managed to grab some before my bakery went up in flames. Make sure you share with Julia, you hear?
Caesar: What about you? What are you going to do?
Baker: Don't you worry about me! I'll just be headed for that safety shelter.
Caesar: But you said before that the fires are in the way...
Attendant: Prince Caesar! We need to hurry!
Caesar: And all that blood on you. It's not yours, is it? Where's Daniel? And your wife?
Baker: ...
Caesar: We have to go help them! We might still be able to make it...
Baker: No, we can't... It's too late for them. They weren't fast enough.
Baker: Daniel, his mother who went to save him... Everyone in town who went for the shelter... None of them made it.
Caesar: What... do you mean...
Baker: Those bastards catch on quick! Hurry, there's not much time left before they're on us!
Baker: You and your sister are the only children left alive on this island! If nothing else... you both deserve to go home!
Caesar: But... but...
A harsh wind whirls around the group, knocking away the approaching Otherworld army.
Baker: Now's your chance! Go!
Caesar: Mister!
The attendant, though clearly torn, begins to drive the ship away as soon as the baker shoves Caesar aboard.
Caesar: Every island we passed on the way back to Kreshstein was dark—their lights extinguished, driving fear into my heart.
Caesar: All I could do was pray that Julia, who was still deep asleep, remained blissfully unaware of what was transpiring.
Caesar: At the same time, I held onto the naive hope that Kreshstein had been spared the same fate as everyone else.
Together as Friends: Scene 3
The young Caesar and Julia arrive in Kreshstein to find their father, the White Knight, gravely injured as the Istavion reinforcements barely hold the last line of defense. Julia perishes saving Caesar when the Otherworlders break through, but his despair becomes hope with his father's words. Caesar resolves to escape and one day return as the White Knight to restore peace and rebuild his home.
Caesar: Kreshstein's port, normally a bustling hub, was devoid of life when we arrived. Only roaring flames greeted us.
Caesar: The hope I'd felt earlier quickly dissipated as I came face-to-face with reality.
Attendant: Prince Caesar, I'm afraid I'll be taking my leave here.
Caesar: What? You can't seriously be thinking of going off on your own!
Attendant: I left my family here when we departed for Winseria... I need to see what's become of them.
Caesar: But by yourself...
Attendant: You needn't worry for me. I have experience defending myself. In the meantime, you should hurry to the castle. Do you remember the hidden path there?
Caesar: Y-yes...
Attendant: Then please follow it.
Prince Caesar, our time together was brief, but fulfilling. I'm proud to have served you.
With one last bow of her head, the attendant disappears into the mass of burning buildings.
Caesar sets off on the hidden path as instructed, letting his feet carry him as fast as they allow with Julia on his back.
Upon finally arriving at the castle, Caesar is surprised to find a host of unfamiliar soldiers blocking the way.
Caesar: Wh-who are you people?
Unknown Soldier 1: Children? Where did you come from?
Unknown Soldier 2: Careful, this could be one of them in disguise! Kill it fast, before it calls for reinforcements!
Caesar: Wait! We're—
???: Leave them be!
???: My sincerest apologies for their behavior. You are Prince Caesar, are you not?
Caesar: Y-yes, I am. But who are you?
???: We are the Istavion army, sent to provide aid to Kreshstein... To all of Ecksegrande.
Caesar: The Istavion army!
Caesar: If that's the case, you must hurry to Winseria Island—
Istavion Commander: We cannot. I'm sorry, but with the entire skydom under attack, we must focus our efforts on holding key locations.
Istavion Commander: It is taking everything we have to hold even Kreshstein despite rushing over as soon as possible. Not to mention the casualties...
Caesar: What in the world is attacking us? Where are my father and mother?
Istavion Commander: ...
Allow me to bring you to your father. I will deliver a status report on the way over.
Istavion Commander: Soldiers! This is our last line of defense—protect it with your lives!
Istavion Soldier 1: Yes, sir!
Caesar: Father!
Caesar's Father: Caesar? What... are you doing here...
As the White Knight, Caesar's father had been on the front lines at the battle's onset, but his might paled in comparison to his foes'.
By the time reinforcements arrived from Istavion, he had sustained grave injuries which forced his retreat.
Caesar: The people of Winseria, they... They helped Julia and I escape!
Julia: Father... are you hurt?
Caesar's Father: A little... Commander, did you bring them here?
Istavion Commander: Not to the castle, no. The brave little ones made it from the port all on their own.
Caesar's Father: I see... You've grown in the time we were apart. I wish your mother were here right now...
Julia: Father... Where is Mother?
Caesar's Father: With our citizens... in the safety shelter. You'll see her again once the fighting ends.
Julia: Oh... Thank goodness.
Caesar: ...
From the report that the commander gave earlier, Caesar is aware that the shelter had actually already fallen, with not a soul remaining.
Caesar's Father: Caesar. Julia. Pay careful attention to what I'm about to say.
Caesar's Father: Kreshstein won't last much longer. The Istavion army needs to retreat, and you will join them—
Julia: Eek!
Istavion Commander: They've managed to reach the castle?
Istavion Commander: Prince Caesar! You need to move!
Caesar: Ah...
As Caesar freezes below a chunk of falling rubble, Julia acts.
Julia: Caesar!
At the last second, Julia shoves Caesar out of the way, the rubble missing him by a hair's breadth.
Caesar: Julia... Julia!
Julia is pinned to the floor where he had just stood, her lower half crushed by the heavy wreckage.
Caesar's Father: Julia! We'll get you out of there! Commander, a hand!
Istavion Commander: At once! Princess Julia, not to worry—
Julia: It's okay... You can leave it... I can't... feel anything past my tummy...
Caesar's Father: ...!
Caesar: For me? But why...
Julia: I'm not like you... I'm not smart or strong...
Julia: You've got to be king... Make sure everyone gets to eat... tasty bread...
Caesar: Ah... Ahhh...
Caesar's Father: Caesar. You heard what I said earlier, yes?
Caesar's Father: You need to leave Kreshstein. There's nothing left for you here.
Caesar: N-no! I'll stay here, with you and Julia—
Caesar's Father: Is that how little you value your life?
Caesar's Father: Or do you truly believe wasting it here is the proper course of action? Is that how you plan on thanking Julia for her sacrifice?
Caesar: What does it matter? I have nothing left no matter where I go! My friends and my family are all dead!
Caesar's Father: That is where you're wrong. There is one matter left for you, and you alone.
Caesar's Father: For you are the sole heir to this armor—the one to take up the mantle of the White Knight.
Caesar: So what? What difference does that make?
Caesar's Father: This armor grants the strength to protect the peace of the skies!
Caesar's Father: I was not enough to do it justice... But you will do what I cannot. You will be the one to restore peace!
Caesar's Father: And to do so, you must run now. The True King will guide you. Forge you into the knight you must become...
Caesar's Father: Until then, please—live.
Caesar: ...!
Istavion Soldier 1: Commander! They've broken through the line!
Istavion Soldier 2: Those Otherworld bastards are advancing! Please, call for a retreat!
Istavion Commander: Prince Caesar, you're familiar with the hidden path to the port, correct?
Caesar: Y-yes...
Istavion Commander: Then I put my soldiers' lives in your hands. Please ensure their survival.
Caesar: But what about you?
Istavion Commander: I will buy you time.
Though our meeting was brief, I'm honored to have made your acquaintance.
Caesar: ...!
Jaw tightly clenched, Caesar never once looks back as he exits with the soldiers in tow. The Otherworld invaders would arrive soon after.
Caesar's Father: Thank you for giving Caesar the last push he needed.
Istavion Commander: I only did what I had to, to protect the lives under my command.
Istavion Commander: I only regret... that I couldn't keep my promise to you, Amar.
Caesar: Somehow, by the skin of our teeth, we made it to Istavion.
Caesar: Afterward, in order to become the next White Knight, I devoted myself to studying under the True King.
Caesar: Until finally, it was my time to don the armor. I swore on that day to secure the peace my father asked of me, and to restore my home...
Caesar: The rest is as you know it.
Together as Friends: Scene 4
After hearing about Caesar's past, (Captain) helps him finally fall asleep. The next morning, Caesar wakes to find that for the first time in ages, he hasn't had a nightmare. He asks (Captain) if they can continue moving forward together not as king and retainer, but as friends—the captain agrees without hesitation. When it comes time for the crew to leave, Caesar sees them off with a smile.
A heavy silence falls over the room as Caesar finishes recounting his tale.
Caesar: The nightmares plaguing me are from my memories of the Ecksegrande war campaign—or more accurately, an embellished version.
Caesar: I noticed that these dreams began right around the time I became the White Knight...
Caesar: Before then, I was probably far too busy learning and training to even dream, which led me to one conclusion.
Caesar: If I kept myself swamped with work as the White Knight, I wouldn't have the energy for those frightening dreams. However, this also means I haven't had a good night's rest in a long time.
- Your body won't last like that.
- You plan to keep living like that?
Choose: Your body won't last like that.Caesar: I appreciate the concern, but...
Choose: You plan to keep living like that?Caesar: I suppose years from now, my current lifestyle will be hard to maintain...
Continue 1Hearing this, (Captain) realizes something.
Caesar is in Winseria now not as the White Knight, but as himself.
Caesar: Myself... Not as the White Knight?
The people of the island have accepted him among their number as Caesar.
Yet Caesar has continued to live as if he is still the White Knight, putting his own needs aside...
Even though, for all his help during (Captain)'s time as the True King, he should know better.
Caesar: You may have a point there. I should be carrying on as Caesar these days, not as the White Knight.
Caesar: Living the way I have before serves no purpose...
Caesar: Perhaps somewhere in my heart, I already felt that I'd fulfilled my duty.
Caesar peers outside the window, taking in the nighttime landscape of Winseria.
Caesar: Thanks to you, my dream of reclaiming the skydom and bringing peace to the skies has come to fruition. But beyond that...
Caesar: I knew I wished to work in the public sector of Winseria to some degree, but I hadn't given much thought to anything else.
Caesar: You've opened my eyes... I realize now that there's a lot waiting for me ahead. My life has barely begun.
(Captain) nods, then lifts the blankets, gesturing for Caesar to get some rest.
Just like Vyrn did for the captain in the past, (Captain) offers to stay by Caesar's side while he falls asleep.
Caesar: Weren't you quite young when Vyrn had to put you to bed? I fear I'm a little old for such treatment...
Caesar: Well, far be it from me to refuse an order from the king I once served. I'll oblige tonight.
Caesar: I just hope that you'll find time to get some proper rest as well.
- Unlike you, I can take care of myself.
- I'll hit the hay once you're asleep.
Choose: Unlike you, I can take care of myself.Caesar: Ah, pardon me. I didn't mean to imply otherwise. Very well.
Choose: I'll hit the hay once you're asleep.Caesar: That's a promise. I'd rather not wake to find you collapsed on the floor.
Continue 2Caesar: Have a good night.
Without much fanfare, Caesar closes his eyes.
(Captain) remains dutifully by his side, until his breathing slows to a steady rhythm.
Caesar: Mmngh...
Sensing light past his eyelids, Caesar gradually returns to the world of the waking.
Caesar: Is it... morning already?
As he ascertains the position of the sun outside, Caesar notices an odd weight against his legs.
Caesar: What happened to getting some proper rest?
Caesar: (Captain), it's morning. Time to wake up.
Stirring at the man's voice, (Captain) blinks awake to find Caesar looking surprisingly at peace.
Caesar: I feel like this is the first time I've enjoyed the morning sun since I was a young child. You truly are remarkable.
Shyly, (Captain) responds that it was nothing for a former True King.
Caesar: Haha... It truly is a shame that you abdicated.
Caesar: Though I suppose there's no point dwelling on it. These days, I'm also no more than a simple windmill keeper.
Caesar: We no longer need to define our relationship as ruler and subject...
Caesar: (Captain)... May I ask you for a favor?
(Captain) nods without hesitation.
Caesar: From this moment forward, will you walk with me not as my king, but as my friend?
Seeing Caesar's earnest expression, (Captain) is unable to hold back a laugh.
Caesar: Did I... say something amusing?
- You don't usually ask to be friends.
- I thought we were already friends.
Choose: You don't usually ask to be friends.Caesar: It's not something you make a formal request of, is that it?
Caesar: I feel as if... Daniel once laughed at me for the same thing before.
Choose: I thought we were already friends.Caesar: Oh. Er... I see. I apologize, I hadn't realized...
Caesar: In that case, I suppose you're not opposed to making it official from now on?
Continue 3With a grin, (Captain) extends an open hand.
Caesar takes it with his own and gives a firm shake.
Caesar: I hope that we become friends who can rely on one another through thick and thin.
Caesar: Though should you or the skies require the White Knight's blade, simply give the word and I will lend my aid.
Caesar: For I am your friend, the keeper of Winseria's windmills, and the bearer of the White Knight's armor.
Caesar: May our friendship be long and fruitful, (Captain).
A few days later, the Grandcypher departs for Kreshstein.
From the port, Caesar watches the captain's airship disappear into the clouds.
Notus: You should've gone with. Darydara tends to get lonely, doesn't he?
Caesar: He'll be fine. We've spent more time apart than we have together.
Caesar: It is the people of Winseria whom I owe, and it is for their sake I am here.
Caesar: As the only child who escaped alive from Winseria, I must repay their kindness.
Notus: You're looking much better than when we first reunited.
Notus: What manner of sorcery did the Singularity employ on you?
Caesar: None whatsoever. I was simply reminded how to get a good night's rest.
Notus: Is that right? Well, I'm happy for you.
Notus: Shall I treat you to something to celebrate the occasion?
Caesar: Hearing you say that has jogged some other memories of mine.
Caesar: I lent you a total of 21,231 rupies when I was a child. Isn't it about time you paid me back?
Notus: Oh dear, I just remembered something I have to attend to. Let's chat again later, Caesar.
Caesar: Goodness. It seems there's still a lot left to be done...
Muttering to himself, Caesar leaves the open sky behind and makes his way back to town.
Despite the mountain of tasks waiting for him, a relaxed smile settles on his lips.
