A Giant in Search of Courage
Stumbling through the darkness of a cave, (Captain) and company bump into a scared stranger. The stranger introduces himself as Eso and explains that he is on a quest to prove his bravery. To help him find the stone he is searching for, (Captain) offers him a place in the crew.
(Captain) and crew find themselves in a dank, dark cave, struggling to go deeper when they can barely see the tips of their own noses.
Lyria: Waaah... Katalina, (Captain), it's so dark...
Katalina: It's okay, Lyria. This is just a musty old cave. No ghosts, no—
Right at that moment, a large, shadowy figure appears before the crew and blocks their path.
Katalina: Eek!
Lyria: Eep!
???: Aaaagh!
???: S-stay awaaay! Don't come any closer!
Katalina: H-hold on! Are you... a person?
Vyrn: Hey, big guy! Simmer down! You're actin' like we're about to eat you or something!
???: W-who... are you?
Vyrn: The name's Vyrn! This here's (Captain)! We're a crew lookin' for primal crystals!
Vyrn: What about you? What brings you to a spooky cave like this?
Eso: I'm lost... And I've been lost for a few days.
Katalina: What? In a monster-infested cave? And you're still in one piece?
Eso: Monsters don't scare me. What does is... Um...
Katalina: Yes?
Lyria: You wouldn't happen to be afraid of the dark... would you?
Eso: I'm not afraid of the dark! I just... don't like it much.
Vyrn: Whatever you say. You still haven't explained why you're here though, Mr. I-Don't-Like-The-Dark.
Eso: W-well, actually...
The young man named Eso explains why he's lumbering around in the darkness by himself.
Raised in a remote village, Eso is incredibly brave in the face of monsters and beasts, but terrified in the face of high places and darkness.
All his friends laughed at him for that, but now he intends to show them what he's really made of. With that goal, he's come to this cave in search of a stone described in village legends.
Eso: The legends say that a god sleeps within a special stone. I'm going to find that stone, and then I'm going to show it to those guys from the village.
Eso: That should prove I'm not some coward.
Lyria: Hmm... A stone with a sleeping god in it? That sounds like...
Vyrn: A primal crystal! Probably, anyway.
Vyrn: Hey, big guy! Do you think you can tell us some more about this stone? Where is it in this cave?
Eso: No clue. All I know is that it's a stone and a god sleeps in it.
Vyrn: Say what! You're tellin' me you don't know where it is, but you're lookin' for it?
Eso: That's right. It must be soft and warm, though. I mean, a god lives in it.
Eso: So I've been moving toward the warmer parts of the cave. That will lead me to it. I'm sure of it.
Vyrn: That's all you're goin' on? Just your instincts?
Katalina: What incredible perseverance...
Eso: Incredible? You think I'm incredible?
Katalina: What? No, that's not...
Lyria: You are incredible! You're facing your fears to find a primal crystal!
Lyria: That's super brave of you, Eso! I wish I could be like you!
Eso: R-really? No one's ever told me that before. It's nice to hear...
Eso: Wait, that's right. I'm a brave warrior, and I need to find that stone.
Eso: This search has been hard though. No one's seen it before. Maybe it's really deep inside.
Eso: But you made a good point. I don't have any hints to go on. What if I can't find it?
Lyria: U-um! Why don't we look for it together?
Lyria: We actually might be searching for the same thing.
Lyria: It'll go much faster if we do it together, right, (Captain)?
- I'd feel better if Eso came with us.
- The dark's not scary if we're together.
Choose: I'd feel better if Eso came with us.Eso: You would?
Eso: Then you can count on me. I've never lost an arm wrestling match.
Eso: I'll come with you!
Choose: The dark's not scary if we're together.Eso: I'm not afraid of the dark! I just don't like it much!
Eso: But working with you doesn't sound bad at all. I want to go with you!
Continue 1Lyria: Hooray! Then let's keep—
Eso: Eep!
Katalina: Erm... Why don't you come out? There's nothing to be scared of.
Eso: I... I'm not scared!
Eso—the giant warrior with a delicate heart—has joined the crew.
He'll surely demonstrate his fearsome might to the crew... after they leave the cave, that is.
A Light in the Dark
On their journey to find primal crystals, (Captain) and the crew stop by a market and receive a mission to take care of some petty thugs. Unfortunately for Eso, they discover that they have to enter a dark cave to do so.
Eso: What a huge town... There are so many people here...
Vyrn: Hey, big guy! Pay attention or you're gonna get lost!
The crew continues its search for primal crystals, stopping in a bustling market to resupply.
Vyrn: But I guess if we lost you, you'd be pretty easy to spot in a crowd.
Eso: There's so many people... My village could never fit this many...
Storekeeper: Hey, big guy! Yeah, that's right! I'm talkin' to you!
Eso: M-me?
Storekeeper: Yeah. You're huge! I can tell you're pretty tough just by lookin' at you.
Storekeeper: I realize it's kinda sudden, but I've got a favor to ask you and those muscles of yours.
Rackam: Huh. So this is where those people dining and dashing are hiding?
Katalina: Indeed. The storekeeper took one look at Eso's body and thought he would be the perfect one to deal out punishment, but...
Eso: I-it's a d-dark... cave...
Vyrn: Hey, you okay there?
Eso: I-I'm not scared! There are good people who need help! And bad people who need to be punished!
Vyrn: All right! That's the spirit!
Rackam: I... don't think it's gonna be that simple.
Eso: Monsters? They're not going to stop me. Let's go, (Captain)!
A Light in the Dark: Scene 2
After defeating the monsters, (Captain) and crew enter the hideout and find an unpleasant surprise waiting for them.
Eso: ...!
Vyrn: Hey, big guy! Are you okay?
Eso: I-I'm not scared!
Thug 1: The heck? Who're you guys?
I gotta say, it's pretty rude to barge in without saying "hello" first.
Katalina: Well, these people don't seem like upstanding citizens.
Eso: H-hey you!
Thug 1: Yeah? Whaddaya want?
Eso: You did bad things and made trouble for the townspeople! It's time for you to apologize and pay up!
Thug 1: Oh yeah? And why do we gotta listen to you?
Thug 2: Heheh... Look at the big lug. He's shakin' in his boots!
Thug 1: Hah! You think a chicken like you can tell us what to do?
Eso: ...
Rackam: I don't think these guys are gonna listen. Guess we'll just have to make them pay by force.
Thug 1: Heh! Good luck with that. You're in our hideout, remember?
Thug 1: Release the monsters!
Rackam: Tch!
Thug 1: It's feeding time! Starting with that big lug over there!
A Light in the Dark: Scene 3
(Captain) and company defeat the monsters. Driven into a corner, one of the thugs tries to explain their crimes away, but quickly reveals his true intentions.
Thug 1: Are you serious? They actually beat my monsters?
Vyrn: Heheh! Mess with (Captain) and you're gonna get burned! Time to give it up!
Thug 1: W-wait! Hear me out!
Katalina: You don't know when to give up, do you?
Thug 1: I just wanted to let you know we had reasons to do what we did.
Thug 1: We never wanted to dine and dash. Honest. But we had no choice.
Thug 1: ...
Thug 1: Heh heh heh... Juuust kiddin'! Gotcha!
Eso: ...
Thug 1: N-no way... How did he do that?
Eso: You tricked the townspeople... And now you're trying to trick me.
Eso: Lying is wrong. You've made me very angry.
Eso: Get ready! I won't stop until you apologize!
Thug 1: Damn it!
A Light in the Dark: Scene 4
Eso punishes the thugs for their crimes and lies. Absorbed in his battle for justice, he seems to forget the darkness of the cave, but only for a moment.
Thug 1: N-no way... Rgh...
Eso: Listen up. Lie again, and you'll regret it.
Eso: I know lots of monster dens with hungry monsters. I'm sure they'll welcome you with open arms... and worse.
Thug 1: Eep!
Vyrn: Whoa there! That's going a bit overboard, don't you think?
Thug 1: I-I'm so sorry! I won't ever do it again! I'll pay up, too! So please! Spare my life!
Rackam: Guess that solves the problem for now. And it's all thanks to you, Eso!
Vyrn: They're shaking like crazy! You really scared 'em, Eso!
Lyria: Yup! You're amazing!
Eso: Hehehe...
Lyria: Hehe. You got over your fear of the dark and really went all out!
Eso: Did you say... dark?
Eso: ...!
Vyrn: Whoa...
Eso: I-I'm not scared of the dark! I just... don't like it...
Eso: L-let's hurry up and get out of here, (Captain)!
The kind-hearted giant, Eso, continues to wield his axe in the name of justice.
As long as his friends light the way, no stormy clouds or deep caves will be too dark for him.
