Trivia

  • Eso's design is likely inspired by stereotypical depictions of North American Indigenous peoples.
  • In the original Japanese game text, Eso refers to himself in third-person. In the localized English text, Eso's speech is significantly changed and instead refers to himself with first-person pronouns (e.g., using "I" instead of "Eso").

I've changed since meeting you, Captain, and I'm going to do my best to keep moving forward.
I'mt truly happy you were born, Captain.

2

It is your birthday today, (Captain). Blessings to you.
We wish you great joy from the bottom of our hearts. And you should thank your family and ancestors.
That is what should be done on a birthday.
Surely that will bring in another good year ahead.

3

Happy birthday, (Captain)! What kind of year have you had?
I hope that it was a good one.
I pray this next year will bring good things for you too.
If you are happy, I too am happy.
And if I can be part of your fond memories, I will be even happier.

4

Happy birthday, (Captain). I hope you had another good year.
Your eyes are shining. You have become stronger, in body and mind. I can tell.
I have great respect for you, (Captain). You are like a wise chieftain, surrounded by your people.
I am sure you can do anything. Even reach Estalucia.
I will be here to support you. Even if I am not much help.
Please, (Captain). Never give up on fulfilling your dream.

5

Today is your birthday, (Captain). I made cake.
It's made from my favorite fruit. I hope you enjoy it.
Please eat up and take in the nutrients. And may you achieve your many hopes and dreams.
When you need help, I will be there. At the least, I will be sure to keep you safe.
I pray for continued good fortune in our travels together.

Happy New Year, Captain!
It feels good to have a fresh start.
This is a very important day to my tribe. The end of one year marks the birth of another.
I pray that my family and the rest of my people are safe and healthy.
I'll be doing my best for the sake of my tribe and my friends on the ship. Let's make this a good year, Captain.

2

(Captain)! Help!
Streamers! They popped streamers and long ribbons came out!
Now I'm tangled and can't get them off!
Help me, (Captain)!

3

We have journeyed far together, (Captain).
I feel like we have become family.
Siblings in arms and in spirit.
So for all of you, I must become stronger.
I will protect my family. I will cherish my family. And I will never betray my family.
Please put your trust in me this year too, (Captain).

4

I drew a New Year's fortune. It said "terrible luck." What does this mean, (Captain)?
I will have the worst possible luck... all year? I cannot... believe this...
Aaah!
Oh. It is only snow from the branches overhead...
I was not scared! Only... on my guard.
If I am cursed with terrible luck, then I must be cautious.
By the way, (Captain). Is a person permitted... to draw a second fortune?

5

Another year has passed. You've grown, (Captain).
So have I. I'm braver than ever before.
I believe I have more room for improvement. For sure!
And you will become an even greater person, (Captain). My gut tells me so.
Let us make this another fine year, (Captain).

1

Captain, did you need me for something? Sniff... Something smells good.
Chocolates? These are for me? Thank you, Captain.
But why? It's all a little sudden... For Valentine's? Sorry Captain, but I don't know what that is.
Still, I'm happy to have it. I'll definitely get you something in return.

2

(Captain)? What smells so sweet?
Valentine's...
(Captain), you're giving me chocolates this year as well?
Mgh... My face is getting all hot, but I don't know why.
(Captain), don't look at me.

3

You bring me chocolate this year too, (Captain)?
I thank you for your kindness.
I wish to become a kind, strong person just like you.
Please watch over me until I can.
I swear to become a man you can depend on.

4

You made chocolate for me again this year? That makes me very happy.
Your thanks makes me feel that I have done well. It gives me strength to work even harder.
I have not forgotten my promise to become a strong, kind, dependable man.
People of my tribe never break their word. Please just be patient with me.

5

You have Valentine's chocolate for me this year too, (Captain)? Thank you.
I realized last year how delicious your chocolate is.
Unlike store-bought chocolate, your chocolate warms my heart.
I am glad to receive more. Very glad!
You have my thanks. Please look forward to White Day.

1

Perfect timing, Captain. I searched high and low for this, and wanted to give it to you.
You knew today was White Day, right? You were the one who taught me about it. This is the day you give something back in return for Valentine's.
This is the first time I've done this, so I'm a little nervous.
You're happy, Captain? Thank goodness... I'm happy, too.

2

I have something for you for White Day.
(Captain), take this.
Of course, it's in return for Valentine's Day. But it's not just that.
It also has my feelings of thanks.
(Captain), thank you for everything.

3

This... is for White Day, (Captain).
Really, this present is not enough to show you all of my thanks.
Still, it is important to express.
Or so I think.
I hope my feelings shine through, (Captain), at least a little bit.

4

I made a White Day present for you. I hope you like it.
I am very grateful to you, (Captain). I almost wish every day could be White Day.
But eating sweets so often is not healthy. Maybe saving it for special occasions is best.
But that means I have more gratitude saved up. (Captain), thank you for everything.
Thank you. Thank you. I cannot say it enough.

5

Today is White Day. I prepared plenty as a thank-you gift.
In fact, I prepared too much and cannot finish it all by myself.
So feast with me, (Captain).
It'd be more fun that way. And I would be grateful.
You will? Great. Let me make us some tea.

1

Woah! Oh, it's you, Captain. You frightened me. Why are you dressed like that?
A Halloween costume? Ah, I see... We have festivals in which we don the dress of monsters and deities in my homeland, as well.
Hm? Trick or treat, you say? Is that some kind of Halloween incantation?
Understood. I'll do my best to get in the spirit of Halloween, too. Trick or treat!

2

The town on Halloween night is much different. It feels like another world.
There is not much light here. It is dim.
No, I am all right. Eso is stronger now. I am scared no more.
And I have the chant you gave me.
Trick or treat! With this there is nothing left to fear.

3

(Captain), do you have something to say to me?
...
I know you do! Today is Halloween!
(Captain)... Do you not wish for candy?
The word you want... begins with T.
(Captain)... Are you teasing me by being silent?
I prepared candy just for this! How could you!

4

I helped carve this pumpkin. What do you think, (Captain)?
The face looks too friendly? But I do not want to scare the children.
Oh, I see. It is a talisman to ward off evil spirits. So it should be frightening...
Wait. Evil spirits? Are there evil spirits here now?
I will carve a new pumpkin. A very fearsome pumpkin.
Not that I fear evil spirits! It is for the children. To keep them safe. I will begin carving immediately. For them.

5

(Captain), I'd like you to open this box.
Th-th-there's nothing inside! It's just an empty box!
Well then, (Captain)?
Eek!
I-I'm not scared! I was the one who prepared it after all... I was just a little surprised.
So? What did you think? Was my trick a success?
You believe so? Ah, what a relief.

Happy Holidays Cutscenes

1

Captain, is something going on? Everyone seems to be in particularly good spirits for some reason.
Happy holidays? I'm not sure I understand, but seeing everyone else having fun puts me in a good mood, too.
Care to tell me about these holidays of yours, Captain? I'm sure I'll have even more fun once I know the details!

2

You told me of what this night meant last year, (Captain).
So this year I know the proper greeting for the season.
Happy holidays!
Did I get it right?

3

On this night, the town sparkles like the starry sky.
I like that the darkness does not truly fall.
Not... Not that I am scared! But everyone can enjoy the twinkling lights.
So a bright night is best. That is all.
(Captain)... Why are you laughing?

4

I heard a mysterious elder dressed in red enters people's homes on this night every year.
I will not sleep. I will stand guard by the children's rooms.
What? The elder distributes presents to the children? Then... he is a good person?
I see. In that case, I should show my appreciation for his kindness. I still will not be sleeping.

5

I have a present for you: a feather charm.
I prepared one for each member of the crew to hand out on this special day. I will be Santa.
Their smiles please me greatly. A wonderful thing.
Giving them to everyone will take time, but I'll do my best.
You get the first one, (Captain). I hope you like it.

A Giant in Search of Courage

Stumbling through the darkness of a cave, (Captain) and company bump into a scared stranger. The stranger introduces himself as Eso and explains that he is on a quest to prove his bravery. To help him find the stone he is searching for, (Captain) offers him a place in the crew.

(Captain) and crew find themselves in a dank, dark cave, struggling to go deeper when they can barely see the tips of their own noses.
Lyria: Waaah... Katalina, (Captain), it's so dark...
Katalina: It's okay, Lyria. This is just a musty old cave. No ghosts, no—
Right at that moment, a large, shadowy figure appears before the crew and blocks their path.
Katalina: Eek!
Lyria: Eep!
???: Aaaagh!
???: S-stay awaaay! Don't come any closer!
Katalina: H-hold on! Are you... a person?
Vyrn: Hey, big guy! Simmer down! You're actin' like we're about to eat you or something!
???: W-who... are you?
Vyrn: The name's Vyrn! This here's (Captain)! We're a crew lookin' for primal crystals!
Vyrn: What about you? What brings you to a spooky cave like this?
Eso: I'm lost... And I've been lost for a few days.
Katalina: What? In a monster-infested cave? And you're still in one piece?
Eso: Monsters don't scare me. What does is... Um...
Katalina: Yes?
Lyria: You wouldn't happen to be afraid of the dark... would you?
Eso: I'm not afraid of the dark! I just... don't like it much.
Vyrn: Whatever you say. You still haven't explained why you're here though, Mr. I-Don't-Like-The-Dark.
Eso: W-well, actually...
The young man named Eso explains why he's lumbering around in the darkness by himself.
Raised in a remote village, Eso is incredibly brave in the face of monsters and beasts, but terrified in the face of high places and darkness.
All his friends laughed at him for that, but now he intends to show them what he's really made of. With that goal, he's come to this cave in search of a stone described in village legends.
Eso: The legends say that a god sleeps within a special stone. I'm going to find that stone, and then I'm going to show it to those guys from the village.
Eso: That should prove I'm not some coward.
Lyria: Hmm... A stone with a sleeping god in it? That sounds like...
Vyrn: A primal crystal! Probably, anyway.
Vyrn: Hey, big guy! Do you think you can tell us some more about this stone? Where is it in this cave?
Eso: No clue. All I know is that it's a stone and a god sleeps in it.
Vyrn: Say what! You're tellin' me you don't know where it is, but you're lookin' for it?
Eso: That's right. It must be soft and warm, though. I mean, a god lives in it.
Eso: So I've been moving toward the warmer parts of the cave. That will lead me to it. I'm sure of it.
Vyrn: That's all you're goin' on? Just your instincts?
Katalina: What incredible perseverance...
Eso: Incredible? You think I'm incredible?
Katalina: What? No, that's not...
Lyria: You are incredible! You're facing your fears to find a primal crystal!
Lyria: That's super brave of you, Eso! I wish I could be like you!
Eso: R-really? No one's ever told me that before. It's nice to hear...
Eso: Wait, that's right. I'm a brave warrior, and I need to find that stone.
Eso: This search has been hard though. No one's seen it before. Maybe it's really deep inside.
Eso: But you made a good point. I don't have any hints to go on. What if I can't find it?
Lyria: U-um! Why don't we look for it together?
Lyria: We actually might be searching for the same thing.
Lyria: It'll go much faster if we do it together, right, (Captain)?
  1. I'd feel better if Eso came with us.
  2. The dark's not scary if we're together.

Choose: I'd feel better if Eso came with us.
Eso: You would?
Eso: Then you can count on me. I've never lost an arm wrestling match.
Eso: I'll come with you!

Choose: The dark's not scary if we're together.
Eso: I'm not afraid of the dark! I just don't like it much!
Eso: But working with you doesn't sound bad at all. I want to go with you!
Continue 1
Lyria: Hooray! Then let's keep—
Eso: Eep!
Katalina: Erm... Why don't you come out? There's nothing to be scared of.
Eso: I... I'm not scared!
Eso—the giant warrior with a delicate heart—has joined the crew.
He'll surely demonstrate his fearsome might to the crew... after they leave the cave, that is.

A Light in the Dark

On their journey to find primal crystals, (Captain) and the crew stop by a market and receive a mission to take care of some petty thugs. Unfortunately for Eso, they discover that they have to enter a dark cave to do so.

Eso: What a huge town... There are so many people here...
Vyrn: Hey, big guy! Pay attention or you're gonna get lost!
The crew continues its search for primal crystals, stopping in a bustling market to resupply.
Vyrn: But I guess if we lost you, you'd be pretty easy to spot in a crowd.
Eso: There's so many people... My village could never fit this many...
Storekeeper: Hey, big guy! Yeah, that's right! I'm talkin' to you!
Eso: M-me?
Storekeeper: Yeah. You're huge! I can tell you're pretty tough just by lookin' at you.
Storekeeper: I realize it's kinda sudden, but I've got a favor to ask you and those muscles of yours.
Rackam: Huh. So this is where those people dining and dashing are hiding?
Katalina: Indeed. The storekeeper took one look at Eso's body and thought he would be the perfect one to deal out punishment, but...
Eso: I-it's a d-dark... cave...
Vyrn: Hey, you okay there?
Eso: I-I'm not scared! There are good people who need help! And bad people who need to be punished!
Vyrn: All right! That's the spirit!
Rackam: I... don't think it's gonna be that simple.
Eso: Monsters? They're not going to stop me. Let's go, (Captain)!

A Light in the Dark: Scene 2

After defeating the monsters, (Captain) and crew enter the hideout and find an unpleasant surprise waiting for them.

Eso: ...!
Vyrn: Hey, big guy! Are you okay?
Eso: I-I'm not scared!
Thug 1: The heck? Who're you guys?
I gotta say, it's pretty rude to barge in without saying "hello" first.
Katalina: Well, these people don't seem like upstanding citizens.
Eso: H-hey you!
Thug 1: Yeah? Whaddaya want?
Eso: You did bad things and made trouble for the townspeople! It's time for you to apologize and pay up!
Thug 1: Oh yeah? And why do we gotta listen to you?
Thug 2: Heheh... Look at the big lug. He's shakin' in his boots!
Thug 1: Hah! You think a chicken like you can tell us what to do?
Eso: ...
Rackam: I don't think these guys are gonna listen. Guess we'll just have to make them pay by force.
Thug 1: Heh! Good luck with that. You're in our hideout, remember?
Thug 1: Release the monsters!
Rackam: Tch!
Thug 1: It's feeding time! Starting with that big lug over there!

A Light in the Dark: Scene 3

(Captain) and company defeat the monsters. Driven into a corner, one of the thugs tries to explain their crimes away, but quickly reveals his true intentions.

Thug 1: Are you serious? They actually beat my monsters?
Vyrn: Heheh! Mess with (Captain) and you're gonna get burned! Time to give it up!
Thug 1: W-wait! Hear me out!
Katalina: You don't know when to give up, do you?
Thug 1: I just wanted to let you know we had reasons to do what we did.
Thug 1: We never wanted to dine and dash. Honest. But we had no choice.
Thug 1: ...
Thug 1: Heh heh heh... Juuust kiddin'! Gotcha!
Eso: ...
Thug 1: N-no way... How did he do that?
Eso: You tricked the townspeople... And now you're trying to trick me.
Eso: Lying is wrong. You've made me very angry.
Eso: Get ready! I won't stop until you apologize!
Thug 1: Damn it!

A Light in the Dark: Scene 4

Eso punishes the thugs for their crimes and lies. Absorbed in his battle for justice, he seems to forget the darkness of the cave, but only for a moment.

Thug 1: N-no way... Rgh...
Eso: Listen up. Lie again, and you'll regret it.
Eso: I know lots of monster dens with hungry monsters. I'm sure they'll welcome you with open arms... and worse.
Thug 1: Eep!
Vyrn: Whoa there! That's going a bit overboard, don't you think?
Thug 1: I-I'm so sorry! I won't ever do it again! I'll pay up, too! So please! Spare my life!
Rackam: Guess that solves the problem for now. And it's all thanks to you, Eso!
Vyrn: They're shaking like crazy! You really scared 'em, Eso!
Lyria: Yup! You're amazing!
Eso: Hehehe...
Lyria: Hehe. You got over your fear of the dark and really went all out!
Eso: Did you say... dark?
Eso: ...!
Vyrn: Whoa...
Eso: I-I'm not scared of the dark! I just... don't like it...
Eso: L-let's hurry up and get out of here, (Captain)!
The kind-hearted giant, Eso, continues to wield his axe in the name of justice.
As long as his friends light the way, no stormy clouds or deep caves will be too dark for him.
