Summertime Surprises

Eustace completes a mission for Ronan only to immediately be given another task: deliver a gift to Vyrn, Lyria, and (Captain). Upon returning to the Grandcypher with Ronan's gift, Eustace is invited to join the three at a festival in Auguste. When he accepts, his crewmates surprise him with a yukata to wear at the festival. The group get changed into their festival attire and head there together.

Ronan: How did it go?
Eustace: I gathered enough intel.
At a vantage point above town, Eustace is delivering a report to Ronan, his former commanding officer in their Society days.
Eustace: Topographical maps of the area, civilian activity reports, every route in or out...
Eustace: And suggestions for improvements—in the event you wanted to use the area as a base of operations.
Eustace: It's all compiled for you here.
Eustace: Take a look.
Ronan: You work fast.
Ronan leafs through the documents and nods.
Ronan: Not surprised... You're still as capable and unendearing as ever.
He lets loose a chuckle, prompting a scowl from Eustace.
Eustace: I don't need to be endearing.
When Eustace was young, weapons testing by the Foe took both his village and family from him.
Suddenly left on his own in a frigid landscape, he had one foot in the grave. That is, until he was saved by Ronan.
As a prominent figure in the Society even then, Ronan quickly took the young boy in and would serve the closest thing to a parent in Eustace's life.
Eustace: Even so, what do you think you're doing? You aren't my commanding officer anymore.
Eustace: Yet you call me out of the blue, dump this tedious job on me...
Ronan: No one stopped you from declining the job.
Eustace's eyes widen, and for a moment he isn't sure how to respond to Ronan's nonchalance.
Eustace: ...
Ronan: Why the face?
Eustace: Interesting how you say that after the work's done.
Ronan: Heh, I'm just pushing your buttons. But I do appreciate your efforts. Thank you, Eustace.
Eustace: Hmph...
Biting his tongue, Eustace turns to leave, but Ronan stops him.
Ronan: Wait, Eustace. If you're leaving... then take this with you.
Ronan produces a parcel and holds it out to his former agent, who eyes it warily.
Eustace: ...
You paid up front for the intel.
Ronan: It's not a payment. It's a gift.
Eustace: Huh?
Eustace: What's the occasion? Did you hit your head or something, Ronan?
Ronan: I said it was a gift. I didn't say it was for you. Have those crewmates of yours open it.
Eustace: Why them?
Ronan: Why not? I can be thoughtful sometimes. Give them my best, will you?
Eustace: ...
Understood.
His face a kaleidoscope of emotions, Eustace takes the parcel. Once the agent has left, Ronan mutters to himself.
Ronan: Heh.
Ronan: Has he not noticed it himself? His poker face has really started to crack... He's acting more like his younger self now...
Ronan: Funny that I'm reminded of those days too.
The thought makes Ronan's mouth turn up in a slow smile. For a while, he stands there, his gaze fixed on where Eustace had been a moment ago.
Lyria: I wonder what kinds of stalls they'll have...
Vyrn: Probably loads, with tons of food! Maybe even enough to fill you up, Lyria.
Lyria: Vyrn! Don't tease! You know that you love to eat too.
Lyria: How about you, (Captain)? What are you looking forw—
Lyria: Oh! Hello, Eustace!
Vyrn: Whoa, Sourpuss is back!
  1. Welcome back.

Choose: Welcome back.
Eustace: Thanks...
Seeing the smiles on (Captain), Lyria, and Vyrn's faces as they greet him, Eustace's expression warms in turn.
Lyria: You must be tired! Did your job go well?
Vyrn: You were gone for a long while.
Eustace: It was fine. Sorry I was away for so long.
Lyria: No need to apologize! We took good care of the ship while you were away!
Eustace: Did you now?
Eustace: This is for you.
Eustace presents the parcel to his three crewmates.
Vyrn: Huh? What is it?
Eustace: A gift, I'm told... From Ronan to all of you. Don't know what's inside.
Vyrn: From Ronan, huh? Pretty thoughtful of him to give us a present!
Lyria: Thank you for bringing it all this way! Do you mind if we open it now?
Eustace: Not at all. Those were his instructions.
Vyrn: Well then, what're we waiting for?
Vyrn: Whoa, it's full of snacks!
Lyria: Wow, they all look delicious! I want to try this one! And this one too...
Eustace: Is it only snacks?
Vyrn: Hmm... Looks like it. But there's a jillion of 'em packed in here!
Eustace: (Ronan... Don't tell me you see the crew as just a bunch of children.)
Lyria: Oh, I've never seen this kind before.
Vyrn: Huh, that's a first for me too. Some sorta bagged cotton candy? Could be nice to have!
Eustace: ...
Lyria: Eustace? Is something wrong?
Eustace: No, long as you're happy with it.
Eustace: By the way, what were you discussing earlier?
Eustace: I heard you mention stalls and food.
Lyria: Oh, that!
Vyrn: You heard right! We're makin' plans to visit a festival.
Lyria: It's for a local holiday coming up in Auguste, and we thought it'd be fun to go visit—there are even supposed to be fireworks!
Eustace: A festival in Auguste...
Eustace: I'll join you.
Vyrn: Wait, really?
Lyria: Not that we wouldn't love for you to come too, but don't you want to rest?
Vyrn: Yeah, you only just got back from that really long job...
Eustace: I'll be fine.
Eustace: Seeing you again has given me a second wind.
Lyria: Heheh... I'm glad!
Lyria: Oh, but I'm sure the festival will be noisy and have lots of people... Are you sure?
Eustace: That won't be a problem either.
Eustace: If we're together, the noise shouldn't bother me as much.
Vyrn: Awesome! Then in that case... Ready, Lyria?
Lyria: Yep!
Lyria: To tell the truth, we were really hoping to visit a festival with you once you got back...
Vyrn: So we prepared! Here's your yukata, Sourpuss!
Vyrn: Hey, not too shabby!
  1. It looks good on you!
  2. Wow, nice biceps.

Choose: It looks good on you!
Eustace: You picked it for me, after all.
Lyria: Heheh, looks like it's the perfect size too. That's great!

Choose: Wow, nice biceps.
Eustace: My arms? You think so?
Lyria: Looks like it's the perfect size. That's a relief.
Continue 1
Eustace: Are the rest of you not getting changed?
Vyrn: Oh, right!
Lyria: Eep, I almost forgot! We were so focused on getting to see you in a yukata.
Lyria: We'll hurry and get ready too!
As Lyria, Vyrn, and (Captain) scurry to change for the festival, Eustace waits peacefully on the deck of the Grandcypher.

Feelings Sparked by Fireworks

Amid the fun, Lyria remembers she'd like to get Ronan something as thanks for his gift. She asks Eustace for ideas, who finds himself unable to produce an answer and instead encourages the group to focus on the festivities for now, at which (Captain) suggests a shooting gallery. A crowd forms to watch as Eustace and the captain hit target after target, but their friendly duel ends abruptly when a target is knocked down by an invisible entity.

Dressed in their yukatas, (Captain), Lyria, Vyrn, and Eustace arrive at the festival in Auguste.
Lyria: Sniff, sniff... Sniff, sniff...
Lyria: Wow! All of this festival food smells so good!
Vyrn: Makes ya wonder where we should start first!
Lyria and Vyrn excitedly lead the group through the stalls, leaving Eustace and (Captain) to take up the rear.
Eustace: It's good you're having fun, but don't stray too far ahead. There are a lot of people here.
Lyria: Okay!
Lyria: But, even if we got lost in the crowd, you're so tall that I'm sure we'd find you again in no time!
Vyrn: You can say that again! Sourpuss is super easy to spot!
Eustace: ...
Not as much as Vaseraga at least.
Vyrn: Hahah! Yeah, with his horns and armor, we could probably see him from anywhere in the festival.
Eustace: Exactly.
Lyria: Oh, look, Vyrn! They have candied apples!
Vyrn: Did you say candied apples? Let's go get some right now!
The happy pair skip ahead, but it's only a few hops before Lyria turns back to face the group.
Lyria: That reminds me—I'd like to get something for Ronan as a thank-you.
Vyrn: Oh, good idea! He gave us all those snacks, so we should get him a thing in return.
Lyria: Maybe we can buy him something from one of these stalls?
Vyrn: Hmm... I don't think festival food lasts very long though...
Vyrn: Hey, Sourpuss! What're some of Ronan's favorites?
Eustace: Why would I know what he...
Lyria: Good thinking, Vyrn! Eustace probably knows him better than any of us.
Vyrn: Yeah, Sourpuss has known him since he was little, after all!
Eustace: I... have, but...
Eustace: ...
Eustace scratches his temple in uncertainty, prompting (Captain) and the others to exchange a concerned glance.
Lyria: Umm, we're sorry, Eustace...
Vyrn: Feels like we asked ya somethin' wrong...
Eustace: No, you don't need to apologize.
Eustace: Besides, we still haven't heard what stalls (Captain) wants to see.
Eustace: We can get gifts later. We should enjoy ourselves while we're here.
Eustace: Where should we start?
Eustace's question only requires a moment of thought before (Captain)'s face lights up.
At the captain's recommendation, the group find themselves at a festival stall with a shooting gallery.
Eustace: Think you can match my marksmanship, (Captain)?
Eustace: How brave. I won't hold back though.
(Captain) smirks, happy to see Eustace starting to enjoy himself.
Eustace: Let's do this.
Borrowing a pair of parlor guns from the stall, the two steady their aims on the targets within.
Lyria: Wow, I didn't think we'd get to see a duel between (Captain) and Eustace... So exciting!
Vyrn: (Captain) is a pretty good shot, but aren't guns Sourpuss's specialty?
Lyria: That doesn't mean (Captain) won't still win!
Vyrn: Are you rooting for (Captain) then, Lyria?
Lyria: Hmm... I hadn't thought of that. I want them both to win!
As Lyria and Vyrn watch with bated breath, Eustace and (Captain) begin to shoot down targets one after the other.
Eustace: ...
Lyria: Wow! You both hit the bull's-eye again!
Young Festivalgoer: Whoa, awesome!
Cool Festivalgoer: It's like they can't miss. I didn't know it was even possible to win so many prizes at one of these.
Vapid Festivalgoer: Wait, this isn't a show? They're just, like, that good?
Drawn in by the display of skillful marksmanship, a crowd of spectators has joined Lyria and Vyrn in watching.
Vyrn: Watermelon candies, urkin masks, shark plushies, and more... What a haul of prizes!
Stall Manager: Lighten up, you two! Don't tell me you're fixin' to take home all my stock? Think of the children!
Vyrn: At this rate, I don't see this duel endin' anytime soon.
Lyria: Another bull's-eye! Who was it this time? (Captain)?
But the captain gestures that no shots have been taken yet.
Eustace: No, (Captain) hasn't fired. And neither have I.
Eustace: Which means...
Eustace trails off, his eyes narrowing at the crowd around them.

Feelings Sparked by Fireworks: Scene 2

The invisible entity begins to plow through the crowd, causing widespread panic. With his firearm Flamek, Eustace sends small sparks out into the air, enabling the agent to sense the entity's movements. Through Eustace's instructions, the captain manages to subdue the troublemaker, but the duo's flashy maneuver brings all eyes back on them. Lyria and Vyrn offer to distract the crowd while the two make their escape.

Eustace: Neither (Captain) nor I had taken our turn yet. So why was the target shot down?
Eustace scans the crowd for the unseen third party in their duel.
Jumpy Festivalgoer: Aaah!
Cool Festivalgoer: Oof! What was that?
One after another, shouts begin to erupt from the spectators.
Jumpy Festivalgoer: Something just bumped into me!
Vapid Festivalgoer: Hold up! Whose hand was that?
Vyrn: Whoa, why's everyone getting all riled up?
Lyria: There must be something over there—wait, there! Over here? It's moving so fast!
Eustace: What's out there?
Eustace's brow furrows as he looks over the spectators.
Eustace: Can't get eyes on the target...
Jumpy Festivalgoer: Somebody tell me what's going on! This isn't funny!
Stall Manager: What's with all the ruckus around my stall? This is bad for business!
Young Festivalgoer: Mommy, I'm scared!
Lyria: Everyone is panicking. We have to act fast before things get out of hand!
Vyrn: But I don't see anything. How can we stop it when we don't even know what's goin' on?
Lyria: There must be a way to stop whatever it is from plowing through the crowd...
(Captain) joins them in scrutinizing the area to spot who or what is causing the commotion.
Eustace: (Captain).
Eustace lays a steady hand on the captain's shoulder.
Eustace: Ready an attack... Wait for my signal.
(Captain) nods and prepares to respond at a moment's notice.
Eustace: Flamek...
As Eustace's hand comes into contact with his trusty firearm, small sparks fly into the air.
Eustace: ...!
Vapid Festivalgoer: Yeow! I just got, like, zapped!
Vapid Festivalgoer: Now I have to worry about static too? Gimme a break already.
What look to be thin strands of light course through the crowd, popping and crackling every so often, like sparklers in the night.
Eustace: ...
Target acquired.
The agent's low voice draws the captain's concentration away from the crowd and back onto Eustace.
Eustace: (Captain), take two steps back. I'll lead it to you.
(Captain) follows Eustace's instructions and prepares to strike on his next signal.
Cool Festivalgoer: Ouch! I got shocked again!
Vapid Festivalgoer: What was that flash?
The strands of light weave through the crowd in pursuit of the unseen target, gradually corralling it toward (Captain).
Finally...
Eustace: Here it comes... Now, (Captain)!
The captain sees only empty sky but heeds Eustace's command, striking without hesitation.
Vyrn: Huh? What just happened there?
  1. Did I get it?
  2. It felt like I grazed something...

Choose: Did I get it?
Eustace: Looks like it. Problem should be solved now.

Choose: It felt like I grazed something...
Eustace: I knew you would. Well done.
Continue 1
Young Festivalgoer: Did you see that? It was like bzzzt and then pop, bang!
Jumpy Festivalgoer: Could it have been a bunch of stray fireworks?
Cool Festivalgoer: Here? Besides, the show isn't supposed to start for a bit...
Vapid Festivalgoer: Oh! Maybe it was, like, a surprise warm-up?
Lyria: It seems like Eustace and the captain solved the problem.
Vyrn: But it's brought all the attention back on them.
Vapid Festivalgoer: Did you guys, like, have a hand in that light show just now?
Cool Festivalgoer: We know they've got the aim for it at least!
Eustace: ...
Vyrn: Uh-oh, the crowd's laser-focused on Sourpuss and (Captain).
Lyria: Eustace doesn't like this kind of attention, does he? We should help him...
Realizing the situation, (Captain) jumps in front of Eustace to somewhat shield him from the multitude of onlookers.
The captain then grabs Eustace's hand and spins to pull him out of the crowd.
Eustace: ...!
(Captain)?
But something catches on (Captain)'s foot, hurtling the captain midspin backward into Eustace's arms.
Eustace: What caused—
Eustace: Ah, your sandal strap. It must've gotten torn earlier.
Eustace: That will make walking difficult...
Young Festivalgoer: Hey! What're you guys gonna do next?
Cool Festivalgoer: Yeah, I wanna see you do more rad stuff! That's the best part about festivals!
Stall Manager: C'mon, sharpshooters! Don't tell me you're callin' it quits already.
Eustace: Sigh...
Vyrn: (Captain), Eustace!
Lyria: Leave this to us!
Whispering to the captain and Eustace, Vyrn and Lyria jump into action, ready to serve as their crewmates' privacy guardians.
Vyrn: There'll be no end to it if you guys stay here standin' like that, so get goin' already!
Eustace: Thank you...
Eustace: Here, (Captain).
In one fluid motion, Eustace grabs an urkin mask from their sack of prizes and slips it onto (Captain)'s head.
Eustace: To hide your face. Bear with me for a moment.

Feelings Sparked by Fireworks: Scene 3

Eustace and (Captain) escape to a secluded beach away from the festival. For a moment, the two soak in the peace and quiet. When fireworks begin to glimmer in the night sky, Eustace mentions their use in appeasing departed souls before opening up about his late family. After sharing his memories of Ronan, Eustace then reveals he wishes to further cherish those in his present—a mindset change made possible by (Captain) and the crew.

Eustace: Here we go.
Having concealed the captain's face with an urkin mask, Eustace shifts (Captain) in his arms.
In a flash, he zips both of them away from the crowd of spectators.
Eustace: Should be enough distance...
Arriving at a beach far from the hustle and bustle of the festival, Eustace sets (Captain) down gently.
Eustace: ...
For a moment, the pair bask in the much-needed calm and listen to the waves gently rolling ashore.
Eventually, (Captain) leans over and asks Eustace about his earlier usage of Flamek.
As he listens to the captain's question, Eustace's hand moves to rest on the weapon's familiar grip.
Eustace: I generated a tiny amount of lightning with Flamek and discharged it around us.
Eustace: To anyone it touches, it'd feel no different than a static shock...
Eustace: But that moment of contact is conveyed back to me—even if I can't see the target.
(Captain) nods with understanding.
  1. Clever.
  2. When'd you learn that?

Choose: Clever.
Eustace: Think so?
Eustace: I've been testing other techniques with Flamek—ones that aren't attacks or flashy bursts of lightning.

Choose: When'd you learn that?
Eustace: You and the rest of your crew are honing your skills day by day.
Eustace: I have to keep improving too, or I'll get left in the dust.
Continue 1
Eustace: But... I still haven't perfected that trick.
Eustace: It requires intense focus to keep the discharge steady and sense the responses, so I can't really use it when I'm on my own.
Eustace: Having you there helped.
  1. I'm glad.
  2. I could say the same.

Choose: I'm glad.
Eustace: Knew I could count on you.

Choose: I could say the same.
Eustace: We made a good team.
Continue 2
Just then, in the distant sky, what was darkness begins to fill with glittering fireworks soaring up from below.
Eustace: ...
The view before them is vibrant—each burst of light painting the black canvas with another color.
Eustace: You know, some say fireworks were used to appease departed souls.
Eustace: Well, and for festivals too.
Eustace continues, his deep voice filling the lulls between the whistles and bangs from the dazzling streaks above.
Eustace: That... thing we couldn't see, the one that frightened the crowd?
Eustace: It caused a stir, but nothing beyond some mischief. I didn't see anyone injured either.
Eustace: I wonder...
Eustace: Was it some kind of spirit that wandered here, drawn in by the festivities?
As the fireworks' lights dance across Eustace's upturned face, in the shadows they cast over his profile, something seems to waver.
  1. Are you missing your family?
  2. Does it still hurt?

Choose: Are you missing your family?
Eustace squints, examining (Captain)'s question in front of him.
Eustace: Miss isn't quite the right word.
Eustace: After all, there's not much point in wishing for something you know can't happen.
Eustace: But I do hope they're at peace.
Eustace: Right now, however...

Choose: Does it still hurt?
Eustace looks down for a moment, pondering (Captain)'s question.
Eustace: Who's to say. There are some parts I'll never come to terms with...
Eustace: But I know I don't feel the pain as much as I used to.
Eustace: Either way, right now...
Continue 3
Eustace: More than the people I've lost, my mind is on the ones who've chosen to stick with me all this time.
Eustace: I've been thinking, lately, that maybe I should do more to cherish them.
Eustace: And not take for granted the time we have together.
Eustace: It's thanks to my journeys with you and your crew that I've realized that.
Eustace: That box of snacks he—Ronan—had me give you... It contained something special to me.
Lyria: Oh, I've never seen this kind before.
Vyrn: Huh, that's a first for me too. Some sorta bagged cotton candy? Could be nice to have!
Eustace: ...
Eustace: Ronan first gave me some not long after he found me.
Eustace: I was taken with how it was sweet yet dense like freshly packed snow, and how it melted in my mouth...
Eustace: I probably told him I liked it.
Eustace: After that, he'd often buy me cotton candy and leave it in my room.
Eustace: Today was the first time I'd seen any in a long time...
(Captain) smiles, watching and listening as Eustace revisits fond childhood memories he'd all but forgotten.
The captain prods, "I'm sure Ronan slipped it in there so you could have it again."
Eustace: He's... hard to read.
Eustace lets out a deep breath, his shoulders relaxing. He peers into the sack filled with their shooting gallery winnings.
Eustace: Guess this works as a souvenir for Ronan.
From the bag, he pulls out a stuffed shark so huge it'd need to be held with both arms.
Eustace: Couldn't answer when you asked me what kind of things he'd like, after all.
The agent punctuates his statement with a shrug. (Captain) replies, "He'd probably just be happy you picked something out for him."
Eustace: Who knows.
Eustace sighs, the sound twinged by the slightest smile and soon scattered to the wind by the booming pyrotechnics.
The fireworks display carries on, illuminating the night sky and coastline in a multitude of colors.
And from the shimmering explosions, a whiff of gunpowder drifts on the breeze.
In this moment of peace, so vividly adorned, Eustace and (Captain) fall silent and simply pass the time together.
Eustace and (Captain) sit there in silence, soaking in the vibrant yet peaceful scene.
