Hometown Guide
Before summer vacation, Gwynne and the crew visit her hometown to help with a festival, but her parents' misunderstanding leads them to enjoy it instead. Seeing how excited Lyria and the others are, Gwynne offers to show them around and changes into a yukata.
Summer vacation season is almost here. However...
(Captain) and the crew have set a course not for Auguste, but for a certain island.
Gwynne: I'm sorry, (Captain). I know I'm asking a lot.
Vyrn: Aw, don't sweat it! But I gotta admit, I was surprised when you suddenly asked us to let you visit home.
Lyria: So when you say "home," you mean your parents' house, right, Gwynne?
Gwynne: Yeah. My family runs a little restaurant, and we put up a food stall for the festival every year. I wanted to go help with that.
Lyria: Ooh, there's a festival?
Gwynne: The Halloween festival back home is a big event, but the summer one is always busy too.
Gwynne: It's a big time of year for the restaurant, so Mom and Dad are both working hard. Besides, I've been wanting to visit for a while now.
Vyrn: Guess ya haven't had many chances to go home, huh?
Gwynne: This is the first time I've been able to go back for the festival since joining the Society. Between training and... everything else, there just wasn't a chance.
Gwynne: If I'm going all that way, the least I can do is pitch in and lighten their workload.
Gwynne gazes into the distance with a smile, and the crew members trade knowing looks.
Lyria: If that's why we're going, we'd be happy to help as well!
Gwynne: Are you sure? But what about Auguste?
Vyrn: It's fine! Auguste ain't going anywhere, it can wait!
Gwynne: N-No, really! I couldn't ask you to do that!
Gwynne: You're already making a detour for me. I can't let you do any work on top of that!
Choose: I want to check out the festival!
Lyria: Me too! I'd love to see what sort of festival it is!
Choose: I want to meet your parents!
Gwynne: Huh? Wh-why? It doesn't need to be that big a deal!
Vyrn: Relax. Besides, we've got experience helping with festival stalls!
Lyria: Right! And I wanted to see what sort of festival it is!
Continue 1Gwynne: I wouldn't get your hopes up too much. It's a pretty ordinary small-town festival.
Vyrn: Maybe, but you've been wanting to go for ages, right?
Vyrn: You can't tell us that and expect us not to be interested!
Lyria: Listening to you talk about it has gotten me excited to see it too!
Gwynne: Haha, honestly. How could I say no when you both look so excited?
Gwynne: All right. Let's all go together.
Gwynne: Even if you don't help, I'd still like you all to enjoy the festival.
And so, (Captain) and the crew accompany Gwynne to the island where she was raised. When they arrive...
Gwynne's Father: Well, look who's home! Welcome back, Gwynne. Hm? Could this be...
Gwynne: Dad! I'm hom—
Gwynne's Father: Hey, get out here! Gwynne's home, and she brought (Captain)!
Vyrn: Uh? Wh-what's going on?
Gwynne's Mother: My, if it isn't (Captain)! And everyone from the crew as well! How kind of you to come!
Gwynne's Mother: You must be hungry after such a long trip! Come, we have some food for the stall!
Gwynne: M-Mom! It's fine, really! You don't have to make a fuss!
Gwynne's Mother: Don't be silly. These are the captain and crew members who've been looking after you!
Gwynne's Father: Easy there. You'll spoil things for (Captain).
Gwynne: Exactly! You're making everyone—
Gwynne's Father: If they've come all this way at this time of year, they must be here to enjoy the festival.
Gwynne's Father: We've gotta leave them something to look forward to at the stall!
Gwynne: Dad! That's not what I meant!
Gwynne's Father: And don't you worry, Gwynne. Your favorite stall is back again this year!
Gwynne: You're missing the point! I came to help, not just enjoy the festival!
Gwynne's Mother: Help?
Gwynne: Yes! With the restaurant! You're gonna be busy with the festival stall, right?
Gwynne's Father: No need, no need! You came all the way to the island, just enjoy yourselves!
Vyrn: A-Are you sure?
Gwynne's Father: Of course. You haven't been to the festival in ages either, have you, Gwynne?
Gwynne: That's true, but...
Gwynne's Mother: Oh, I know! A yukata boutique store just opened nearby. Why don't you stop by while you're here?
Gwynne's Father: That's a fine idea! Now run along before night falls!
Gwynne: Now wait, just a sec—
Gwynne: ...
Gwynne: Um... I'm sorry. This ended up being a bit awkward.
Gwynne: I guess my parents just got excited when they saw you and the crew, (Captain).
Lyria: Ahaha... Don't worry, it's no problem at all!
Vyrn: Ain't this actually a good thing? Now ya can enjoy the festival without feelin' guilty!
Lyria: That's right! We'll have much more fun if you're with us, Gwynne!
Gwynne: Vyrn... Lyria...
Gwynne: I guess you're right. Then I'd better make sure you all enjoy it as much as possible.
Gwynne: Let me show you around.
Gwynne: I grew up around food, so I already know where the good stalls are.
Vyrn: Sounds good! Show us the good stuff!
Lyria: Let's start by finding you a yukata!
Gwynne: Ah... Haha, good idea. Since we're here, maybe we should all wear one.
Vyrn: Your mom said there was a yukata place around here. Let's go check it out!
Lyria and Vyrn happily follow after Gwynne as they set out together.
Gwynne: It really has been a while since I dressed up for this festival.
Gwynne: What do you think?
Lyria: Oh, Gwynne, you look wonderful!
Vyrn: I'll say! Looks real good on ya!
Gwynne: I-I don't really know what to do with all these compliments...
Choose: You look lovely.
Choose: That looks perfect on you!
Gwynne: Um... Sorry. Thanks...
Vyrn: Gotta say, I didn't expect you to look this different dressed up.
Gwynne: I-I don't think I look that different...
Lyria: No, you do! You're very elegant in a yukata!
Gwynne: Um, c-can we get going now? I really don't need all these compliments...
Choose: But it really is cute.
Gwynne: Wh-what?
Gwynne: (Captain), you really shouldn't say things like that!
Gwynne: Rumors about girls spread like wildfire even if they're baseless, you know!
A faint blush rises on Gwynne's cheeks before she gives (Captain) a push from behind.
With Gwynne as their guide, (Captain) and the crew step into the festival, ready to make the most of the summer day ahead.
After Destiny
Gwynne notes that the festival's main event starts after dark, and takes (Captain) to the food stalls. She pouts when the captain hits the jackpot at a chicken skewer stand where portions are decided by lottery, but thoroughly enjoys herself. Suddenly, a voice calls Gwynne's name.
With Gwynne at their side, (Captain) and the crew members make their way to the festival in her hometown.
As the sun dips toward the horizon, the stall-lined streets are overflowing with festivalgoers.
Gwynne: Wow... This is a lot busier than it used to be.
Lyria: There are so many people! And all the food looks so good!
Vyrn: Hey, look! They've got candy apples over there!
Gwynne: Don't get too excited too soon. The main event starts after dark, so let's pace ourselves.
Vyrn: After dark? What, is there a fireworks show or somethin'?
Gwynne: No. It's more like the opposite, actually. Forget fireworks...
Gwynne: Actually, I'll explain that part later.
Lyria: What is it? Is something going to happen?
Gwynne: Hehe, I'm not telling. It's more fun if the surprise isn't spoiled.
Gwynne: For now, we should enjoy the stalls.
Gwynne: Let's see, where to begin... Ah.
Gwynne: Um... I know this is selfish, but there's one stall I really want to stop by.
Vyrn: Oh yeah, your dad said your favorite stall was here, didn't he?
Gwynne: Er... Yeah, that's the one. It's a little embarrassing, though.
Lyria: Hehe. We should start with your favorite place, Gwynne!
Vyrn: Then we're hitting the candy apple stall right after!
Gwynne: Um... Thanks, you two. Is that all right with you too, (Captain)?
(Captain) agrees, and Gwynne gently takes the captain by the hand.
Gwynne: Okay, let's go. Follow me.
Vyrn: This is... just a regular chicken skewer stall?
Gwynne: Hehe, it looks that way, doesn't it?. It's delicious, of course, and it also has a festive feature that I like.
Lyria: A festive feature?
As (Captain) and the others stand with puzzled looks, the stall owner notices something and calls out to them.
Stall Owner: Well, well, well! If it isn't little Gwynne!
Gwynne: Hey! Hehe, long time no see. I'm glad to see you're doing well.
Stall Owner: I sure am! Still going strong!
Stall Owner: Still, it really has been a while. Feels like you haven't been back in forever. Have you gotten a bit bigger while you were gone?
Gwynne: Maybe a little. I haven't been back for the festival in ages.
Stall Owner: So true, so true. But you haven't forgotten the rule, have you?
Stall Owner: Whether you get the "special bonus" is up to chance!
Gwynne: Oh, I haven't forgotten. I'll take one to start.
The stall owner flashes a grin and takes out a box filled with sticks.
Vyrn: Hm? What's that?
Stall Owner: My little claim to fame! Every stick in this box has a number on the end.
Stall Owner: Numbers go from one to five. Whatever number you draw is how many skewers you get! No do-overs!
Lyria: Oh wow! You could get five of them?
Stall Owner: Hahaha! If fortune's on your side, anyway!
Gwynne: I'll handle this. I'll make sure we get enough for everyone!
Gwynne reaches eagerly into the box and draws a stick.
Gwynne: This is the one!
The stick reads "1," and Gwynne deflates the moment she sees it.
Stall Owner: Aw, tough luck! Just one skewer for you!
Gwynne: Aww... Come on, give me one more!
Stall Owner: Ha! That's fine by me, but maybe your friends would like to try their luck too?
Gwynne: Oh... Sorry. I got a little carried away there...
Lyria: It's all right, really!
Vyrn: Come on, (Captain), let's avenge that weak draw!
At Vyrn's urging, (Captain) reaches in and draws a stick. The result—
Stall Owner: There ya go!
Stall Owner: Big winner! First "5" we've had all day!
Gwynne: No way! I've never even drawn a five before!
Vyrn: That's incredible! Knew ya had it in ya, (Captain)!
Choose: I just got lucky.
Gwynne: Oof... That sounds like something only a true pro could say!
Choose: Luck is a skill too.
Gwynne: That's such a smug face! Ugh... But it's hard to argue when you have the talent to back it up!
Continue 1(Captain) holds out a chicken skewer to Gwynne, who accepts it with visible frustration.
Gwynne: Man... I wanted to show off so badly...
Just then, a voice suddenly calls out to (Captain) and the others from the crowd.
???: Is that... Gwynne?
After Destiny: Scene 2
The voice belongs to one of Gwynne's hometown friends. As they happily reminisce, her old friends talk about how amazing she is for living as a skyfarer. Realizing combat is a completely foreign concept to those living in peace, Gwynne is reminded that her path vastly differs from that of these people she once knew.
Local Girl: It is you! Gwynne, over here!
Gwynne: Cynthia? Is that you?
Gwynne turns toward the voice, and her expression instantly brightens.
Gwynne: Cynthia! It's been so long!
Local Girl: It really has! I didn't expect to see you here!
Local Boy: Hey, Cynthia. What are you... Wait, Gwynne? When did you get back!
Gwynne: Loel? Wow, it is you! Hehe, I almost didn't recognize you.
It does not take long to tell that Gwynne and the two locals know each other well.
As Gwynne chats with the two of them, she wears a relaxed expression she rarely shows aboard the Grandcypher.
Local Girl: Seriously, it's been ages! Oh, and who's this? A friend of yours?
Choose: Nice to meet you.
Gwynne: Well, this is the captain of the skyfarer crew I'm traveling with these days...
Choose: Are you friends of my Gwynne?
Local Boy: M-my Gwynne?
Local Girl: Y-You mean, you two are married?
Gwynne: No, no, no! (Captain), stop teasing my friends!
Gwynne: We're not married, this is the captain of the skyfarer crew I'm traveling with these days!
Continue 1Local Boy: A skyfarer crew? Then... does that mean you're a skyfarer too, Gwynne?
Local Girl: No way! You're a skyfarer now, Gwynne?
Gwynne: Uh.
Gwynne: Uh, well. That's not exactly... I mean... Hmm.
Still sounding uncertain, Gwynne lightly tugs at (Captain)'s sleeve.
Gwynne: (Captain), can I talk to you for a second?
Gwynne: Um... I'm sorry to ask, but could you go along with it and say I'm a skyfarer too?
Gwynne: I can't exactly tell them about the Society... And honestly, I wouldn't know how to explain it anyway.
Even after everything that has happened, and despite now traveling with the skyfaring crew, Gwynne still belongs to the Society.
(Captain) understands that Gwynne's battles and everything that came after are not easy to explain.
That is why, when Gwynne asks, (Captain) answers with a quiet nod.
Gwynne: Thank you. I appreciate it.
Local Boy: Man, when I heard you'd left the island, I kept wondering what happened to you... Never thought you'd end up a skyfarer.
Local Girl: Same. But honestly, that actually makes a lot of sense.
Gwynne: Y-You think so?
Local Girl: Totally! You always had this... I don't know, bold side to you!
Local Boy: Oh yeah, for sure. You were always out there with us boys, climbing trees and playing sword fights and everything.
Lyria: You were, Gwynne? Really?
Gwynne: W-Well... I don't think that's a big deal or anything.
Vyrn: Hmm... Yeah, I can kinda picture that.
Local Girl: That's why it was such a surprise to see you wearing a yukata.
Local Girl: You look really pretty!
Gwynne: Oh, uh... Thanks, I guess.
Local Girl: Aw, don't be shy about it!
Local Girl: Seriously, though... Back then, you were so energetic, always on the move... And you had this real strong sense of justice too—
Local Boy: "Strong sense of justice" might be giving her too much credit. She was just stubborn.
Gwynne: H-Hey, I wasn't that stubborn!
Local Boy: Nah, you definitely were. And you hated losing more than anybody!
Local Girl: Haha, yep, that's her all right. You remember, don't you? That time we all came to the festival together.
Gwynne: H-hey, Cynthia!
Local Girl: Have you all been to the chicken skewer stall where you draw a number to see how many skewers you get?
Lyria: That's the stall we all went to earlier, right?
Vyrn: Yeah, we went. Gwynne here drew a "1."
Local Girl: Ahaha! Gwynne, you still never get lucky with stuff like that, huh?
Lyria: "Still?"
Local Girl: Oh, yeah. She struck out at that same stall when we were kids, and she cried her little eyes out!
Local Boy: Yup. And when I drew a bigger number than her, it put her in an even worse mood.
Vyrn: Wow... You seriously haven't changed one bit.
Gwynne: That's not what happened! Loel kept making fun of me!
Lyria: Hehe, I'm sort of happy that we get to hear about this side of you, Gwynne!
Vyrn: True. It ain't often we get to hear about your old days.
Gwynne: Maybe, but I wish they hadn't told you that story...
Gwynne: Okay, enough! Let's talk about the present, please!
Gwynne: Cynthia, Loel, what have you been up to?
Local Girl: Me? Nothing special, really.
Local Boy: I'm working under the blacksmith now. Still learning the ropes, though.
Local Girl: I'm helping out at my mom's shop. She's even started selling some of the clothes I make!
Gwynne: You make your own clothes? Amazing...
Local Boy: What are you talking about? You're the most amazing one here!
Gwynne: Me? I'm not really...
Local Girl: No no, being a skyfarer is amazing! I mean, you guys fight monsters and stuff, right?
Vyrn: Sure do. Monster hunting's a pretty common job for us.
Local Girl: Wow! Being a skyfarer really is something...
Local Boy: So fighting beasts that scary is basically everyday work for you guys? That's wild.
Gwynne: (If only monsters were the worst of it...)
Gwynne: (Still, telling them "I fought an automagod on the moon" would probably just confuse them.)
Local Girl: Loel, you were so scared the other day when that monster showed up nearby, remember?
Local Boy: Well, yeah! They said a whole bunch of people had gotten hurt!
Local Boy: If I'm being honest, if I came face-to-face with a monster, I'd be too scared to do anything but run.
Local Girl: Yeah, same here, probably.
Local Girl: That's what makes you so incredible, Gwynne!
As her friends go on and on, Gwynne says nothing.
Gwynne: (Oh, I see.)
Gwynne: (To them, fighting monsters— no...)
Gwynne: (Fighting itself is out of the ordinary.)
After everything her fate has brought her through, Gwynne is reminded that the world she now belongs to is anything but ordinary.
Gwynne: (It's out of the ordinary, terrifying... and nowhere close to "normal.")
Gwynne: Of course. That's how it is for most people.
Gwynne murmurs under her breath, keeping that sense of dissonance to herself.
She only watches in silence, gazing at the friends she once spent her days with on this island.
After Destiny: Scene 3
The "main event" Gwynne mentioned is a moon-viewing party. While the others buy manju, the captain checks on Gwynne as she stays behind. Aware of the differences between herself and her friends, she wryly admits she probably couldn't have lived a normal life here awaiting her brother. (Captain), similarly unable to imagine a life without journeying, shares a relieved smile with her.
After parting ways with Gwynne's friends, (Captain) and the crew follow her to another part of the festival.
Night has fully settled over the road, and most of the stalls that lined it now sit with their lights dimmed.
Lyria: Hm? Are the stalls shutting down already?
Vyrn: But you said nighttime was when the main event starts, didn't ya?
Gwynne: They have to do this first to prepare. It's almost time.
Gwynne guides (Captain) and the crew along a forest trail, and as the path opens into a clearing—
Lyria: Wow, look at how big the moon is!
Vyrn: Wait, is this the main event you were talking about, Gwynne?
Gwynne: Yes. This island used to be a little famous for how clearly you could see the moon.
Gwynne: So the tradition is to hold the festival around the full moon this time of year.
Gwynne: To close out the festival, everyone dims the lights as much as possible and looks up at the moon together.
Gwynne: That's the main custom at our festival.
True to Gwynne's words, the area is lit by little more than the moon.
The moon's light alone is bright enough to bathe the upturned faces of the crowd in its glow.
Their faces are filled with joy, and (Captain) and the others join them in gazing up at the beautiful moon.
Gwynne: Maybe this is why those people made their home here.
Lyria: Gwynne?
Gwynne: Oh, um, nothing! Don't mind me.
Gwynne: Oh, and one more thing. There's more to it than just watching the moon. See that over there?
Gwynne points towards a single stall that remains lit, standing quietly on its own.
Vyrn: Oh, is that stall still open?
Gwynne: Actually, that stall only opens after dark.
Gwynne: They sell moon-shaped manju, made to look like the full moon. They're one of the festival's specialties.
Lyria: Moon-shaped manju! I'd love to have one!
Gwynne: Hehe. I'll save us a spot, so why don't you all go buy some?
Vyrn: Are ya sure? This is your first festival in forever too, isn't it?
Gwynne: It's all right. I'll take care of the spot and make sure it's a good one.
Lyria: If you're sure... Then we'll get one for you too, Gwynne!
Vyrn: All right! Come on, (Captain)!
Lyria and Vyrn start toward the stall, but (Captain) stops midway.
The moon slips behind the clouds, leaving the open field in shadow. Gwynne gives (Captain) a puzzled look.
Gwynne: (Captain)? You're not going with them?
Choose: Is everything all right?
Gwynne: Huh?
Gwynne: Sorry. I guess I worried you a little.
Gwynne: That wasn't my intention... Haha, I guess it's hard to keep anything from you.
With a faint, tired smile, Gwynne steps ahead of (Captain) and quietly begins to speak.
Gwynne: You know how I was talking to my old friends before?
Gwynne: For most people, fighting at all is something out of the ordinary. It's not something they live with every day.
Gwynne: I think that made me realize that fighting has become such a normal part of my life.
Gwynne: I spent so much time with them back when we were young, but now I feel like we've followed such different paths...
(Captain) thinks back to the conversation with Gwynne's friends.
Gwynne had simply been standing there, quietly looking on as they reminisced.
Gwynne: I mean, I knew the choice I made wasn't exactly normal. And I knew it came with risks.
Gwynne: As soon as I joined the Society, Drill Sergeant Ilsa taught me that without resolve, you won't survive.
Gwynne: So I'm not sad about it, exactly. It just really hit me that my path through life is nothing like theirs.
Gwynne: And honestly, I don't even know what I would be doing if I hadn't joined the Society.
Gwynne: Maybe helping Mom and Dad run the diner, the way Cynthia helps with her family's shop?
Gwynne: Hehe, and maybe I'd have waited on you if you visited and stopped in for a meal.
Gwynne: Then I wouldn't call you Captain. Maybe "customer?" Yeah, I suppose so.
Gwynne: Oh, and then maybe instead of captain and crewmate, we'd be friends, the way Loel and I are.
Gwynne brings her face near (Captain)'s, and for a moment they lock eyes.
Gwynne: Maybe we'd even... Hehe, kidding!
Gwynne: Pfft... Ahaha! You should see your face!
Gwynne: It was just a joke. You don't have to look that shocked.
Gwynne nudges (Captain) gently, then backs away with a quiet, amused laugh.
Gwynne: But yeah, I admit it felt kind of strange. It's not that I mind being closer or anything like that.
Gwynne: I don't really know how to put it, but I can't imagine you being anything other than my captain.
Gwynne's eyes drift away from (Captain) and up toward the sky.
Gwynne: But helping out at the diner is something I can picture. I did it a lot growing up.
Gwynne: And all that time, I would have been waiting for my brother to come home, even though I didn't know his face.
Gwynne: Just waiting...
Gwynne: Yeah, no. On second thought, I couldn't have done that. I'm too impatient.
Gwynne: I think I would have set out to find him myself.
As she speaks, Gwynne's eyes lift to the sky and settle straight on the moon.
Gwynne: Waiting around would be impossible. Once it got on my mind, I'd have to do something.
Gwynne: Something about doing nothing just feels like admitting defeat, or giving up.
Gwynne: Haha, I guess Loel was right. Maybe I really am stubborn and competitive.
Gwynne gives (Captain) a wry smile, as though she's realized her true nature for the first time.
But (Captain) is no stranger to setting out in pursuit of a wish.
Choose: I can't imagine not being a skyfarer.
Gwynne: You feel that way too?
Gwynne: Of course you're the same way, (Captain).
Gwynne: You set out from your island because you wanted to make your wishes happen with your own two hands.
Gwynne: Hehe. I don't know why, but it makes me feel better knowing you're the same as me, (Captain).
Just then, moonlight creeps out from behind the clouds.
The moon emerges and illuminates Gwynne's gently smiling face.
For a moment, (Captain) can only stare, breath taken by her beauty.
Gwynne: (Captain)? Is something wrong?
Choose: It was a nice festival.
Gwynne: I think so too. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Choose: I was just admiring you.
Gwynne: Haha, where did that come from? What a weird one.
Continue 1Gwynne lets out a youthful laugh, and (Captain) laughs too.
Right on cue, Vyrn and Lyria make their way back.
Vyrn: There ya are, (Captain)! We were looking for you!
Lyria: We bought enough manju for everyone!
Gwynne: Oh, they're back. Hehe, let's join them.
Gwynne: Thank you, (Captain).
Gwynne takes (Captain) by the hand and hurries toward Lyria and Vyrn.
And so, the night spent beneath the moon becomes one of (Captain) and the crew's treasured summer memories.
