Happy Birthday Cutscenes
# Link Text
1 ✔

Happy birthday. If my company could bring even a little splash of good to your day, then I'd be drowning in delight.
I'm not sure that came out right... Anyway, have a happy birthday.

2 ✔

Happy birthday to you, (Captain). Since we're together every day, it's hard to see how you've changed.
But I know that both you and I will change as each year passes, (Captain).
Even so, my trust in you will never change.
So I'll keep trying my hardest so that your trust in me will never change either.
Ah, I'm sorry. I'm not sure if I said that very well...
But, anyway, let's make this next year a good one.

3 ✔

Today's your birthday, huh, (Captain)? Happy birthday to you.
I wasn't always able to swim like I do now, you know. When I was a kid, I got tired easily and couldn't swim long distances.
But all the grown-ups told me that if I keep at it, then I'd be able to do it... I believed them and practiced until I finally achieved it.
Sorry... Why am I talking about this anyway...
Oh... I mean, you have a dream too, don't you?
You've been steadily working at it, believing that it'll come true and you'll make it one day. You're growing closer to it step by step.
I can't put it into words very well... But do you get what I'm trying to say?
Good... I'm glad to hear it.
(Captain), your dreams will surely come true someday. I know because I believe in them too.

4 ✔

I'm so happy I get to celebrate your birthday this year too.
While I'm at it... I wanna thank you for another great year of adventuring.
Was it weird to say that out of the blue? It's just hard to find the right time, you know? But I wanted to express my gratitude.
People used to laugh at my dream of swimming in the ocean at the bottom of the skies...
But not you, (Captain). You took my dream seriously.
Not only that. You're trying to get to the end of the skies...
And when I see you striving toward that goal, it gives me strength. It's like you're telling me it's okay not to abandon my dream either.
Sorry. I meant to thank you and instead I'm just going on about my own stuff. But, um...
I'll be with you all the way to the end of the sky. I want to be there for you just the way you've been there for me.
And I'd love it if we could travel together to the bottom of the skies... That is, if you want to.
No matter how many years it takes, (Captain), let's make our dreams come true.

5 ✔

Happy birthday, (Captain). We went to a lot of different places this year too, didn't we? It was so much fun.
What do you mean it's a detour? 'Cause we still haven't reached the bottom of the sky? No way.
Having you here, spending your time with me and having fun without laughing at my dream...
And seeing you chase your dream as well... All of this is very precious to me.
One day, when the both of us reach our destinations, we might have to say goodbye and go on our individual journeys.
If that happens, let's promise to journey together again someday, even if we're all old and wrinkly by then.
Huh? That's fast-forwarding too much?
Yeah. Haha, you're right.
We don't know what'll happen tomorrow... but I hope I can wish you happy birthday again someday.

Happy New Year Cutscenes

1 ✔

Happy New Year! Be sure not to waste this important holiday.
The weather might be chilly, but don't stay cooped up inside. Try and take a walk. It'll warm you up!

2 ✔

If you relax all through the holiday, you might feel sluggish once it's over.
That's why you should try moving around a little. Even food tastes better after some exercise!
Come on! Let's take a little stroll outside! It'll warm you up.
Why don't you wear something light in case you break a sweat? Like a cardigan or something.
And don't forget, you could catch a cold if you don't stay active.
All right! Shall we head out then for a walk?

3 ✔

Huff, huff, huff, huff...
Happy New Year, (Captain)... Me? Well, the morning air felt so fresh, so I went and had a jog.
The weather's great today... You should try some exercise too.
By the way, I saw a crowd of people headed up the thousand-stair path near the mountain while I was out.
They say that if you climb all one thousand steps and make a wish at the top, then it'll come true.
You wanna check it out? Yeah, I figured you'd say that when I told you.
But climbing a thousand steps can be hard on your body, so let's take our time and not rush.
Go get changed and wait for me back here. I'll go make some hot tea to bring along to keep ourselves warm.

4 ✔

Happy New Year. This is a great opportunity for us to make sure we're all in good health.
To that end proper diet and exercise are key.
So I'm gonna go out for a run. There's nothing better than setting and maintaining good habits from the start of a new year.
Hm, you thought I'd say that? You're ready to go running too because you saw my annual invite from a mile away?
Good, both of us are prepped then. Let's get going.
Since we're doing this, we might as well follow up with some intense bodyweight exercises after the run.
To another year of fantastic health, (Captain)!

5 ✔

(Captain)... (Captain)! Come on, wake up. You planning on sleeping all day?
Let's go running. If you wanna stay fit all year, you have to start working for it from the get-go.
What? It's boring if all we're doing is running? Well, I guess...
Then... How about this? Let's wake everyone else up and run as a big group.
I mean, people feel connected when they're all doing the same thing, right? So it'd be like setting a resolution to stay traveling buddies.
Sounds like fun? All right! Then get up! I'll go gather the crew while you're changing. See you in a bit.
Oh wait. Almost forgot. Happy New Years, (Captain).
Also... Don't go back to sleep.

1 ✔

Happy Valentine's!
Hm? Sweets? I don't hate them. After all, sugar's important to a balanced diet.
You're giving me chocolate? Really? Thank you! I'll be sure to eat every last bite.

2 ✔

Hm?
Is this... chocolate?
...!
Thank you.
No, I don't mind sweet chocolate. I'm very grateful!
Let's see, in exchange...
Oh? Not now?
Okay, but I promise I'll give you something in return. I want to... So just be patient!
Pinky promise. Cross my heart and hope to... Well, I'm not breaking it so that's enough!

3 ✔

You're giving me chocolate again this year? Thank you. I'm glad!
Chocolate is supposed to be good for your health. It helps prevent illness and recover from exhaustion.
But to get those effects, you shouldn't eat a lot at once. I heard you should have it in small portions.
So... I'll divide this up so I can eat some later.
Thank-you gifts are given next month, huh? Is there anything you want? Maybe something good for your body?
Okay, then leave it to me. I'll be sure to find something good for you!

4 ✔

Everything okay, (Captain)? What did you call me out here for?
A gift for me? Ah, right. Today's Valentine's. Thank you.
They look delicious. No, more like they're bound to be delicious. I know from tasting these every year.
Uh-oh, I'm feeling a sugar craving coming on. This puts me in the danger zone—wouldn't wanna finish these all in one go.
Too much chocolate leads to a nosebleed. Didn't you know that?
You'll watch to make sure I don't eat too much at once?
Thanks, that'll definitely help.
But why don't we eat together then? That way, if we end up overindulging, we can just exercise it off together.
From enjoying treats to exercise, it's always more fun done with someone else.
But you, (Captain), you'd be a wonderful partner for any activity.

5 ✔

What? (Captain)? Yeah, I'm done with my sprints for today. Did something happen?
Oh. For me? Hey, were you waiting this entire time just to give this to me?
!
Thank you, (Captain). I'm really... really happy.
So you were waiting for me to come home, huh? I dunno why, but that kinda puts me on cloud nine.
Oh... Uhh, sorry. I'm kinda sweaty, huh? Lemme take a shower real quick. Give me just a sec.
Then I wanna thank you again. That sound cool? Great. Thanks!

1 ✔

Happy White Day! Do you like sweet treats?
I see... Then this is for you. Sugar is good for you in moderation, you know.
You're worried about putting on weight? Don't be silly. Just get some exercise! How about going for a run right now?

2 ✔

Oh, (Captain)! Wait!
Whoa!
Sorry! And thanks...
So I got you a gift for White Day, you see...
But I don't know which one you'd like. Could you just pick your favorite from these?
Hm? Sure, you could pick them all if you want. But if you eat all this, then you'd better exercise too.
Huh? What'll happen to the one you don't choose? I was going to eat it myself. What about it?
Got it. Then let's split it all. And after you've eaten it, let's go for a workout together, (Captain)!

3 ✔

Today is White Day, right? I have a thank-you gift for Valentine's day. Go on and take it.
You said you wanted something good for your body, so I tried looking for organic snack foods. Do you want to try these? Okay, go ahead!
Oh yeah? It tastes good? There were lots of flavors, so I tried them all and picked this one. I guess it was worth the trouble!
I bought a lot, but don't eat them all at once. You shouldn't have too much sugar.
I guess today's fun is over now...
Hm? It's so good that you can't stop eating them? I see... Well, I'm happy you like them at least!
Okay, I understand. Then if you overeat, we'll just do some exercise. So eat all you like!

4 ✔

(Captain), thanks for coming out here. Sorry for the short notice.
I get kind of bashful around others. I mean, it is White Day after all...
This here's to show my appreciation for your Valentine's goodies.
I was wondering if you'd like to feast on these together, like we did last month.
Yeah, I bought some for myself too. Actually, it's more like I couldn't decide what to buy, so I ended up buying a little of everything.
I figured the two of us could finish it all though. If you're up for it, that is.
You are? Good, I'll get some tea ready.
Just so you know, I didn't buy this all on purpose. But if it means I get to enjoy tea with you, then I'm glad I did.

5 ✔

Umm... Hey, (Captain). You got a second?
Here, this is for you. But, you know, I don't like the entire idea of White Day's presents being some kind of thank-you gift. Like you're forced to give them or something.
Well, it implies that I can't like anyone unless they say they like me first. Uhh... It takes away my free will, in a way.
Sorry. I'm not making any sense. Anyways, what I wanted to say is... Well, I like you, (Captain).
I bought you this present because I like you. Yeah, it's a thank-you gift, but that's not all it is. I just wanted you to know that.
Thank you. It really means a lot to me—you accepting my present and listening to me like this.
I guess communication really is important. So, you know what? I'll tell you as many times as it takes. I really like you, (Captain).
And I want you to like me back. So I will never ever give up on you.

1 ✔

Happy Halloween! Wear a costume? Me?
Well, I guess I could go as a fish. Is that no good?
All right, how about a crab? Or is a shellfish better?

2 ✔

Tricks... tricks... Hmm...
Maybe I could try dissolving some fun colors into the pool for the water polo game today.
Cleanup's gonna be a pain, though.
What do you think, (Captain)? Maybe I don't need to bother with tricks at all?
Hm. But it's Halloween. Everyone's going to get really excited when they see it, don't you think?
They'll be perfectly happy just getting candy? You're probably right. Candy it is!

3 ✔

I went shopping for candy to pass out, but I was surprised at all the crazy colors it comes in.
So I tried looking into it to see if there are any dangerous ingredients, but they're mostly plants and beetle powder...
But just because it's plants and bugs doesn't meant it's safe. There are plenty of poisonous ones out there, you know!
As it turns out, the shop I went to uses safe ingredients in their time-tested recipe before adding coloring to their candies. So they're safe to give out.
I'm a worrywart? No way... I just don't want to make a mistake and give the kids something they shouldn't have...
But all this talk is keeping us from the party. This candy can't pass out itself! Let's go, (Captain).

4 ✔

Um, (Captain)? There's something I want to talk to you about.
I can't think what I should do for Halloween.
I just can't bring myself to play a trick on anyone. What if I really upset them?
Maybe it would be better if I let someone else prank me. (Captain), do you want to try?
It's hard to prank someone who's expecting it? Yeah, I guess you're right.
Yeesh... Halloween is tough.
Ah.
Can I just tag along with you today, (Captain)?
I'd like to be your Halloween apprentice. Learn the trick-or-treats of the trade.
I'll make sure not to get underfoot... What do you say?
Really? I can? Thank you!
Let's head into town then. I'm counting on you to teach me your spooky ways.

5 ✔

T-trick or treat...
Huh? I'm being too hesitant? Hmm... I guess I am...
You see, I was thinking that since it's Halloween, I should think of a trick to play on people...
But I got worried thinking about how the trick might scare them too much... It's hard. Hmm, I wonder what kind of trick would be good...
Oh, how about something like this?
I can dress up as a ghost that hands out candy. Then people might be a little surprised, but also happy that they get treats.
How does that sound?
Yeah? All right! Then I'll go get the candy and costume ready!
You can be the first person that gets candy from me. I'll be right back!

Happy Holidays Cutscenes

1 ✔

Happy holidays.
I bet even Santa Claus can't make it to the ends of the sky.
Or can he?
It would be so awesome if he could!

2 ✔

Do you think Santa's sleigh could reach the bottom of the sky?
If I pleaded with him enough, I wonder if he'd take me there...
Then again, maybe he's too busy.
I should've asked when I was a kid. Instead of a present, I should've asked for a sleigh ride.
Ah... But maybe it's for the best.
If I'd asked, I might never have met you and the crew, (Captain). Yeah, I'm glad I met you instead!

3 ✔

Mm... It really is pretty...
Hm? (Captain)... Are you curious about this book of paintings?
I got it when I was a little kid. Do you wanna take a look?
Supposedly this painting is by an artist who was fascinated with the bottom of the sky, so she drew what she imagined it'd be like.
I bet she was a lot like me... Probably read fairy tales and thought a lot about a huge sea far beneath the clouds...
I wanted to meet her one day and ask her all sorts of things... But I heard she passed away a long time ago.
Looking at this picture, I wonder if Santa Claus will get to see a sight like this tonight! If he does, he sure is lucky...

4 ✔

What a quiet night it is... Then again, tonight is that special night.
Oh, of course. Because I brought you away from the party.
Hm, sorry about that. I just wanted to talk to you alone.
Especially after seeing how pretty it was outside from the window.
Hm, what I wanted to talk about? Well, I didn't exactly have something in mind.
But I was thinking that even at the bottom of the skies, they might be celebrating the festivities the same way we are... How strange that'd be...
Is it as quiet down there as it is here now, or is it always quiet in the Crimson Horizon?
The bottom of the skies is all I talk about? Well, it's always something I dreamed of as a kid.
I'd like to go there with you someday if you're up for it.
I don't know how many winter holidays will come before then, but I'm sure the time will come eventually...

5 ✔

I wonder if snow falls at the bottom of the sky... What do you think, (Captain)?
Be nice if it did? Yeah. You're right. I think so too.
Heh-heh. You always know what to say. Makes me kinda happy.
But, man... I feel like, every winter, all I do is talk to you about the world under the clouds.
Yeah... You have a point. I guess it's just because the thing I want most is to reach the bottom of the sky.
Guess I'm still dreaming, just like a kid. I really haven't changed at all.
And thanks for never telling me I had to change... (Captain).
One day, let's travel to the bottom of the sky and swim in that huge ocean together... I'd like that a lot.

Summer's End by the Sea

Joel takes (Captain) swimming at a cove said to be connected to another world. Perhaps due to summer fatigue, the captain sees a vision underwater of being left behind by Vyrn and Lyria, but Joel offers reassurance that the other world he mentioned is merely a legend.

Even though the height of summer has come and gone, a scorching heatwave continues to grip Auguste.
However, this enduring swelter signals not the end of the season's harshest weather, but rather its beginning.
Joel: Phew, this sunlight is intense. Feels like my skin is on fire.
Having just completed a request to hunt sea monsters, (Captain) and Joel walk along the beach, sweating profusely.
Joel: Pass that bag over here too, (Captain). I'll carry it.
Taking the heavy leather satchel of rare minerals they received as a reward, Joel heaves it over his shoulder.
Joel: Don't worry, this is nothing. I'm used to the sun beating down by the sea.
Joel: Besides, I'm feeling great thanks to this comfy swimsuit. Apparently it was made using the latest cutting-edge techniques.
Joel: But having Vyrn and Lyria stay behind was the right call. This heat would have wiped them out, especially with how muggy it is today.
Suddenly looking slightly nervous, he adjusts the load on his back.
Joel: Hey, (Captain). How about the two of us go for a swim after this?
Joel: I know a secret spot that doesn't get many visitors.
Joel: So why don't we go together? I think you'll like it—or at least, I hope you will.
  1. Anything to get me out of this heat!

Choose: Anything to get me out of this heat!
Joel: Great. Then let's head out as soon as we drop off our things.
Joel leads the way to a cool, quiet cove tucked away from the crowds.
Joel: Make sure to do some warm-ups beforehand. The water here is pretty cold.
The two prepare by carefully stretching each and every muscle.
Joel: All right, that should do it.
Joel: Come on in, (Captain). The water's cool and refreshing.
Joel: So what do you think?
  1. It's delightfully chilly!

Choose: It's delightfully chilly!
Joel: I'm glad you're a fan. I've always wanted to bring you here.
Joel: You see... this place has a strong connection to my dream.
Joel: There's a legend that says the seafloor here leads to a whole other world.
Joel: When I heard that as a kid, I thought maybe that "other world" was the bottom of the sky.
Joel: All my life, I've dreamed of swimming in the huge ocean beneath the clouds.
Joel: So I kept coming back here to dive again and again, hoping something would connect.
Joel: But no matter how many times I went down, I never found what I was looking for.
Joel: Then I met you, (Captain). And I realized if I just kept doing things the same way, nothing would ever change.
Joel: Anyway, sorry—let's swim. Not much point to my nostalgic rambling, since this place doesn't actually lead anywhere.
Joel: But... you really can see a whole other world.
Joel takes (Captain)'s hand, and together they venture a little farther out.
Joel: Dive in after me. I want to show you somewhere even more peaceful and beautiful.
The captain nods and follows Joel underwater.
Beneath the waves, (Captain) is greeted by a scene of crystal clear waters and magnificent coral reefs.
Joel: ...
In that moment, the captain understands that this breathtaking seascape is the "other world" Joel had wanted to share.
There on the ocean floor, utterly still and isolated from the world above, the only movement is the gentle sway of seaweed.
In that underwater realm, (Captain) catches sight of a girl gliding nearby, her hair streaming behind her.
  1. (Lyria?)

Choose: (Lyria?)
Knowing that Lyria should be safe back on the ship, (Captain) swims after her in confusion.
Joel: ((Captain)?)
Suddenly, Vyrn appears at Lyria's side, and the pair drift past just beyond the captain's reach.
Their figures move farther away, as if to leave (Captain) behind.
  1. (Wait!)

Choose: (Wait!)
Joel: ...!
With a look of concern on his face, Joel grabs the captain's outstretched hand.
Joel: (Easy, (Captain). Come on, we're heading to the surface.)
Joel: Pwah! I'll have you back on dry land right away. Just relax and let me handle this.
Joel scoops up (Captain) and swims for the shore, making it there in no time flat.
Joel: Breathing is uneven... but there's no water in the lungs.
Joel: Pulse is a little slow. Need to keep the body warm.
Joel: (Captain), can you hear me?
The captain nods and attempts to sit up.
Joel: No, just lie still for now. Don't worry, you should feel better soon.
Joel: You were acting a little strange down there, so I brought you up to be safe.
Joel: But you didn't take in any water, and you're clearly alert. Everything looks okay. Just relax.
Joel: Here, let me cover you with this towel. I want to get you warmed up, if only a little.
(Captain) tells Joel about seeing Vyrn and Lyria at the bottom of the sea.
Joel: Is that even possible? Vyrn and Lyria are supposed to be waiting for us on the ship.
Joel: And I'm pretty sure it's just the two of us here. If anyone else were diving, we would have seen them come up for air at least once.
Thinking back on the memory of Vyrn and Lyria being just out of reach, the captain's expression grows forlorn.
  1. They left me...

Choose: They left me...
Joel: ((Captain) looks so sad...)
Joel: Sorry. I should have noticed sooner that something was wrong.
Joel: Maybe you started hallucinating from lack of oxygen during the dive.
Joel: You've been pushing yourself every day in this heat, after all. The exhaustion might have finally caught up to you.
Joel: (The body and mind are connected. Physical fatigue affects the psyche as well.)
Joel: ((Captain) is mentally drained right now. Or at least, that's the expression I'm seeing.)
Joel: (Although, I'd expect someone who just had such a vivid hallucination to be a lot more out of it...)
Joel: (Could it be that (Captain) really caught a glimpse of another world?)
Joel: ((Captain) has made it through plenty of events straight out of legends before.)
Joel: (Maybe (Captain) can see things that are just beyond me.)
Joel: (But if that's the case, what exactly was that other world with Vyrn and Lyria in it?)
Joel: (They should be back on the airship. We even talked to them right before we left.)
Joel: (So maybe what (Captain) saw wasn't real, but it was something with a deeper meaning—like a vision?)
Noticing the worry etched on Joel's face, (Captain)'s expression grows even gloomier.
Joel: ...!
S-sorry, I got in my head.
Joel: If I had to guess, the vision you saw was probably caused by fatigue. That "other world" I mentioned is nothing but a legend.
Joel: I should have let you rest instead of dragging you out here to swim. You must have been really worn out to hallucinate like that.
Joel: Come on, let's go back to the airship and relax. I'll carry you on my back, so just take it easy.
Joel tries his best to ease (Captain)'s worries, however small the relief might be.
But his words of encouragement only serve to prick at his own heart—a heart that has long believed in a legend of the bottom of the sky.

Kindled Flames to Cool Dusk

Joel feels guilty for dismissing (Captain)'s vision as fantasy, given that the captain has never mocked him for chasing a dream based on such stories. Following a late-night talk by the ocean, Joel starts the next day by taking on the role of (Captain)'s personal trainer.

Earlier that day, (Captain) had seen a vision of Vyrn and Lyria at the bottom of a cove.
Now, as night falls, a young man walks along the beach wearing a troubled expression.
Joel: I wonder if (Captain)'s managed to sleep at all.
Following a visit to the doctor for an examination, Joel had made sure that the captain was comfortably settled into bed.
Joel: (Captain) still seemed pretty upset. I guess a vision like that would weigh on anyone's mind.
Joel: The incessant heat must have really worn (Captain) down, in body and mind alike. Even the doctor diagnosed it as summer fatigue.
Joel: I wish I could have found something better to say at the time. But...
Joel: If I had to guess, the vision you saw was probably caused by fatigue. That "other world" I mentioned is nothing but a legend.
Joel: A legend, huh...
Joel: The ocean at the bottom of the sky is just a legend to other people too.
Joel: Yet here I am, trying to write off what (Captain) saw as mere fantasy.
Joel: Even though (Captain) has never once laughed at my dream.
Joel reproaches himself, not so much for denying his own wish, but more for his treatment of the captain.
Joel: All I ever did was dream idly by the seaside. But you actually boarded an airship and set out for the Island of the Astrals.
Joel: No matter how tough things got, you faced the truth and kept pressing on.
Joel: You've always shone so brightly in my eyes. You gave me courage... which makes my actions all the worse.
Joel: How could I dismiss what you saw and then try to fix everything with empty words of comfort?
Joel clenches his jaw and turns to look out at the sea, only to see a familiar figure.
Joel: (Huh? Is that (Captain)?)
Joel: (All alone, gazing out at the pitch-black waves... (Captain) must still be bothered by what happened earlier.)
Joel: Erm... (Captain)?
  1. Sorry for worrying you.
  2. Took you long enough.

Choose: Sorry for worrying you.
Joel: You don't need to apologize. It's my fault for pushing you to come along when you were already exhausted...
Joel: Actually, never mind. I'm just making excuses.

Choose: Took you long enough.
Joel: Yeah. Sorry for leaving you by yourself.
Continue 1
Joel: Were you able to get some rest?
The captain responds with a tired nod, insisting that there isn't time to stay idle.
Joel: But your face is still pretty pale. You should let other crew members handle the requests and take it easy for a while.
Noticing (Captain)'s cheeks puff out in protest, Joel's expression softens slightly.
Joel: Sulking won't do you any good. Still, I understand how frustrating it is having to rest.
Joel: This reminds me of how I had to take a break once during lifeguard duty because I wasn't feeling well.
Joel: Lifeguards are everyone's safety net, so we can't work if we're not at our best. But knowing that didn't make it any easier.
Joel: I had a clear view of my colleagues from the first aid station. Seeing everything function so well without me was... hard, to say the least.
Joel: In reality, I think everyone had to work more efficiently than usual to cover for me.
Joel: But that didn't stop me from feeling left behind.
Joel: So I know how you feel, (Captain).
Joel: Even so, you need to prioritize taking care of yourself for the time being.
Joel: Your body can't keep up with your drive right now. If you force yourself forward, you'll only end up making things worse.
At Joel's thoughtful words, (Captain) gives a cheerful nod.
Joel: ...
Joel: ((Captain) is smiling. But...)
Joel: (I think it's just to keep me from worrying.)
Joel: (You always put others before yourself like this.)
Joel: (If only I could offer you some real support...)
After this, the two return to the Grandcypher, where they say their good nights and fall asleep in their respective beds.
The following morning, (Captain) gets dressed and steps into the hallway, only to see someone standing there.
Joel: How are you feeling, (Captain)?
Joel: Why don't we do some morning stretches together? It'll help loosen up your muscles and get your blood flowing.
Joel: Oh, there I go skipping the explanation again. You see, last night I was thinking about what I could do for you.
Joel: That's when I realized maybe I could help with managing your health. So I've been waiting for you to wake up.
Joel: A healthy mind comes from a healthy lifestyle, you know. When your body's weak, it's easy for your mood to sink too.
Joel: Obviously, you shouldn't push yourself too hard. But a little exercise before breakfast is good for your digestion.
Joel: Hopefully it'll help you recover. Don't worry, we'll take it slow since it's only the first day.
  1. The first day?

Choose: The first day?
Joel: We need to strengthen your body to handle the heat. For that, regular training is critical.
Joel: Working out for one day would just be a token gesture. There's no meaning in that.
Starting from that day, Joel begins providing health and wellness support to (Captain), almost like a personal trainer.
Joel: Okay, that's enough for now. Nice job with the morning stretches.
Joel: Here, try this—it's a special smoothie packed with green and yellow vegetables. It'll get your digestive system moving before breakfast.
Joel: Good, I'm glad you like it. I made it with some fresh seasonal produce I picked up.
Joel: Great job today, (Captain). Go ahead and lie down if you want. I'll give you a massage.
Joel: It's really important to let your body unwind at the end of the day.
Joel: Easy... does it.
Your back feels a little tense. I'll teach you how to work out these knots yourself tomorrow.
A few days into this routine, Joel spends an evening alone in his room, planning (Captain)'s training regimen.
Joel: That's (Captain) for you. Bounces back quickly and gets the hang of any workout right away.
Joel: Maybe I should up the difficulty a bit tomorrow and add some hills to our walking route.
Joel: Given the added leg strain, I'll switch up the nightly stretches to focus more on calves.
Joel: ((Captain)'s face definitely has more color now. That's a good thing, but...)
Joel: (Is this really what it means to support someone?)
Joel: (Captain) was out there again tonight, staring at the ocean alone.
Joel: (It seems (Captain) is still haunted by that vision of being left behind by Vyrn and Lyria.)
Joel: (Why does it weigh on (Captain) so much when the real Vyrn and Lyria are so close by?)
Joel: (They're right there... And yet... (Captain) is still...)
Joel: It's no use. My thoughts are all jumbled. Guess I should just call it a night.
Joel crawls into bed and forces his eyes shut as he listens to the sound of the gentle breeze outside.

Kindled Flames to Cool Dusk: Scene 2

While helping as a lifeguard, Joel earns his colleagues' respect anew after stopping a boy from swimming outside the safe zone. Joel considers if he should keep looking after (Captain)'s health the same way as always, but when the boy mentions the bottom of the sky, he is prompted to act further.

On yet another scorching day, Joel helps out as a lifeguard at the beach, all the while still worrying about (Captain).
Joel: The wind and waves are calm today. Swimming season must be winding down.
Joel: Huh?
Boy: Woohoooo! Outta the way, mister!
Joel: Whoa there. Where do you think you're going?
Boy: To swim, duh!
Joel: That area's outside the designated zone. Come on, I'll show you the right spot.
Boy: Nah, it's fine! I mean, look at all those rocks! That place has gotta be way more fun!
Joel: No way. You could get injured on the rocks. Or worse, the current could carry you out to sea.
Boy: I'll be okay! I'm super athletic!
Joel: Don't underestimate the waves. Even expert swimmers can get swept away.
Boy: Who do you think you're talking to? I'm the fastest swimmer in all of Auguste, y'know!
Joel: Still not happening. If you go, I'll just bring you back myself.
Boy: Geez, don't be such a spoilsport!
Joel: It's for your own safety. Though I do get the appeal of wanting to swim by all the rocks.
Boy: Then why are you stopping me? Seriously, you sound just like my mom.
Joel: Your mom?
Boy: Uh-huh. She's usually really nice, but sometimes she puts her foot down like this and won't listen to a word I say.
Joel: You mean, when you're doing something dangerous?
Boy: Not even! Like, one time I tried to climb this big tree, and she got all mad at me—kinda like you right now.
Joel: She probably just didn't want you to get hurt.
Boy: Really? From climbing a tree? And anyway, who cares about getting a few scrapes!
Joel: But once something bad happens, it can't be undone. I'm sure your mother is speaking from experience. I know I am.
Joel: That's why I refuse to back down. I won't let you do something you end up regretting.
Boy: Oh yeah?
Joel: Well... I guess that's not the entire picture.
Joel: If all lifeguards cared about was safety, we could just close off the beach entirely.
Joel: But we want everyone to be able to enjoy the sea.
Joel: I hope you can look back and remember how much fun it was to swim here, even after you grow up to be an old man.
Joel: I'd hate for your time here to become a source of painful memories.
Joel: I love the ocean, and I want you to love it too. That's why safety always comes first.
Gazing up at Joel's warm smile, the boy finally appears to be convinced.
Boy: Huh...
Boy: Okay, I'll stay away from the rocks! But just for today!
Joel: It has to be every day. Have all the fun you want, but only in the safe swimming area.
Boy: Rgh... Fine. But you'd better watch, 'cause my special Auguste swim style is super fast! Check it out!
Lifeguard: Joel. Hey, Joel.
Joel: Oh, is it the end of my shift already?
Lifeguard: Well, yes, but that's not what this is about! I just wanted to thank you!
Lifeguard: That kid never listens, no matter how much we warn him. He's always running off somewhere dangerous, forcing us or his parents to drag him back.
Lifeguard: This is the first time I've ever seen him go back to the designated swimming zone on his own!
Joel: Is that right? I'll make sure to keep a close eye on him if he comes again tomorrow.
Lifeguard: Sorry for putting so much on you. I know you're just filling in temporarily...
Joel: I don't mind. Thanks to your efforts, that boy is out there swimming happily as we speak.
Lifeguard: Really?
Joel: Absolutely. Don't worry, I'm used to lifeguard work. As long as I can help keep the beach safe, I'm happy.
Lifeguard: You're seriously a godsend! The whole vibe on the beach feels more focused on the fun whenever you're around.
Joel: You think so? Well, thanks. I'm glad to know I can still make a difference.
Lifeguard: Are you kidding me? Of course you can.
Lifeguard: We've all learned to take better care of ourselves thanks to your suggestions.
Joel: Oh, I do remember putting together some tips on preventing heatstroke and whatnot for beachside staff. That takes me back.
Lifeguard: Yes, we kept all your documents to use for reference. We even share them with our new hires!
Lifeguard: Everyone always says your guides are really thorough and well put-together.
Joel: Is that so...
Joel: (I'll admit, I am pretty confident when it comes to giving health advice and designing wellness routines.)
Joel: (And (Captain) is recovering too, which means the program I made is working.)
Joel watches as the boy swims to and fro in the designated area, sending up splashes of water behind him.
Joel: (All I really want is to keep (Captain) healthy and safe.)
Joel: (Though honestly, it'd be nice if I could provide some emotional support as well...)
Joel: (But maybe the best thing I can do is just keep looking after (Captain)'s health like I've always done—)
Boy: Hey, mister! I just finished swimming all the way from one end to the other!
Joel: I saw. You were really fast.
Boy: Right? I'm the best swimmer in all of Auguste, after all!
Boy: But honestly, Auguste's too small for me now! I wanna swim in that huge ocean at the bottom of the sky!
Joel: ...!
Joel: What... did you say?
Boy: Wait, don't tell me you've never heard of it! Aren't you supposed to be a pro?
Boy: They say there's this giant sea down at the bottom of the sky that never ends, no matter how far you swim!
Boy: After hearing something like that, I can't just not go and see it!
Joel: Yeah. There's no choice but to go.
Joel's expression suddenly grows determined, prompting a curious look from the boy.
Boy: Huh? Something wrong?
Joel: No, I actually need to thank you. I was on the verge of giving up and trudging along like I always have.
Joel: I'll be going now.
Boy: Wait, to where? You don't mean the bottom of the sky, do you?
Joel: Not this time, no. Somewhere much closer.
Joel: My shift is over now, right? I'll let you take over from here.
Lifeguard: Huh? Oh, right...
Leaving the confused pair behind, Joel hurries away from the beach.

Kindled Flames to Cool Dusk: Scene 3

After researching the cove's legends, Joel suggests the visions of Vyrn and Lyria had in fact appeared to guide (Captain). The captain expresses gratitude for the reassurance, but Joel insists it was (Captain)'s determination to reach Estalucia that inspired him to act.

Several days later...
(Captain) and Joel stroll along the beach just after sunrise.
Joel: Judging by your improved pace, it seems you've mostly recovered. Thank goodness.
Joel: I should change up our walking route starting tomorrow. Maybe we could even try jogging.
Turning to face the eagerly nodding captain, Joel's expression turns serious.
Joel: There's something I'd like to talk to you about.
Joel: After finishing my lifeguard shift the other day, I went around town to ask some questions.
Joel: Erm, what I mean to say is, I did a little digging into the legend about the cove where you saw Vyrn and Lyria.
When (Captain) asks why, Joel delves into the details.
Joel: Remember when we were looking out at the Crimson Horizon, and I told you about how the legends of Auguste started?
Joel: I mentioned that the concepts of the sea and motherhood blended together as the stories were passed down, becoming the versions we know today.
Joel: That got me thinking there might be an explanation for the vision you saw too. So I went looking for some local folklore experts.
Joel: Turns out, people have been claiming to have seen the deceased at the bottom of that cove for generations.
Joel: As a result, the cove has come to be known as a place where the dead dwell—in other words, a gateway to another world.
Joel: The unique structure and complex currents keep the water remarkably cold, even during the summer.
Recalling the feel of diving into the chilly water with Joel, (Captain) nods.
Joel: Someone who dives in unaware might struggle to swim and quickly exhaust their oxygen, causing them to see visions of the dead.
Joel: Also, a fisherman friend of mine shared something with me.
Joel: Apparently, there's a common thread among all the apparitions. Each one was precious to the person who saw them.
Joel: So the fisherman had a theory...
Joel: He wondered if maybe our loved ones cross over from the afterlife to warn us that the cove is dangerous.
Joel: Anyway, what I'm getting at is, even if they weren't spirits of the dead...
Joel: Lyria and Vyrn must have come to you that day for your sake.
Eyes closed, (Captain) calls to mind the faces of those two irreplaceable companions.
Joel: Or it could be the other way around.
Joel: Maybe you saw a vision of them because they mean so much to you... or something.
  1. Because they mean so much?

Choose: Because they mean so much?
Joel: I guess it could be argued that you saw exactly what you needed to see most down there on the ocean floor.
Joel: That's why, out of all the important people in your life, it was Vyrn and Lyria who appeared—your closest companions.
Joel: If that's the case, then they weren't leaving you behind. They were showing you the way.
Joel: After all, your wish is to face the future together with all of your friends. Isn't that right?
  1. ...!

Choose: ...!
Joel: When I noticed something was off about you, I grabbed your hand...
Joel: But I'm pretty sure the apparitions of Lyria and Vyrn were actually headed toward the shore.
Joel: So I think your own feelings created those visions to guide you.
  1. Thanks.

Choose: Thanks.
Joel: I'm glad I could offer you some peace of mind. I've been really worried about you, you know.
Joel: I noticed you were going out a lot at night to stare at the sea alone, so I figured you were feeling down.
The captain explains that it was just for a breath of fresh air.
Joel: Sounds like you were burned out enough to need that kind of escape.
Joel: As for your vision, that's just my interpretation. I obviously can't say what's really true, but I hope it gives you a little comfort.
(Captain) smiles, head gently shaking side to side.
  1. What matters is you thought of me.

Choose: What matters is you thought of me.
Joel: ...!
Joel: But...
Joel: I can't take the credit. It's all because of you.
Joel: You were always so determined to reach Estalucia.
Joel: Watching you made me realize it was okay for me to dream too. But just dreaming isn't enough—you have to actually take action.
Joel: The reason I looked into all of this in the first place is because I was inspired by you.
Joel: So thank you, (Captain).
The golden light of the morning sun illuminates Joel's face as he smiles widely.

Kindled Flames to Cool Dusk: Scene 4

Having recovered from summer fatigue thanks to Joel's wellness routine, the captain arrives to meet him after his shift. On the way back to the ship, Joel says he wants to be a place of comfort to (Captain) like the mother sea and continues to provide heartfelt health guidance to the crew.

Joel finishes another day of assisting as a temporary lifeguard.
Around the time the blazing sun is finally starting its descent into the sea, he spots the person he was waiting for.
Joel: Oh! There you are, (Captain).
Joel: Thanks for coming to pick me up. It's good to see you're feeling better.
Having overcome all summer fatigue thanks to Joel's wellness routine, (Captain) arrives to meet him after his shift.
Joel: I just finished up. Another day without any accidents, I'm happy to report.
Joel: Let's head back.
With this, Joel and (Captain) set off together.
As they stroll quietly beneath the orange glow of the evening sun, Joel clears his throat.
Joel: I think I finally figured out my own feelings today.
Joel: I wanted to protect your health and heal your heart, and I worked hard towards those goals.
Joel: But in the end, I just wanted to be there for you—because I care about you.
Joel: That said, you're way stronger than I gave you credit for. Just look at how fast you rebounded.
Joel: So maybe I was just meddling more than anything else. Maybe it was all for my own satisfaction.
  1. I appreciated it, Joel. Really.

Choose: I appreciated it, Joel. Really.
(Captain) grins and gives Joel a playful shoulder bump as they walk side by side.
Joel: (Captain)...
Joel: Seeing you smile brings me so much joy.
Joel: But the truth is, that's not enough for me.
Joel: I want to see every side of you, whatever expression you're wearing.
Joel: If you're ever feeling worn out, I want to be there to support you. Now and always.
Joel: Is that all right?
  1. We'll support each other.
  2. Together forever.

Choose: We'll support each other.
Joel: ...!
Joel: It means a lot to know you feel the same way.

Choose: Together forever.
Joel: Yeah. Until we're old and gray.
Continue 1
Joel: I want to be your...
Joel: Oh, whoops. I almost skipped straight to the end again. Sorry, let me start over.
Joel: The other day at the beach, a kid told me I was like his mom.
Joel: When I heard that, I thought of the ocean. It's kind yet strict, like a mother—somewhere you can always come home to.
Joel: So that's why...
Joel trails off, and both he and (Captain) pause in their steps.
Joel: I want to be your ocean.
Joel: A place you can come home to and feel safe.
He looks at the captain with a gaze as peaceful as the still waters at dusk.
As the two face each other, a damp sea breeze brushes against their cheeks.
Joel: Oh, the wind's gotten a little cooler.
Joel: Sorry for rambling. But I appreciate you hearing me out.
Joel: Let's head back before it gets too chilly.
The feelings in Joel's heart, once blazing like the evening sun, have begun to transition into a soothing breeze at summer's end.
Vyrn: Sooo hooot...
The next day, the crew continues to struggle against the relentless summer heat.
Vyrn: What happened to that cool weather last night? Talk about a fake-out...
Joel: It happens. The weather likes to tease us when the seasons are changing.
Vyrn: Is it just me, or do the summers just keep gettin' longer? C'mon, give fall a turn already.
Joel: Summer is my favorite season, but I get where you're coming from.
Joel: Now, how about we work on toughening up to beat this lingering heat? Since Lyria's on breakfast duty, (Captain) and I will go for a quick jog first.
Vyrn: Are you tryin' to melt?
Joel: It's fine. We can't control the seasons or the weather, but building up our stamina should make things more bearable.
Joel: All right, let's start with some stretches. Spread your arms out wide like this. That's it, (Captain). Deep breaths...
Vyrn: Well, I guess sittin' around gripin' isn't gonna change anything.
Joel: No pressure, but if you want to join us, I'd be happy to come up with a personalized workout routine for you, Vyrn.
Joel: And one for you too, (Captain).
Whatever the turning of the seasons may bring, Joel's desire to provide heartfelt health guidance to those he cares about remains unchanged.
Though sweat glistens on his forehead, his expression appears cooler and calmer than ever before.
