Happy Birthday Cutscenes

Happy birthday, (Captain)! I'm glad we can celebrate this day together!
So, where's you measuring pillar? You know, so we can mark how much you've grown in the last year.
Huh? You guys don't use pillars? You use walls?
That works too!
Go stand against it, and I'll mark how tall you've gotten!

2

So today's your birthday, (Captain)!
Let's take this chance to mark your current height on the post.
Hey, which post was it that we used for this kind of thing again?
Ahaha... So you don't remember either, huh?
Hmm... Let's try comparing your height against mine then...
By pressing our backs against each other.
There! That's your height!
It'll go more smoothly next year. I'll continue to be your post, and that means you'll be able to measure your growth anytime, anywhere.
So our difference in height is...
Gozaru! If I get any taller, there won't be much point comparing with me anymore.
Ahaha... I guess we'll have to use a proper post after all.

3

Happy birthday, (Captain)!
I'm so happy we can celebrate your birthday like this again!
Huh? Next time, you want to celebrate mine too?
Gozaru! Thanks, (Captain)!
Hehe, celebrating birthdays brings back memories...
When I was little, my parents dressed me up in a pretty kimono and we celebrated my birthday together.
I really loved that kimono... But now that I've grown up, I can't fit into it anymore.
Gozaru! That reminds me, I haven't had my height measured yet this year.
Come on, (Captain). Let's go get our heights measured!

4

Hm... It seems you've grown taller again, (Captain).
See, this line here was your height from two years ago. This one is from last year, and now you're up to here!
I don't notice so much since we see each other every day, but the difference is amazing when we compare it like this.
If you keep getting taller at this rate, you'll eventually hit the ceiling.
And sooner or later, you'll be as big as a Daidarabotchi... Oh, that's something from a tale passed down in my hometown.
Stories say that a Daidarabotchi is so gigantic that it can cross several islands in a single step...
Hehe. I'm looking forward to seeing just how much taller you'll be next year!
Gozaru! I almost forgot to say something very important!
Happy birthday, (Captain)!

5

Gozaru-gozaru? (Captain), I think...
You've gotten shorter!
That's impossible... But, look. This is where you came up to this year, and that notch is from last year...
Gozaru? What do you mean, it's not from last year? You nicked the post during sword practice?
Hah! That explains so much.
Here, let's carve your name next to the height notches—save us from any more confusion in the future.
M-I-R-I-N. Perfect.
Wait! I completely blanked! That's my name!
No... I can't believe I engraved my name into someone else's room... Now I'm going to feel so embarrassed every time I look at it...
Well, at least we got your measurements, right? Happy birthday!

1

Good morning! Want to come look at this kadomatsu? It's a new year's decoration!
Don't you think the bamboo is really interesting? It's cut diagonally at a nice angle. But who do you think sliced this one?
Haha! Nope, not me! It was actually Katalina.
It's already the new year... Can you believe it? Time flies when you're traveling!

2

(Captain)! Happy New Year!
Embracing the new year while in a foreign land is as equally refreshing as it was back in my country.
I can't say if it's the overall atmosphere or whatnot, but there must be some sort of commonality that all places in the world share.
I'm reminded of the festive New Year's celebrations back home.
In my hometown, everyone would revel in the family get-togethers.
We'd partake in yummy food in addition to all sorts of fun and games, like Pin the Tail on the Donkey...
You're not familiar with it? I'll show you next time we get a chance. I hope you're looking forward to it.

3

The new year's here, (Captain)!
And here's a game of Pin the Tail on the Donkey, as promised!
So, to play, first you hang up this big picture of a donkey...
Then you take this tail and—you see how this end is sticky? You try to attach it to the donkey's behind.
I wouldn't be so confident. It's harder than it looks.
Eh? You don't see what's so hard about it?
Oh, I forgot! We need to blindfold you!
Now let's see you try to pin the tail on the donkey!
Ahahahaha! No, that's my face! Ahahahaha! That tickles!

4

Happy New Year, (Captain)! This may be a little early, but I challenge you to the first duel of the year!
Ta-da! Sugoroku! In my hometown, sugoroku's a classic game for New Year's. Behold!
Hehe, I know what you're thinking... This sugoroku set looks a bit special, doesn't it?
This is actually something I made together with Mother and Father when I was little. It's one of a kind!
We made it with a fantastical setting, taking place in a cruel world where you must endure the harsh penalties written on each space... A game of life and death!
A penalty where everyone tickles you, and one where you get sandwiched between other people... Or the one where your nose gets tickled...
Let's get everyone in the crew to play together! Hehe. To battle!

5

En garde...
Haah!
Gozaru! Think this year's the cleanest cut I've made yet!
Oh, (Captain)! Happy New Year! I was just slicing these bamboo decorations.
I like to see if the cuts are cleaner than the previous year's. You know, as a marker for progress.
And look! This one is basically art!
This is only the fifth New Year's since I joined the crew... I can't believe I've already grown this much. Here's to another amazing year together!

Valentine's Day Cutscenes

1

(Captain), I thought I would try my hand at one of these cultural traditions... So I made some chocolate!
It was my first time, so it wasn't that easy. I finished it by using some mirin—that's sweet rice wine. Gotta say, it makes for a pretty interesting flavor!
Go ahead, try some!
Hahaha! Got you! I didn't add mirin at all.
It was wasabi! Haha, wasabi!
Well, have some more!

2

It's that time of the year again! Just the thought of it makes me tense.
Once again I put all my tender love and care into making this chocolate for you.
I'm pretty confident about it!
I know you had a taste last year, but I changed it up a bit this time.
I used red bean paste to go with the chocolate!
You won't find anything sweeter where I'm from. Red bean paste and chocolate might as well be a match made in heaven!
Here, (Captain)—have a bite!

3

(Captain)! So today's Valentine's, right?
And I've got chocolates right here—wouldn't forget about them for the world.
Everyone seemed to like the chocolates I made last year—you know, with the red bean paste. So this year, I mixedin an old favorite from back home: tea powder.
I tried the chocolates out, and I think they turned out well.
But I find it... interesting. I never thought that our bitter teas would pair so well with sweet chocolates. I mean, they're two different flavors born on two different islands.
I'm starting to think that chocolates can taste good no matter what I put into them.
Oh, I know! Next, I'll try flavoring them with soy sauce.
It's going to be so good!

4

It's the day you've long been waiting for... Happy Valentine's, (Captain)!
As promised, I put soy sauce in this year's chocolates!
Don't look so scared. Back home, we have this flavor called "mitarashi." It's soy sauce based and very sweet! I'm sure these turned out fine!
Sweet and savory might seem like opposites, but they actually mix very well.
I heard on the wind that, somewhere, sea salt chocolates are pretty popular.
If we take that one step further, maybe we can start adding in salted fish entrails or pickled plums.
Next year is going to be amazing! I'll revolutionize the world of sweets!

5

(Captain)! Happy Valentine's!
I've got a surprise for you this year... I had my mother send me ingredients so I could make these chocolates taste even more like home!
Here you are! They may look like normal chocolates, but what about the smell?
Notice anything? That fragrance you're detecting...
Is a rich bonito broth, complete with the umami of seaweed, shiitake, and dried sardine!
My mother's got a special way of condensing all that flavor so that one spoonful turns plain porridge into a savory symphony!
Come on, (Captain). One bite, and you'll know what it's like to dine at a first-class restaurant back home.

1

A present for me? Hehe, it must be White Day.
Thank you!
We don't have this holiday where I'm from. It's a day kind of like Valentine's Day, isn't it?
I'm learning so much. You've given me both a present and some knowledge.
I'll never forget this kindness!

2

A gift for me? Why, thank you.
Right, I figured this was for... White Day, was it? See, I even remembered the name correctly.
It's the day to return favors from Valentine's Day.
Seeing people in foreign lands with such a strong sense of moral obligation reminds me of home.
Come to think of it, this tradition would be popular where I'm from too...
Okay, I've decided! When I eventually get back, I'll be sure to spread this wonderful custom of gift exchange on special days!

3

(Captain)! Thank you for the White Day present.
Ahaha. I know it's just a thank-you gift, but still... I can't help but feel like I've imposed on you.
I guess I like giving more than receiving.
When you give a present, you have to think about the recipient... And all of a sudden, you're dying to get to know them better.
You start wanting to get closer to them.
Gozaru? You feel the same way, (Captain)?
Oh, that makes me so happy! It's almost like we can read each other's minds.

4

This is in return for Valentine's, right? Thank you, (Captain)!
Year four and counting... I thought I'd be used to getting presents from you by now, but I still feel a bit awkward.
But, more than anything, I'm happy you think of me every year.
Still, I don't like only being on the receiving end.
How would you like some delicious dango? To thank you for your thank-you gift!
What? But then you'll need to find another present to thank me for thanking you for thanking me?
Let's not think too hard about this! Come on, hurry!
If we don't leave now, the kinako-mochi's going to sell out! No, this is definitely not just to satisfy my own cravings!

5

Ooh. I get another White Day gift this year? Thanks!
Haha... It's just, I can't stop myself from feeling bad... But it'd be weird to give you a thank-you gift for a thank-you gift.
Hmph... It's going to bother me. I feel like I have to show my appreciation, you know?
Huh? You're happy just seeing me worry about this stuff?
Oh, I get it! Sometimes, it's enough just knowing the other person is thinking about you. I feel the same.
Hehe. From now on, guess I'll worry away then!

1

Halloween? Is that the event celebrated to appease evil spirits?
I guess the closest thing we have back home is the Obon ceremony—it's a custom we have to honor the dead.
It would be nice if I could see the spirit of my old puppy Shiro today...

2

It's so much fun just watching everyone frolic about on Halloween.
At first just seeing all the bizarre costumes was enough to leave me completely bewildered.
But I heard something really neat about Halloween.
By saying "Boo! I'm the boogeyman!"—or was it something else...
Anyway, rumor has it just saying that to everyone will get me lots of candy.
Ah, you'll give me candy too? I guess it really works then!
I'm gonna go try it on someone else now!

3

(Captain), trigger tree!
Wait, you're not giving me any candy...
Gozaru? Did I get it wrong again?
Hmm, this is hard... I heard it just a minute ago but I've already forgotten...
Please (Captain)! Can you say it one more time?
Hmm. Trick... o'treat...
Ahaha... Foreign phrases are really hard to remember...

4

Inhale... Exhale... Here I go, (Captain)!
Tr...
Trick, er, treet!
How's that! Did I say it properly this time, (Captain)?
I passed?
Yaaay! Finally, I can say it now!
It seems the special training I've been doing this past year paid off!
Now I can enjoy Halloween together with everyone!
Okay, (Captain)! Are you ready?
Trigger three!
Oops.

5

It's do or die...
Tricka Treatooo!
So... how was it? My incantation of your strange spell. I practiced twice as hard as last year.
Perfect? You could actually understand me?
Gozaru! I'm so happy!
The truth is, I had the crew give me some pronunciation tips.
That's when I learned that, personally, it helps to stop thinking about the meaning of the words. I need to just parrot whatever sounds are thrown at me.
I need to thank the crew again later. All their advice worked like a charm!

This is the cake I've been hearing about! It's so pretty!
But when it comes to sweets, looks aren't everything. I won't be fooled by its appearance!
Let's eat!
Gozaru! This is just as delicious as anmitsu! Other countries are great at desserts!

2

Thanks a bunch for inviting me to the seasonal party!
I was just thinking that it'd be nice to study how best to act during such an event!
It'll expand my horizons and deepen my knowledge of foreign cultures.
By the way will that exotic sweet everyone knows as cake be available?
Oh, I definitely don't have any ulterior motives...
Ahaha... Okay, I'll confess.
Truth is, I just want cake!

3

It's freezing tonight. And there are so many clouds...
Oh! Look, look! It's snowing!
Amazing... I'd always heard about snowy evenings—how breathtaking they are, but...
This really is something special, isn't it?
Um, by the way, shouldn't we get going? To the party, I mean. I'm looking forward to the cake.
Ahaha... You're right. I really do care more about cake than snow!
Reminds me of a saying we have back home. Hana yori dango.

4

Whew... Buying things for the party is a tougher job than I thought...
There's so many interesting dishes available during the winter season that my eyes can hardly keep up.
Not to mention, every year, we're getting more and more varieties of food and desserts at our crew's party.
Ahaha... Talking about food sure makes you hungry.
Actually, I'm really looking forward to the Valtz roast chicken the main cook for tonight was talking about...
Gozaru! You have your eyes on the chicken too, (Captain)? Well, you can't have it all, okay? Let's split it!
Hehe. We can cut it in half and share it! Aah, I can't wait... But first, we need to bring back these ingredients!
Come on, (Captain)! A delicious feast's waiting for us, so let's do our best to help too!

5

Ngh... Ninety-seven, ninety-eight, ninety-nine...
One hundred!
Pant... Pant... Oh, (Captain)... I'm just doing my sit-ups...
The crew's winter party is tonight, isn't it?
And my sash has been feeling a bit tight lately, if you know what I mean... But there's no way I'm missing out on the cake.
So of course, the only solution is sit-ups! I can have my cake and my abs too! That's the way of the samurai!
(Captain)? Sorry to bother you, but would you mind holding down my feet? I'm gonna aim for 1,000 in a single set!

Tearful Parting

Arriving at a lakeside campground on Groz Island, Mirin is ready to kick back with Shion, but Shion is determined to spend her time learning an underwater sword technique. After Shion dashes off to train, Mirin decides to have enough fun for the both of them, and joins (Captain) and friends for some swimming.

Hoping for a fun outdoor experience, (Captain) and friends visit a lakeside campground on Groz Island.
Among their group, two girls wearing unique clothing stand out from the rest.
Mirin: There we go! Our space for the night is finished!
Shion: What an ordeal... Pitching a tent was a lot more difficult than I expected.
They take a moment to wipe their brows as a gentle breeze blows by, their movements jostling the beautiful blades hanging at their waists.
The upbeat one is Mirin, a genuine samurai born and raised in an island country to the far east.
The more reserved one is Shion, born in the same island country, but raised elsewhere. She strives to be just as true a samurai.
The two are childhood friends who, by fate or coincidence, were lucky enough to meet again aboard (Captain)'s ship.
Over the course of their journey together, they have become closer than ever before.
Mirin: The tent's just big enough to fit the both of us, like a mini home! Isn't it so cute?
Shion: It is, but... Time and tide don't wait for anyone. The sun is already high in the sky.
Mirin: Time and tide?
Mirin: Ah! You're right!
Mirin: That's enough hard work for the day. It's time to play!
Shion: ...
Vyrn: Your tent's staying upright, huh? Not half bad!
Mirin: Gozaru! We couldn't have done it without you showing us the ropes!
Lyria: Now that we're set up, should we find something to do? I brought the map with me.
Colorful drawings dot the map Lyria unfurls, showing the various leisure activities around the campground.
Mirin: River fishing... Hot springs... Even a sauna tent? Whatever that is, it sounds fun!
Mirin: Shion, what do you want to do?
Shion: I... wanted to go to the lake...
Mirin: Yeah? I actually wanted to start there too!
Mirin: It's the perfect place to bust out our new special swimsuits!
Shion: That's true...
Vyrn: Special swimsuits? You guys got something like that?
Mirin: Yeah, Shion and I made them together!
Lyria: You did? That's really cool! I can't wait to see what they look like!
Mirin: Hehehe... You won't have to wait long! Let's go for a swim right now!
(Captain) gives an eager thumbs-up, but before the group can go gather their gear, Shion speaks up.
Shion: I won't be swimming.
Mirin: Oh... Are you bad at it? It's okay, we can stick to the shallows...
Shion: I'm not going to relax. I intend to train there.
Mirin: Train? In the lake?
Shion explains that, in order to learn an underwater sword technique she read about in a book, she seeks a quiet spot in the lake to practice.
Hearing about the seemingly impossible nature of the technique, Mirin bounces on her feet, for a moment looking ready to dive into the lake and start practicing herself...
Mirin: Wait, hold on! Why don't we save the training for later?
Mirin: I thought you wanted to relax in our new swimsuits together!
Shion: I-I do, but... the lake is right there. It's the perfect opportunity, and the water is calling to me...
Mirin: Well, I'm calling to you too! Hey, Shion, let's hang out! Come on!
Shion: Mirin...
Shion: (You don't know how much I want to!)
Shion: (But I'll never become a true samurai and catch up to you if I give in.)
Vyrn: Er... I hate to interrupt, but you should probably make up your minds soon. Sun's not gonna be up forever, y'know?
Mirin: Right, the time!
Lyria: Why not hang out today and train tomorrow? Or train today and hang out after?
Shion: I don't know how long it will take me to learn the technique. I might even have to spend the entire duration of our stay training.
Mirin: N-no way...
Prepared to unleash her best puppy dog eyes, Mirin hesitates when she sees the determination in Shion's gaze.
Mirin: You're not going to give in... are you? Just like when you want the last piece of cake and won't take no for an answer.
Shion: Exactly. I'm determined to do this.
Mirin: Okay, then let me help! I'll carry your bags, get you drinks—whatever you need!
Shion: Th-that's... There's no need to trouble yourself on my behalf.
Mirin: I'll trouble myself as much as I have to! You'll finish faster if you have my help, right? Then we can relax sooner rather than later!
Shion: ...!
Shion: (She's giving me the look! Maybe I should just say yes...)
Shion: (No, bad Shion! Keep it together!)
Mirin: Shion? Why'd you slap yourself?
Shion: Um... There was a bug.
Shion: (I'll never be able to focus if Mirin's around.)
Shion: (But if I tell her that, I'll only hurt her feelings! There's only one thing I can do...)
Mirin: Gozaru! Why are you running!
Shion: My apologies, but this is the only way! Go enjoy your time with the others!
Shion: (I'm sorry, Mirin. This is goodbye!)
Mirin: Shiooon!
Despite Mirin's desperate wail, Shion disappears into the distance.
Mirin: No... Shion, how could you leave me?
Vyrn: Hey, now... It's not like you'll never see her again. She'll be back for dinner, yeah?
Mirin: Ah! Yeah, you're right.
Mirin: If she's that serious about it, then I guess I should cheer her on!
Mirin: You go, Shion! You've got this!
After a few quiet moments, Mirin raises a determined fist into the air.
Mirin: There's one more thing I can do for her, even if we can't be together...
Mirin: And that's to have enough fun for the both of us!
Lyria: That's the spirit! You can tell Shion everything we do today once she comes back tonight!
Mirin: Gozaru!
Mirin: Okay, (Captain), are you ready to have some fun?
  1. I sure am!

Choose: I sure am!
At the enthusiastic response, Mirin gives a sunny smile.
The group change into their swimwear and head for the lake.
Despite the noon sun overhead, their day is just getting started.

Samurai Together

(Captain) and company remind Mirin that Shion will be back in the evening, when the camping fun really begins. Hoping to serve Shion an amazing dinner, Mirin asks the crew to help her catch the River King, an enormous fish that supposedly lives in the nearby river.

Shelving her desire to spend time with her friends, Shion has left for a deserted part of the lake in order to train.
Meanwhile, Mirin and the others have come to the swimming area of the lake, determined to make the most of their time off.
Mirin: I'm first! That's another win for me!
Lyria: I couldn't keep up at all... You're so fast!
Mirin: I've got plenty more laps in me! Let's swim to that rock next—
Vyrn: Hold your horses! This is like our tenth race in a row! At least let me catch my breath...
Mirin: Is it? Huh. I didn't notice.
Vyrn: Yeah. You keep taking us on weird routes too, like you're searching through the lake for something.
Lyria: Oh... Are you trying to find Shion?
Mirin: Gozaru?
Mirin: Sorry, I wasn't doing it on purpose. I must've unconsciously been on the lookout...
Vyrn: You were doin' it completely by accident? You serious...
Mirin gives the group a sheepish smile as they exchange incredulous looks.
Lyria: You said that you made your swimsuit with Shion, right?
Mirin: Yes! We wanted to celebrate our reunion somehow, and with summer right around the corner, we figured swimsuits would be perfect.
Mirin: I dyed the fabric, while Shion handled all the tailoring.
Lyria: You both definitely put your skills to good use. Your swimsuit fits you perfectly!
Mirin: Ehehe... Thank you!
Mirin: I just wish Shion was here too, so we could enjoy our hard work together.
Lyria: Mirin...
Mirin: Not that I'm not having fun with you guys!
Mirin: But it would've been nice to be able to hang out with Shion after everything, you know?
  1. You still can.

Choose: You still can.
Mirin: Huh?
Vyrn: You may not get to splash in the water together, but there's always tonight.
Vyrn: You've still got dinner, chatting next to the campfire, sleeping in your tent together...
Vyrn: Honestly, the best parts of camping only happen after the sun goes down.
Mirin: Ah, you're right! I still have plenty of chances to spend time with Shion once she comes back!
Mirin: I feel silly now for thinking we wouldn't get to hang out at all!
With a relieved smile, Mirin begins to picture what the evening might have in store.
Mirin: (Shion will probably be tired after all that training. I wonder what she'd want to eat...)
Mirin: (Hmm... Maybe something nutritious that we can make a lot of...)
Mirin: That's it! The River King!
Vyrn: Uh... What're you goin' on about now?
Mirin: It was one of the pictures on the map! Apparently there's a huge fish you can catch in one of the rivers flowing from the lake!
Lyria: Now that you mention it, I do remember seeing that. The text said something like "You, too, could catch a River King that lurks beneath the surface."
Vyrn: Could, huh? Sounds kinda fake to me.
Mirin: Well, even if it is, we can still have fun fishing and catch a few normal sized fillets!
Mirin: (Captain), what do you think?
Seeing Mirin so enthusiastic, (Captain) agrees without hesitation.
They quickly pack their things, leaving the swimming area behind in search of tonight's dinner.

Samurai Together: Scene 2

Mirin and the crew fish in the river with handmade rods. Too focused on her technique, Mirin accidentally sends her rod flying into the distance, but makes herself a new one soon after. Just when the group is about to give up hope, the River King shows, and Mirin makes short work of it with her sword.

Arriving at the river, Mirin and crew fashion fishing rods out of bamboo and waste no time casting their lines out.
For a while, Mirin simply watches the bobber attached to her line.
Mirin: ...
Mirin: (Throwing the line out like this takes me back... The wrist movement reminds me of all the exercises I did back home to learn how to unsheathe and cut in one motion.)
Mirin: (I'd focus super hard, and the moment I heard my father give the command, I'd draw my sword and...)
Vyrn: Hey, Mirin, how's—
Mirin: Strike!
Mirin: Gozaru! Uh-oh, that wasn't a command...
Lyria: Oh gosh, you really threw that rod into the distance!
Mirin: Ahaha... Sorry, my reflexes got the better of me, and I whipped it out like a katana... Messed up how much strength to use too.
Vyrn: Sheesh, how in the world did ya confuse a fishing rod with a weapon?
Her original rod lost forever, Mirin sets about making herself a new one.
The crew spend a while longer trying their luck, but not a single fish comes to take a nibble at their bait.
Vyrn: Forget the River King, we're not gonna have any fish for dinner at this rate.
Mirin: Gozaru... This was a lot harder than I thought it'd be...
Mirin: Wait, do you sense that powerful aura?
Vyrn: Gah! Since when do rivers spawn huge waves? They're goin' upstream too!
Lyria: We should get away from the water!
Mirin: Not so fast!
Mirin: Doesn't anybody else see that huge shadow lurking below?
Lyria: Is that... a fish?
Vyrn: No way... You're tellin' me the River King actually exists, and it's hiding beneath the waves?
Mirin: Gozaru! I won't let this chance slip away!
Mirin: Get back, everyone!
Mirin takes a step toward the surging waters, closing her eyes in a calm and collected manner.
Mirin: ...
Mirin: (Remember my training. Focus on the timing! Picture the training dummy!)
Mirin: (If I get it right, I can take down any foe, no matter how big!)
Mirin: Flowing Phoenix Spin—
Mirin: Strike!

Samurai Together: Scene 3

Finished with her training, Shion comes back to a fish feast with the crew and is moved by Mirin's efforts. Later that evening, Mirin and Shion settle down inside their tent and share how much they admire one another before finally falling asleep, eager to enjoy the rest of their trip together.

Just as the sun begins to set, Shion wraps up her training and heads back to where the crew pitched their tents.
Shion: I have returned.
Mirin: Welcome back, Shion! How'd your training go?
Shion: It wasn't all smooth sailing, but in the end, I managed to master the underwater Bonsai art.
Mirin: Gozaru? In a single day?
Shion: Yes, thanks to a chance encounter and a lucky fishing rod.
Vyrn: Er... You talkin' about that bamboo stick you're lugging around?
Shion: Indeed. I plan to treasure it, as a reminder of the precious experience I had today.
Shion: But never mind that. Mirin, I sincerely apologize for running away earlier. It was behavior unbefitting of a samurai.
Mirin: Don't worry about it! It was partially my fault for being so pushy anyway.
Shion: No, I was the one in the wrong, and I want to make it up to you. I'm prepared to slit my own belly open, if that's what it takes...
Mirin: Okay, there's no need for that! But if it really bothers you that much...
Mirin: Why not hang out with me? You do that, and I'll consider us even!
Shion: Huh?
Mirin: The real camping fun doesn't start until after it gets dark, or so I've heard! And we prepped a whole bunch for it!
Breaking out into a grin, Mirin points proudly behind her shoulder.
River King: ...
Shion: What an enormous specimen of a fish! It's as big as a tent...
Lyria: Hehe, I'd say Mirin caught it, but it was more like she filleted it on the spot!
Vyrn: Her blade even cut through a buncha huge waves like it was nothing! Turned all that water into mist!
Mirin: Gozaru! You must be hungry after all that training, right? How does a fish feast sound?
Shion: Mirin... Did you catch that just for me?
Mirin: I caught it for us!
Mirin: We've still got plenty of time to make the most of this trip! So how about it?
Shion: I... I would be more than happy to join you for this fish feast.
Shion: Thank you, Mirin.
With not much daylight left to work with, the group quickly gets to preparing the River King.
By the time they finish, a row of dishes line their fireside table.
Mirin: There you have it—a full-course River King Samurai Special!
Vyrn: It's mostly just grilled fish and rice balls though...
Shion: There is only so much we can do in the middle of a campground.
Mirin: Ahaha... I mean, not everything has to be perfect, right? I kind of like it this way!
Shion: That's true. Rice balls are simple enough for anybody to attempt, and everyone makes them differently.
Lyria: Hehe, Mirin's are big, while Shion's are neat little triangles!
Mirin: Huh, I didn't even notice. You know, yours are just as big as mine, Lyria!
Vyrn: When Lyria's hungry, she doesn't hold back. Anyway, we should dig in before the food gets cold!
Everybody nods in agreement, and the grand fish feast kicks off.
Shion: This is delicious! Fish and rice always go very well together.
Mirin: Yeah, it's like they were meant to be!
Shion: Hm? Why are you looking at me like that? Do I have rice stuck to my face?
Mirin: No, no, I was just thinking about something, that's all!
Mirin: (Everything really is more fun when I'm with you, Shion.)
Smiling to herself, Mirin takes another bite of her rice ball.
As the evening winds down, Mirin and Shion find themselves side by side in their small tent, ready to fall asleep.
Shion: Oops... I'm sorry, I didn't mean to bump into your legs.
Mirin: Naw, it's fine. I'm the one with my arm pressed against you, after all.
Shion: It is pretty cramped in here... I'm reminded of when we were kids.
Mirin: Oh! You mean when we hid in the closet that one time?
Shion: That's right. Your dog Shiro jumped in too and made things even more cramped...
Mirin: Those were some good times. Why did we even hole up in there in the first place?
Shion: I'm not sure... Kids do tend to find strange ways to entertain themselves.
Mirin: Ahaha, that's true.
Shion: ...
Mirin: ...
Shion: Did you really reduce water to mist with nothing but your blade?
Mirin: I think so. I was so focused on my imaginary training dummy that I wasn't paying that much attention though...
Shion: Your... imaginary training dummy? I'm afraid I don't fully understand, but...
Shion: What I do know is that you are a true samurai, through and through. A false samurai like me could never compare.
Shion: (You're like a distant, brilliant star...)
Shion: (Forever out of reach, even though you're right here next to me.)
Mirin: What? No. If anything, you're the real samurai out of the both of us.
Shion: What...
Mirin: I mean, you spent your free time training and managed to learn that underwater art in under a day.
Mirin: You're always thinking about what it means to be a samurai. I kind of look up to that part of you, you know?
Shion: ...!
Mirin: Plus you're a master at sewing and removing fish bones... I could never beat you there.
Shion: W-well, you're a master at dyeing fabric and filleting fish...
Mirin: Ahaha, that just means we're both awesome then!
Shion: You really think so?
Mirin: I sure do! But we've still got lots more room to be even more awesome, so let's keep at it!
Shion: Right... Yeah.
Mirin: Anyway, we should probably get to sleeping. We've got a busy day tomorrow—I can't wait to swim some more, and visit the hot spring, and check out the sauna tent!
Shion: Indeed. Good night, then?
Mirin: Good night it is!
Before long, Mirin's breathing relaxes into a slow, steady pattern as she finally falls asleep.
Shion: ...
Shion: (I wasn't entirely truthful. I do remember why we hid in the closet that day.)
Shion: (I was watching you practice your cutting technique, and for a moment, it felt like you belonged to a different world...)
Shion: (One that I wasn't a part of. So I pulled you into that closet. That way, you'd be right by my side.)
After a few moments of restless squirming, Shion rolls over to gaze at Mirin's sleeping face.
Shion: (But you know what?)
Shion: (My younger self had nothing to worry about. You're still here, with me. No closet needed.)
With a renewed understanding of themselves and each other, tomorrow promises to be a fun-filled day.
Their paths as samurai may be different, but the bond between them will always remain.
