Sins and Evil

(Captain) and company receive a request to look for skyfarers who have gone missing. Arriving at an island on the outskirts of the Tripla Archipelago, they are reunited with Parashurama, a disciple of Shiva who once fought alongside the crew against monsters called asura. Parashurama is on a mission from Shiva to grant salvation to a soul trapped on the island. The crew suggest that they work together.

One day, (Captain) and company receive a request to search for skyfarers that have gone missing during an investigation.
The crew follow the skyfarers' trail and find themselves on a small island in the outskirts of the Tripla Archipelago.
Monster: ...
Monster Horde: ...!
Vyrn: Argh, not again! The second we take one out, more start poppin' up!
Lyria: What should we do... Our path's completely blocked now!
Outnumbered, the crew struggles to find an opening to escape the hordes of monsters.
???: Haaah!
Monster Horde: ...!
Vyrn: Cough, cough! What is it now?
???: Burn!
Monster Horde: ...!
A cataclysmic fire swallows the monsters, burning them to a crisp.
Gradually, the cloud of dust and ash clears to reveal a figure standing in front of the crew.
Lyria: This voice and presence...
Is that you, Parashurama?
Parashurama: Ah, so it is you! It has been a while, my friends! I'm glad to find you in good health.
The man with a smile on his face is Parashurama.
Parashurama was born as a mortal, but under some circumstances, he was turned into a primal beast and has since trained under Shiva as his disciple.
He once fought alongside (Captain)'s crew against monsters called the asura, when disaster had fallen on the Tripla Archipelago.
Vyrn: It's been a while, Disciple Mister! Didn't think we'd run into you in a place like this!
Parashurama: Likewise. I'm surprised to see you on this island. Are you here for a job?
Lyria: Yeah! We received a request to look for some people... What about you?
Parashurama: I'm here on Mahadeva's orders to grant salvation to a soul bound to this island.
Vyrn: Salvation?
Parashurama: That's right. You see, I was training with Mahadeva a while ago...
Parashurama: Hrg...
Shiva: Is it the phantom sound again?
Parashurama: ...!
Mahadeva! I apologize for breaking my concentration...
Shiva: Pay no heed, for it is not a matter you can control. The problem lies elsewhere...
Shiva pauses, gazing at Parashurama thoughtfully.
Shiva: Parashurama. Are you aware what the core within you is?
Parashurama: No... I've only heard it is something that belonged to a certain primal beast. I'm afraid I do not know anything outside of that.
Shiva: Ah. I wonder if the specifics were undisclosed by intention, or if their revelation was restricted.
Shiva: But considering the matter... I am almost certain everything is proceeding as intended.
Parashurama: Mahadeva... Is the core inside me of an evil nature?
Shiva: Hm... What makes you think so?
Parashurama: If I may... I do sense a slight resentment from your aura.
Shiva: ...
I merely have a history with the one who changed your body.
Shiva: What you harbor is one of many fragments Vishnu made based on his own core.
Shiva: Vishnu is one of the primal beasts which manifested at the same time as myself, tasked with the granting of salvation.
Shiva: He oversaw preservation and protection, granting salvation to the children of man by overthrowing all evil.
Shiva: As such, he is far from evil himself. You need not worry.
Parashurama: Salvation... In that case, he must be a compassionate being like yourself, as one who watches over the children of man.
Shiva: Compassionate...
Parashurama: ...?
Mahadeva?
When Parashurama blinks in confusion, Shiva sighs, a grave look in his eyes.
Shiva: Parashurama, you are my disciple. You are also one who grants salvation, whilst harboring a fragment of Vishnu.
Shiva: I ask you: what is salvation?
Parashurama: Um...
Shiva: Answer me, truthfully and with your own words. No matter your answer, I shall not lay blame on you.
At his master's quiet tone, the disciple closes his eyes and thinks for a while.
Parashurama: As long as evil exists, it will continue to threaten the peace of this realm. As such, purification of evil is salvation itself.
Shiva: Then, what do you define as evil?
Parashurama: There are outlaws and villains, of course... and those of authority who prove arrogant and greedy. Everyone who is considered wicked in the realm of mortals.
Shiva: But they may not always remain evil. A wicked person can mend their ways and become a virtuous person, while the opposite is also true. What do you think of such a case?
Parashurama: Well...
Shiva: Regardless of any change in heart, goodwill can bring about disaster, while evil can save a person's life.
Shiva: There are always two sides to good and evil. The line between the two is often unclear in a realm riddled with turmoil.
Shiva: I ask you again: what do you define as evil? What should you destroy, and what should you save? Answer me, Parashurama.
Unable to bear his master's steadfast gaze, Parashurama covers his face in silence.
Shiva: So you have no answer for me.
Parashurama: P-please, wait! I...
Shiva: Be at ease. If your heart is wavering, then you possess yet a choice on the path you are to follow.
Shiva pauses again, an undecipherable expression on his face, before continuing.
Shiva: Parashurama. I shall grant you a trial.
Shiva: Venture to an island where a pitiful soul drowns in grudges and hatred—and save it.
Shiva: Depending on your performance, it may be that you will leave my side and walk another path.
Parashurama: Another... path?
Parashurama: D-do you mean to say that... I am not adequate to be your disciple?
Shiva: No, the contrary. It is because I have high hopes that I wish for you to overcome this trial—for I could not save that soul myself.
Parashurama: Impossible... There are those even the great Mahadeva is unable to save?
Shiva: They do not wish, nor do they pray. I cannot save those who do not seek salvation.
Shiva: All I am able to provide is an end in the form of purification. But you...
Shiva: You were born from the mortal womb and have lived as one of them. There is a possibility that you can grant them salvation through a different means.
Shiva: What I am asking is for you to save what I could not. If you can carry out this task, then I will have reason to keep you by my side.
Shiva: If you intend to continue as my disciple and walk the same path, then overcome this trial and show me your conviction.
Parashurama: He told me, "I shall share my flame and entrust you with its embers. I pray you use this power fittingly."
Parashurama: That is how I received Mahadeva's embers and how we came to meet on this island.
Vyrn: Wow... But didja really need that Shiva plush to explain everything?
Vyrn points to the handmade doll in Parashurama's hand.
Parashurama: I thought it might be rather dull if I were the only one speaking. Isn't this quite the masterpiece?
Parashurama: I crafted it so that people of all ages, young and old, can know of Mahadeva and his splendid achievements.
Parashurama: After all, spreading his teachings is but another duty that I, as his adherent, should undertake!
Vyrn: Er, right... So you actually made that for a purpose. I thought...
Parashurama: Thought what?
Vyrn: Uh, n-never mind! Don't worry about it!
Vyrn: Anyway, so you can't be his disciple anymore if you don't get through this trial, huh? That sounds like a whole lotta pressure!
Parashurama: No matter the hardship, I must conquer the challenge in front of me.
He looks down at the toy resembling his beloved master.
Parashurama: I must find the answer to Mahadeva's question, and demonstrate that I am worthy to be his disciple...
  1. Do you want to work together?
  2. Let's get through it together.

Choose: Do you want to work together?
Vyrn: Yeah! The more hands we've got the better, and we can definitely help ya with your trial too!

Choose: Let's get through it together.
Lyria: I'm sure we were meant to meet on this island. As long as we're together, we can definitely get through anything!
Continue 1
Parashurama: But are you not here for your own objective? I would hate to burden others with my personal matters...
Vyrn: Don't sweat it! We're friends, right?
Lyria: Yeah! Besides, we're Shiva's adherents too. I don't think he'll be upset if we pitch in!
Parashurama: ...!
Haha, you have a point!
Parashurama: Very well, then let us proceed together. It has been a while since we worked as one—I shall do my utmost to keep up.
And with that, (Captain)'s crew and Parashurama exchange a firm handshake.

Karma

When the crew spot several figures resembling skyfarers in the forest, they follow them to an illusion of Parashurama's hometown. Suddenly, Parashurama is seized with an intense headache. Lyria suspects that another primal beast is trying to take over his consciousness. When the foe's miasma threaten their safety, Parashurama takes (Captain) and company and breaks through the hordes of asura, escaping into the forest.

Some time has passed since (Captain)'s crew and Parashurama decided to search the island together.
Monster: ...
Vyrn: Sigh... Just when we thought we found 'em, it's another monster... Are there any people on this island?
Lyria: Hmm... We've walked quite far, but we haven't seen a single trace of anyone...
Parashurama: I can feel the malice lurking on this island growing stronger. We should be heading in the right direction...
Parashurama: ...!
Vyrn: Hey, what's the matter? You hurt somewhere?
Parashurama: ...
I'm all right. It's nothing.
Lyria: (Just now... It seemed like Parashurama's consciousness was about to be taken over by another primal beast.)
Lyria shakes her head as if to clear her doubts. That's when she notices something flickering from the corner of her eye.
Lyria: Oh! Look over there!
Skyfarers: ...
When the others turn to look in the direction Lyria is pointing to, they make out the figures of several people heading toward the forest.
Vyrn: Hm? Could those be the skyfarers we were sent to look for?
Parashurama: Wait.
Before Vyrn can call out to them, Parashurama puts up a hand to stop him and looks sternly over at the shadows.
Parashurama: They do not possess the signs of living beings. Though I don't sense any hostility or ill intention, it would be unwise to approach them.
Lyria: Does that mean they're... gh-ghosts?
Parashurama: They are slightly different from apparitions, but I cannot tell any more than that, as their presence feels too weak.
Vyrn: What should we do then? We're gonna lose 'em if we don't act quick.
Parashurama: The fact that we've discovered something that we did not see earlier means... there must be some sort of clue around this area.
Parashurama: Let's follow them from a distance. We should keep our guard up, (Captain).
The group treads carefully behind the figures, walking deeper into the forest.
Vyrn: What's happenin'? It got foggy all of a sudden...
Lyria: Hngh... This is giving me the creeps...
Parashurama: They're quite a ways ahead of us... We need to hurry before we lose sight of them.
As the mist around them grows thicker, Parashurama uses his senses to continue following the mysterious figures.
Vyrn: Why's there a town all the way out here?
After walking for a while longer, the mist suddenly clears to reveal a lively town.
Strangely, the bustling townspeople don't seem to notice their visitors. When the crew reach out to them, they find their fingers passing through the people like mist.
Parashurama: This place...
Lyria: Do you know something about it?
Parashurama: The drunk men over there are soldiers from the royal palace. I remember fighting alongside them in the battle against Taraka.
Parashurama: As for that stall on the street corner... When I was little, I used to sneak out of the palace to buy sweets from there.
Parashurama: They all resemble what I know from days past.
Vyrn: So this island's where you're from?
Parashurama: No. I believe this is some sort of illusion created by someone.
Parashurama: Neither my country nor the islands that belonged to it exist today in the Tripla Archipelago.
Parashurama: After all, the asura invasion and the attack I unleashed with Vijaya... erased everything from these skies long ago.
Parashurama slowly closes his eyes, tracing his memories from once upon a time.
Parashurama: My memory of that time is still vivid, even to this day.
Parashurama: After the war against the asura forces, I came back to find my country completely changed.
Parashurama: Miasma filled the air, the streets were in shambles, and the people had morphed into grotesque creatures. Cries grated my ears as the wind carried the smell of decay.
Parashurama: Asura had taken over the land, without a trace of anything that resembled a person—living or dead.
Parashurama: The bodies of my father and my brothers were hung up in the palace courtyard. Only my mother retained her natural shape.
Parashurama: I threw away my life as a mortal that day, because I swore to myself that I will never let such hell repeat itself.
Parashurama: However, in reality, my efforts have been fruitless and I have done nothing but cause trouble for all of you and Mahadeva.
Parashurama's tone is light, his expression revealing nothing of his emotions. (Captain) and company exchange worried glances.
Vyrn: Hey, you sure you're not pushin' yourself too hard?
Parashurama: ...?
I'm afraid I do not follow.
Vyrn: It's hard to explain, but it's kinda scary how we've got no idea what you're actually thinking.
Parashurama: I see... You cannot understand what I am thinking. I wonder—how should one think and feel in a time like this?
Vyrn: Huh?
Parashurama: There is nothing in me. Despite being able to recollect the past so clearly, my heart remains calm.
Parashurama: No longing, regret, loneliness... not even hatred toward the king who took everything from us. I am filled with an endless void.
Parashurama: I did not think I would lose my heart when I threw away my mortal life... but it seems I did.
Parashurama: The infuriating memories from that day are nothing but something of the past.
Vyrn: No way...
Parashurama: Well, there is nothing to be done. After all, it happened hundreds—perhaps thousands—of years ago.
Parashurama: Any emotion will fade when that much time has passed. Your heart itself will grow dim and eventually disappear.
Parashurama: Perhaps this is the price I must pay, as an ordinary person who obtained the power of a primal beast by force.
Lyria: Do you really think so?
Parashurama: Hm? What do you mean?
Lyria: I don't think how you feel now is because you obtained the power of primals.
Lyria: Primal beasts have emotions too. They become sad, lonely, angry... and happy too.
Lyria: When I think back to what Shiva and Alexiel have told us, I don't believe you've entirely lost your heart.
Lyria: At first I thought it was just my imagination, so I didn't say anything... but now, after listening to what you said, I'm sure of it.
Parashurama: Sure... of what?
Lyria: Parashurama, that other existence inside of you... It's most likely—
Parashurama: Urgh!
Lyria: ...!
Parashurama!
When Parashurama suddenly falls to his knees, (Captain) rushes forward to support him and notices a shift in the air.
People: ...
The hustle and bustle of the town vanishes as all the people turn their eyes on (Captain) and company.
Vyrn: Wh-what's going on? They didn't even notice we were here until now.
Parashurama: This feeling... I see now. You have all fallen victim to the asura!
Just then, countless dark hands appear at their feet and reach out to attack them.
Parashurama: Not so fast!
Vyrn: Cough, cough! What's with the smoke? I... can't breathe!
Parashurama: Cover your mouths, everyone! It's miasma from the asura!
Miasma oozes out from the hands that were ripped apart by (Captain) and Parashurama. As it envelops the area, the people begin to transform into grotesquely shaped monsters.
Asura Mutations: ...!
Parashurama: Rrg... Hroooh!
(Captain): ...!
Parashurama: Step back, (Captain)! We cannot take them down like this!
Parashurama: The more we defeat, the thicker the miasma will become! Even with Mahadeva's protection, your bodies will not be able to withstand it!
Parashurama: (I must find the source at once! But how can I do so in the midst of this chaos?)
Parashurama: What is that sound!
Vyrn: Hey, look! Over there!
Skyfarers: ...
Looking around for where the gunshots came from, (Captain) and company spot several figures beyond the throng of monsters.
The skyfarers from earlier in the forest can be seen running away in the distance, weapons in hand.
Lyria: Those are the people we saw earlier! We should follow them!
Asura Mutations: ...!
Vyrn: But how do we get past these monsters?
Parashurama: Leave it to me. If we cannot move forward, then we will move from above.
Lyria: Waaah!
Without warning, Parashurama pulls Lyria, Vyrn, and (Captain) tightly into his arms.
Asura Mutations: ...!
The moment the monsters rush toward them, Parashurama jumps high into the sky.

Karma: Scene 2

(Captain) and company head deeper into the forest and find a monstrous asura that has taken on the appearance of Parashurama's mother. Although he realizes this is the soul he must save, Parashurama nocks an arrow, prepared to take down what has robbed so many of their lives. When Lyria steps in to stop him, Parashurama remembers his task from Shiva and lowers his weapon. But another headache hits, together with a voice telling him to destroy the creature.

Vyrn: It's no good. I don't see those skyfarin' guys anywhere...
Parashurama: They've most likely gone on ahead. Their presence is getting weaker, but I can still feel it.
Parashurama: However...
Parashurama glances toward the depths of the forest before turning back to the others, his expression grim.
Parashurama: Creatures born of asura will be there. They possess enough power to oppose the king we once fought against together.
Lyria: Those large monsters again...
Parashurama: There is also the miasma. You may have the protection of Mahadeva himself, but there is no guarantee that you will remain unscathed.
Parashurama: For this reason... you must leave this island. I will carry out the rest of your mission.
Vyrn: Wha! We've made it this far! Now you're tellin' us to just go home?
Parashurama: I am saying that there is no need to risk your life in vain. This place will eat away at your life force the longer you stay.
Parashurama: Furthermore, if anything were to happen to you... I cannot bear to face Mahadeva again.
  1. We're in the same boat now.
  2. We're in this together, remember?

Choose: We're in the same boat now.
Vyrn: That's right! We're never gonna leave our friends behind, no matter what!

Choose: We're in this together, remember?
Lyria: Yeah! We promised to get through this together, and that's what we're going to do!
Continue 1
Parashurama: But...
Under the crew's steadfast gaze, Parashurama's words of protest die on his lips.
After a moment that seems to last forever, he breaks the silence.
Parashurama: Sigh... It is just as I feared. No matter what I say, you are impossible to sway once you have made your decision.
Vyrn: Heheh! Yep, even Colossus wouldn't be able to make us move!
Parashurama: Colo... Ah, the iron giant. If even a giant cannot move you, then there is no way for me to persuade you either.
Chuckling, he lets out a sigh and looks the crew in the eye.
Parashurama: Now, do you have the Shanti from Mahadeva?
Lyria: Of course! We make sure to take it with us every day.
Parashurama: Very good. This will be soon be over—stay still.
When Parashurama holds his hand above (Captain) and company, gentle flames envelop them.
Vyrn: Are these... Shiva's flames?
Parashurama: I cannot grant purifying divine protection like my master, so I have distributed a part of his embers to you.
Parashurama: Because the Shanti is connected to Mahadeva, it will amplify the embers and protect you from the effects of the miasma.
Parashurama: Still, this is merely a temporary peace of mind compared to the protection Mahadeva himself would be able to grant you. We will need to move fast.
Lyria: Got it! Let's go, Parashurama!
Nodding with determination, the crew takes a step toward the inner depths of the forest.
Man's Voice: I hate you... Ahh, I hate you so much! What did we do to deserve this!
Man's Voice: You brought our country to ruin. You killed the people!
Lady's Voice: You elicited the king's rage, but for what reason? Who was it that paid the price? Us, the people who committed no wrong!
Lady's Voice: It's all because of you! If only you didn't exist!
(Captain) and company find themselves in a space where cries of resentment fill the air.
Sobbing Woman: I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry...
Sobbing Woman: I'm sorry I resented you, even for a moment!
Parashurama: ...!
You're...
A woman sits on the floor, surrounded by monsters, as she cries endlessly with her face in her hands.
Parashurama: (So this is the soul that Mahadeva said I needed to save. Still, something doesn't feel right...)
He tightens his grasp on his weapon unconsciously.
Sobbing Woman: ...
Is someone there?
Sobbing Woman: Save me... I don't want to be here anymore...
The sorrow in the woman's voice is heart-wrenching. (Captain) responds by taking a step toward her but is promptly stopped.
Parashurama: ...!
Don't move, (Captain). It's a trap made to lure all of you.
Parashurama: The illusion of the skyfarers earlier was also something made to draw you to this place...
Parashurama: The very womb of the asura.
Glaring at the woman, Parashurama nocks an arrow without a shred of hesitation.
Parashurama: How dare you show yourself to me with that appearance.
Lyria: Huh? Do you know this lady?
Parashurama: Yes, there is no mistaking it. She is someone who died a long time ago...
Parashurama: My very own mother.
Parashurama's arrow is released and shoots straight at the woman resembling his mother.
But the arrow never reaches its target. A dark arm reaches out from the ground and snatches the arrow, snapping it.
Parashurama's Mother: Hehe... You've always been this way. Acting like the hero and flaunting your power. Slaughtering the asura mercilessly.
Parashurama: ...
Parashurama's Mother: You never doubted what you thought was right, until you received retaliation from the king.
Parashurama's Mother: You were nothing but an ordinary person. But you believed yourself to be in a position to carry out judgment, just like the great one.
Parashurama's Mother: Such arrogance! Such conceit! You created the curse that is us and bound us here until this day!
At her cry, the mist around them thickens, and the woman's form begins to mutate.
Lyria: ...!
Look at that!
Lyria points at the stomach of the large, mutated creature, where a number of people resembling skyfarers can be seen.
Parashurama: It's as I thought... You've been consuming those who wander into this place!
Parashurama's Mother: Hehe... Mortals are so simple. They can't help but empathize, leaping in to help the weak and the grieving.
Parashurama: Cursed asura... Not only did you take on my mother's guise, but you robbed the innocent of their lives!
Parashurama's Mother: Take on her guise? Ridiculous! You must already know... that this is a shadow of your mother herself!
Parashurama: ...!
Parashurama's Mother: I didn't want to become like this. But then, I found out you were the one who caused the death of all whom I loved... I didn't want to find out, but I did.
Parashurama's Mother: So I came to resent you. That was the trigger... I fell into the clutches of the asura, and our country collapsed.
Parashurama's Mother: All of that is your fault. If you never existed, we would've been able to die as mortals!
Parashurama: ...
Is that all you wanted to say?
Parashurama nocks another arrow. His eyes are unwavering as he focuses calmly on the foe.
Parashurama: I had a vague idea when I realized that only my mother retained her mortal form, even in that hellscape.
Parashurama: It proved that you are not my mother. You are nothing but evil that spreads hatred and consumes the lives of people.
Determined not to miss his target this time, Parashurama prepares to release the arrow...
Lyria: Parashurama, you can't!
Parashurama: ...!
Girl in Blue! Move aside!
Lyria: No! Isn't this person someone Shiva asked you to save?
Parashurama: Well...
Regaining his composure, Parashurama lowers his bow with a sigh before looking up at the creature once more.
Parashurama: Ergh!
Vyrn: Lyria, behind you!
Lyria: Huh?
At Vyrn's shout, Lyria whips around to see a legion of hands reaching out toward her.
Lyria: (Captain)! Thank you for saving me...
The captain had made it just in time to rescue Lyria from the enemy's grasp.
Vyrn: Mister?
Parashurama: ...
That thing is but a sly and despicable creature, created to deceive others. There is no need to empathize or have mercy on it. Destroy the evil.
Parashurama: (Quiet... Silence! No matter what you say, I cannot take the life of...)
Parashurama: Guh!
Lyria: This feeling... It's the same as before! Hang in there, Parashurama!
Lyria calls out to Parashurama, who has fallen to the ground, clutching his head.
Asura Monsters: ...!
And before they realize, the large mutations have (Captain) and company completely surrounded.

Karma: Scene 3

Vishnu briefly takes over Parashurama's consciousness, but (Captain) forcefully slams into Parashurama to help him return to himself. Reminded of his master's true request, Parashurama destroys only the asura and the resentment eating away at his mother's soul. When Shiva appears, his disciple prays for mercy on all the innocent souls who are suffering.

Asura Monsters: ...!
Vyrn: Cough, cough! I... can't breathe...
Lyria: ...!
Tiamat! Blow everything away!
Lyria: No way... Cough, cough!
Parashurama's Mother: Ahahaha! It's no use! The moment you stepped foot into this place, your fate was sealed!
As if responding to her laughter, the number of monsters increases and the mist grows ever thicker.
(Captain): ...!
Weapon drawn, (Captain) continues to fight to protect Vyrn and Lyria, but it is too much. Just when the captain finally falls...
Parashurama: I'll kill you.
Parashurama: I'll destroy everything. I don't need a reason why—all I need to do is eliminate all evil. That is the only path to salvation...
Vyrn: Hey, mister! Parashurama!
Vyrn desperately calls out to Parashurama as the man swings around his axe like a machine, his eyes empty.
But the calls fail to bring Parashurama back to his normal self. Corpses of monsters continue to pile up around them.
Vyrn: Cough... It's not workin'. He can't hear me at all!
Man's Voice: Aaah! It hurts... It's so painful, so hot!
Lady's Voice: You're making us suffer all over again... Aah... Curse you, curse you, curse you!
Parashurama: ...
He walks around slowly, slaying every monster as if to silence their sounds.
Despite the thickening mist, Parashurama's gaze is fixed on his sole prey—the mutated creature with his mother's voice.
Lyria: This doesn't feel like Parashurama. Could it be... Vishnu?
Lyria: We have to stop him fast! If we don't... his heart's going to disappear!
Lyria tries to stand, but her knees keep buckling under her.
Teeth grit, (Captain) musters the strength to stand and, with trembling legs, breaks out into a run.
Parashurama: Gwah!
The captain runs and uses the momentum to slam into Parashurama.
Parashurama: (Captain)!
Did I lose myself again...
Parashurama: But... should we truly save the creature? It's fallen so far... there may be no salvation for it other than destruction...
  1. Remember what Shiva said.

Choose: Remember what Shiva said.
Parashurama: What Mahadeva said...
Shiva: There are always two sides to good and evil. The line between the two is often unclear in a realm riddled with turmoil.
Shiva: I ask you again: what do you define as evil? What should you destroy, and what should you save? Answer me, Parashurama.
Parashurama: What should I destroy... and what should I save?
As he whispers this, a memory resurfaces of what his mother had said while she was crying.
Parashurama's Mother: I'm sorry I resented you, even for a moment!
Parashurama: Ahh... I see now. That's why you wanted to leave saving this soul... to me.
Parashurama smacks his cheeks hard, as if to wake himself up, and looks (Captain) in the eye.
Parashurama: I am calm now, thanks to you. I apologize for the trouble I caused, (Captain).
He turns back to the creature and readies his weapon once more.
Vyrn: ...!
Whaddya think you're doin', mister? It's dangerous!
Parashurama: Fear not. I am merely carrying out my duty.
Lyria: Don't lose to the whispers inside of you, Parashurama. Follow your own feelings!
Parashurama: Yes... Thank you.
His conviction renewed, Parashurama takes a deep breath and slowly approaches the creature.
Parashurama's Mother: ...!
What're you doing? Don't come here... Stop!
Parashurama: ...!
Parashurama: If I am completely honest, I do not yet have the answer. But if my mother felt resentment toward me and fell to evil as a result...
Parashurama: You are not the evil I need to destroy. Whatever sins you have committed, I am what caused them.
Parashurama: Rrg!
Parashurama: I understand your sadness and your anger. Still, I do not regret the choice I made that day.
Parashurama: The asura's portal was already open. If no one defeated the king, the entirety of the skies would have been swallowed by asura.
Parashurama: But I was naive at the time. As a result, I brought forth a curse, leaving a source of evil for future generations. That is the truth.
Parashurama: Knowing that, I made my choice to atone for my sins. I cast my mortal life aside and decided to walk a path of eternal penance.
Parashurama: If your descent into evil was a consequence of my actions, then it is a burden I must carry.
Bestrewn with wounds from the endless onslaught of monsters, Parashurama reaches out and gently places a hand on the creature.
Parashurama: Mother, you needn't blame yourself. I will carry the burden of your sins.
Parashurama's Mother: ...!
Parashurama: I was led to this place so that I could grant you salvation. That was Mahadeva's will all along.
Parashurama: You have suffered in regret long enough. In place of my master, I shall absolve you.
A flame rises from Parashurama's palm to envelop the creature.
Parashurama's Mother: This flame... Curses, it's the divine protection of Mahadeva!
Parashurama: The evil I must destroy is not the people. It is the absurdity that deceives their hearts and robs them of their lives!
Parashurama's Mother: Impossible! Salvation? You can't save anyone! Nothing will change, even if you destroy me!
Parashurama: I will not repeat the same mistake. I know what I must truly protect... and the evil I must destroy!
Parashurama's Mother: The abhorrent child of blessing... How dare an ordinary mortal like you do this!
Parashurama's Mother: Gaaah!
With a ghastly cry, the monster's body is enveloped in a pillar of fire, and the surrounding area transforms into a sea of red flames.
Finally, when the flames die out and everything has been burnt to ash...
Parashurama: Is that...
Parashurama notices something glittering in the mountain of ash. He picks it up and realizes it is the very hairpin his mother used to wear.
Just then, he senses the arrival of a familiar presence and raises his head.
Shiva: Well done. You have successfully overcome the trial and found the answer on your own.
Parashurama: Ah... Thank you.
Shiva: (Captain). We have put you through much trouble.
Vyrn: That's okay... Not that we did much though.
After looking at the crew briefly, Shiva shifts his eyes back to his disciple.
Shiva: Parashurama. Now that you have conquered the challenge and found the answer to my question, what is it that you desire?
Parashurama: If I may, Mahadeva... as your adherent, I beseech you.
Parashurama: Grant salvation to all the souls in this land. Please, have mercy on those who fell victim to the asura against their will.
Shiva: Then pray, my devout adherent.
Shiva: Your prayer shall become the light that guides the wandering souls to be reborn.
When Parashurama follows his master's instructions and begins to pray, Shiva holds his hand above him as embers manifest.
Shiva sends the embers into the air. Fragments of light gather from all around, soaring into the sky as if guided by the embers.
Lyria: It's beautiful...
Parashurama's Mother: ...
I'm sorry.
Parashurama: Mother?
At the sound of a gentle voice, Parashurama opens his eyes and sees that the hairpin in his hand is glowing faintly.
Parashurama's Mother: He and my sons not only had their lives taken away... They had their dignity trampled before suffering a tragic death. When I saw that...
Parashurama's Mother: I couldn't take it anymore. I knew you did no wrong, and yet, I ended up believing the king's false accusation.
Parashurama's Mother: I'm sorry, Parashurama. I'm sorry I've been nothing but a weak and foolish mother.
Parashurama: Your regret, grief, hatred... They have been consumed by the fire together with the asura, never to exist again.
Parashurama: There is nothing to tie you down anymore. May you be reborn and find eternal peace.
Without another word, the hairpin flashes brightly for a moment and begins to change shape.
When the light fades, in place of the hairpin is a single bow.
Parashurama: This bow... Vijaya! How?
Shiva: The hairpin earlier was a fragment of the broken Vijaya. Through your prayers and your mother's thoughts, it was able to repair its shape.
Parashurama: Mother's thoughts...
Parashurama feels a surge of emotions as he grasps the bow tightly. His vision blurs, and he collapses onto the ground.
Vyrn: Whoa! You okay, mister?
Parashurama: What... is this feeling? My body and my mind feel... heavy...
His voice is a whisper as he finds himself sinking into a deep slumber.

Karma: Scene 4

Once the souls have been sent off, Parashurama wakes up in a room on the Grandcypher. (Captain) comes in to take a look, and Parashurama confesses that despite what happened to his mother, he feels nothing inside. But when (Captain) tells him that it's okay to cry, Parashurama finds himself recalling the long-lost emotions in his heart and begins to quietly mourn for his mother.

Parashurama's Mother: Why did I wish for you to name my child... you ask?
Shiva: Yes. A name is the first blessing granted equally to all things born into these skies.
Shiva: Normally, it is something you, as the parent, should give to your son. Until now, no one has asked me to name their child.
Shiva: And so, it piqued my interest. Why did you not give a name to your youngest upon birth?
Parashurama's Mother: ...
In the midst of the dangers of the asura, my child was only able to safely come into these skies thanks to your protection.
Parashurama's Mother: My husband told me... that this child, even before he was born, carried a unique destiny.
Parashurama's Mother: This destiny will give my son much trial and suffering. As ordinary people, we have no way to protect him from his destiny.
Parashurama's Mother: That is why I wanted to give him a name that will have your protection, for him to carry throughout his entire life.
Parashurama's Mother: If ever he loses control among the many tribulations, may he return to himself when his name is called.
Shiva: I see. This is yet another form of a parent's care for their child's future.
Parashurama's Mother: Yes. I may be powerless as an ordinary mortal, but I can at least call my child's name.
Parashurama's Mother: I pray that when he grows up, he will be blessed with friends who call him by his name, and walk with many by his side.
Parashurama's Mother: Please, Mahadeva. As one who gave him his name, I ask that you will watch over my son.
Parashurama: Was I... dreaming?
Parashurama slowly returns to consciousness and finds himself staring at an unfamiliar ceiling.
He sits up to look around the room when a knock sounds. The door opens to reveal (Captain) peeking in.
Parashurama: (Captain)... Apologies for all the trouble.
He lowers his gaze, silently staring into space like an empty shell.
(Captain) sits on the edge of his bed and asks if he is all right.
Parashurama: Huh? Ah... My wounds have healed and I feel no pain. Sturdiness is one of my few strengths.
  1. Don't dodge the question.
  2. You don't look okay.

Choose: Don't dodge the question.
Parashurama: I am not dodging anything. See? There's not a scratch on my body.

Choose: You don't look okay.
Parashurama: No? I do feel some fatigue, but otherwise, nothing else is out of place.

Unsatisfied with his answer, (Captain) stares hard at Parashurama.
Feeling somewhat awkward, Parashurama lets his gaze wander until he finally sighs in surrender.
Parashurama: Sorry for evading your question. I understand what you are trying to say.
Parashurama: But if I am completely honest, I don't know. It is just like when I saw my hometown from bygone days—I feel nothing inside.
He hangs his head and gazes at his own outstretched hands.
Parashurama: Heartless, aren't I? I just sent off my own mother, albeit only her soul.
Parashurama: (Captain). Tell me, what sort of emotions would be appropriate in times like these?
Parashurama: Should I feel sad from our separation? Relief for having attended her last moments? Hatred for what tied my mother down? Or anger at my past self for not protecting her?
Parashurama: Before, I never wondered what emotions should be felt in certain moments. After all, emotions are something that fills the heart unconsciously.
Parashurama: But now... I don't know anymore. What did I feel and think, back when I was an ordinary person?
Without warning, (Captain) stands up. And before he can react, Parashurama finds his face clamped between the captain's hands.
Parashurama: (Captain)? What are you...
  1. It's written all over your face.

Choose: It's written all over your face.
Parashurama: My face?
(Captain): You can cry. No one will blame you.
Parashurama: Even so, I've long forgotten how to cr—
As he whispers awkwardly, he feels something warm sliding down his cheeks.
Parashurama: Huh?
Confused, Parashurama blinks. What had blurred his vision overflows, spilling down his face and onto the palm of his hands.
When finally he realizes that they are his own tears, his breath catches as infinite emotions fill his heart.
Parashurama: Haha... How long has it been since I've seen my own tears?
Parashurama: Anger, hatred, sorrow, regret, relief, loneliness... These are all valid feelings that together fill my heart.
Parashurama: I remember now... The reason people shed their tears, and the names of the feelings inside me.
Parashurama: It's strange... Did my tears and my heart always feel this heavy?
Parashurama bends over, holding back his sobs.
Worried, (Captain) leans in when a sudden movement stops the captain.
Parashurama: Sorry, (Captain). Just for a while... Lend me your shoulder, just for a little while.
When Parashurama puts his head on the captain's shoulder, (Captain) hesitates before reaching out to stroke his back, like a parent would a child.
The sound of quiet weeping fills the gentle silence.
Shiva: ...
In the middle of the night, Shiva appears and looks at the two figures huddled together in slumber.
Shiva: Exhausting himself from weeping... He is no different from an infant.
Nagaraja: Squeak...
Shiva: Yes... The fact he can shed tears is proof that he is still a child of man.
Shiva: Primal beasts do not shed tears. They were not created with the function to do so.
Shiva: But that is not all. Shedding tears is something only one possessing a heart is capable of.
Nagaraja: ...?
Shiva: When Parashurama was still but an ordinary mortal, I once asked him...
Shiva: Parashurama. Why do people shed tears?
Parashurama: Huh? Why, you ask?
Shiva: I am curious, as it is something far removed from myself. Why are children of men equipped with the facility to cry?
Shiva: Unlike consumption, sleep, and excretion, it is not a function necessary to maintain one's life.
Parashurama: Er... I'm afraid I do not know much of the technical details, as I am not a scholar...
Shiva: Your opinion is fine. I would like to hear your thoughts on the matter.
Parashurama: Hmm... If I must answer, I believe it's something that assists people's growth.
Shiva: Oh?
Parashurama: Sorrow, suffering, anger, regret. Joy, longing, loneliness...
Parashurama: When all of these emotions become too much for the heart to contain, tears overflow and cleanse the heart.
Parashurama: In other words, tears are proof that the heart is alive. People shed tears to heal their wounds, and to pick themselves up when they fall.
Parashurama: That is what my father said, in any case.
Parashurama: Because I often cried when I was little, my older brothers would tease me about it, after which my father would comfort me like so.
Shiva: Hm. Valuable teachings indeed.
Shiva: No matter how much one resembles a mortal in appearance, thought, or even emotion...
Shiva: All of it is made according to the will of the creator.
Shiva: The function to shed tears was determined unnecessary and removed. That is the difference between primal and mortal... between a creation and a life.
Shiva: Therefore, shedding tears is a conduct allowed only to the children of men, much like the miracle of giving birth to another life.
Nagaraja: Squeak, squeak...
Just then, Shiva feels a slight shift in the air. He lets out a small breath, resigned.
Shiva: You're watching, are you not? Vishnu.
In response, Parashurama's body is enveloped in a soft light.
Shiva: As we have agreed not to interfere with one another, it matters not to me what you choose to do. However...
Shiva: My disciple has shown us his nature. If you should interfere any further, then even I cannot stay silent.
Shiva: This applies not only to Parashurama, but to (Captain) as well. They are both my adherents.
Shiva: Relay this message to him—that I shall not forgive anyone who dares to lay a finger on my adherents.
Shiva's voice is tinged with a quiet rage. The faint light flickers a few times before turning into tiny particles that leave Parashurama's body and vanish into the air.
Shiva: ...
When Vishnu's presence finally fades, Shiva heaves a sigh and turns back to his adherents, still in peaceful slumber.
Shiva: Parashurama... Even if you cast aside your mortality, your soul and your mind are still that of a mortal's.
Shiva: As long as you remain in that state, there will be much suffering. And yet, do not forget... that you are never alone.
Shiva: Only those who understand the same pain can save the hearts of others. You must be that person, so that you can come close and walk alongside those in need.
Shiva: Continue to save the children of man—as many as you can until your final moment.
Shiva: That is your duty and the hope I entrust to you... as my disciple.
Shiva gazes at his slumbering adherents with a profound affection in his eyes.
Listening to the rhythm of their soft breathing, Shiva continues to watch over them until the ship wakes to a new day.
