The Animals' Underling[edit source]
While (Captain) and the crew are visiting a mountain in a secluded region, they meet Pavidus, a cowardly Draph who is being ordered around by birds. Pavidus, who was raised by the birds, treats them like royalty and serves them loyally. He listens to the party’s story. Pavidus joins the crew in order to get stronger, and his many animal friends come to see him off. However, they are so worried about him that they end up joining the crew of the Grandcypher as well, and together they leave on the adventure!
One day, when (Captain) and the crew were taking a day off, they heard a tale of an unexplored mountain in a secluded region.
Itching to go adventuring, (Captain) and Vyrn decided to use their day off to explore the mountain…
Rackam: Really? You wanna go and "explore"? What are you, five?
Rackam: Heh. Well I catch your drift. Adventuring's fun, after all!
Vyrn: What's up, Lyria?
Lyria: Erm… I thought I heard a voice coming from somewhere…
Vyrn: What? They said this place was unexplored!
There certainly was a voice coming from the nearby mountain. The curious crew went towards the sound…
They went further up the mountain, and emerged into a verdant clearing, where a strange sight greeted them…
Chick: Ca-caw! (Hey, bird-brain! Hurry up! We're getting hungry over here!
Pavidus: I'm sorry, sir! I'm going as fast as I can! Please don't peck me!
Vyrn: Huh, what's going on? Is he talking to that bird?
Lyria: Wow! He can talk to birds? How amazing is that!
Rackam: Well, it looks more like he's being pushed around by the bird, not having a conversation with it…
Chick: Caw! (Hey Pavi! Someone's coming!)
The man being prodded by the bird looked over his shoulder towards the area where the crew were hiding.
Pavidus: P-people? People with w-w-weapons!
The surprised man took out a dagger and brandished it at the party.
Pavidus: Eeeeeeeeee! D-d-don't come any closer! G-g-go awaaaaay!
The man, on the verge of tears, yelled out, and suddenly several birds flew out around him.
The trees began to shake, and the cries of animals echoed all over the mountain.
Vyrn: Woah! What's going on? What's that guy doing?
Rackam: Whoa there! Hold on a sec! Calm down! We're not here to hurt you!
Bird: Ca-cawww! (What do you want? We don't trust you!)
Rackam: Sigh… Alright…
Rackam signaled, and (Captain) and the crew dropped their weapons.
Rackam: See! I told you, we're not here to hurt you! So call off that animal army!
Pavidus: B-but you're…
Bird: Ca-caw… (He seems to be telling the truth… Maybe we can trust him, Pavi.)
Pavidus: O-okay. Understood, sir.
The man sheathed his dagger. The animal sounds faded from the mountain, and the birds calmed down.
Pavidus: Are you guys bad people?
Rackam: No. We're just passing through.
Pavidus: Sorry about that… I get nervous around weapons…
Rackam: Ah, well… Sorry for sneaking up on you like that.
Vyrn: More importantly, Hood Dude, that was crazy! You can command all the animals!
Pavidus: Oh no, that's not what happened! I could never order my superiors around… I'm the one taking the orders!
Chick: Ca-caw! (Yes. He's like a servant, a henchman and a disciple all rolled into one!)
Vyrn: What? What's the bird saying? Hood Dude, tell us what he's saying!
Chick: Ca-ca-caw! (Oi, Pavi, what happened to the grub? If you're gonna chat, get the food too!)
Pavidus: Y-yessir! Guys… Is it okay if I prepare food while we talk?
Rackam: Sure, we can help you too, if you like. I feel bad just sitting here talking while you're doing all that work…
Pavidus: Really? Thank you!
The crew listened to him talk as they gathered fruit.
The man, whose name was Pavidus, had lived in the forest ever since he was a child. He had been raised by the animals there.
As they continued gathering food, Pavidus explained how he felt that the animals were his teachers and his adoptive parents.
Lyria: I see… The birds and the other animals are very important to you, Pavidus.
Vyrn: Don't you think the animals are a tiny bit strict to you, Pavidus?
Pavidus: No, not at all!
Pavidus: I'm always causing trouble for them, and I just want to repay them for their kindness, and for everything they've done for me.
Lyria: You've… caused trouble?
Pavidus: I'm a coward, and a weakling… When people come into the mountains, or when beasts attack…
Pavidus: I always get scared, and the animals have to come in and help me…
Pavidus: They're nice to me, really. So I don't want to cause them any trouble anymore.
Pavidus: Well, that's all there is to know about me! What about you guys? Where have you come from?
Pavidus: We hardly ever get anyone coming to these mountains from outside, so I'm interested to hear more about you!
Lyria: Oh, okay! We'll tell you all about ourselves! Right, (Captain)?
The crew talked about their journeys up to this point, and explained the goal of their journey to Pavidus.
Pavidus: Wow! You guys are amazing!
Pavidus: If I were to go on a journey like you, do you think I'd be able to become stronger… and more brave?
Vyrn: Hood Dude… You wanna get stronger?
Pavidus: Yes… If I get stronger, I won't be a burden on the animals, and I'll be able to live happily!
Lyria: In that case, how about coming with us on our journey?
Pavidus: B-but… Erm…
Pavidus: I've got to stay here and look after all the animals!
Suddenly, the birds spread their wings and flew away from the clearing.
Lyria: Ah! What happened? What are the birds doing?
Pavidus: I-I don't know… They didn't say anything…
Everyone thought it was strange that the birds had flown away so suddenly, but they continued gathering the fruit.
When they had finished gathering, Pavidus took them to the place where he lived, further into the mountains.
When they got there, they found that Pavidus' birds had packed a suitcase and left it outside of the house!
Pavidus: Wh… What? What's going on! Are you trying to bully me again?
A bird landed on Pavidus' shoulder as he ranted, and pecked him on the cheek.
Bird: Ca-caw! (Saying you have to take care of us…)
Bird: Caw caw ca-caw! (What kind of excuse is that! Stop being such a darned wuss!)
Vyrn: What in the blazes is going on with those two?
Lyria: I have no idea. But I feel like they're having a really important conversation.
Bird: Cawww! (We'll be fine without your help, you ridiculous ape!)
Pavidus: R… really?
Bird: Ca-caw! (So go off with them! You really want to go, right?)
Pavidus: Is that really OK with you?
While Pavidus was talking to the bird, the trees nearby began to shake, and a trampling sound approached them.
Everyone looked towards the sound, and a giant wild boar emerged from the woods!
Pavidus: Mr. Boar! You came to see me too!
Vyrn: Woah! You know this boar, too?
Boar: Oink! (Looks like it's time for you to strike out on your own.)
The boar grunted and brought Pavidus back over to the crew.
Boar: Oink… Oink oink. (You may be a cowardly helper, but we appreciate you.)
Bird: Squee! (We're counting on you. Don't let us down!)
Pavidus: …Thank you, everyone!
Rackam: So… I think this means that…
Pavidus: They said… They said to go, and that they were counting on me!
Vyrn: I see. Heehee! They don't just boss you around, they care about you too!
Vyrn: Well, we'll welcome you in with open arms! Right, (Captain)?
Pavidus: Thank you so much!
Pavidus: Animals! I'm going now, but I promise I'll be back! I'm going to get stronger, then return to help!
Boar: Oink. (Yes. Go! Don't look back, and return when you're ready!)
Boar: Squee! (Good luck on your journey, Pavidus!)
Pavidus: Thank you!
Pavidus nodded firmly, took his luggage, and moved off down the mountain with the crew.
When they arrived back at the Grandcypher…
Bird: Caw! (Comfortable place you've got here!)
The animals were all around the ship, relaxing on the deck.
Pavidus: W-what are you all doing? I thought you were…
Boar: Oink. (Hehe… Well, we were worried about you, Pavidus!)
Rackam: Well, I guess this means that the animals are along for the ride too!
Pavidus: Don't worry, animals! I'll still be taking care of you!
Rackam: Sheesh… What should we do?
Choose: The more, the merrier, right?
- The more, the merrier, right?
- This is a bit too much…
Rackam: Okay… Well, the captain's word is law on board! Roger that, Captain (Captain)!
Pavidus: Really? Thank you!Choose: This is a bit too much…
Boar: Oink-oink! (It's hard to ask this of you, but I hope you'll reconsider.)
Boar: Squeeeeee! (If we leave this lump on his own, we're worried about his safety.)
Pavidus: (Captain)! I beg you! Please let them come!
(Captain) was won over by the passionate pleas of Pavidus and the animals, and agreed to let them come.Continue 1
Rackam: Alright then, I guess they can all come… But make sure you clean up after this crazy menagerie!
Pavidus: I promise I will! Thank you so much, everyone!
Bird: Caw! (Thanks for letting us on board!)
And so, the weak-willed Pavidus and his happy assortment of animals joined the crew.
The Grandcypher became a much livelier place, thanks to the presence of many birds, and, of course, a large boar.
Pavidus notices that his "superiors", the animals, are out of sorts. He inquires after the cause and discovers that this is due to the changing environment. Accepting Pavidus's request, the crew plot a course to temporarily return to the mountain where Pavidus and the animals used to live.
One day, not long after Pavidus had joined the crew…
Pavidus's "superiors" were not as energetic as usual.
Lyria: Hmmm… What's wrong with them do you think?
Pavidus: Birds! What's wrong? Why are you not your usual selves?
Pavidus: You don't say… the environment has suddenly changed?
Bird: Caw! (Stop your blabbering! That's not what we meant!)
Chick: Ca- caw (we can thrive no matter where we are!)
Pavidus: You mustn't tell lies to me, birds! I am your loyal servant charged with your protection!
Pavidus: If you, my masters, are suffering, I can not turn a blind eye!
Boar: Oink oink… (Huh? It's just like we said)
Boar: Oink oink oink… (Certainly we are not in a good way at the moment. It's like you just said, the shift in our environment is to blame).
Pavidus: As I thought… Well, for the moment let's return to the mountain…
Bird: Caw (Yes, that might lift our spirits a little…)
Pavidus: I see…
Vyrn: Erm? What were you guys saying?
Pavidus: We were saying that my masters' spirits may be restored if we return to our homeland mountains awhile.
Pavidus: So I have a request! Would we be able to return, temporarily to the mountain where I was living?
Pavidus: I want to help my masters!
Chick: Caw caw! (Thanks Pavi!)
Rackam: Well, I guess it can't be helped… Plot a course for Pavidus's mountain!
Pavidus: Thank you! My masters, please endure these conditions for just a while longer.
Thus, the crew set a course for the mountain where Pavidus used to live.
Save My Betters!: Scene 2[edit source]
Bandits have taken up residence in Pavidus's mountain home. Angered at the bandits' behavior, the birds attack, but they are driven back. Now it is Pavidus's turn to be angry, and, summoning his last reserve of energy, launches an all or nothing attack on the bandits. The bandits are about to make good their escape, when they are surrounded by a flock of furious beasts. The crew ready their weapons and prepare to teach the desperate bandits a lesson.
The crew arrived back at the mountain. But Pavidus and his "superiors", the animals, wore grim expressions on their faces.
Pavidus: The forest… This silence, it's… deafening.
Lyria: What does it mean?
Chick: Ca- caw! (Wha- what's happened? There's something very peculiar here…)
Pavidus: There is no bird song. This does not bode well… (Captain), we should proceed with caution.
Advancing cautiously across the mountain, the crew eventually reached Pavidus's house…
…Only to discover a brigade of bandits had taken up residence there.
Bandit: Oi! Look here you horrible lot! This here's our hideout now, understand?
Chick: Ca- Caw! (Oh yeah? That's what you think! This is our nest!)
Pavidus: That's right! This house is ours! Ours I tell you!
Bandit: Ha! Didn't you hear? It's not good to leave a house like this vacant, hehehe.
Pavidus: And my superiors, the birds! What have you done with my superiors!
Bandit: Huh? "Superiors?"
Rackam: So rude… Why can we not hear the chatter of the animals and birds that once lived here?
Bandit: Oh, them… They pecked and bit us ferociously, so we drove them away.
Bandit: Huh…. Those guys put up quite the fight. We had to cook a few up for dinner!
Lyria: How could you… You're evil…
Pavidus: You won't get away with this! As long as there's a breath left in my body!
Pavidus: I- I shall be the one driving you away!
Bandit: Yeah? You and what army? You knock-kneed weakling!
Pavidus: Why you… you…
Bandit: We'd like to see you try! Bring it on!
Bird: KA - CAW! (Stand firm Pavi! We'll lead the attack!)
Rising from behind Pavidus, the birds spread their wings and swooped down on the bandits.
Bandit: Curses! Wha- what's with these birds!
The birds attacked the bandits but gradually their assault was repelled.
Bird: Caw caw! (Darn it! They're too strong for us…)
Bandit: Ha! Is that all you've got?
Rackam: All right you lot, that's enough fun and games!
Rackam turned his muzzle on the bandits.
Just then however, another group of bandits appeared and surrounded Rackam and (Captain).
Bandit: Hey! We saw them first, they're our problem.
Rackam: Why you…
Bandit: You riffraff! Are you threatening us?
Bird: Caw caw!
Letting out a great cry, Pavidus lunged into the crowd of bandits, recklessly swinging his sword in all directions.
Bandit: Argh! You swine! Is this berserker really that weakling from before! Retreat!
Boar: Oink oink! (We should have done this ages ago!)
Bandit: Eek! A boar? It's huuuge!
Pavidus: Great Master Boar!
Boar: Oink oink oink! (Not bad Pavi! You really pulled out the stops there…)
Boar: Oink oink oink! (We mustn't tire just yet! Hold the line, you lot!)
The boar let out an bellowing roar, and a veritable deluge of birds and beasts came surging out of the forest.
Bandit: Eeeeek! Heavens above! Men, take aim! We can do this!
Boar: Oink oink oink! (All right, now we've beefed up our numbers… let's see if we can turn this around…)
The boar looked at (Captain) and let out an enormous snort.
Rackam: Hehe, well I think we understood what that meant. Let's give these dunderheads a beating they won't forget, (Captain)!
Save My Betters!: Scene 3[edit source]
Pavidus and the crew finish driving out the bandits. His "superiors", the birds and other animals, praise him for this deed. Pavidus is glad to receive this commendation, but rather than dwelling on his triumph, the animals immediately order him to gather food. The sight of Pavidus hurrying off to gather supplies would stay with (Captain) for quite some time.
Together with their animal army, (Captain) and the crew had beaten the bandits and driven them off the mountain.
Bird: Caw caw! (And don't come back, you nincompoops!)
Pavidus: M- my masters, are you injured?
Bird: Caw… (Our feathers are a little crumpled, but we're all right.)
Pavidus: Oh, that's a relief…
Vyrn: Haha, on top of that, you really gave it to them, Pavidus!
Rackam: Yeah, you were totally mowing them down… You're surprisingly strong, no?
Pavidus: Oh I wouldn't say that. If Great Master Boar hadn't come to my aid, I would surely have been beaten…
Pavidus: Thank you from the bottom of my heart… Great Master Boar… Birds… Once again you have saved me…
Pavidus bowed deeply to the boar. Just then, the animals swarmed around Pavidus, and started to peck and prod him.
Pavidus: Ouch! Ow ow!
Bird: Caw caw! (Stop taking such garbage! You also gave it your all!)
Bird: Caw, caw… (If you hadn't come back home, we would've been done for!)
Bird: Caw! (Thanks!)
Boar: Oink, oink! (You've gotten a lot stronger. You did yourself proud out there.)
Lyria: Ummm… what are you guys talking about? I don't speak bird, but you seem pleased, Pavidus.
Vyrn: Hehehe. I think they're singing his praises!
Chick: Cheep cheep! (Oy, how long are you gonna stand around grinning! This is where you belong! Bring us food!)
Pavidus: Yes, I'm on my way!
With a smile plastered across his face, Pavidus headed toward an area where lots of berries grew.
Lyria: Are you perchance going to gather food for the animals? Teehee, we'll come and help! Right, (Captain)?
(Captain) nodded and followed Pavidus.
The sight of Pavidus pressing ahead to gather berries would stay with (Captain) for a long time.
Pressed on by his elders who are infatuated with Jasmine, Pavidus helps Jasmine pick out herbs. As the elders discuss the finer points of Jasmine, it quickly breaks out into a fight when her own animals join the discussion. Pavidus intervenes and Jasmine turns furious at the petty squabble. The two return first to the Grandcypher leaving the animals behind.
One day, Jasmine visits the forest in her spare time to collect herbs.
For some reason, the large and timid Pavidus is by her side.
Pavidus: Hey Jasmine, do you think we can use these herbs too?
Jasmine: Yes, they're perfect! Thank you so much for your help!
Pavidus: Ahaha, don't mention it...
Pavidus gives an embarrassed smile as he looks down at the bird observing Jasmine.
Bird: Kaww... (Jasmine, you're looking lovely as ever...)
It turns out Pavidus is not helping Jasmine out of pure altruism.
The elder animals wanted to observe Jasmine and made Pavidus come along in order to do so.
To put it simply, Pavidus's elders are infatuated with Jasmine.
Birdie: Chirp! (I can't get a good look, it's too bright. But she looks like a goddess from what I can see!)
As Pavidus's elders remain entranced, Jasmine's animals come into the fold.
Hare: (Heheh, isn't our princess just splendid?)
Birdie: Chirp...? (Princess? Are you talking about Jasmine?)
Bird: Kaww! (Why not? She's cute so she fits the bill if you ask me!)
Hare: ... (There's more to it than that! Our princess is kind and gentle!)
Birdie: Chiiirp! (Yeah, I got it... I wonder if she'll be a good match!)
Deer: ...! (Hmm, a match for what?)
Birdie: Chirp chirp! (A match for me, as in a companion who'll preen my feathers every day.)
The squawking birdie begins to feel the anger of Jasmine's animals.
Birdie: Caw... (Gah, what is it?)
Hare: ...! (How dare you even think of taking our princess!)
Hare: ...! (Know your place, dodo!)
Birdie: Kaww! (Who do you think you're talkin to, bucky!)
Bird: Skrawk! (Simmer down you two! Jasmine belongs to no one!)
Bird: Skraaaaawk! (Don't get carried away just because Jasmine is close by!)
The situation becomes volatile as the animals squabble.
Pavidus: Birdie, please calm down. Fighting solves nothing...
Birdie: Kaww! (Quiet you!)
The frightened Pavidus looks to Jasmine for help.
Jasmine: Hahaha, it looks like everyone's having so much fun.
Pavidus: Can you understand the conversation they're having?
Jasmine: But of course! They're getting heated up over their favorite acorn recipes!
Pavidus: Umm... (Oh no, I don't think she hears their voices...)
Pavidus: (But I can't possibly tell her that they're fighting over her.)
Pavidus: Ehehe... Yeah, they must really love acorns...
Bird: Kakaw! (Let me be clear, Pavi! This is no acorn business!)
Pavidus: Aagh! I-I'm so sorry. I know, but...
Bird: Kaww... (Anyhow, Jasmine belongs to no one!)
Bird: Squaawwk! (At least not until I confess my love for her!)
Hare: ...! (What!)
With herbs in beak, the bird runs off to Jasmine but is blocked halfway there by the deer.
Deer: ... (I can't let that happen. You'll have to get past me first.)
The deer looks down at the bird menacingly with its giant antlers.
Boar: Snort... (Yo, did you just point those antlers at my buddy here?)
Boar: Snort! (You better be ready for some hurtin'!)
The boar moves in front of the bird as if to protect it, and kicks off the ground, getting ready to charge.
Deer: ...! (Looks like it'll ram me with its head. Let's see who has the stronger headbutt!)
Pavidus: Stop it! Please stop it everyone!
Pavidus's frail screams fail to reach the boar and the deer as they charge at each other.
Pavidus gets right in between them to break up the fight.
Boar: Snort! (Pavi!)
Deer: ... (Oh no, what have I done? Pavidus...)
Pavidus: Nghh, why... must we fight? We all like her.
Pavidus: Fighting is never the answer. If we share the same passion for something, that's all the more the reason to get along.
Birdie: Kaww... (Pavi...)
Hare: ... (Pavidus is right. Forgive me.)
Bird: Chirp... (Pavidus has a point. I'm so sorry everyone.)
As the animals begin reconciling their differences, an angry Jasmine comes over.
Jasmine: Cut that out right now! Can't you animals discuss the best acorn recipe in peace?
Jasmine: Oh gosh, I can't believe you hurt Pavidus over this!
Deer: ... (We're so sorry, Princess. And about the acorns...)
Jasmine: Are you OK, Pavidus? I'll treat your wounds right away!
Jasmine: Ugh, unbelievable! I hate naughty animals more than anything else!
Hare: ! (No, please don't say that!)
Jasmine: Humph, I baked all these acorn cookies for naught!
Jasmine: Now Pavidus and I are going to keep them all to ourselves!
Birdie: Squaawwwk! (Nooo, please!)
Jasmine: C'mon, Pavidus! Let's get back to the Grandcypher!
Pavidus: Well... okay... (I'm sorry, everyone. Please don't hold a grudge against me.)
Pavidus follows the disgruntled Jasmine toward the ship.
Deer: ...! (Wait, Princess!)
Bird: Kaww... (This isn't over yet, Pavi! Just you wait!)
The animals, feeling vengeful yet guilty, desperately chase after the two.
