A Fool's Act
(Captain), Vyrn, and Lyria spot an injured girl on the ground while looking for Baihu. They down the cardinal beast and find a pendant lying where it had been standing. The girl, introducing herself as Shushuku, claims to have seen the pendant before and invites the crew over to her home.
(Captain), Vyrn, and Lyria, having accepted a request to investigate and quell Baihu, find themselves at the center of Western Solitary.
Lyria: I can sense Baihu from that way! But something's off... It's acting all crazy...
Lyria: Eek! Something's definitely wrong! It's like the island itself is in pain...
Vyrn: Look! Someone's passed out over there!
???: ...
The three quickly rush over to help. They find a girl in critical condition, struggling to breathe and covered in wounds.
Vyrn: This lady's in real bad shape! Maybe Baihu went berserk and attacked her...
???: I-I need... water...
Lyria: O-of course! You can have some of mine!
Lyria: Here, drink as much as you want!
???: Actually... I'd rather have some milk instead... A pitcher of fresh milk... from the Ox Temple... would be nice...
Vyrn: Ya must be pretty okay if that's what you're askin' for! Like we'd have that here!
???: But... I need that milk... Urk...
Lyria: Is there a particular reason why you can't have anything else?
???: Without it, I'll end up disappointed... and it'll ruin the rest of my day...
Vyrn: That's it? Sounds like a you problem!
???: You fool... Quenching your thirst with a drink of your choice is one of life's greatest... Hrk...
Choose: It's water or nothing. Drink up.
???: Hmph...
Water flask in hand, (Captain) basically forces its contents down the girl's throat.
???: Phew! Now that hits the spot! I feel alive again!
???: Nothing better than a refreshing swig of cool water! Milk? Never heard of it!
Vyrn: Huh? But ya specifically asked for milk... You totally wanted it!
???: You're imagining things!
Vyrn: Whatever...
Lyria: A-anyway... You're hurt all over! Let me help you!
???: Help me? But I feel perfectly fine!
???: See? Fit as a fiddle!
Vyrn: You're bleedin' everywhere! Quit movin' already—we get it!
Suddenly, Baihu appears before the party and lets out a low growl. The enraged tiger glares at them head-on.
Baihu: ...
Vyrn: Whoa, talk about comin' outta nowhere... What's up with Baihu anyway? Was it really always this wild?
???: Look! A bunny!
Wind Rabbit: ...!
???: It's gonna get crushed! I'll save you!
Vyrn: Hold up, lady! You're gonna get hurt!
Baihu: ...
???: I-I know! But still... I have to help!
???: I mean, look at the poor little thing! It's quivering with fear! I can't just sit around and watch it die!
The girl holds the small creature to her chest and squeezes her eyes shut, waiting for the worst to come. (Captain), in the meanwhile, springs to action.
Vyrn: Yikes, that was close! Nice one, (Captain)!
???: Huh? You took it down on your own?
Astonished, the girl sits with her mouth agape. The creature, no longer sensing any danger, jumps out of her arms and hops away.
???: Impossible... It takes, uh... over a century of training to beat that thing!
???: Wait, does that mean...
???: You're actually over a hundred years old?
Choose: A sprightly 115 years young!
???: Makes sense! No wonder you're so strong!
Vyrn: Cut it out. You're not a primal, y'know!
???: Then how come you beat it so easily?
Choose: As if!
???: What? Don't tell me you're really as young as you look!
???: Then how come you beat it so easily?

???: It all started this morning...

???: Why is it that money disappears when you spend it?
Vyrn: The money you spent is gone. Shocker.
???: Don't interrupt me! I was about to get to the important part!
???: Anyway... Just then, I came up with a good idea!
???: I know! I should find an island where you can eat and have fun without any money!
Vyrn: And I think you need to be more realistic...
???: That's when I found some money under my bed! After that, I hitched a ride on a nearby airship!
???: I never imagined what would happen next though...
???: Wow, the wind feels amazing! Ah, if only all ships were free to ride!
Passenger: Hey, look at that weird island beneath us! It's headed our way!
Crew Member: That must be the island that appears from the Grim Basin every once in a while. We'll alter the ship's course to avoid any danger!
???: Hm? This island looks familiar...
???: Oh, I know! I remember seeing it in my travel guide. If I recall correctly, it has some kind of hidden hot spring on it somewhere!
???: I hear bathing in its waters really shakes you to your core—not to mention the island's famous stimulative hot springs manju!
???: All right, this is my stop! Let me off here!
Crew Member: I'm sorry, ma'am, but we simply cannot drop you off here. This island's far too dangerous! We're in the middle of changing the ship's course, so please remain seated!
???: No, I'm getting off here! I have to!
???: The island's hot springs are calling me!
Crew Member: Ma'am? M-ma'aaam!
Lyria: Hold on, you jumped from the airship?
???: Yep... And there isn't a single hot spring to show for it...
???: The fall really did a number on my body with how much I was bouncing around...
Vyrn: How are ya even alive? And here I was thinkin' Baihu attacked ya or something!
???: Baihu's got nothing to do with these wounds! They're all from the fall!
Lyria: Now that you mention it, you've got way more bruises than cuts...
???: You guys really saved my skin! Thanks a bunch!
Vyrn: You're welcome, I guess... Wait a sec...
Vyrn notices a beautiful pendant on the ground where Baihu stood moments earlier.
Lyria: What's this? I think I feel a tiny bit of Baihu's power coming from it...
???: Hm... I feel like I've seen something similar before...
Vyrn: Are ya sayin' you've got an idea what this is?
???: Oh, do you like it or something? Wearing it around might be a bit much though, don't you think?
Lyria: That's not it... We're actually investigating both Baihu and this island, so any sort of information would be great.
???: That's all you needed to say! Let's see...
???: Ah, darn it... I can't remember anything.
Vyrn: Hey! Don't get our hopes up over nothing!
???: Hm... I could've sworn I'd seen it back at home...
Shushuku: Oh, yeah! As thanks for helping me out, I, Shushuku, will guide you back to my home! Maybe we'll find some hints there!
Lyria: Thank you! So your name is Shushuku, is that right?
Shushuku: Yep, that's me! How about you guys? What are your names?
Vyrn and Lyria are the first to introduce themselves, followed by (Captain).
Shushuku: I couldn't think of a better name myself! It fits you perfectly!
Lyria: Come to think of it, something about you reminds me of Baihu... It's like you have a similar presence...
Shushuku: There you go again, imagining things!
Shushuku: Now then, why don't we all head back to my place and have a nice warm cup of tea?
Vyrn: Hey, this isn't what we signed up for...
The party then departs for Shushuku's residence in hopes of learning more about the pendant that had fallen from Baihu.
Home Slovenly Home
After discovering that Shushuku is drowning in debt, the crew arrives at an incredibly messy residence. As they clean, a book containing a picture of the pendant comes up. The party learns that it is Shushuku's duty to handle Baihu, but she claims not to care before nearly passing out from hunger.
The party arrives at Shushuku's home island in search of clues regarding the fallen pendant.
Lyria: The crew of the ship all seemed so relieved. I'm glad we were able to let them know you're okay!
Vyrn: Yeah. I can't believe ya actually jumped off the ship...
Shushuku: I thought there'd be a nice hot spring... Why couldn't I find it?
Vyrn: Ya probably just misremembered or something. Honestly, you should be happy you're even alive...
Shushuku: You fool! I wanted to take a dip in the legendary secret hot springs!
As (Captain) and the others make their way to Shushuku's place, a few villagers call out to her.
Villager 1: Hey, Shushuku. Ya gotta pay off your tab soon, got it?
Villager 2: Shushuku, my dear. You haven't forgotten about the money you borrowed, have you?
Shushuku: Don't worry, I remember! Even if I'm flat-out broke right now!
Villager 2: Sigh... I can't say I'm surprised. Have it ready next time, okay?
Vyrn: Sheesh, you're riddled with debt...
Shushuku: That's right, but—ah!
Shushuku suddenly halts in her tracks and admires a pair of earrings being displayed at the store in front of her.
Shushuku: These earrings are gorgeous... They remind me of a deep red sunset!
Shushuku: If I wore these, I'm sure I'd feel happy all day—which means I'm buying them!
Lyria: Huh? Didn't you just say you had no money?
Shushuku: You fool! If I don't get them now, someone else might snatch them up! What then?
Vyrn: Yeah, but how are ya supposed to buy 'em without any money?
Shushuku: Hrk...
Vyrn: Besides, what's wrong with the ones ya already got?
Lyria: The earrings you're wearing now look great on you!
Shushuku: They do, don't they? I really like these ones too!
Vyrn: All the more reason for you not to buy another pair.
Shushuku: How come? Am I not allowed to have multiple favorites?
Lyria: There is something nice about being surrounded by your favorite things!
Vyrn: I mean, I get it, but she's gotta stop throwin' her money around...
Shushuku: Wait, I have an idea! I can just pawn my sword!
The blade in Shushuku's hand gleams beneath the sun, its metallic body giving off a certain radiance.
Shushuku: This is an heirloom that's been passed down in my family for generations! I'm sure it'll fetch a pretty rupie!
Shushuku: Hehehe, I totally forgot I had this! Perhaps it is I who was the fool all along!
Vyrn: Ya know what's foolish? Sellin' off a family treasure, that's what!
Shushuku: But I have to get these earrings!
Lyria: Hold on, Shushuku! Calm down!
Shushuku: I want to feel happy! Let me get what I want!
Lyria: Ah, right! Weren't we on our way to your place? You gotta make us some tea! That sounds fun too, doesn't it?
Shushuku: Oh, yeah! You're right! I'm feeling happier already!
Shushuku: Hehe, I'll brew you my favorite tea! It'll be the best tea ever, just you wait and see!
Vyrn: Uh... Is everything okay with her?
Her mood greatly improved, Shushuku guides the others to her house.
Lyria: So this is where you live... Thanks for inviting us over!
Vyrn: Whoa!
Stepping inside, the crew is immediately met with the sight of pure chaos. Clothes and various knickknacks litter the room.
Vyrn: This place is a mess...
Lyria: Um... I can barely tell the floor from the walls...
Shushuku: It's fine! You're imagining things!
Vyrn: Nothing about this is fine! I'm shocked ya even brought us over!
Shushuku: I hate cleaning though! It's a waste of time!
Lyria: You can't keep living like this... It's not very healthy...
Lyria: Shushuku, let's tidy up your room first!
Shushuku: Now?
Lyria: Yeah, now! We'll help you out—right, (Captain)?
Lyria, seeing (Captain)'s nod of approval, hands Shushuku a spare rag, and they all start cleaning the room.
Vyrn: Lyria, I'm done sweepin' this part.
Lyria: Okay, I'll wipe it down then.
Shushuku: I found two rupies!
Vyrn: Hey, there's this little safe over here.
Lyria: It looks pretty sturdy. Let's put it aside for now.
Shushuku: Three more rupies! That makes five!
Vyrn: Ya cleanin' or what?
Shushuku: I-I am! See? I wiped down the area over here!
Vyrn: Ya call this cleaning? It's even dirtier than it was a second ago!
Lyria: Hahaha... I'll go throw these clothes into a laundry basket.
Lyria: Huh? What are these earrings doing here? This shade of red looks familiar...
Vyrn: Hey, those are the earrings you wanted to buy earlier!
Shushuku: So I wasn't going crazy! I already got myself a pair! It must've slipped my mind!
Vyrn: I swear, she doesn't take a single thing seriously...
Lyria: In any case, at least your room is all clean now!
Shushuku: It's as good as new! Good work, everybody!
Vyrn: Ya could've pitched in a bit more.
Lyria: Oh, I almost forgot! Shushuku, where do you want us to put the safe we found?
Shushuku: Uh... What's that safe supposed to be for again? My head hurts just thinking about it...
Vyrn: Did ya lose the key or something? Is there even a key at all?
Lyria: I wonder what's inside...
Shushuku: Me too! I don't really remember, but maybe some kinda treasure!
Lyria: Hehe... Well, let's leave it here until we can find the key! I also found this old book lying around.
Lyria cracks open the dust-covered book to find a picture of the pendant Baihu had left behind.
Lyria: This is the same as the one we picked up! It says here that it's a yupei.
Shushuku: So that's why it looked familiar! I must've seen the yupei in this book!
Lyria: Let's see... It says here that, for many generations, it was your family's duty to take down Baihu and perform a wake on the yupei...
Vyrn: Heh, I knew there was something fishy about ya, you scatterbrain! You're actually involved in all this, aren't ya?
Shushuku: It's really no big deal!
Shushuku: Who even cares about Baihu or my family's duties? I know I don't!
Vyrn: I dunno, sounds pretty important to me... Were you always this hardheaded?
Shushuku goes silent, her face suddenly twisting into a gloomy frown.
Shushuku: I'd rather not think about my past.
Vyrn: S-sorry. I didn't mean to dig up any bad memories...
Shushuku: It's okay! Don't worry about it!
Shushuku: I got it! There's someone I know who might have the answers to your questions!
Shushuku: I'll introduce you guys! Follow—
Lyria: Shushuku! Are you okay?
Shushuku: I'm so... hungry...
Lyria: Huh?
Shushuku: Need... prawns... The plumpest in all of Auguste...
Lyria: You want... prawns? I think I saw a prawn restaurant on the way here...
Shushuku: Actually, scratch that... I want demonbream... My travel guide said something... about needing a prawn to hook one...
Lyria: Huh? Are there really any nearby shops that sell such a rare fish?
Shushuku: Must have... demonbream...
Vyrn: Sheesh... Well, you did work pretty hard cleanin' up. I guess it wouldn't hurt to treat ya.
That night, (Captain) and the others somehow manage to locate a restaurant selling demonbream, where they all enjoy a dinner and eat to their hearts' content.
Soon the Day Will Come
(Captain) and the others visit one of Shushuku's acquaintances to learn more about the yupei. She receives a golden key from a dread-inducing presence that only she can see, which causes memories of her grueling childhood full of training to come flooding back.
Hoping to learn more about the fallen yupei, (Captain) and company follow Shushuku to her supposedly knowledgeable acquaintance.
Lyria: Brrr... This place is so dark and chilly... It's kinda scary...
Vyrn: It's givin' me the heebie-jeebies... Are ya sure someone even lives here?
Shushuku: Yeah! Don't worry, I've never met a nicer soul! C'mon, follow me!
The crew arrives in front of what appears to be a shrine. Shushuku then knocks on its door before calling for her friend.
Shushuku: Koku? Koku! Are you asleep or something? Wake up!
Lyria: I've got a bad feeling about this...
An air of impending doom suddenly fills the cave, causing (Captain) to break out into a cold sweat.
Shushuku: Oh, there you are! How have you been? Looks like you're doing great!
The cave walls reverberate from Shushuku's cheerful voice as she shouts into the void.
Vyrn: So who's she talking to? I don't see anybody around...
Shushuku: Huh? Are you really that worn out? Here, maybe some of my favorite snacks will cheer you up!
Shushuku: Wait, you're tired because of me?
Shushuku: But I didn't do anything wrong!
Shushuku: Fine, I might not be very useful, but... what's that got to do with your exhaustion?
Shushuku: Hold on, why are you giving me a key? What's this even for?
Shushuku: I have no idea what you're talking about. Do I need this key in order to learn more about the yupei?
Shushuku: Ah, wait! Hold on a sec! I still don't get it! Come baaack!
No longer sensing the ominous presence, (Captain) wipes the sweat away.
Shushuku: Hrm... I can't say I understand what's going on, but it looks like we have some kind of key now...
Vyrn: Are you sure that friend of yours isn't dangerous? I still feel chills goin' down my spine...
Shushuku: You do? But now that you mention it, I actually haven't the slightest clue.
Vyrn: Are you sayin' ya don't even know who you're talkin' to?
Shushuku: Hm, probably some kind of spirit—not that I know what a spirit's supposed to be like!
Lyria: A-anyway, let's get out of here!
As the party heads back outside, Shushuku stares inquisitively at the golden key in her hands.
Shushuku: (I swear... I've seen this before... But where?)
Shushuku: Duty this, duty that! I'm sick of hearing it! I'm getting rid of my training sword and handbook—and there's nothing you can do to stop me!
Shushuku: (I remember having... a training sword... and handbook... a long time ago...)
Young Shushuku: Sob... Sniffle...
Shushuku's Mother: Your opponent is still standing. Again.
The young Shushuku tightly grips her wooden sword. Come rain or shine, she spends every day training in order to fulfill her family's duty.
Young Shushuku: Sniffle... Volleying Blade... One, two, three!
Shushuku fights back her tears, putting her full weight behind each slash—but the dummy opponent refuses to budge.
Young Shushuku: Ow!
Shushuku looks down at her hands and spots a small red trickle coming from one of many calluses.
Young Shushuku: I'm bleeding...
Her mother quickly disinfects the wound and bandages the injured hand. Not wasting a single moment, she then speaks sternly to her daughter.
Shushuku's Mother: One more time.
Young Shushuku: But—
Shushuku's Mother: You still haven't advanced to the next stage of training even after nearly a decade of daily practice.
Young Shushuku: Sniffle... But my hand hurts...
Shushuku's Mother: Listen to me carefully, Shushuku. Now, it is I who is responsible for keeping Baihu in check, but one day, that burden will fall on you.
Shushuku's Mother: The time will come when it is you who will be in charge—that day could very well be tomorrow.
Young Shushuku: ...
Shushuku's Mother: When Baihu returns once more, it is our duty to defeat it before it can bring calamity to these skies...
Shushuku's mother brushes aside her daughter's bangs and gently strokes the beautiful golden crystal before her.
Shushuku's Mother: You were born to be a Cardinal Saint. Your body itself is proof of your destiny.
Shushuku's Mother: It was never my wish to force any of this upon you... And yet...
Young Shushuku: ...
Young Shushuku: Okay... I'll do it... I'll keep practicing!
Though but a child, Shushuku pushes through the pain and suffering, ignoring her youthful desires, and dedicates her every moment to training.
Young Shushuku: Urgh, I'm exhausted... But I still have to do some review reading before heading to bed...
Young Shushuku: Sniffle... Sob... It's okay. I can do this...
Young Shushuku: I need to train even harder... Someday, it'll be me who's in charge!
The day eventually arrives when her mother falls in battle, and Shushuku, now thirteen years of age, must rise to the challenge, facing Baihu on her own.
Baihu: ...!
Young Shushuku: Mother... I, Shushuku, will take on your duties and finish what you, the previous Cardinal Saint, could not—I swear it on the name of our family!
Young Shushuku: I-I'll be fine. I trained every single day! I've basically memorized my handbook with how many times I read it!
Young Shushuku: Volleying Blade!
Shushuku slashes at Baihu using the same techniques she had perfected over her countless training sessions.
Young Shushuku: Nice! I used everything I practiced so far! This should be enough to—
Baihu: ...
In the middle of her celebration, Shushuku notices Baihu from the corner of her eye. Her opponent sits before her, almost mockingly, without so much as a scratch.
Young Shushuku: Eeeek!
In an instant, Baihu strikes back, sending Shushuku flying. She gathers what little strength she has remaining and barely escapes with her life.
Young Shushuku: Huff... huff... I could train for a hundred years, and I still wouldn't be able to beat that thing!
Young Shushuku: My endless training... The pain and suffering I put up with... All for what?
Young Shushuku: Waaaah!
Punching a nearby wall, Shushuku laments the futility of her struggles—with nothing but a few bleeding calluses to show for her efforts.
Young Shushuku: Sniffle... Sob...
Suddenly, a certain evil presence appears from the shadows. It approaches the despairing young girl to offer a word of sympathy.
???: ...
Young Shushuku: Wh-who are you?
Young Shushuku: Yeah, I worked so hard... It's frustrating... Really, really frustrating...
Young Shushuku: Actually, maybe it isn't that I'm frustrated...
Young Shushuku: Because if that were the case, I'd want to train even harder! But I don't—no, I can't!
Young Shushuku: People keep telling me that things will happen one day, but when is "one day" even going to come? Just how long do I have to train if I want to defeat Baihu?
Young Shushuku: I don't care about being a Cardinal Saint! I could keep at it for a century and nothing would change!
Young Shushuku: What's the matter? Cat got your tongue? You know just as well as I do that it's impossible.
Young Shushuku: Oh well... At the end of the day, it's my own fault for foolishly chasing a goal I could only hope to "one day" accomplish...
Young Shushuku: How did I even put up with all of this for so long—and why?
Some time later, Shushuku finds herself standing before a mirror. Her surroundings have completely changed, and the figure in the reflection is nearly unrecognizable.
Shushuku: I've had it with waiting for things to happen. I'm tired of it all. It's about time I put myself first!
Shushuku: No more trying my hardest for a day that will never come! I'm living for the here and now!
In that moment, Shushuku buries her past in the far depths of her mind, changing everything about herself—from how she dresses to her manner of speech.
Shushuku: (Everything I am now traces back to that day... But if I hadn't listened to that voice, then...)
Shushuku: (This key... Is it mine?)
Vyrn: Hellooo? Can you hear me?
Shushuku: Hm? Ah, right. I can hear you just fine!
Shushuku: Oof!
Vyrn: I told ya to watch your step...
Lyria: Look, Shushuku. You scraped yourself. I'll fix you up.

Squinting, (Captain) and the others slowly emerge from the cave into the bright outdoors.

???: No matter. They're a nonissue. I'll wait for as long as it takes to see my plans through...
Shrouded by the cave's shadows, a mysterious figure gazes at the crew with a cold, piercing glare.
Turned Away No Longer
As the crew is leaving, Baihu suddenly appears and attacks Shushuku while her back is turned. (Captain) takes the hit in her stead but is hurt as a result. Shushuku then protects the crew before passing out. She wakes up in her room and decides to face the cardinal beast once more.
Now in possession of a mysterious key, Shushuku and the crew head home.
Lyria: Hold on... I sense something coming this way!
Baihu: ...!
Shushuku: Huh? Baihu? Did you actually follow us all the way here?
Shushuku: Grk... I've already made it clear that I've abandoned my duties! Leave me alone!
With a hint of bitterness in her voice, Shushuku lashes out at Baihu before turning her back on the cardinal beast.
Shushuku: I don't have anything to do with you now. I'm going home.
Baihu: ...!
Choose: Watch out, Shushuku!
Shushuku: Wha?
In the heat of the moment, (Captain) reflexively leaps in front of Shushuku, taking Baihu's attack in her stead.
Lyria: (Captain)! Are you okay?
The captain barely manages to block Baihu's onslaught but is heavily wounded as a result.
Shushuku: Why... did you protect me?
Baihu: ...!
Riled up, Baihu once again engages, viciously swiping at (Captain) in an attempt to finish off its target.
The injury (Captain) had sustained moments earlier leaves the captain unable to fight back.
Shushuku: Hrgh!
Lyria: Shushuku!
Shushuku: I'm sorry... I'm the reason... you got hurt... I shouldn't have turned my back...
Vyrn: Hey! Get yourself together!
Shushuku: Looks like... there's no escaping my destiny... Urgh... Run, everybody...
Vyrn: We're not leavin' ya behind, you fool!
Shushuku: You're the fools... Hurry up... and get outta here...
After urging the others to flee, Shushuku's head drops to the side, and she blacks out.
Lyria: Shushuku! What do we do?
Ignoring the searing pain, (Captain) picks Shushuku up and carries her piggyback.
Baihu: ...!
Seeing Shushuku unconscious, Baihu abandons the scene. As it leaves, the cardinal beast can be seen slamming its paws into the ground in a fit of rage.
Lyria: Now's our chance, (Captain)! Let me help!
Still carrying Shushuku, (Captain) pushes forward, powering through the agony together with Lyria's assistance.
Shushuku: (I feel warm... Am I being carried?)
Shushuku: (Oh, I see... I just don't get... why you choose to lend me a hand... even though I tried to run...)

Shushuku: Mmgrh...
Shushuku wakes up to find herself at home in her own bed.

A shadowy arm begins to stretch out towards Shushuku but stops and retreats after a brief pause.
Shushuku: This is where the old me used to cry... All I wanted was for someone to recognize my hard work...
Vyrn: Oh, hey. Looks like our resident scatterbrain is finally awake! I was kinda worried after seein' ya pass out like that.
Lyria: Yeah, it's good to see you up again! Here, the doctor said to take this medicine.
Shushuku: Vyrn, Lyria... I'm sorry that (Captain) got hurt because of me...
Shushuku jolts up and looks at (Captain) straight in the eye before continuing.
Shushuku: I'm gonna go face Baihu now!
Vyrn: Now? I dunno what's goin' on here, but shouldn't ya at least wait until you're all—
Shushuku: You fool! What if I end up changing my mind?
Vyrn: I didn't say ya shouldn't do it—just that it can wait...

(Captain) and company watch as Shushuku and Baihu engage in battle. The back and forth between the two resembles a beautiful dance, and it is through this exchange that Shushuku finally accepts the childhood of hardship she had to endure. Reinvigorated, she prepares to finish Baihu off.
In order to observe Shushuku's battle with Baihu, the crew heads over to Western Solitary at the crack of dawn.
Baihu: ...!
The cardinal beast bares its fangs, snapping at Shushuku as if to signify that it had been awaiting her arrival.
Shushuku: (Captain), you guys wait over there and watch.
The captain heeds her words, standing down to give Shushuku some space.
Shushuku: Baihu... I don't know why, but I think I understand what's going through your mind.
Shushuku: My body feels incredibly hot, like something in there's about to bubble over...
Shushuku: I'm sure it's the same for you. We've both been holding it in for far too long.
Taking a moment to tighten the grip on her family's sword, Shushuku faces Baihu.

The two exchange blows in a battle reminiscent of a captivating waltz.

Baihu slams its paws into a massive boulder, crushing it and causing a slew of rock shards to rain down on the nearby crew.

In an instant, Shushuku leaps in front of the others and protects them from the falling debris with a twirl of her blade.

Shushuku: H-huh? My body just moved on its own...
Young Shushuku: Sniffle... Volleying Blade... One, two, three!

In response to Shushuku's incredible fervor, Baihu lets out a ferocious roar, and the two thrust themselves into battle once more.

Having finally bested Baihu, Shushuku nearly breaks out into tears. While preparing to perform a wake, she notices that Baihu appears dejected and decides against it. Immediately thereafter, she collapses from exhaustion, so the crew brings her aboard the Grandcypher.
Shushuku: Take this! Hragh!
Baihu: ...!
Shushuku: Ahahaha! Say, Baihu! Are you having fun too?
Vyrn: Uh... They're supposed to be fightin', right?
Lyria: Hm... It feels more like they're playing around though.
Shushuku: Grrragh!
Baihu: ...
Shushuku shouts at the top of her lungs as she finishes Baihu off, after which the defeated cardinal beast slowly fades away.
Lyria: You did it, Shushuku!
Vyrn: Yeah, we saw everything!
Shushuku: I did it... I won!
Shushuku: Thanks, (Captain)! Vyrn, Lyria—you too! Thank you so much!
Seeing Shushuku on the verge of tears, (Captain) shoots her a smile to lighten her mood.
Shushuku: Haha... Ahahaha...
After gathering themselves, the crewmates notice another beautiful pendant lying where Baihu had fallen mere moments ago.
Shushuku: This must be proof that I've bested Baihu—I'm sure of it.
As Shushuku picks the pendant up, it begins to resonate with the one in (Captain)'s hand, merging to form a single, shining yupei.
Shushuku: Um... I think I'm supposed to perform a wake on this as a Cardinal Saint or something...
Shushuku: Hm? Where am I?
Baihu: ...
Shushuku: Oh, it's you. Why do you look so sad?

Suddenly, a loud rumbling fills the air, and the ground beneath the crew begins to shake violently.
Vyrn: The island's movin' again! If it gets to the Grim Basin, we're done for!
Lyria: Shushuku, wake up! We gotta get out of here!
Shushuku: I can't move... I'm exhausted from going all out earlier...
Lyria: No way...
Shushuku: I'm gonna take a nap... The rest of you can go on ahead without me...
Vyrn: Sheesh... What should we do with her, (Captain)?
Choose: Drag her aboard the Grandcypher.
Vyrn: Yeah, seems pretty dangerous out here...

Vanishing Shadow
(Captain) insists that Shushuku take the reward money for defeating Baihu, which she uses to pay off all her debts. The Cardinal Saint then boards the Grandcypher, where she runs into Lowain, Elsam, and Tomoi. Finally, as she takes a nap outside, an ominous shadow gazes her way.
Shushuku: Sorry for the wait! I'm done packing now! It's time to depart for the Grandcypher!
Vyrn: Hey, you've got stuff spillin' out of your bag.
Lyria: Is that sword made out of wood? It looks very similar to your family heirloom.
Shushuku: Yeah, I practiced with it a lot when I was little. I don't really need it now, but it's still got an important place in my heart!
Shushuku places a hand on her practice weapon, carefully feeling its rough wooden surface. The look on her face is a kind one.
Shushuku: Anyway, let's go! I've packed enough snacks for you guys, too, so we should be good!
Vyrn: Nobody asked you to do that!
Client: Here's your compensation for today, (Captain). Thank you so much for taking care of Baihu for us.
(Captain) accepts the bag of money and hands it over to Shushuku.
Shushuku: Hm? Why are you giving this to me? These are your earnings.
Lyria: Hehe, but you're the one who actually took down Baihu!
The captain nods in agreement, forcing the bag deeper into Shushuku's arms.
