Mistah Spinnah
Spinnah saves a merchant from a monster by using his spin blades. Inspired, the merchant offers to help make spin blades popular again, which is an offer Spinnah accepts. After some time apart from Spinnah, (Captain) and crew run into a child who says that a man named Mistah Spinnah has been doing trick shows and making spin blades extremely popular.
You there! Yes, you! Have you heard of spin blades?
At one point in time, they were the hottest toys in all the skies. But now they're a forgotten piece of history!
However, one man still keeps spin blades near and dear to his heart!
Man: S-somebody help meee!
Monster: Grooar!
Spinnah: Duck!
Man: Huh?
Spinnah: Take this!
Monster: Roaaar!
Flinching from the sudden attack, the frightened monsters scurry away and disappear into the forest.
Lyria: Looks like we made it just in time! Are you okay?
Man: Y-you saved me! Who... Who are you people?
Spinnah: The name's Spinnah! Glad to see you're not hurt.
Spinnah: What's a guy like you doing in this forest alone? You should know there are monsters here.
Man: Right, I should've been more careful... I just got so absorbed in trying to figure out my next big product that I wandered this far without realizing.
Introducing themselves as well, (Captain) and friends explain that they are a crew out hunting monsters for a request.
Vyrn: Your next big product, huh... Does that mean you're a merchant? What kinda thing were you looking for all the way out here?
Man: Er, I wasn't searching for something specific. I was mulling over an idea...
Man: I was trying to predict what the next big hit on the market will be. Next thing I knew, I was being saved by you folks.
Lyria: Next big hit?
Man: Well, you see, I'm a merchant that deals in...
Man: ...!
Spinnah: Something the matter?
Man: Wh-what's that you're holding?
Spinnah: Spin blades, of course! The peak of artistry, capable of gracing us with spectacular revolutions!
Man: Spin blades? I could've sworn those things were popular ages ago.
Man: Hold on... So when you saved me by chasing those monsters away...
Spinnah: You misunderstand. It wasn't I who saved you. The spin blades' rotations were your salvation.
Man: You really used them for combat? And it worked?
Spinnah: Heh. If it didn't, you wouldn't be here right now.
Spinnah: They're even capable of stuff like this.
With rotating spin blades in his hands, Spinnah rises into the air and begins to float.
Man: What in the skies... No one ever told me these kinds of tricks were possible!
Vyrn: I'm, uh, pretty sure Fidget Fingers here is the only guy capable of doing it...
Spinnah: Down we go...
Spinnah: I'm a spin blader whose mission is to spread the beauty and excitement of spin blades throughout the skies.
Spinnah: I'd be happy to teach you more about them if you're interested.
Man: Amazing...
Lyria: Huh?
Man: This is it! This is the product I've been looking for!
Man: You see, I'm a merchant that sells toys! Today must be a sign that...
Merchant: The next big thing will be spin blades! It's time for them to make a comeback! Won't you work with me to make it happen?
Spinnah: Now that's sudden. I'm not opposed to the idea, but what exactly makes you think you're qualified for the task?
Merchant: I can provide tons of outlets to sell in! And get the perfect production line going too!
Spinnah: I'm in!
Vyrn: Just like that?
Spinnah: (Captain), sorry! I'll be here for a while getting this new business venture started!
Lyria: Th-this is all so sudden... Are you sure you want to do it?
Spinnah: Yes! More than that, I have to! This is my calling!
Vyrn: Really just gonna dive right into it, huh...
His mind made up, Spinnah remains on the island to focus on developing new spin blades with the merchant.
Before the crew even realize it, fifty days have passed since the last time they've seen Spinnah.
Vyrn: Phew... That's another request down, smooth as can be.
Lyria: ...
Vyrn: I'm kinda cravin' apples. You think they're selling any nearby?
Neither (Captain) nor Lyria answer, remaining oddly quiet.
Vyrn: Uh... Something wrong, you guys?
Vyrn follows his friends' gazes to find them staring at a child.
More specifically, he sees they are staring at the toy in her hand.
Village Girl: ...!
Vyrn: Th-that's...
Lyria: Excuse me, can we ask you something?
Village Girl: Hm? What's up?
Vyrn: What's that you're spinning in your hands?
Village Girl: You mean you don't know? It's a spin blade!
Vyrn: (Just like I thought...)
The girl proudly shows off her whirling toy.
Lyria: Umm... Do you like spin blades?
Village Girl: Yeah! They're super popular right now!
Vyrn: Haha... Now that's a funny joke.
Village Girl: I'm not joking! Mistah Spinnah's tricks are so awesome, everyone wants to be like him!
Lyria: Mistah...
Vyrn: Spinnah? Wait, what?
The familiar name shocks the crew.
But the unfamiliar title brings an equal measure of confusion.
Beyond the Boom
The crew catches Spinnah performing impressive tricks onstage, much to the delight of his audience. Afterward, the merchant and his sponsor show up to show Spinnah their latest product—a light-up spin blade. However, Spinnah believes the lighting mechanisms interfere with the rotations of the blade, prompting him to demand the design be redone. The sponsor refuses and instead insists that Spinnah uses them for his next show.
In case you forgot, here's a summary of the previous events!
After a chance encounter, Spinnah teams up with a toy merchant to produce new spin blades.
He remains on the island after a tearful parting with his captain...
Countless days pass with no news of the man, until (Captain) and crew meet a girl playing with a spin blade. She tells them of Mistah Spinnah, a local spin blade legend!
Vyrn: You've gotta be kidding me...
Tracking down where Spinnah might be, the crew run into an astonishing sight.
Crowd: ...!
A large, excited crowd gathers in front of an outdoor stage.
Lyria: Are all these people really here for a spin blade show?
Vyrn: Maybe we got our info mixed up? This can't be right...
Before they can ask around, the show begins.
Fireworks go off as smoke fills the stage. Soon enough, a figure struts into view.
Spinnah: It's... showtime!
Lyria: Oh! Look, it's Spinnah!
Lyria: That... is Spinnah, right?
Vyrn: Has to be... I can't think of anyone else that would pull something like this.
Child 1: Mistah Spinnah!
Child 2: Show us your Spin the Spin trick!
Spinnah: Ask, and you'll receive!
Spinnah tosses the spin blades in his hands, catching them when they fly back like boomerangs. He then repeats the motion many times without breaking a sweat.
Child 1: Wow!
Child 2: He's so cool!
Spinnah unveils trick after trick, as the audience eats everything up with cheers and applause.
Vyrn: All these kids are holding their own spin blades...
Lyria: Even the adults too... Spin blades really are popular right now...
Spinnah: Hey, everyone! I didn't expect to see you here!
Lyria: Hi, Spinnah! It's been a while!
Vyrn: Sheesh... Trying to get around backstage was a nightmare...
Lyria: Ahaha... Lucky for us, we managed to run into that merchant from before.
Spinnah: Well, what did you think? You saw the show, right? Wasn't it exhilarating?
Vyrn: Yeah, we were watching. What's going on? Don't tell me spin blades are actually in again.
Spinnah: The explanation is quite simple!
Spinnah: The magic of my newly developed spin blades combined with my magnificent tricks have made them extremely popular with children!
Lyria: That's awesome to hear!
Vyrn: Honestly I'm having a hard time believin' it...
Spinnah: We still haven't hit the popularity levels of the first spin blade wave.
Spinnah: But I'm working on making this second wave even greater than the first.
Spinnah: It won't be long now!
Vyrn: Guess there's no telling what the future holds...
Merchant: Spinnah, our newest sample's finished!
The merchant comes walking up with a strange new spin blade in hand.
Merchant: Watch this.
Merchant: It lights up when it spins! Amazing, isn't it?
Vyrn: Whoa! You aren't kidding!
The edges of the prototype light up, forming circles of red, blue, and yellow as it spins in the merchant's grasp.
Lyria: Wow, it's so pretty!
Vyrn: (I kinda want one now...)
Spinnah: No, this won't do. We can't sell this.
Merchant: What? B-but why...
Spinnah borrows the spin blade for a moment, then shakes his head.
Spinnah: Its rotations don't spark joy. The lighting mechanisms are throwing off its center of gravity.
Spinnah: Spin blades are works of art. Take away their beauty, and you're left with nothing but a toy.
Merchant: Er... Aren't they toys in the first place? Otherwise, why would a toy merchant like me stock them...
Vyrn: (This guy gets it.)
Spinnah: Wrong! Spin blades can serve as toys, but that's only one of their functions!
Merchant: Regardless, we'll be in trouble if you don't use these for your next performance and impress the audience!
Merchant: Our sponsor helped me make these, and they have to sell!
Sponsor: Is something the matter with our new product?
Merchant: Ah! If it isn't our sponsor himself... No, there's no problem. We just, um...
Spinnah: This blade is defective at best. You should scrap the entire design and start over.
Sponsor: My, my! There's no need to be so unreasonable. Besides, it's far too late to walk back our production.
Spinnah: Don't you see how it struggles to rotate? How can you even call this a spin blade, when it fails to live up to the beauty of its name?
Sponsor: Flick it hard enough, and it still spins, doesn't it? You're an adult. You should know that art has no place in the business world.
Sponsor: Your only concern should be using our new product and performing your fancy tricks on stage.
Spinnah: ...
Sponsor: Popularity is grown through inciting demand, which is your job.
Sponsor: Keep our customers coming, and spin blades will be the hottest thing in all the skies.
The man arrogantly huffs and struts away, walking toward a group of men nearby.
Spinnah: I've never seen those people before. Shouldn't this area be for staff and related parties only?
Merchant: What does it matter? We have more important things to discuss!
Merchant: I know you're upset, but sometimes sacrifices have to be made for progress! You want this spin blade boom to get even bigger, don't you?
Merchant: Please! Won't you agree to do this?
Spinnah: This is definitely a problem...
Vyrn: Hmm... I'm not sure I like that sponsor guy of yours.
Lyria: Are you going to be okay, Spinnah?
Spinnah: Haha, of course. It's nothing I can't handle.
Spinnah: Talking to him has helped me realize that I have to rethink my approach...
Beyond the Boom: Scene 2
(Captain) and crew learn that the sponsor and his accomplices are buying up all the spin blade stock and reselling it, artificially increasing prices. Spinnah, to everyone else's surprise, doesn't step in to punish them. Instead, he gets ready for his next show, excitedly interacting with the kids waiting in line.
The day of the new spin blade's unveiling arrives. (Captain) and friends join Spinnah in his dressing room before the performance is set to begin.
Vyrn: The seats were kinda empty when we took a peek, but the merchant guy says it should be a full house later.
Lyria: We've still got some time before the show starts. But, Spinnah...
Wearing a frustrated frown, Spinnah flicks the spin blade in his hand.
Spinnah: This blade really doesn't spin right... But the lights do a good job of making it stand out.
Vyrn: Honestly? I kinda want one... It's working on me...
Vyrn: Doesn't help that the whole town's playing with spin blades everywhere you look...
Lyria: A-actually, I kinda want one too, haha...
- Me three...
- I think I'm good.
Choose: Me three...Vyrn: You're in the same camp, huh?
Spinnah: I see... Sorry, I don't have extras on me though.
Choose: I think I'm good.Spinnah: Hah! Oh, (Captain), there's no need to hide how you truly feel.
Spinnah: But I'm sorry. I don't have any extras on me.
Continue 1Vyrn: No way... You really don't have a single one?
Spinnah: Not a one. We sell out every time we have any in stock.
Spinnah: It doesn't help that resellers are also buying up everything they can.
Spinnah: With a shortage going, prices are climbing higher and higher. I wish we could do something about it.
Vyrn: That does sound like a problem...
Spinnah: On top of that, there are some strange characters involved in our business lately.
Lyria: Strange? How so?
Spinnah: Hold on. I can hear something coming from the next room over.
Lyria: What? I don't hear anything...
Spinnah: The rotations of my blade drew out the noise.
Spinnah: Let's see what happens if I amp up the volume.
Vyrn: You're gonna... do what now?
Spinnah attaches his spinning blade to the wall. As soon as he does, someone's voice fills the room.
Crook: Hahahaha! We are raking it in!
Lyria: Wh-whoa! Who was that?
Spinnah: Let me explain! The gyration of the spinning blade is amplifying the vibrations from the other room, allowing us to hear what's going on through the wall!
Vyrn: What's this guy gonna come up with next...
Sponsor: It's simply terrible that all your reselling means prices won't be dropping for a while!
Reseller: Heheheh! Doesn't matter how high it goes, we'll have the market cornered!
Crook: Hahaha! As long as goods are scarce on the regular market, prices can stay high!
Reseller: People are desperate enough to buy at our jacked-up prices too!
Crook: Everybody wins! Now that's what I call cooperation! Ain't that right, sir?
Sponsor: Exactly! Low supplies and high demand is how you keep your products in the limelight!
Spinnah: So they're purposely making sure stock is low and prices stay high... That way demand will be sky-high.
Vyrn: D-does that actually work?
Spinnah: People covet rare items. At the same time, they want what everyone else has.
Lyria: I don't really get it...
Spinnah: Right now, spin blades are popular enough that everyone has at least one. When a new spin blade comes out, people want it because it's both new and a rarity, at least in the beginning.
Spinnah: If the resellers buy everything and control how much is sold on the market, then no one will complain when the original seller increases their prices. They'll be too desperate to get their hands on the product.
Spinnah: It's a strategy that works so well... even you three wanted your own spin blades.
Vyrn: Can't really argue with you there...
Vyrn: S-still! We can't just let them get away with such scummy tactics!
Vyrn: We gotta give 'em a talking-to!
Spinnah: Where do you think you're going?
A sudden gust sweeps the room, returning Vyrn to his original position.
Vyrn: Wh-what the heck?
Spinnah: Sorry, but you need to let it go for now. I've got an important performance coming up.
Vyrn: Seriously? You're gonna turn a blind eye to all this awful stuff just to make spin blades more popular?
Lyria: Th-that's not true... is it?
Spinnah: Oh, it's completely true. I've got to be an adult about this. Otherwise, spin blades are never making a comeback.
Lyria: Huh?
Vyrn: I thought you were a good guy, Fidget Fingers! Say it ain't it so!
(Captain) and friends gape at Spinnah in shock. Paying the crew no mind, the spin blader leaves the room with purposeful strides.
Vyrn: H-hey! Come back here!
Child 1: Look, it's Mistah Spinnah!
Child 2: Mistah Spinnah's here!
Spinnah: Heh, I see you kids formed a nice, neat line. Good job! The wait will be over before you know it!
Child 1: Can you show us a trick?
Spinnah: Let's not be hasty. You're here for the performance, right?
Spinnah attends to his fans in line with a charming smile.
Lyria: ...
Vyrn: Can't believe he's playing around with the kids at a time like this...
Lyria: The kids are having fun though... He is, too.
Vyrn: I guess... that's not something we can complain about...
Lyria: It can't be easy, trying to make spin blades popular again.
Despite the despicable business practices that created the spin blade boom, the children's smiles are all genuine.
Vyrn: But is this really the only way to do it?
Beyond the Boom: Scene 3
After the spin blade show starts, the audience vanishes, revealing themselves to be illusions created by Spinnah's spin blade technique. Spinnah explains that he had disclosed the sponsor's wrongdoing to everyone in line, convincing them to leave while also ruining future business ventures. Furious, the sponsor's lackeys set upon Spinnah.
Child 1: I wanna see Mistah Spinnah's tricks already!
Child 2: Nooo! I forgot to grab his autograph earlier!
Children and their guardians fill the seating area, chatting excitedly among themselves as they wait.
From backstage, (Captain) and friends peek out at the large crowd.
Lyria: That's a lot of people...
Vyrn: You mean a lotta suckers about to buy those crappy spin blades.
Lyria: Spinnah did say the new ones weren't very good...
Lyria: And those resellers were friends of his sponsor too...
Vyrn: Y'know you can be honest with us, Lyria. What's on your mind?
Lyria: Spinnah's dream is about to come true, but...
Vyrn: Doesn't feel good when it's happening like this, huh? Maybe we should stop him...
- We can trust him.
- Let's hold off a little longer.
Choose: We can trust him.Lyria: You're right. He probably has a plan.
Choose: Let's hold off a little longer.Vyrn: If you're sure. I mean, he wouldn't actually stoop that low, right?
Continue 1Spinnah: Sorry to keep you waiting, everyone!
Children: Mistah Spinnah!
The spin blader performs trick after trick to the cheers of his adoring fans.
Spinnah: Time for a grand unveiling! Gaze your eyes upon our newest spin blade!
As Spinnah raises his light-up spin blade into the air and gives it a whirl, the crowd erupts with excitement.
Child 1: I want one!
Child 2: I need one!
Sponsor: Heheheh... The kids are loving the new design.
Merchant: Our new spin blades are going to fly off the shelves!
Reseller: Too bad I'm gonna be the one snatching 'em all up!
Crook: Go as wild as you want. Just don't forget this island's my turf.
Vyrn: Those sleazebags... They're not even trying to hide it.
Lyria: ...
Vyrn: Are we really gonna just stand around and watch? What're you staring at anyway?
Lyria: Um... Is it just me, or does the crowd seem kind of... transparent?
Child 1: I want it!
Vyrn: H-hold on, they're see-through to me too!
Child 2: Is it on sale yet?
Sure enough, even the scenery is visible through the audience members. But after another moment, the apparitions disappear altogether.
Merchant: Huh?
Sponsor: Wh-where did everyone go? Did they simply vanish into thin air?
Vyrn: This has gotta be...
Spinnah: Come one, come all! No need to be shy! There's no one else here but us!
Crook: What the hell's going on! Where'd all the people go?!
Spinnah: Why, nowhere! Since they were never here in the first place!
Spinnah: Allow me to explain! By rapidly rotating my spin blades, I was able to scoop up dust particles using the resulting draft to create illusions!
Sponsor: Th-that's completely absurd... and doesn't explain how your illusions could speak!
Spinnah: I can expand on that! By overlapping the sound of my spinning blades together, I was able to imitate the voices of people!
Reseller: H-how can that be possible?
Merchant: Spinnah, what is the meaning of this? What are you trying to pull...
Spinnah: Why, the reason is simple!
Spinnah: I am extremely angry with you all!
Merchant: ...!
Spinnah: You would rather soil your hands than let beauty thrive!
Reseller: Wh-who cares about that! What about my merchandise?
Spinnah: You can try to resell if you want, but I don't think anyone's going to bite. I already spread the good word of truth.
Sponsor: You did what?
Spinnah: I told every child and guardian in line exactly what you have been up to this whole time!
Merchant: Excuse me?
Spinnah: There were still some children that wanted the goods regardless, but their guardians took them home. Hence our lack of audience.
Vyrn: Fidget Fingers... So that's what you were doing earlier!
Spinnah: This is the end of your schemes and this sham of a spin blade boom!
Reseller: Why, you... What have you done to my business!
Crook: Y-you're going to pay for this! Men, get him!
As the unscrupulous man's lackeys surround Spinnah on all sides, (Captain) prepares to jump into the fray.
Spinnah: (Captain), you can leave this to me!
Vyrn: You, uh, sure about that?
Beyond the Boom: Scene 4
Utilizing technique after technique, Spinnah defeats all the wrongdoers except the sponsor, who had fled on an airship during the fighting. Levitating up to the ship on his spin blades, Spinnah grabs him and ties him up with his lackeys. The merchant apologizes for letting greed get the better of him, and Spinnah lets him off easy with a punch to the face and some advice. Though this endeavor ends less than ideally, Spinnah swears that he will bring about a new spin blade boom.
Spinnah: Hmph!
Spinnah launches his spin blade out as flames erupt from it, creating a whirlwind of searing pain for his foes.
Crook: Hot! Hot, hot, hot!
Lyria: I-is that spin blade on fire?
Spinnah: Allow me to clarify! You see, you can create flames by rapidly accelerating the rotation of the blades and creating friction with the air!
Spinnah: But that's not the only trick up my sleeve!
Lackey: ...!
A single lackey hits the floor while Spinnah simply holds a rotating spin blade in his hand.
Crook: The h-hell did you do?
Spinnah: The answer is obvious! I knocked him unconscious using the ultrasonic waves from my revolving blade!
Out of nowhere, a sandstorm sweeps across the stage and coils into a raging vortex around the reseller.
Reseller: Yeowch! Sand's hitting me all over! Gahhh!
Spinnah: Confused? Don't worry, I've got you! My spinning blades generated enough air movement to sweep sand particles off the ground and into the air!
One by one, the criminals fall to Spinnah's absurd techniques. However, it soon becomes clear they are short one crooked man in particular.
Merchant: U-um... Where did our sponsor go?
Spinnah: Look up. I'm pretty sure that's not a regularly scheduled airship.
Spinnah points at a single ship that has barely risen off the ground.
Merchant: That's the sponsor's ship!
Vyrn: So the slimeball's running away? Guess it's finally our turn to put in some work!
Spinnah: Hold it. Even if you rushed to the Grandcypher right now, you wouldn't make it in time.
Vyrn: Then what are we gonna do?
Sponsor: Another good business opportunity down the drain... Oh well, we can attempt another popularity boost down the line.
Spinnah: I wonder about that!
Sponsor: Huh?
Looking over his shoulder, the man spies Spinnah hovering outside the ship's railing.
Sponsor: Ahhh! H-how... You're floating?
Spinnah: This calls for an explanation! By utilizing two rapidly revolving spin blades, I can propel myself into the air and fly!
Spinnah: Now, let's get you back on the ground! I can't keep this trick up for long.
Without asking for permission, Spinnah grabs the sponsor and yanks him overboard.
Sponsor: L-let go of me!
Spinnah: Oh dear, it looks like we've exceeded the weight limit. Our descent is going to be a lot quicker than planned, sorry.
Spinnah: However, I could do as you requested and let you go. That way I can have a nice and easy landing.
Sponsor: D-don't let go of me!
Lyria: O-oh, wow... Spinnah flew up and took the sponsor!
Vyrn: There really was no point in us showing up, huh...
Once all the criminals are rounded up, the merchant hangs his head before the crew.
Merchant: I'm so sorry... I was supposed to help make spin blades the next big thing, but I lost sight of what really mattered.
Merchant: I could've turned things around the moment the sponsor brought his ne'er-do-well friends over...
Vyrn: Why'd you bother putting up with all the shady stuff in the first place?
Merchant: I'm ashamed to admit it, but I thought that's just how things worked in this business.
Merchant: That I'd have to get my hands dirty to some degree behind the scenes and pretend to be an upstanding citizen to everyone else.
Merchant: I was wrong. I promise I'll do better from now on, so please... give me another chance!
Spinnah: You...
Spinnah places a hand on the crying merchant's shoulder.
Merchant: Spinnah!
Spinnah: Hmph!
Merchant: Gah!
Without hesitation, Spinnah punches the man square in the face.
Lyria: Oh my gosh! Spinnah!
Vyrn: Weren't you two having a moment? Geez!
Spinnah: Do you really think a simple apology is good enough to forgive an adult who deceived children? I don't!
Lyria: That...
Vyrn: Well...
Merchant: That's fair!
Vyrn: (Huh. Maybe this guy's more sane than I thought.)
Spinnah: (Captain), you remember what I said in the dressing room, don't you? I needed to be an adult about this if I wanted spin blades to make a comeback.
Vyrn: Right... But the way you phrased it sounded like you were gonna do shady stuff too...
Spinnah: Haha, you misunderstood. I was referring to how this current wave of popularity had to end so I could create a new one.
Spinnah: Speaking of which... Today marks the end of the second spin blade boom and the beginning of the third!
Lyria: Oh! A th-third?
Spinnah: That's why I rounded up these scoundrels. They're going to be of no help for my next attempt.
Spinnah: Especially since they actively caused harm. Just looking at those spin blades makes my blood boil.
Vyrn: Heheh, now that sounds more like the Fidget Fingers we know!
Spinnah: Back to the Grandcypher we go, (Captain)! The third coming awaits our departure!
Merchant: U-uh... What about me?
Spinnah: If you really feel bad about what you've done, then spin some blades.
Merchant: You want me to... play with spin blades?
Spinnah: Behold their beauty. The blades will rotate steady and true once your heart is reformed from the inside out.
Spinnah: Because all answers lie within spin blades.
*Results may vary per person.
Vyrn: (Still, I don't get what he's saying half the time...)
Spinnah: Heheh!
The curtain closes on this chapter of spin blade history.
With his sights set on a new, true comeback, Spinnah swears to make his next attempt a resounding success.
