An Experience to Savor
After an eternity apart in the Nexus Labyrinth Dharma, Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu finally reunite. They come upon the Divine Generals and crew hungry after attempting to figure out the layer's cipher and offer to guide them to a place brimming with fruit. Receiving a taste of fruit for their troubles and enjoying the rowdy group's antics, the primal beasts eventually part with the mortals. Unwittingly, Tsukuyomi finds herself missing their presences already.
Tsukuyomi: ...
Inside this particular layer of Nexus Labyrinth Dharma, environs greatly resembling Lumacie Archipelago stretch all around.
Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu, two primal beasts unwittingly trapped inside Dharma, have finally reunited after an eternity apart.
The reunion wouldn't have been possible without the help of the Divine Generals and (Captain)'s crew, who have already taken their leave.
Amaterasu: What are they doing?
Tsukuyomi: Understanding the actions of skydwellers is challenging. Full comprehension is nearly impossible.
Amaterasu: Such fascinating individuals you've encountered, Tsukuyomi...
Despite parting ways with the mortals, the primal beasts come upon them once more, spotting them attempting what seems to be a bizarre dance.
Confused, but curious, the two observe from their hiding place under a canopy of fruit trees.
Tsukuyomi: From their distressed expressions, I believe they are in trouble.
Amaterasu: We should go see what ails them!
Amaterasu: Oh! So that is what's going on!
Tsukuyomi: ...
Kumbhira: Ahaha... Sorry to make you worry.
After getting through her initial surprise at seeing Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu again, Kumbhira explains the situation.
The only way to travel between Dharma's different layers is by unlocking their doors, which requires a cipher—an action embodying mortal essence.
However, someone has been overwriting the existing ciphers, which has left the Divine Generals and friends guessing at every solution they can.
Kumbhira: Singing, dancing, and cooking didn't work... And neither has anything else we've tried so far.
Huang: The problem is that there's no limit to what could work...
Having given up for the moment, Anila and a group of others begin to cook nearby, sending the smell of roasting vegetables through the air.
Lyria: Oh... I know I just ate a lot, but I guess I'm already hungry again.
Indala: We expended all that energy during our search. I could go for a bite myself... although it doesn't look like we have enough vegetables to go around.
Tsukuyomi: Amaterasu, wasn't there fruit growing in the forest we came from?
Amaterasu: There certainly was! We can take you there!
Leaving some of the group behind to watch the camp, the rest follow the primal beasts in search of more sustenance.
Andira: Wooow, there's all sorts everywhere! Do you think Mistress Medicine grabbed her fruits from a forest like this?
Indala: Fascinating. The bounty is plentiful, despite the lack of caretakers.
Kumbhira: These leaves... They're potato leaves! Oh, I can't wait to see the looks on everyone's faces when we bring our haul back.
Splitting up their tasks, the group get to work picking ripe fruit from the trees, foraging mushrooms from the roots, and pulling potatoes from the ground.
Huang: There's so much, and it all looks so tasty! Right, Tsuku?
Tsukuyomi: I don't possess the ability to predict how tasty something is through observation alone.
Amaterasu: The best we can do is judge whether or not something is ripe. Anything else is a little beyond us.
Bai: Wait, really? That sounds tough.
Tsukuyomi: It isn't a problem, as we don't require food to survive.
Huang: Hmm... I think you'll change your mind once you have a bite of this!
Cidala: Here!
Amaterasu: Mmph!
Huang stuffs a yellow peach into Tsukuyomi's mouth, and Bai stuffs a white one into Amaterasu's.
Laolao: Cut that out, you two! No feeding the primal beasts in their enclosure!
Amaterasu: Munch, munch... This is...
Both: Sweet...
Kumbhira: Oh no, you both have juice all over your chins... Hold still, I'll wipe it up for you.
Amaterasu: Thank you!
Huang: That's a yellow peach for Tsuku...
Bai: And a white one for Amaterasu.
Amaterasu: Ah, so they come in different colors. Tsukuyomi, would you like to try this one?
Tsukuyomi: Okay. Let's trade...
The two bring their peaches to each other's mouths and eagerly take another bite.
Huang: So? How is it? Good, right?
Amaterasu: Yes... It's extremely sweet and tasty!
Tsukuyomi: A stream of fresh juice bursts out as soon as one bites into the flesh.
Tsukuyomi: The more one eats, the more the sweetness spreads and refreshes.
Tsukuyomi: I can conclude... this is one ripe baby.
Amaterasu: I've had peaches before in the past, but for some reason, this one tastes better than any of them!
Andira: Well, things taste better when you eat them together, right?
Andira: Oh, look how huge that apple is! I'm gonna go grab it!
Tsukuyomi: Together...
Mulling over the information she just heard, Tsukuyomi casts her gaze over the group.
Indala: The fruits here are honestly incredible. A part of me wishes I could take some home to snack on between jobs.
Indala: All these fallen leaves were perfect for roasting the potatoes too... They should be right about done.
Kumbhira: Andira! Be careful up there!
Andira: Don't you worry—climbing trees is my thing! Look! Isn't this apple ginormous?
Tsukuyomi: ...
Everyone is so lively.
Amaterasu: Indeed. All the shouts and sounds do take a moment to get used to... But it's almost pleasant to listen to in the end.
Andira: Hot-hot-hot!
Hey, Tsukuyomi! Amaterasu! Indala roasted potatoes for us!
Kumbhira: Help with the harvest, and you deserve to help yourself to the harvest. Careful now, it's hot.
Kumbhira approaches Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi and holds out a single potato.
Amaterasu: Just one?
Kumbhira: Hehe... Did you know? Sharing one piece of food with someone always makes it taste better for the both of you.
Breaking the potato down the middle, Kumbhira offers the steaming halves to the primal beasts, who accept without hesitation.
Amaterasu: Oh!
Tsukuyomi: This is...
Huang: Hey! They're eating potatoes without us!
Andira: Hm? Munch...
Bai: They look so good... I mean, whatever. Peaches are better for getting bigger anyway—probably.
Laolao: You can't just say those kinds of things, gawr! Geez!
Laolao: Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu may be primal beasts, but those two somehow have way better manners than you gawrls.
Laolao: And that just won't do! You'll be getting a lesson later, you hear me?
Huang: Don't wanna!
Tsukuyomi: They are a rowdy group, but...
Amaterasu: It brings back memories, doesn't it?
Tsukuyomi: Yes...
Finished with their snacking, the gang returns to the rest of the group with their arms full of fresh food.
Kumbhira: Now that we're fed and focused, we should probably get back to finding our way forward...
Andira: Hmm... We've already tried so many things though. I don't even know if there's anything left for us to try.
Andira: What else could we do that a primal beast wouldn't? Maybe I need a fresh perspective...
Grumbling to herself, Andira nonchalantly flips upside down to think. But the moment she does so, the unexpected happens.
Divine Generals: Whaaa!
Thus, the group of skydwellers make their departure while the two primal beasts stay behind.
Amaterasu: How very strange. Was this place always this quiet?
Amaterasu: I can hear the leaves rustling... Animals running around and bugs buzzing. Everything is normal.
Amaterasu: Yet it all feels more still than usual.
Tsukuyomi: ...
Despite their boisterous attitude and inexplicable behavior, Tsukuyomi finds herself thinking of the mortals.
Tsukuyomi: They were very fascinating beings.
Tsukuyomi: (I wonder if we'll meet again someday...)
Although she is not yet aware of it, a kernel of anticipation buds in the primal beast's chest at the thought.
Comprehending the Incomprehensible
At Bhaisa's behest, (Captain) and crew take Tsukuyomi under their wing. Learning that the primal beast has no goal in particular but an abundance of curiosity, the group wonders how much Tsukuyomi knows about day-to-day life in the Sky Realm—the answer being plenty, thanks to Sankara and her descendants. However, Indala still decides to put that knowledge to the test.
Tsukuyomi: So this is the Sky Realm...
Finished with her trial, Tsukuyomi has left Nexus Labyrinth Dharma and stepped foot into the outside world for the first time.
A wealth of information quickly overwhelms her senses, including the observation that real sunlight and fresh air feel significantly different from their artificial counterparts.
However, what draws the most attention is the town surrounding Skydome Temple—her first taste of civilization, as Dharma had completely lacked that feature.
Tsukuyomi: I'll wait here until it's Amaterasu's time to appear.
???: Heeey!
Tsukuyomi: ...?
Is that...
An airship draws close to where Tsukuyomi floats in the air. Atop its deck, a familiar band of figures wave at her.
Tsukuyomi: Are you attempting to take me somewhere? If you are, that will present a problem for me.
Vyrn: Uh, the bigger problem is how you're floatin' right in front of the port and scarin' the pants off of everyone flying by.
Indala: We're actually here to pick you up, now that (Captain) has been assigned as your guardian.
Tsukuyomi: My guardian?
Vyrn: Yeah, you see...
Bhaisa of the Thirteen Buddhas gathers (Captain) and the Divine Generals to discuss her concerns.
She is particularly worried about how Tsukuyomi will fare after exiting Dharma.
For that reason, she wants to hire them once more to watch over the primal beast and serve as her guides.
Vyrn: I guess there's no reason not to, right?
Lyria: There are other primal beasts in our crew, and I'm here too, so it shouldn't be a problem!
Agreeing without hesitation, (Captain) accepts the request.
Indala: With us Divine Generals at your side as well, there's nothing to worry about—though the others are currently out on their own business...
Tsukuyomi: You seem insistent that I remain with you. Very well.
Indala: I'm glad you understand. If you'll follow us inside, we can discuss your future in more detail.
Indala: I'd like to begin by asking you a question.
Indala: What was the first thing you wanted to do when you exited Dharma?
The group settles into the Divine Generals' favorite cafe with cups of piping hot tea as Indala begins Tsukuyomi's interview.
Tsukuyomi: I wanted to wait for Amaterasu.
Vyrn: That goes without saying. We're curious if there's anything else you wanted to do.
Tsukuyomi: Not in particular.
Vyrn: Didn't even stop to think about it...
Lyria: Um... What kinds of things do you like? What do you like to do for fun?
Tsukuyomi: Like... Fun...
Tsukuyomi: Being surrounded by Vajra, Huang, and all of you...
Tsukuyomi: Isn't so bad, I suppose.
Lyria: Okay, that's a start!
Indala: Hmm... I suppose you prefer to listen and observe rather than take the initiative and chat.
Tsukuyomi: I also... keep thinking about the fruit and the potato I ate in Dharma.
Tsukuyomi: The fruit was sweet, and the potatoes were roasted to be sweet enough as well to match.
Tsukuyomi: It even softened to the point where biting into it was comparable to eating a peach—the skin broke without resistance, yielding to a rich sweetness that spread across the tongue.
Tsukuyomi: However, there was still a firmness to the food despite its softness, which lent itself to a pleasant chewiness in some portions...
Tsukuyomi: What was that sound just now?
Lyria: A-ahaha, don't worry about it.
Vyrn: That was one heckuva food review. You sure you're a primal beast?
Tsukuyomi: I am.
Vyrn: You've gone and made me hungry now too.
Indala: So Tsukuyomi is one of the gourmet-minded primal beasts.
Indala: Is her sense of taste superior... or is the act of eating itself enjoyable?
Lyria: Maybe she just really likes sharing a meal with everyone.
Tsukuyomi: I've heard that the secret to making food taste better is to share it with others.
Indala: I see... To tell the truth, this cafe is run by another primal beast—although he's out at the moment.
Indala: Next time you stop by, you should have a cup of his coffee and give him your honest opinion. I think he'd love to hear it.
Tsukuyomi: I didn't expect to hear that a primal beast is running a business. The Sky Realm has advanced more than I thought.
Tsukuyomi: None of the things Sankara and her descendants shared contained such information.
Vyrn: Hehe, is that so? Maybe we can help find you something of your own to do. Worth a shot, at least!
Tsukuyomi: I have a few questions.
Lyria: Feel free to ask whatever you want!
Tsukuyomi: To survive in this realm, do primal beasts need to have a clear goal to pursue?
Tsukuyomi: Whose orders do I follow, now that there's no war? Will the Thirteen Buddhas tell me what to do?
Lyria: Well, um... Those are pretty good questions...
With a kind smile, Lyria takes Tsukuyomi's hands into her own and gives them a squeeze.
Lyria: The world is large and filled with so many fun and surprising things—like tasty food...
Lyria: There're all sorts of adventures that you have to experience yourself for you to really understand what I mean.
Lyria: And I want you to, so you'd know the kind of happiness that makes you feel warm and bubbly inside.
Lyria: It'd be even better if we experience them together. What do you say?
Tsukuyomi: I'm not sure what all of that means, but I'm curious to learn.
Vyrn: You hear that, Lyria? She's in!
Lyria: Yay!
Indala: In that case, you'll need to learn some basic rules before you venture outside.
Tsukuyomi: If you're referring to common knowledge, Sankara already taught me.
Indala: Is that so? Then you should be equipped to handle day-to-day activities...
Tsukuyomi: She gave me a thorough explanation on the necessities of mortal life, which center around food, clothing, and shelter.
Tsukuyomi: I understand how to use eating utensils, prepare ingredients, cook meals, wash clothes, mend holes, clean using the correct household items...
Tsukuyomi: I was also taught the importance of trading rupies for items, and to never forget my change.
Vyrn: Wow... She really drilled a whole bunch into you.
Tsukuyomi: And aside from vinegar, she also taught me that salt is also effective in getting rid of stubborn stains.
Vyrn: Now we're diving into trivia-level territory!
Indala: That's excellent to hear, but how much did she teach you about work?
Indala: Our world revolves around labor. It is through working that we are able to live happy, full lives.
Indala: Dreams are discovered through toil. So is fulfillment, especially when your efforts prove beneficial to others.
Indala: Without hard work, mortals would have long succumbed to every hardship and fallen into the pits of despair!
Vyrn: Uh, that's going a bit far, don't you think? But maybe you have a point somewhere in there...
Indala: Tsukuyomi, I'd love to show you the joys of devoting yourself to a task!
Tsukuyomi: Work... I know that countless kinds of occupations exist for skydwellers.
Tsukuyomi: But I've never seen any in person, so I wouldn't know where to start.
Indala: Hm, is that right...
Tsukuyomi: I also understand that skydwellers spend their lives in pursuit of happiness.
Tsukuyomi: But what is happiness? Could I really make someone else happy through my own actions?
Lyria: Those are some difficult questions. Happiness is different for everyone, after all...
Indala: Let's take things one step at a time. I sense that Tsukuyomi has the potential to be a fantastic worker, so there's nothing to worry about as far as that's concerned.
Vyrn: Hold on, what're you trying to get her to do?
Indala: The perfect job for her exists out there, I'm certain of it—like being my assistant, for example.
Vyrn: Oh, come on...
Indala: In any case, we can start by having her accompany the crew on requests.
- We'd love to work with you!
- Are you sure you're fine with this?
Choose: We'd love to work with you!Tsukuyomi: Very well.
Vyrn: Huh. That was easy.
Choose: Are you sure you're fine with this?Tsukuyomi: Of course, baby.
Vyrn: You really like dropping those lines, huh.
Continue 1Tsukuyomi: I understand why you have taken me into your care, and find no reason to refuse.
Tsukuyomi: I also understand that there are a plenitude of rules to follow in the Sky Realm.
Tsukuyomi: And I also know that each household has their own—Sankara and her descendants taught me that.
Tsukuyomi: During my trial, the importance of following the laws of this realm was impressed heavily upon me, so I will strive to do so.
Indala: It seems like we won't have any concerns about your basic knowledge or your morals, at least.
Indala: In that case... It's time for a test!
Comprehending the Incomprehensible: Scene 2
Passing the shopping simulation with flying colors, Tsukuyomi is brought to town to give the real thing a try. She successfully purchases fruit from a shop and, upon being praised by (Captain) and the others, realizes how nice it is to have her efforts be recognized. However, the warm moment is interrupted by the cawing of crows.
Lyria: Click... Creak... Rattle, rattle!
Oh, but just so you know, sometimes the doors have bells too!
Lyria: Excuse me!
Indala: Welcome. Are you two girls out on an errand? Take your time and look around.
Tsukuyomi: What is going on?
Confused, Tsukuyomi is led by Lyria into a random room aboard the Grandcypher.
Inside, Indala watches over a spread of fruits and vegetables, borrowed from the ship's kitchen.
Vyrn: Huh. For something you just threw together, it looks way more like a shop than I thought it would.
Indala: You there, the flying one. We don't appreciate window-shoppers here.
The Flying One: Wait, you mean I'm one of the customers too?
Tsukuyomi: A customer... Does this mean you're running a business, like the cafe run by the primal beast you mentioned?
Lyria: We wanted to make sure you wouldn't have trouble shopping in town, so this is... Um...
Indala: A simulation. We're playing pretend, essentially.
Lyria: Right, that! I hope you don't mind!
Tsukuyomi: A simulation...
Vyrn: Do you think you can handle it?
Tsukuyomi: I have experience. One of Sankara's descendants walked us through it.
Tsukuyomi: But Amaterasu was much better at it than me.
Vyrn: Somehow that's not surprising to hear...
Tsukuyomi: Is this supposed to be a test?
Indala: You won't be graded, if that's what you're worried about. We just want to see what you know.
Tsukuyomi: To summarize, you would like me to use the knowledge I possess to shop in the Sky Realm.
Tsukuyomi: Skydwellers are truly incomprehensible creatures. But all right, I understand what to do.
Taking a look at the fruits, Tsukuyomi frowns.
Tsukuyomi: However, it would be so much easier to pick fresh fruit by yourself.
Indala: There are places where they don't grow in the wild. You'll have no choice but to purchase cultivated products.
Lyria: Plus some stores sell tasty homemade sweets too. You can't get those anywhere else.
Tsukuyomi: Very well. I'll give this a try.
Tsukuyomi: I should know enough to handle a normal exchange without any problems.
Vyrn: Sounds like you'll be just fine, if you're gonna roll with the punches like that.
Tsukuyomi: Click... Creak... Rattle, rattle!
Oh, but just so you know, sometimes the doors have bells too!
Lyria: You don't have to say that part!
Vyrn: Maybe I spoke too soon.
Tsukuyomi: I'm sorry.
Indala: Welcome.
Tsukuyomi: The purchasing process I understand, but I'm not sure what items would constitute a normal purchase.
Lyria: By the way, you're free to eat whatever you decide to buy!
Tsukuyomi: In that case, it might be best to choose a fruit ripe enough to eat. Let's see...
Browsing through the selection laid out on the table, Tsukuyomi pauses when she comes upon a peach.
Tsukuyomi: I'll have this, please.
Lyria: A peach! You had one of these back in Dharma!
Tsukuyomi: Yes. I still remember how good it was.
Indala: One peach then. Is there anything else you're looking for?
Tsukuyomi: Anything else...
Vyrn: An apple. Get an apple. You want an apple...
Indala: Please don't harass the other customers!
The Flying One: Eep!
Tsukuyomi: An apple... Okay, I'll have one apple.
Indala: She fell for it, hook, line, and sinker...
Indala: Thank you for choosing our store. For one apple and one peach, that'll come to...
Tsukuyomi gathers the correct amount of rupies and pays for her purchase without a hitch.
Lyria: Wow, Tsukuyomi! You did so good, I can't believe that was your first time!
Indala: A perfect performance. But let's review. Was there anything you didn't understand?
Tsukuyomi: Is it true that you're not allowed to touch the food on display until you've finished paying?
Indala: Generally, yes, though some areas have their own customs that are different.
Vyrn: Did Sankara teach you that too? Kinda impressive that you remember this much!
Tsukuyomi: Is there anything else that I should know?
Indala: No, that about covers everything. Thanks for humoring us. Go ahead and enjoy that peach with Lyria.
Not needing to be told twice, Tsukuyomi and Lyria split the fruit in half.
As expected, the ripe flesh is sweet as can be, yet Tsukuyomi makes a face.
Tsukuyomi: ...
Lyria: Mm, this is great! But...
Lyria: I bet it'd taste even better if Amaterasu was here!
Amaterasu: Tsukuyomi!
Tsukuyomi: That's probably true.
Tsukuyomi mulls over Lyria's comment as she finishes the rest of her peach. Just as she takes her last bite, Indala walks over.
Indala: Tsukuyomi, it's time to put what you've learned into practice!
Tsukuyomi: ...?
The Divine General looks back over at (Captain), the pair of them having agreed that Tsukuyomi is now ready for her next step.
Tsukuyomi: So this is what a community of skydwellers looks like...
Tsukuyomi: I've never seen this many people gathered in one place before.
Following Indala's and (Captain)'s lead, Tsukuyomi now finds herself in a nearby town.
Indala: A shopping street like this is always extremely crowded. Take care not to get separated.
Lyria: Tsukuyomi, we should hold hands again, just in case!
Tsukuyomi: Very well.
Indala: Tsukuyomi, you should take the lead and explore wherever you want to go.
Indala: The rest of us will hang back and keep an eye out to make sure you don't stray too far.
Tsukuyomi: Where I want to go...
Tsukuyomi gazes at what seems like an endless row of stores, before pausing on one in particular.
Tsukuyomi: (The objects lining the storefronts should be what they are selling...)
Tsukuyomi: ...
Indala: She's not moving... Maybe we were too hasty with the hands-on training.
Lyria: Hmm, it might be a little overwhelming? There's probably a lot of things that she's never seen before.
Tsukuyomi: That store over there...
Shop Owner's Voice: Thanks for stopping by!
Tsukuyomi: I bought strawberries and bananas this time.
Lyria: You did it, Tsukuyomi! Congrats on a job well done!
For her first stop, Tsukuyomi has picked a grocery offering a familiar assortment of fruit and vegetables.
Lyria: You even managed to give the grocer a proper greeting! I'm so proud of you!
Indala: Indeed. That was extremely impressive for your first time.
Tsukuyomi: ...
Tsukuyomi: (Lyria, Indala, and the others praise me whenever I accomplish a task.)
Tsukuyomi: (Just like Sankara did...)
Tsukuyomi: ...?
Vyrn: Something wrong?
Tsukuyomi: Not exactly... I just experienced an occurrence that has happened to me repeatedly ever since I met Sankara.
Tsukuyomi: I will admit, it has been some time since I've felt this warmth in my chest...
Lyria: Hehehe... Seeing you happy makes me happy too!
Tsukuyomi: ...
Right as Tsukuyomi quietly ponders the changes she's going through, a sudden noise disturbs the peace.
Vyrn: Whoa!
Vyrn: Didn't expect crows to show up so close.
Shop Owner: Really? Again? I can't believe this.
Comprehending the Incomprehensible: Scene 3
Seeing that the shop owner is troubled by the crows, Tsukuyomi frightens them away. The crew warns her to be careful, as she could potentially terrify mortals with her actions. Learning new expressions such as puppy dog eyes, Tsukuyomi marvels at how much there is to discover in the Sky Realm. She resolves to learn as much as she can in order to share her knowledge with Amaterasu someday.
Vyrn: Something wrong, ma'am?
Shop Owner: It's these crows. They came not too long ago and made this town their new home.
Indala: I can see why that would be a problem, given how they make a mess of the garbage.
Shop Owner: There's that, plus...
Oh, don't you dare! Shoo! Get out of here!
Vyrn: Holy smokes, they totally just went for the fruits in your shop!
Having gotten a taste of success already, the crows simply wait nearby before swooping in for another attempt.
Tsukuyomi: Skydwellers are troubled by even small animals.
Tsukuyomi: If they're truly a problem, then I can lend my assistance.
Tsukuyomi stares emotionlessly at the crows, her lips drawn into a thin line.
Vyrn: Wha... They just flew away?
Indala: Seems like Tsukuyomi scared them off somehow.
Tsukuyomi: I simply made sure they knew this was my territory. They won't come back.
Shop Owner: What's this? Did you folks drive those menaces away?
Turning around, Tsukuyomi looks the shop owner directly in the eyes.
Tsukuyomi: Of course, baby. Did I need a reason to?
Tsukuyomi: ...
Shop Owner: Well, I'll be... You're really something! Thanks for the help!
Tsukuyomi: ...!
Lyria: Munch... Mm! So sweet!
Tsukuyomi: Munch...
After being rewarded with a free pack of strawberries from the shop owner, the group snacks together on the side of the road.
Indala: I didn't think we'd be compensated for that... This is all thanks to you, Tsukuyomi.
Lyria: Yeah! Thanks, Tsukuyomi!
Tsukuyomi: The sweetness is sometimes interrupted by a fresh acidity that changes the flavor...
Vyrn: We've lost her.
Indala: Is it just me... or does Tsukuyomi not hesitate whatsoever when it comes to helping those in need?
Lyria: Now that you mention it, it's like her body reacts on its own.
Vyrn: Even with all the primal beasts we've met, we don't really see that sort of instinct.
Indala: We can likely attribute this to the influence of Divine Cat Sankara. Without her, I doubt Tsukuyomi would be out here, walking free 500 years later.
Indala: However... Tsukuyomi. Please remember that most skydwellers view primal beasts as a threat.
Indala: Drawing attention to yourself like earlier can cause more harm than good. You must always be vigilant of your surroundings.
Vyrn: No turning day into night out of nowhere either!
Tsukuyomi: I understand. May I have another strawberry?
Vyrn: Uh... Did any of that really get through to you?
Lyria: Ahaha... The strawberries have more of her attention right now.
Indala: Sigh... We'll have to give her another lesson once we return home.
Tsukuyomi: Amaterasu would love this sweet flavor...
In that moment, the sound of a wailing child reaches Tsukuyomi's ears.
Child's Voice: Waaah!
Tsukuyomi: I can hear someone crying.
Child: I wanna eat cake! Gimme cake! Cake now!
Woman: What have I told you about crying out on the street? Goodness, if you won't calm down otherwise, I suppose I have no choice...
Looking toward the source of the disturbance, Tsukuyomi watches the woman and child enter a nearby store.
Tsukuyomi: What is a "cake"?
Lyria: It's a sweet and fluffy treat—I absolutely love them!
Tsukuyomi: I'm interested in how it tastes.
Tsukuyomi: ...!
Tsukuyomi: I am unable to generate tears.
Lyria: Is something wrong, Tsukuyomi?
Tsukuyomi: What do I have to do in order to cry?
Vyrn: Huh?
Lyria: You want to cry?
Indala: What odd behavior for a primal beast... May we ask why you wish to shed tears?
In contrast to the crew's concerned expressions, Tsukuyomi tilts her head in confusion and calmly begins to explain.
Tsukuyomi: I believed that my demands would be met if I produced tears like that child did.
Tsukuyomi: Sankara's descendants behaved similarly at times. I had forgotten until now, as they didn't teach me how to.
Vyrn: So this is all just for cake... You really are food motivated.
Indala: I have never met a primal beast like her before... Though I suppose it makes sense, given how she was locked up in Dharma all this time.
Indala: Be that as it may, she is the first of her kind permitted to leave the confines of the labyrinth.
Indala: The Keeper of Medicine's decision to leave her in (Captain)'s care was definitely the right call.
Indala: I'll record today's events and send a copy to Skydome Temple.
Tsukuyomi: I never realized I didn't possess the ability to cry. I'll have to remove it from my list of objectives.
Indala: Forget about crying...
Indala: If you want (Captain) to do something, you'll have more success by using a deep, longing look.
Tsukuyomi: So I have to stare?
Tsukuyomi: Won't the captain run away?
Vyrn: As if. (Captain)'s not a crow.
- Caw...
Choose: Caw...Vyrn: What're you playing along for?
Tsukuyomi: Very well.
Tsukuyomi: (Captain)... I would like to try eating cake.
- Caw... Okay!
Choose: Caw... Okay!Vyrn: Fine... Sure. Why not.
Indala: Hehe... We should celebrate Tsukuyomi's good deed of the day. Let's all have some cake.
Lyria: Yay! Thanks, Tsukuyomi!
Lyria: We can get all different kinds and share!
Vyrn: I can't believe she learned how to make puppy dog eyes today...
Tsukuyomi: So those are called "puppy dog eyes."
Tsukuyomi: That is not the only thing I have learned, despite my short amount of time outside.
Tsukuyomi: Such an abundance of information would have been impossible to acquire inside of Dharma.
Tsukuyomi: I'll have to teach it all to Amaterasu someday too...
Lyria: Huh? What was that about Amaterasu?
Tsukuyomi: No, it's nothing... I simply realized I might have found something I want to do.
Lyria: Oh! What is it? Tell us!
Tsukuyomi: I can't speak about it at the moment, as the idea is still under review.
Lyria: Aww!
Slowly, but surely, the primal beast Tsukuyomi begins to change.
The wealth of knowledge she acquires every day is near overwhelming, but she resolves to commit it all to memory.
That way, she'll be ready to pass it on to Amaterasu when they reunite.
Sweet, Spicy, and Sometimes Wasabi
A sampling of Sato's wasabi leaves Tsukuyomi curious, leading the two to promise to embark on many more journeys together in search of curious flavors.
One day in the Grandcypher's galley, Sato is kicking back with a wooden spoon in her mouth, feeling on top of the world.
Sato: Man, this hits different... That sharp kick running up the nose—can't get enough of it.
Sato: Hehe, one more bite... Wasabi after a hard day's work? Peak reward-time.
Sato: Wait, only three bites left? No, two? Aw, this sucks.
Sato: Wait... I can space it out into five micro-bites... Yeah.
As Sato stares down the bottom of the jar, someone watches her from behind a shelf.
Tsukuyomi: ...
Sato: What's up? Oh, don't tell me you were staring 'cause I'm too pretty?
Tsukuyomi: No. That's not why I was staring.
Sato: Aw, and here I thought my charm was lethal. So? Something on your mind?
Tsukuyomi: I'm here because (Captain) asked me to clean the dining hall.
Tsukuyomi: Then I saw you taking a soft green substance out of that jar and eating it with great delight.
Tsukuyomi: I was curious what that green substance might taste like, so I observed in silence.
Sato: Whoa, you're sharp to be interested in this.
Sato: This right here's wasabi—the best food in the skies. But, yeah, not everyone can handle it.
Tsukuyomi: Is it sweeter and more delicious than peaches... or roasted sweet potatoes?
Sato: Sweet? Nah, not even close. More like the opposite.
Tsukuyomi: ...?
Then what kind of flavor is it?
Tsukuyomi: You said earlier that a "kick" ran up your nose. I am curious about this "kick" that runs up noses.
Sato: How do I put this... It's like the kind of taste that blasts away your tiredness and everything else. That sharp sting gets addictive, y'know?
Tsukuyomi: I see... I understand "spicy" as a flavor that causes stimulation.
Tsukuyomi: When Sankara ate a spicy fruit once, she flailed her limbs and rolled around on the ground.
Sato: Yeah? That must've been some kinda brutal chili pepper.
Sato: Wouldn't be me, though. I'm Team Spice all the way; chili, wasabi—bring it on.
Tsukuyomi: I see... So among skydwellers, there are those with a resistance to spice, collectively known as Team Spice?
Sato: Eh? Nah, not resistance—it's more of a personal preference, you know?
Sato: And if we're talkin' preferences, then you're definitely Team Sweet, yeah?
Sato: Hehe. I mean, you like peaches and roasted sweet potatoes, right? That makes you pure Team Sweet, no doubt.
Tsukuyomi: I see. So I am Team Sweet.
Sato: But me? I wanna make Team Spice the next big thing.
Tsukuyomi: Then your wish is... to eradicate Team Sweet?
Sato: Whoa, there! That's one way to put it but let's hold back on the war declaration, okay?
Tsukuyomi: I would not wish for skydwellers to fight one another.
Sato: Heh. You're a good kid. Here—have some of my premium wasabi.
Tsukuyomi: But you have very little left. Are you sure?
Sato: Of course! If you end up liking it, that's another recruit for Team Spice—a win-win for me.
Sato: And in that case, we could make a Team Spice Club. I'll be the leader—Ninja Sato the Brilliant Beauty and Fearless Spice Master!
Tsukuyomi: ...
Sato: All right, since this is your first time and all—just a tiny taste, 'kay?
Tsukuyomi: Understood. Thank you.
Tsukuyomi dips her tongue into the dab of wasabi.
Tsukuyomi: ...!
Sato: Well?
Tsukuyomi: Ah! Th-this is... a new sensation...
Sato: Haha, maybe a bit strong for your first time? Here, have some tea.
Tsukuyomi drinks the tea Sato offers and lets out a slow breath.
Tsukuyomi: Thank you. I feel calmer now.
Tsukuyomi: That soft, melting texture in my mouth—it was almost like a sweet peach.
Tsukuyomi: But the taste itself was far from sweet.
Tsukuyomi: And then, this strange feeling, like thorns running through my nose...
Sato: Haha, yeah, that's the difference. A chili's spiciness is one thing, but the kick you get from wasabi is something else entirely.
Tsukuyomi: Ah, so this is the "kick"... If it is neither sweet nor spicy, then what flavor is it?
Sato: Hmm? Uh... wasabi flavor?
Tsukuyomi: I see... Wasabi flavor.
Tsukuyomi: Ah... The taste surprised me, but it was not unpleasant.
Tsukuyomi: In fact... I might like to try it again.
Sato: Nice, you've got potential. Oh—by the way, I never got your name.
Tsukuyomi: I am Tsukuyomi, a primal beast who came out of Dharma.
Sato: I'm Ninja Sato the Brilliant Beauty, but call me Satty.
Tsukuyomi: A Brilliant Beauty Ninja... As with wasabi, this is a new name to my ears.
Sato: Yeah, guess I'm still not famous enough yet. But it's an important title, so remember it, okay?
Tsukuyomi: Understood. Ninja Satty the Brilliant Beauty.
Tsukuyomi: Tell me, do all Brilliant Beauty Ninjas in the skies carry wasabi with them?
Sato: Hmm, dunno. It's not exactly trail rations, so probably not your average ninja thing.
Sato: But soon I'll be a legendary ninja known across the skies, right?
Sato: So naturally, the elite ninjas will all start carrying wasabi too. Total trend in the making.
Tsukuyomi: I see. So by carrying wasabi, a Brilliant Beauty Ninja shapes common sense itself.
Tsukuyomi: Thank you. It's always nice to learn new things about the Sky Realm.
Sato: Love it. All right, Tsu-tsu—looking forward to hanging out more.
Tsukuyomi: Um... Tsu-tsu?
Sato: Your nickname! Cute, huh?
Tsukuyomi: Understood. From now on, I am Tsu-tsu to you.
Tsukuyomi: Then, as thanks for teaching me about wasabi flavor, is there anything I can do for you?
Sato: Yeah. Next time we stop at an island, come shopping with me. Gotta restock my wasabi supply, or I'm toast.
Tsukuyomi: Understood. Shopping is within my capabilities.
Sato: We'd be going for fun, not as an errand. We'll grab wasabi and something sweet for you too.
Tsukuyomi: Will there be peaches?
Sato: Hmm, probably. If not, we'll keep looking till we find some.
Tsukuyomi: ...!
Sweet, juicy peach babies... I'm looking forward to it.
Sato: Heh, deal. Oh, and we can try extra-spicy manju too—highly recommended.
Sato continues to include Tsukuyomi in her flavor adventures.
In time, stories about Tsukuyomi's newfound talent for food critique begin circulating on the Grandcypher.
