Family Time
After Walfrid relinquishes the title of Blue Knight to Lecia at the investiture ceremony, he leaves on a solo journey and happens across a picture book—the same one he gifted Lecia when she was little. He thinks back on the days he spent with his family, and on how they encouraged him to take up the responsibilities of the Blue Knight.
The Seven Luminary Knights.
These knights were originally comprised of skydwellers appointed to each oversee their designated skydoms during the Astrals' occupancy of the Sky Realm.
Now, the knights continue their work under Istavion Kingdom, answering to the True King's command.
Among them is Walfrid, who served as the Blue Knight.
An investiture ceremony was planned to take place in order for him to pass on the role to his daughter Lecia.
However, their plans were interrupted by an attempted invasion from the Astrals, who had been observing the skydoms up until then.
Once the threat was eliminated, the ceremony resumed and Lecia was officially appointed as the Blue Knight.
Having seen the ceremony through, Walfrid departed on a solo journey to start a new life for himself.
Arriving at a town, Walfrid wanders down its streets, gazing around at the quiet scenery.
Walfrid: (It's been a long time since I've taken a relaxing walk like this.)
Walfrid: (Looking back, I've spent every single day for the past fifteen years putting my all into fulfilling my duty.)
Walfrid: (Now that I've been liberated from my responsibilities, I'm surprised to find such peace within myself. Like a pond without a single ripple.)
Walfrid: (I suppose I harbored more pressure than I thought.)
Walfrid: The smells from town, the sound of the wind, the voices of people... It's strange how everything feels so novel to me.
Walfrid continues walking until he stops in front of a bookstore.
Walfrid: (Ah, that's right. Perhaps I should find a book to read for when I sail to the next island.)
Walfrid: Hm? Is this...
One particular children's picture book catches his eye.
Walfrid: This takes me back... I gave Lecia this very book when she was little.
Walfrid: I'd just taken on the mantle of Blue Knight at the time, and wasn't sure how my relationship with Lecia would become.
Approximately fifteen years ago...
Walfrid was sailing with (Captain)'s father as a part of his crew.
Gallanth: Sorry... I've already decided. The journey ends here—we're disbanding the crew.
Respecting Gallanth's wish to keep his family's troubles to himself, Walfrid had accepted his friend's decision.
Walfrid: I guess you only saw Rein and Vyrn as your family.
Walfrid: All right. If that's what you want, then I'll return to my family too.
Walfrid: On one condition—this ship comes with me. From here on, the Grandsleuth is mine.
Sensing this would be their last farewell, Walfrid concluded his journey with Gallanth and company.
After that, Walfrid delivered the Grandsleuth to Noa before returning to his hometown.
Walfrid: Six years... I've been away from home for far too long.
Walfrid: (That means Lecia's six years old already. She was just a baby when I last saw her...)
Walfrid: (This will be my first time meeting my daughter since she's learned to think for herself. How will she see her father?)
Walfrid: ...
Walfrid: Well, I won't know until it happens. I should prepare myself.
Taking a deep breath, Walfrid reaches out for the handle of his front door.
Walfrid: I'm home.
Lecia's Mother: Oh! Welcome home.
Walfrid: It's been a while. Have you been holding up all right?
Lecia's Mother: Well enough. You certainly look a lot tougher since the last time I saw you.
Lecia's Mother: Come on out, Lecia. This here is your father.
Young Lecia: ...
Walfrid: ...
Lecia's Mother: Come now, don't just stand there. You need to say something too.
Walfrid: A-ah... right.
Hello, Lecia. I'm your father. We've met once before, when you were still just a baby...
Hello, Lecia. I'm your father. We've met once before, when you were still just a baby...
Young Lecia: ...
Lecia's Mother: Oh, Lecia.
You too, dear. Of course she's going to run away if you look at her with such a scary face.
You too, dear. Of course she's going to run away if you look at her with such a scary face.
Walfrid: Wh-what am I supposed to do? I have no idea how I should talk to my own child...
Lecia's Mother: I see even the future Blue Knight falters in front of his daughter.
Walfrid: Haha... That I do.
Lecia's Mother: ...
From that day onward, Walfrid did his best to make up for the time he had spent away from his daughter.
Walfrid: What're your favorite things to eat, Lecia?
Young Lecia: Hmm, I like hamburger steak! And omurice!
Walfrid: Is that right? You know, hamburger steak and omurice are some of my favorites too.
Young Lecia: Papa! I want a shoulder ride! Please!
Walfrid: Right away.
Young Lecia: Ehehe, it's so high up here! Thanks, Papa!
Despite his hesitation, Walfrid showers Lecia with affection, doing his best to build a relationship with his precious daughter.
Several months after Walfrid's return home.
Walfrid: I'm back, Lecia.
Young Lecia: Welcome home, Papa!
Young Lecia: Huh? Is that a picture book?
Walfrid: That's right. I heard this is a popular book these days, so I brought one back for you.
Walfrid: It's about a girl who goes on an adventure. How about we read it together tonight?
Young Lecia: An adventure...
But contrary to Walfrid's expectations, Lecia's expression is clouded when she takes the book.
Walfrid: You... don't like it?
Young Lecia: I want to hear about Papa's adventures.
Walfrid: Mine?
Young Lecia: You've been on a lot of adventures, right?
Young Lecia: Mama told me that you're really brave and strong! I want to hear your stories!
Walfrid: (Brave and strong... Is that how my wife has been describing me?)
Walfrid: (She must've wanted to ensure that Lecia doesn't forget about her father.)
Walfrid: (It's all thanks to my wife that Lecia's welcomed me back so warmly.)
Walfrid: My stories, huh? Well, I've got a lot of those.
Walfrid: I have one about defending a town from bandits, another one about fighting a dragon in the mountains... and many, many more.
Young Lecia: Wow! I want to hear all about them!
Unable to resist Lecia's sparkling eyes, Walfrid begins telling his daughter of his grand adventures up until now, filled with gesture and flourish.
Young Lecia: Whoa! And then? What did you do?
Walfrid: Haha. I did my best to stand up against the bad guy, all on my own...
Walfrid: (Ah, such an innocent smile. I must protect this smile at all costs...)
That is when Walfrid makes the biggest decision of his entire life.
Young Lecia: Zzz...
Lecia's Mother: Oh my. She's fast asleep.
Walfrid: She got herself quite excited today, after all. She seems to be really enjoying my stories.
Walfrid: I've made you carry so many burdens while I was occupied with my traveling...
Walfrid: I'm glad I was able to spend time with Lecia as father and daughter these past few months... so I hate to leave her again.
Lecia's Mother: Again... So you mean...
Walfrid: Yes. I will take on the name of Blue Knight.
Walfrid: As you know, the Blue Knight has been passed down my family line for generations. However... I'm not taking on the role out of obligation.
Walfrid: I need to change the Istavion Kingdom from within. I need to protect you and Lecia. And I have to protect the peace of the Sky Realm.
Walfrid: I have decided to accept the responsibilities of the Blue Knight and stand at the front lines myself.
Lecia's Mother: I see... So you've finally made your decision.
Walfrid: Finally? You mean... you knew I was wavering all this time?
Lecia's Mother: I didn't know what exactly it was. But I saw you were thinking about something the moment you came home.
Lecia's Mother: I knew there was something aside from Lecia that you were wavering about.
Walfrid: I see. You always see through me, don't you?
Walfrid: I've made my decision, but not without fear. Still, I've chosen to take a step forward.
Walfrid: Things are going to get busy again.
Soon after that, Walfrid takes on the name of Blue Knight under the True King's command.
He embarks on a new life, not as Walfrid, but as one of the Luminary Knights.
Walfrid: (Despite it being fifteen years ago, I remember it as if it were yesterday.)
Walfrid: (In the end, I never did read that picture book to her.)
Bookstore Clerk: Hello, mister. Are you interested in that picture book?
Bookstore Clerk: It's from a while ago, but still a very popular pick. Why don't you pick up a copy for your child?
Walfrid: Unfortunately, my daughter is no longer at an age where she'd appreciate picture books from me.
Walfrid: Could you recommend me a book instead? I'd like something to read on my travels.
Walfrid settles on a book suggested to him and leaves the store with his new purchase.
Soaking in the nostalgia of distant memories, Walfrid continues his walk through town, feeling strangely content.
Between Justice and Order
Walfrid reflects on his time as the Blue Knight and captain of the Crew of Enforcers. About six years into his role, he had been summoned by the True King. The king informed him of plans to eliminate potential rebels, as he had many times already, and commanded Walfrid not to interfere. At the time, Walfrid had decided to obey for the sake of maintaining order, but found himself questioning his own choice after.
Leaving the bookstore behind, Walfrid decides to stop by a cafe next.
He takes a sip of coffee and sighs contently, soaking in the quiet atmosphere.
Walfrid: Delicious.
Walfrid: (When was the last time I've sat down for a coffee like this? Though, the overly bitter coffee my subordinate always brewed wasn't half-bad either.)
Walfrid: (It's finally dawning on me that I no longer hold any status.)
He reflects on his days as the Blue Knight and the captain of the Crew of Enforcers.
He had fully exercised his resourcefulness and valor, fulfilling his duty of upholding order throughout the skies.
But when Lecia asked him about what it means to be the Blue Knight the other day...
Walfrid: The Seven Luminary Knights originated as one measure the Astrals devised during their occupation of the skies. It was never a pure and virtuous organization to begin with.
Walfrid: Later, the True King Tau'luk chose to sacrifice everything for the coming war with the Otherworld.
Walfrid: The same applied to the Luminary Knights who served under his banner.
Walfrid: I myself harbored doubts about Tau'luk's actions and moved independently to uncover his true intentions...
Walfrid: But if asked whether I was able to save every life before me in the process, I would have to say no.
Lecia: Even you, Father...
Lecia: Is that true justice? Are we really unable to save everyone?
Walfrid: There is no justice accepted by all. Even so, those who stand for nothing can protect nothing.
Walfrid: What sort of expression did I have on my face when I answered her?
Bitter thoughts start to cross Walfrid's mind.
Vivid memories surface, of the times he was forced to overlook justice—all for the sake of prioritizing order.
It was about six years after succeeding the title of Blue Knight and captain of the Crew of Enforcers.
Walfrid: Pardon my intrusion, Your Majesty.
True King: You've had a long journey.
Walfrid: I am at your command. It is to my knowledge that there was a matter on which you wished to speak with me.
True King: Yes. In three days' time, there will be a slight surge of activity in Istavion.
True King: But no intervention from the Crew of Enforcers will be tolerated—no matter the circumstance.
Walfrid: I'm afraid I do not understand. A coming surge of activity... and you wish for the Enforcers to refrain from interfering?
Walfrid: Are you inferring that a matter which would normally require the Enforcers will arise?
True King: Correct. There are those hoping to instigate a rebellion lurking among our people, and they have been rather active as of late.
True King: The other day, they submitted a document to me detailing their concerns on freedom of thought and harmony in Istavion.
True King: If I allow them to continue doing as they please, they will certainly pose a great danger to us in due time. We must nip them in the bud.
Walfrid: Are you saying that you intend to slaughter them... simply for seeking freedom?
True King: Simply? Those who threaten the order of our nation deserve no mercy.
True King: Surely you are not denying the need for enforcement, as one who commands the Crew of Enforcers?
Walfrid: Not at all. Still, these people have yet to commit any crimes.
Walfrid: Unless you mean to say that their thoughts are crimes enough.
True King: It appears you misunderstand, Blue Knight.
True King: I control the thoughts and freedom of people and prioritize order so that the sky can keep its peace.
True King: This kingdom maintains harmony to allow both the weak and the strong to have equal rights to happiness. Those who rebel fail to understand this.
True King: Someday I plan to expand this fundamental structure across the rest of the skies. Only that will bring peace to the Sky Realm.
The True King explains how he has already eliminated potential rebels countless times in the past.
Walfrid: (Sacrifices must be made for the sake of justice. That's what he's trying to say.)
Walfrid: (I knew this man was dangerous since long before, but I genuinely feel it now.)
True King: Your face tells me you have something to say.
Walfrid: Is punishing the potential rebels truly the right course of action?
True King: You want to argue justice now? You should already know that there is no such thing as common justice for all.
True King: Or do you plan to expose and question the morals of my past actions?
Walfrid: I...
Walfrid: (It's clear that if I do such a thing, the kingdom will succumb to chaos.)
Walfrid: (What's more, the Otherworld has been gaining power. If Istavion were to fall into a dysfunctional state, it would inevitably lose its capability to resist external forces.)
Walfrid: (And when the Otherworld decides to invade, the entire skies will be thrown into a hopeless situation.)
Walfrid: (If that's the case, then I only have one choice.)
Walfrid: Very well. As Your Majesty commands, we will not concern ourselves with the present matter.
True King: A wise decision.
Walfrid: ...
Walfrid: (It's fine. If we can protect the skies in this way, then I shouldn't force my own sense of justice on matters.)
Walfrid: (Wanting the best of both sides is nothing but an unrealistic ideal. Yet...)
Walfrid: I do not believe the Istavion Kingdom is entirely devoid of justice.
Walfrid: At the same time, I cannot accept the kingdom's current methods as just.
Walfrid: That's why I have decided to change the Istavion Kingdom from within.
The words he once told Gallanth flash across his mind.
Walfrid: (If Gallanth saw me now... what would he think?)
Looking back on his journey up until now, Walfrid wonders if he is still walking a path he can take pride in.
Caught between justice and order, the Blue Knight can't help but feel a profound sense of loneliness as he mulls over his own decision.
Between Justice and Order: Scene 2
As captain, Walfrid had focused on straightening out disorder within the Crew of Enforcers. When he dismissed Gandharva from his role of fleet captain, a showdown between the two had ensued. Walfrid had easily won the battle, forcing Gandharva to leave the crew. Walfrid had contended with his inner conflict on his own, but found himself comforted when Monika showed understanding of the conflict as well.
Gandharva: No one will disturb us here, Captain. We can fight it out all we want.
Walfrid: ...
In the middle of a bleak wasteland, Walfrid and Gandharva stand facing each other.
Their showdown is the result of something that happened several days ago.
Walfrid: Gandharva. You know why I called you out here, don't you?
Gandharva: Because I crushed the gang that was making money by kidnapping innocent people. Isn't that right?
Gandharva: I initiated a plan that solved the problem for us. I don't suppose I could get a bonus for that?
Walfrid: I'm not here for your jokes.
Gandharva: Something wrong with what I did?
Walfrid: It's true that when I left the job to you, I said the use of force may be inevitable if they resist.
Walfrid: But I believe I also said that you cannot hurt them any more than necessary.
Walfrid: The criminals all suffered heavy injuries that left them on the verge of death. The principal offender remains unconscious even now.
Gandharva: They were awfully reluctant to obey, you know? I did my best.
Walfrid: With your talent, you should've been able to keep things under control without inflicting serious injury.
Gandharva: I didn't know you thought so highly of me, Captain. It's an honor.
Walfrid: That's precisely why I've always told you never to use your power for the sake of flaunting it.
Walfrid: I'll get to the point. Your foolish behavior disturbs our crew's discipline and can no longer be overlooked.
Walfrid: You are dismissed from your role as fleet captain.
Gandharva: What? Oh, come on. You can't be serious.
Walfrid: If you have excuses, let's hear them.
Gandharva: I mean, that lot deserved to die! You're telling me I have to give up being captain just 'cause I beat them to a bloody pulp?
Gandharva: Ahh, I get it now. You're scared of me, aren't you?
Gandharva: Having a competent guy like me close by poses a threat to your own position. That's why you're tossing me far, far away while you can!
Walfrid: I thought the discussion would end up like this. Tell me—how do you want me to dismiss you?
Gandharva: I'm not saying I want any—
Gandharva pauses mid-sentence before grinning.
Gandharva: Okay, how about this? If I lose to you, I'll do as you say.
Gandharva: So fight me!
Gandharva: I never liked that pretentious face of yours.
Gandharva: Being captain or the Blue Knight or whatever might make you sound like you're something, but do you actually have what it takes?
Gandharva: Bet you've gotten pretty rusty, especially these days.
Disorder among the Crew of Enforcers, including Gandharva's case, has become an increasing problem in recent years.
Walfrid realizes the increasing need to review the inner workings of the Enforcers in order to strengthen the crew for the future.
As a result, he has been spending more time on supporting from behind rather than on the front lines.
Gandharva: You hate the idea of control through force because you don't have the force.
Gandharva: All you do is throw out commands, but you can't even stand on the battlefield yourself.
Gandharva: Face it—that's who you are! Don't you get tired of lazing around?
While being well aware that Gandharva's words are nothing more but provocation, Walfrid finds himself unable to resist retorting.
Walfrid: Lazing around? Is that how you see it?
Gandharva: Yeah, it is! You've got no ambition these days!
Gandharva: Why don't you step down before your cover gets blown, huh? Hell, I'll dismiss you myself!
Walfrid: ...
Gandharva: Nothing to say for yourself? Guess I was right on the nose!
Walfrid: Do you think it's been an easy job leading the Crew of Enforcers?
Walfrid: Do you not see how heavy the duty of the Blue Knight is?
Walfrid: Do you really not understand anything?
Gandharva: ...!
Focusing his piercing eyes on Gandharva, Walfrid quietly unsheathes his sword.
Walfrid: You say that strength alone is the truth of this world. If that's the case, then I will use that very strength to show you just how much of a fool you are.
Gandharva: Hah! Finally getting serious? Good, I'm itching for a fight!
Gandharva: You're going down. Let me give you a taste of my power!
Walfrid: Hrh!
Gandharva: Guh!
Gandharva: D-damn it...
Walfrid: Stand up. You said you were going to win against me, didn't you? It's far from over.
Gandharva: There's no way you're this strong... Impossible! I don't belie—
Walfrid: I said stand up!
Gandharva: Erg!
Gandharva: Hraaah!
Gandharva: H-how... Why... couldn't I win?
Walfrid: The difference between our experiences is too big. No matter how hard you try, you won't be able to lay even a scratch on me.
Walfrid: I won't take your life. But never show your face in front of me again.
Gandharva: Damn it aaall!
Defeated, Gandharva is banished from the Crew of Enforcers and scurries away.
Walfrid: (Perhaps I went overboard... I'm not so righteous that I can lay judgment on others for their actions.)
Walfrid: I know you're there. The man is gone—you can come out now.
Looking somewhat apologetic, Monika steps out from the shade of some nearby rocks.
Walfrid: I'm sorry you had to witness that.
Monika: Not at all...
Walfrid: If it's to protect those precious to me, there are times when I put order before justice itself—even if they call me cold-hearted.
Walfrid: If you cannot agree with my ideals or beliefs, feel free to leave the crew at any time.
Monika: ...
Monika: For the last few years, I've had much respect for you and longed to be like you. I learned how difficult it is to protect others.
Monika: What is justice? What is order? I thought about how to find the answer to these, or whether there was an answer at all.
Monika: I want to learn more about all of this under you, Captain. That's how I truly feel.
Walfrid: I see. I'm fortunate to have such a dependable subordinate.
Walfrid: To be honest, my daughter Lecia is also aiming to join the Crew of Enforcers.
Walfrid: If she succeeds in her endeavor, I'd like you to take her under your wing. Would you be willing to accept the task?
Monika: Me? You wish to... entrust your daughter to me?
Walfrid: No need for you to answer right away. Please think about it.
Monika: Sir!
Comforted by the presence of his loyal subordinate, Walfrid feels the tight ropes around his heart unravel one by one.
Between Justice and Order: Scene 3
After much turmoil as the Blue Knight, Walfrid finally entrusts the role to Lecia and leaves on his new journey. Eager to hear about Lecia's experiences going forward, he decides to gift his daughter a picture book. He leaves the book and a letter with (Captain)'s crew, asking them to pass the gift on to Lecia, before setting out once more.
Time passes.
Walfrid's days as the Blue Knight and the captain of the Crew of Enforcers are filled with turmoil.
On some occasions, he would cross swords with the Eternals over a single town—keeping his personal thoughts on matters from showing.
Other times, he followed the True King's command and drove away armies of Otherworldly beings numbering over a thousand—all on his own.
Finally, a new era arrives for the position of Blue Knight.
In the waiting room after the investiture ceremony, Walfrid and Lecia spend some time alone as father and daughter for the first time in a while.
Walfrid: Once again, congratulations on your appointment as the Blue Knight.
Walfrid: You really have grown, Lecia.
Lecia: Thank you. My capabilities are still far from yours, but I will carry out my duty in my own way.
Lecia: Do you remember how you used to tell me stories from your travels?
Lecia: You were such a large figure in my life, so I have mixed feelings being compared to you...
Lecia: Did you feel that sense of confliction too, when Proculus asked about justice and order?
Lecia: If the concepts of justice and order are bound to shift and change, then we need to accept that reality from the start.
Lecia: Rather than clinging to a single cause or a single code, we should live while embracing change.
Lecia: I think that's what it means for people to pass judgment on each other, apart from any gods.
Proculus: So it's not that we were foolish, but that mankind itself will always be foolish?
Lecia: Regardless, I can't afford to stop or surrender.
Lecia: Now that I've calmed down, thinking back, I said something rather bold. What... do you think, Father?
Walfrid: What's wrong with that? On the contrary, that kind of a steady heart will be necessary for what's ahead.
Walfrid: I'm sure you're worried about the future. But your worry is proof that you understand the responsibility of your role.
Walfrid: I did not hand over the mantle of the Blue Knight because you're my daughter. It's because I saw the necessary qualifications in you.
Walfrid: I won't say too much. Walk your path as you see fit.
Walfrid: (It was all so fast in retrospect... So much has happened.)
Walfrid: (What sort of path will Lecia choose as the Blue Knight?)
Walfrid: (Ah, wait. That gives me an idea.)
Walfrid leaves the cafe and returns to the bookstore to buy a single picture book.
After that, he pays a visit to the Grandcypher and presents (Captain) and company with the book, along with a letter.
Walfrid: Please pass this on to Lecia the next time she visits your crew.
Vyrn: Sure, but wouldn't it make her happier if you gave it to her yourself?
Walfrid: She has a busy schedule with her new appointment as Blue Knight. I don't want to take up too much of her time.
Lyria: This picture book... It's blank inside. Is this what you want to give her?
Walfrid: Yes. She'll understand when she reads the letter.
Walfrid: I will be leaving on my solo journey once more, but if you ever require my assistance, I am at the ready.
Choose: That would be greatly appreciated.
Walfrid: No need for formalities. I'm nothing more than a traveler now, after all.
Choose: I have a feeling we'll meet again.
Walfrid: Haha, I do as well. First it was your father's crew, and now yours... This must be nothing short of fate.
Continue 1Walfrid: Until next time, (Captain).
The crew holds onto the book and letter from Walfrid, until one month later...
Lecia finally receives the items from the crew and retreats to her room to read the correspondence from her father.
Lecia: "This blank picture book is for you to depict your days as the Blue Knight."
Lecia: "Just as I told you of my journey when you were little, now I'd like you to tell me about yours."
Lecia: "I look forward to the day I can hear about your adventures."
Lecia: This is his way of giving me a gentle push. Thank you... I'll do my best, Father.
Walfrid: I wonder if she's read my letter yet.
Walfrid: As your father, I'll always be watching over you, Lecia.
A soft smile spreads across Walfrid's face as he envisions his daughter's boundless possibilities in the future.
He, too, takes a step down his new path, his heart as bright and clear as the blue skies above.
