Shoulder to Shoulder
Farrah is nowhere to be found on the ship. After hearing from Lyria and Vyrn that Farrah left the ship earlier, Juri comes to the conclusion that, based on her strange behavior in recent days, she must be struggling with a serious issue. He departs the ship in search of her, heading to Fehrtyl Island, where he's told she went to forage for food.
Juri: (She's not here...)
Juri: (Not here either...)
Juri: She's nowhere to be found!
Juri: Wh-where could she have disappeared to?
Juri: (Think, Juri, think...)
Juri: (Farrah hasn't been herself lately...)
Juri: (Maybe she was in lower spirits than I realized.)
Juri: (I kept asking her if everything was okay, and she said yes. She's not one to hide things, so I took her word for it...)
Juri: (What if she was worried about something... that she couldn't talk to me about?)
Juri: (She could be in real trouble right now, without anyone to turn to!)
Juri: If only I noticed sooner! I was so comedy-obsessed that I was blind to everything else!
Juri: I'm sorry for being a good-for-nothing laughingstock, Farrah!
Vyrn: You, uh... You're apologizing to the wall, y'know.
Lyria: If you're looking for Farrah, she's not on the ship right now. She'll be out for a little while.
Juri: She left the ship?
Juri: B-but why? Is she that determined to keep the matter to herself?
Lyria: U-um...
Juri: Wait for me, Farrah! I'm coming to save you!
Vyrn: H-hold it, Juri!
Far-Off Juri: Fear not for my safety! I swear I'll bring Farrah home!
Vyrn: Er, it's not that. I just wanted to make sure you knew where she went...
Far-Off Juri: ...!
Juri: Could... you please tell me her location?
Vyrn: Sure... She said she's headed for Fehrtyl Island, right, Lyria?
Lyria: Yeah! To forage for ingredients.
Juri: Fehrtyl Island? Understood! Thank you for the assistance!
Vyrn: Stop trying to run off! Were you listening? She's just going foraging! What're you so worried for?
Vyrn: Do you need her for something right now?
Juri: No! Katalina said her message wasn't urgent whatsoever!
Vyrn: Then can't you wait for her on the ship? We're gonna be docked at this port for a bit.
Juri: I cannot! I must search for her immediately!
Juri: The more I think about it, the more I realize how strange she's been acting lately... Something must be troubling her!
Juri: I can't believe I only realized this now! I'm a failure of a friend!
Juri: Ahhh!
Vyrn: And there he goes...
Taking advantage of the docked Grandcypher, Juri immediately departs the ship.
He finds a smaller ship to take him directly to Fehrtyl Island, where Farrah is said to have gone.
Juri: (The evening breeze feels nice... I can think a little clearer now.)
Juri: (In hindsight, I probably don't need to be chasing after her.)
Juri: (If she was truly in trouble, she could have asked (Captain) or Katalina for help.)
Juri: But... what if it's a matter she couldn't speak to them about either?
Juri: It falls to me to support her through her crisis! As her comrade in arms, I must!
Though the evening breeze momentarily cooled him off, Juri is once again fired up to aid Farrah.
Shoulder to Shoulder: Scene 2
Arriving at a village on Fehrtyl Island, Juri learns from the locals that Farrah came through earlier. She helped the locals with their animal problem and then left on a soul-searching journey. Juri, now more concerned than before, departs for Namvia, Farrah's new location.
Fehrtyl Island is known far and wide as being blessed with nature's bounty.
However, even a bountiful island still has its offseason.
Juri: (It's freezing!)
Juri: (I let the blood rush to my head and completely forgot that ascending a mountain during winter is a matter of life and death!)
Juri: (No sane person would be foraging for food in these conditions! Has Farrah lost her mind?)
Juri: Farrah, where are you?
Juri: ...
Juri turns his head every which way, listening for an answer, but only silence greets him.
Juri: No... I won't give up!
Juri: Where are you?
Juri: Farrah!
Past the trees, a distant rumbling reaches his ears.
Juri: What... was that?
The sound grows louder, until the very earth beneath Juri's feet begins to shake.
Juri: Don't tell me... Is this an avalanche?
Juri: Ahhhh!
Juri: Wheeze... That was... too close...
Barely escaping the kiss of death, Juri manages to arrive at the local village. A curious scent wafts through the street, catching his attention.
Juri: Is that hot pot? It smells good...
Village Woman: Now here's a face I haven't seen before. Curious time to swing by, traveler.
Juri: Good day, ma'am! My name is Juri Eckard, and I—
Village Woman: Oh, you're absolutely covered in snow! Have some hot food and warm yourself up!
Juri: P-pardon, but I wouldn't want to impose...
Village Woman: Don't you worry about that. Come on, before you catch a cold!
The woman leads Juri to a large gathering in the village center, where hot food is being distributed to all who approach.
Village Woman: There's enough to go around, so eat up! The soup's packed full of nutritious ingredients.
Juri: A-all right... Thank you.
As Juri takes a sip of the steaming soup, warmth spreads through his body.
Juri: This is delicious!
Village Woman: Glad to hear it. Feel free to have as much as you like.
Juri: Much appreciated. Did you make this? Curiously enough, the flavor is familiar to me.
Village Woman: No, no, a passing traveler cooked it up for us. Right, dear?
Village Man: Yep. Our food stores were running low, you see. Too dangerous to forage and hunt out there, since a lot of animals didn't manage to hibernate this year.
Village Man: Lucky for us, that traveler stopped by. As soon as she heard what was going on, she went and gave all the predators a pounding.
Juri: All by herself? What impressive strength!
Village Woman: When she returned, she even whipped up this soup for us...
Village Man: But for all her strength, the girl was a bit of a mess.
Village Woman: The contrast was adorable.
Village Woman: She came to forage in the mountains, but forgot it's the wrong time of year...
Village Woman: Let out the most amusing screech when she realized.
Juri: Mngh!
Village Woman: You all right? You'll choke if you eat too fast.
Juri: B-beg your pardon, but I think the traveler you ran into is the person I'm searching for. Do you know where she went?
Village Woman: She hopped aboard a messenger ship after she made the soup this morning.
Juri: Oh, thank goodness... She must be headed back home to our crew.
Village Man: I don't think so. That airship flew the opposite way she came in. Toward Namvia, if I heard right.
Juri: Namvia? But if she came here to forage, why would she head there instead?
Village Woman: Now that you mention it... She only made off with a few mountain herbs. Didn't seem like she was prepped to make a shopping trip.
Juri: How strange. I wonder what her actual goal could be.
As Juri ponders, a small figure runs up.
Village Boy: She said she was gonna go on a "soul-searching journey"!
Juri: She what?
Juri: (Farrah is always so laid-back and carefree! I've never seen her be introspective before!)
Juri: Something isn't right here.
Village Woman: Is... something the matter with her?
Juri: Perhaps. Thank you for treating me to the soup. I must chase after my friend, so if you'll excuse me.
Watching Juri dash into the distance, the villagers whisper to one another.
Village Woman: Isn't it normal for a girl her age to do a little wandering, though?
Village Man: I'd say so, yeah. The boy's being a little too overprotective.
Shoulder to Shoulder: Scene 3
Now on Namvia, Juri runs into Lauphit, the man he formed the comedy duo Fiery Soul with. According to him, Farrah spent a day working as a performer's assistant before leaving. He then encourages Juri to chase after her, telling him that she set off for Auguste.
Juri arrives in Namvia, a town in West Varia.
Though he is focused on finding Farrah, his presence inevitably draws the attention of Namvia's comedy-loving citizens.
Jolly Townsman: Hey! It's the other half of Fiery Soul!
Comedy Lover: Hoowee! You would've won the 23rd King of Manzai Awards if the whole thing hadn't been rigged!
Jolly Townsman: Where'd you go after the award ceremony, huh?
Juri: U-um, I'm sorry, but I'm really only here to search for my friend...
Comedy Lover: Hardy-har, already cracking jokes! Come on, we gotta give you a king's welcome! Up you go!
Jolly Townsman: Up you go! Wahoo!
Juri: W-wait, I didn't consent to this...
Ignoring Juri's protests, the enthusiastic townspeople lift him up into the air.
Juri: Please put me down!
Townspeople: Wahoo! Wahoo!
Comedy Lover: Can't wait to see what you've got up your sleeves today!
Jolly Townsman: Make sure you get along with your partner, you hear?
Juri: Uhhh... Where am I?
Set down in an unknown location, Juri takes in his surroundings.
Lauphit: Juri?
Juri: Lauphit?
Lauphit: Gosh darn, it really is you! Shouldn't you be at the end of the skies with your crew?
Lauphit: My humble little dressing room is the last place I expected to run into you!
Juri: Well, you see...
The time Juri and Lauphit spent as a comedy duo was brief, but it helped them form a bond of lasting friendship.
Knowing that Lauphit is someone he can trust, Juri shares the details of Farrah's strange behavior and her eventual disappearance.
Juri: And that's all I've got so far. Do you have any idea where she might be, since she supposedly headed for Namvia?
Lauphit: Er... So the thing is... Farrah was here... at least until this morning.
Juri: Until this morning? Does that mean...
Lauphit: Yeah, she's...
Juri: Not...
Lauphit: Not here anymore, nope.
Juri: I... see...
Lauphit: She was running around, asking about what being a performer's assistant was like.
Lauphit: So someone let her do a trial run for a day.
Lauphit: But her performer got assaulted by some good-for-nothings...
Juri: What? Did she get hurt?
Lauphit: Her? Nah, she gave them a pounding.
Juri: Oh...
Lauphit: Performer was so impressed that they offered her a job as a bodyguard.
Lauphit: She said she'd think about it, then headed off for another island.
Juri: I didn't see this coming... Do you know where she went?
Lauphit: Auguste, I think? Heard her say something about wantin' to try out some other jobs.
Juri: Auguste? What in the skies is she trying to accomplish...
Juri: She's always scolding me for being rash and never thinking ahead, but then she goes and does this!
Juri: How could she leave without a word, and for so many days too!
Juri: Why do I even bother? I should just quit my search here and go home!
Lauphit: Hahaha! You're a riot, Juri. No one asked you to chase her down in the first place, right?
Juri: Excuse me? As her friend and comrade, I have a duty—
Lauphit: Yeah, uh-huh. Picture for a second any of your other friends heading out on a soul-searching journey.
Juri: My other friends?
Juri: Hmm...
Lauphit: And? No compulsive urge to run after them, right?
Juri: Honestly? Not at all...
Juri: I care for them, of course, but they're free to spend their time off however they want.
Lauphit: Then why are you so set on following after Farrah?
Juri: Ngh...
Juri: ...
Juri: I don't know!
Lauphit: No idea, huh? Maybe I can help you figure it out.
Juri: You can?
Lauphit: Sure, I can. We're not dealing with the end of the world here. Even a performer like me can handle this much.
Juri: You don't know that for sure. What if this ends up causing an inter-skydom incident—
Lauphit: Sheesh, Juri! You're jumping the gun here!
Lauphit: Got me putting on a comedy sketch without me trying...
Juri: We did practice a lot together...
Lauphit: Guess we did. You and Farrah have practiced a lot too, right?
Juri: You mean as sparring partners?
Lauphit: Sure, with sparring too, but I'm talking about being partners as a whole.
Lauphit: You guys as a combo could give Fiery Soul a run for its money.
Lauphit: So you should know better than anyone that sometimes you gotta expand your horizons to stand side-by-side with your partner.
Juri: As equals...
Lauphit: Especially if your partner's expanding his own horizons.
Lauphit: Anyhow, come over here, Juri.
Juri: What is it?
Lauphit: Turn left and go through the red door at the end of the passage. It'll take you to an unused exit.
Lauphit: You'll be able to escape without drawing attention from your fans.
Juri: You make it sound like I'm a wanted man.
Lauphit: Because you are. You really think they'll let you leave without performing?
Lauphit: Everyone's starving for some quality entertainment, what with the rigged contest and the second-place group breaking up.
Juri: Maybe I should take the stage at least once before leaving...
Lauphit: Don't be daft! You need to find your friend as fast as you can!
Lauphit: For as much as you get along, one misunderstanding is all it takes to kiss 'em goodbye.
Lauphit: Remember the frantic energy you had when you got here? Channel that.
Lauphit: Otherwise you're in for a bad time.
Juri: Lauphit...
Lauphit: I'm being serious for once, got it? Trust me. I know what it's like to lose your partner.
Juri: You, serious? I guess this is no laughing matter after all.
Lauphit: Haha, been keeping your skills sharp, have ya?
Juri: As if I would forget what a pro taught me in the first place!
Juri: Thanks, Lauphit. I owe you one.
Lauphit: Hey, now. None of that. We're friends, right?
Lauphit: But there is one thing you could do for me...
Lauphit: Come back once everything's sorted, and let's put on another show together.
Juri: Of course! You keep thinking up new jokes!
Juri sets off for Auguste, leaving one partner in search of another.
If all goes well, his journey will finally reach its conclusion.
Shoulder to Shoulder: Scene 4
Juri finds Farrah on Auguste and immediately scolds her, letting her know how worried he's been. Farrah opens up about how she felt pressured to find something for herself after Juri became a successful comedian, but that she hasn't found success. Juri reassures her that no matter how much the two of them change, they'll always be equals, and the two come away from the experience with their bond strengthened.
Juri sets foot in Mizarea, capital of Auguste and home to both the sea and its delicious bounty.
Juri: (This is where I left the empire's army and reunited with Farrah...)
Juri: (Sir Pommern, Poseidon, Commander Galston... The place sure brings back memories.)
Cheerful Voice: Fish soup! Get yer fish soup here! Everyone's welcome to get a taste!
Juri: (They sound like they're having fun in the fishing harbor.)
Despite the market being closed at this hour, the fishing harbor is bustling with activity.
Fishmonger: Soup's chock full of good fish, so get some while supplies last! We're not charging a single rupie for it!
Lively Fisherman: You're giving it out for free? Seriously?
Fishmonger: I sure am! Hey, you there! Don't be shy! Come have a bowl!
Juri: Th-thank you very much!
Juri: (This would explain the crowd. But why is she giving her stock out for free?)
Blowing on the hot liquid, Juri takes a sip. His eyes grow wide in surprise as a familiar flavor dances across his tongue.
Juri: This is Farrah's fish soup, isn't it?
Fishmonger: What? You know the lass?
Juri: Y-yeah... Do you know where she is right now? Please, I have to find her!
With the sun setting on the horizon, Juri dashes as fast as he can across the beach.
Juri: (She's out helping a fisherman...)
Juri: (On a journey to catch the fabled God Albacore at that!)
The moment the fish monger revealed that Farrah should still be nearby, Juri had set off in a rush.
Juri: (Where is she... Oh.)
Juri: This is where I first met Farrah after leaving the army...
Juri: Farrah! It's me—Juri! We joined up at the same time, remember?
Farrah: Juri! Oh wow, yeah! It's been a while, huh?
Juri: Farrah... Where did you go?
Farrah: Huh? Juri?
Juri: What?
Farrah: What?
Both: ...
Farrah: What're you doing here?
Juri: That's what I want to ask you!
Juri: You didn't even tell (Captain) where you were going!
Juri: What's all this running around for anyway? Do you want to be a performer's assistant or a fisherman? You better have a good reason!
Juri: At the very least... You could've let me know you were leaving...
Farrah: Juri...
Farrah: You're still the same old you, huh?
Juri: What...
Farrah: You've got it together like you always do, but I'm... I'm a mess.
Juri: Hold on. That's not... I wasn't trying to imply that.
Farrah: I know you weren't, it's just... I guess I was feeling the pressure.
Juri: You were feeling pressured? Why?
Farrah: Hmm... Wanna go for a walk?
Juri: I don't mind, but...
Farrah: Then let's go!
Farrah: Phew, the breeze sure feels nice.
Farrah: You quit the army here on Auguste, didn't you?
Juri: Yes... Looking back on it now, I was acting pretty pathetically at the time.
Farrah: Uh-huh? I mean, I guess you do have a pathetic side. You just don't always show it.
Juri: If it's a fight you're looking for, then I'd be happy to oblige.
Farrah: Be my guest! Er... Wait, I better finish explaining first. So, you know how you quit the army and joined the crew after I did?
Farrah: Since I was one step ahead, I felt like I should look after you, even if you could be a pain in the butt.
Juri: Did you really have to add in that last part?
Farrah: So when you went from just an ordinary ex-imperial soldier to part of Fiery Soul...
Farrah: Of course I was proud of you and I wanted you to do good. I still do.
Farrah: But that's why I felt like I had to make something of myself too.
Farrah: I can't stay an ordinary ex-imperial soldier forever either.
Farrah: Anyway, that's how I ended up going all over the place. I figured I could find a job that I'm suited for if I looked hard enough.
Farrah: Sorry about worrying you this whole time! We can head home to the ship—
Juri: I get it now...
Juri: You were trying to catch up to me.
Farrah: I... What?
Farrah: How dare you imply that I look up to anyone but Katalina!
Juri: Ngh... Maybe I could've phrased it better, but I speak the truth, and you know it!
Farrah: Nuh-uh! You're being delusional! Do I have to beat some sense into you?
Juri: Ow, ow! Stop kicking me! You...
Juri: Pfft, haha.
Farrah: What're you laughing at?
Juri: Listen, Farrah. You're free to think what you want, but I...
Juri: I still think of us as Juri and Farrah of the Grandcypher, partners through and through.
Farrah: Wha?
Juri: Why do you look upset? It's not like we need to slap on "ex-imperial soldiers" in front of our names anymore.
Juri: The empire is long gone.
Farrah: ...
Juri: Things change, and so do we. Sometimes, one of us will get ahead of the other, but we'll always end up—
A loud splash interrupts Juri, followed by a dark shadow drawing near.
Farrah: ...!
Juri: ...!
Without communicating in any shape or form, Juri and Farrah flawlessly defeat the monster in unison.
Juri: Nice block.
Farrah: Nice counterattack. Now what were you saying?
Juri: I just wanted you to know that we're still equals. Team Juri and Farrah all the way, even without fancy titles.
Farrah: ...
Farrah: I didn't expect that, honestly.
Juri: Expect what?
Farrah: That you wanted to pair up so badly with me.
Juri: Excuse me! That's not the point of what I said!
Farrah: Well, since you went out of your way to say all that, I guess I don't mind staying as your partner!
Juri: Why, you...
Farrah: But no promises that I won't leave you in the dust! You better work hard so that we can stay as Team Farrah and Juri!
Juri: Huh? Wait, where are you going?
Farrah: Wherever I want to!
Juri: What? Also, did you just change it so your name's in front?
Farrah: I joined the crew first! It's only right!
Juri: Okay, you have a point there, but still!
Farrah: I guess I don't need to worry too much about you falling behind though.
Farrah: You chased me all the way here, after all!
Juri: Because my father taught me to look after my comrades! Are you listening to me? Farrah!
The two bicker as they run along the beach, with the sunset casting an orange glow over their forms.
They continue on without a care in the world.
Just like that, another day in their lives comes to an end, just as important yet mundane as any other.
