Whoa... The ship's lively today.
Everyone's more cheerful than usual and paying you a lot of attention, Big (Captain).
Maybe I should've made my dream to be more like you.
You're honestly not far off from it, considering how much everyone loves you.
What, you think you're getting special treatment just because it's your birthday today? Hmm, I don't think so.
They all wanna spend time with you because you're you. In addition to the whole birthday thing, of course.
I'd know, since I'm the same...
Uh, nope, I didn't say anything! Hehe, you must've imagined it!
Anyway, you gotta teach me your ways eventually. I've gotta know your technique for being so popular!
For now, I better focus on spoiling you too. It is your special day, after all.
Happy birthday, Big (Captain)!
Happy birthday, Big (Captain)!
I did get you a present, buuut if there's somethin' else you're hopin' for, I'm all ears.
Y'know, back in the day, ninjas were valued for their crazy strength and wild skills, sure.
I think it's 'cause ninjas were strong in the whole "having people's backs" department.
Always workin' from the shadows, givin' their all to back up their master...
So yeah, I kinda wanna be there for you too, y'know?
Not that you're my master or whatever, and I'm not the type to stay outta the spotlight anyway.
Since I left home and started hangin' with the crew, I've been feelin' more and more like I wanna pull my weight.
So seriously, ask me for whatever, anytime. And I'm countin' on you too, okay?
Hehe. Happy birthday, Big (Captain)!
Take a look at this, Big (Captain)! Yu-yu and Ko sent me a letter.
They're doing good, same with everyone else in the village. It's kind of a relief to hear.
Now that I think about it... This might be the first time Ko's sent me a normal letter for New Year's.
And by that I mean I've gotten stuff by pigeon and messages attached to arrows before.
Wonder if my letter's reached them too... Hehe, it's nice, being able to write each other like this.
Makes me feel like the rest of the year is gonna be just as good as today.
Especially when you're with me, Big (Captain).
Hey, Big (Captain). Happy New Year.
Can I have some of that? I mean, you're stuffing your face, Big (Captain).
You plate's totally full. Mochi, osechi, and salad...
Oh, right. You're still a growing person. Hey, you want this?
Hm? It's ozoni. New Year's soup. You'll get it when you try it.
Everyone back home just called it green soup or wasabi soup or whatever.
Good, huh? Eating like this on New Year's Day really gets you going!
Big (Captain), you drink some ozoni and take a big old nap. It'll feel like you got knocked out cold.
Oh, just don't give any to Vyrn-ski or Lyri-boo. Just in case.
Yo, Big (Captain). Doing good?
I brought you something, as thanks for taking such good care of me all the time.
This might be one of the best things I've ever cooked up.
Can you believe an almost expert ninja like me is this cute and this good in the kitchen?
Just look at it! Isn't that bright red color so pretty?
It's just as tasty as it looks too. Trust.
Hm? Now what're you going all pale for?
Why is it red? Does it matter? Oh, do you think it's pepper flavored or something?
Ahahaha! Ah...
You've got nothing to worry about here. Promise.
C'mon, just try a bite.
Big (Captain), I brought you a treat!
Bet you've had tons of sweets since morning, right? Kinda craving something spicy by now?
Man, I'm wild, huh. Cute, hardworking, a baking pro, and thoughtful too. Absolute top-tier.
I even customized this treat to fit your taste, Big (Captain).
No need to be so tense. Check it out, it's not red or green, yeah?
Not fooled by colors anymore?
Look at you! You're sharp, Big (Captain)!
Looks like you're leveling up your spice game. You're officially one of us.
Man, that's reassuring! I'm happy to have a fellow spice buddy.
Then it's settled, next day off we go to the wasabi place I found. It's a date, yeah?
Gift
Raspberry Chocolate Cake 2nd year: White Chocolate Cake
Big (Captain)? Do you need something? Wait, don't tell me...
You're giving me a gift for White Day! Yaaay! What is it?
Oh... This is... a wasabi cookie sandwich! You know me so well!
Can't believe you remembered what I like. Gosh, you sure know how to make a girl happy...
Thanks, Big (Captain). I'm gonna work harder than ever to make sure I'm pulling my weight in this crew!
Heheh!
Big (Captain), that... isn't for me, by any chance?
I can feel it already, that intense kick wafting right through the box!
Sniff sniff...
Ahhh... It smells so good...
This is that legendary hot sauce from that village in North Vast, isn't it?
Wait, what? You had this specially ordered just for me?
Big (Captain)!
Let's try it! Get in on this, Big (Captain)!
All aboard the spice train, toot toot!
Oh, Big (Captain). Did I scare you? Eheh.
I was trying this technique Ko taught me to make copies of myself...
Failed big time though. There were supposed to be seven of me.
Looks like three's my limit. Plus, I can't figure out how to get back to normal.
Hm? Are you here for something specific?
What? You brought me candy... because I asked you to when you were on the deck?
I'm pretty sure that wasn't me you saw. I've been in my room all day and haven't seen you until now.
Don't tell me... I actually succeeded at making other copies? That's awesome to hear.
Or... Hold on. If there are other copies of me acting on their own, that might not be the same type of technique anymore!
I've gotta get them back before they start playing tricks on other people! Big (Captain), you gotta help me!
Heeey, Big (Captain)! Happy Halloween.
No mustard, no mercy—I'll prank ya! You got some, right?
Oh, you don't? Well, guess that means it's prank time.
Huh? You think I'm gonna feed you something spicy? C'mon, no wayyy.
Spicy food's basically a prize, not a prank! The prank you're facing is...
Ninja Art! Tastebud Scrambler!
Now everything spicy should taste sweet for a while. Hehe, bet you didn't see that coming!
Oh, and just 'cause it tastes sweet doesn't mean you can pig out. You'll totally wreck your stomach. Take it easy, yeah?
Heya, Big (Captain), I wanted to ask you about the decorations we're putting up for the party...
Why're you lugging your weapon around? Huh? You got a sudden request to clear out some monsters?
And you accepted even though it's this cold outside? Oof...
That's real rough, buddy. The party's probably gonna start while you're out there too.
Just kidding. Don't look at me with those puppy-dog eyes. You know I wouldn't do you dirty like that.
Besides, it's not like a crew can have a party without its captain. Guess I'll lend you a hand.
But I expect something special as thanks. It's the holidays, so you'll pull out all the stops, right?
Like a wasabi cake. I'd put in the work to get me one of those.
Wait, you'll make one for me? Seriously?
Well, what're we standing around for? Let's go! The faster we get things done, the more free time we'll have...
And the sooner we can dig into some wasabi cake!
(Captain) heads to the captain's quarters on the eve of the holidays to find Vyrn. Vyrn?: Hey there, Big (Captain).
Happy to see me? Come on, admit it... be happy. C'mon, it's me. Me!
Oh. Maybe you noticed my face is a little off? Sato: Tch. I wanted to goof on you a bit more.
What am I up to? Hey, just practicing my substitution jutsu. Pretty good, right?
Hm? This Vyrn-ski? Oh, yeah. It's not a fake; I just put him under a paralyzing jutsu.
Y'know, I was thinking of giving you a present when the jutsu wore off from Vyrn-ski... Vyrn: ... Sato: Oh, he'll be out for a while. Well, here's your gift. I'mma head out.
See ya. Happy holidays and all that.

Daring to Dream Again
As the Ninja Village settles into its new way of life, Sato finds herself unsure about chasing her childhood dream of becoming a true ninja known across the skies. She hesitates, traumatized by Nue's previous disappearance, but eventually finds the courage to step into the outside world after a heart-to-heart with Nue and Yuzuriha.
Sato, a ninja warrior, was born and raised in a secret ninja village of the far east.
As an adult, she spent her days listlessly completing intelligence-gathering missions and other related tasks.
But in her youth, she spent her days chasing after a dream, inspired by a mentor and friend whom she respected above all others.
At the time, she wished to one day become a ninja as cool as he was.
That all changed the day that she received news of his supposed death.
However, after being embroiled in a scandal involving their village, she was able to meet him once more.
Some years ago, in the far east, a young girl strikes an exaggerated pose.
Child Sato: Ninja Art! Brown Sugar Blast!
Child Sato: Huh?
Child Sato: Aww... It's not working! Did I do something wrong?
Kotaro: Hmm... Not exactly. Perhaps you are putting too much emphasis on your posture.
Child Sato: What do you mean?
Kotaro: You should focus more on the energy coursing through your body. If you do so, your posing shouldn't matter.
Child Sato: Hey, Ko... How come you always look so cool even though you don't pose?
Kotaro: Huh?
Child Sato: Come on! Tell me!
Kotaro: Um... I...
Sato: Back then, I followed him around everywhere like a baby chick.
Sato: I was as cute as one too, honestly.
Sato: But...
Sato: Ko... is dead?
Sato: How...
Sato:There weren't any details on the notice.
Sato:Just that he perished in an accident on the way home.
Sato: There's no way... He can't be gone. I just saw him earlier. He even said I'd gotten better at my ninjutsu.
Sato: That I'd started getting the hang of throwing shuriken...
Sato: He looked so happy. He promised he'd see me later... and...
Sato: And...
Sato: (Nothing was the same after that.)
Sato: (I admired Ko. Wanted to become like him. But with him gone... I lost all the fire in my heart.)
Sato: It would've been more surprising if I didn't change...
Sato: (But then I learned that Ko was still alive. So now... Where does that leave me?)
Sato: (Maybe I should try following my old dream again. Would that really be okay though?)
Nue: Sato.
Sato: ...!
The girl gasps, not expecting anyone to sneak up on her while she reminisces on the outskirts of the village.
Sato: Ko! Hey, what's up?
She breaks out into a smile as soon as she realizes who has stopped by.
Sato: Did you manage to find me without getting lost today?
Nue: Please... Though this place is a little out of the way, it's much easier to navigate than the heart of the village.
Sato: Yeah? Well, if you're here, then I guess it's time for our daily meeting.
Nue: Indeed. Here is what I have to report...
When the dust settled after the scandal, it was Yuzuriha, daughter of the village head, who reassured the troubled villagers.
She earnestly apologized for her father's wrongdoings and spoke of a brighter future for their people.
Yuzuriha: There is a dream I hold close to my heart...
Yuzuriha: That when justice is upheld, ninjas will emerge from the shadows to support those who work for the forces of good.
Yuzuriha: That in the vast world beyond our borders, whenever someone cries for help, a ninja will come to the rescue.
Yuzuriha: It is my hope that our village will raise those ninja warriors... and send them out into every corner of the world.
Yuzuriha: I understand that there are those of us who are uneasy. The head of our village will be absent for the foreseeable future, including for our upcoming graduation.
Yuzuriha: But I swear that I will ensure the safety and prosperity of our village in the interim, alongside Sato and Nue.
After giving an excellent speech as the new head of the village, Yuzuriha accompanied her brother back into their school building.
Sato: Seems like Yu-yu's plan to redeem our ninja reputation and spread our name is going pretty good.
Sato: Remember how you saved one of the nearby villages from bandits the other day? Everyone was falling over themselves to get your attention after.
Sato: No surprises there, though. You gotta turn heads to change minds and your ninjutsu is awesome to see in action.
Sato: They were calling you the village's savior and a champion of justice and everything. Even the adults swarmed you.
Nue: I would rather not be reminded of it. I'm unworthy of such praise...
Sato: As if! You're amazing and you should be proud of your skills!
Nue: However, my skills alone won't be enough to change the impression people have of ninjas. I don't have the looks or the attitude.
Nue: I'm more suited to being a messenger for the village and the school...
Sato: Nope, none of that. I get that you're not used to living in the village yet, but that's no reason to give up.
Sato: Actually, you should prioritize getting used to life here. That's an order.
Sato: You protect the village, and I deliver messages. We've all got our own jobs that we're suited for, y'know?
Despite her apathetic attitude, Sato's line of thinking is clear-cut and well-thought-out.
This fact is not lost on Nue, who once spent time observing Sato closely in order to impersonate her.
Nue: (One should never judge by appearances alone...)
The man has since learned much after reuniting with Sato and speaking with her, in a surprising yet positive way.
Nue: You never cease to amaze...
Nue: I can hardly believe you're the same girl who used to follow after me like a lost babe.
Nue: You've grown in the blink of an eye... Your perspective now vast and mature.
Nue: It's as if you've become a different person. The thought fills me with a sense of melancholy...
Sato: Wha? I mean, I'm not a kid anymore. I'm eighteen now.
Nue: True... One cannot stay a child forever. But your growth is something to behold.
Nue: I'd wager it won't be long until you make your dream a reality.
Sato: Huh?
Nue: Don't you remember? You used to tell me all the time how you wished to become a true ninja.
Sato: A-ahaha! Oh, pfft, that? Kids say that kinda stuff all the time.
Nue: But...
Sato: You know, it's about time for me to report to Yu-yu!
Sato: See you! Bye!
Nue: Ah!
Nue: Sato?
Yuzuriha: It's a relief to hear that everything is proceeding smoothly.
Yuzuriha: I was worried that having our ninjas work in broad daylight would be a challenge, given how they have concealed themselves all this time...
Yuzuriha: But it seems that they are making a good impression on the general populace. The village itself is even in high spirits.
Sato: Right? Honestly, there's nothing like taking pride in your work and getting thanked for it too.
Sato: Especially since it's new to all of us. Working under your old man meant staying out of the limelight, so we never got properly appreciated for our effort.
Sato: Still, Ko's got me a little worried. His attitude definitely rubs people the wrong way sometimes.
Yuzuriha: Hehe, I'll leave that issue up to you. I trust in your coaching abilities.
Sato: Whaaat? Come on, that's a lotta pressure I don't need...
Yuzuriha: Hehe, you can't blame me for putting you in such high regard.
Yuzuriha: After all, it's thanks to you and Nue that the future I envisioned for us is becoming reality!
Sato: Yeah? As if there was any doubt you could make your dream come true.
Yuzuriha: (Oh, dear. This again...)
Recently, whenever their conversations touch on the future, Yuzuriha has noticed that Sato grows tense and distant.
This trend, Yuzuriha guesses, must have started after Sato reunited with Nue.
Yuzuriha: (But what exactly is the cause of it?)
Yuzuriha: Um, Satty...
Sato: By the way, how's school been? Is your kidnapping still the hot topic of the week?
Sato: Don't tell me people actually still believe you were nabbed by yokai.
Noticing that her friend is forcing a change in subject, Yuzuriha decides not to pry for the time being.
Yuzuriha: I'm afraid those rumors have yet to completely cease.
Sato: Even though you told everyone that there was no kidnapping and that you ran away from home?
Yuzuriha: People do love their rumors, especially in a place so secluded and devoid of much entertainment...
Yuzuriha's disappearance was explained to her classmates as an incident where she ran away from her home.
Sato was the one who suggested they go with that explanation.
Sato: The school's supposed to be a bastion of safety. Guess this just proves they don't fully believe that.
Sato: Eh, but what can you do? This was our best chance of keeping the peace.
Yuzuriha: I don't disagree. Give it enough time, and I'm certain they'll find something else to amuse themselves with.
Yuzuriha: Besides, in a few more weeks, I'll have graduated, and that will be that. No one will care to pursue the truth after that.
Yuzuriha: I'm a little concerned about Hiogi, but he's a smart boy. Everything should work out in the end.
Sato: Now that you mention it... Once you graduate, I won't have a job as messenger anymore.
Yuzuriha: Yes. There won't be a need for such a role any longer.
Yuzuriha: What will you do once I return? Surely you have something in mind already...
Sato: Nope, not at all! I figure I'll just find random jobs here and there and save up when I can.
Yuzuriha: Is that so...
Despite her misgivings, Yuzuriha keeps her silence.
A few weeks later, a newly graduated Yuzuriha returns home to their village and takes charge.
Nue settles into his role as Yuzuriha's guard, accompanying his charge throughout her increasingly busy days.
Sato, as well, finds that her daily life has changed.
Sato: I'm bored out of my miiiind...
Sato: I should've brought that book on transformation techniques with me...
Without a job or request to fulfill, Sato had been spending her day reading in her room—at least until a moment ago.
Sato: Ugh, why does Mom have to get so mad at me lazing around anyway? It's not like I have anything better to do.
Sato: Ahhh... Maybe I should just nap.
After wandering aimlessly around the outskirts of the village, she sits down on a tree stump and stares into space.
However, the sound of a snapping twig brings her back to reality. She turns around to find two familiar figures approaching.
Sato: Yu-yu? Ko?
Sato: What're you two doing here?
Nue: ...
Despite looking like they have something to say, both Nue and Yuzuriha hesitate to speak. Eventually, Yuzuriha decides to go first.
Yuzuriha: Satty...
Yuzuriha: Do you remember when you bid farewell to the crew? You said you would visit them once things settled down here.
Sato: Oh... I did, didn't I? But you just got back, and there's still lots to do, and...
Yuzuriha: So you won't go see them?
Sato: Not yet, at least.
Yuzuriha: Then when?
Sato: Why're you nagging me about this?
Yuzuriha: Because you have been distant of late, struggling with something that you seem reluctant to share with us...
Sato: What, me?
Yuzuriha: Yes, you. Once upon a time, you had a dream of your own, didn't you?
Yuzuriha: When you saw Nue again after all this time, that dream must have resurfaced in your mind.
Sato: ...!
Nue: As a child, you always said that you would become known far and wide as the most beautiful and brilliant ninja in all the skies.
Sato: I was a kid back then. I've got different priorities now...
Nue: Does that mean you've given up? I find that hard to believe, considering the way you fervently used to speak of your goal.
Sato: I just... I didn't know any better, okay? Give it a rest already! Who cares about the past anyway?
Yuzuriha: Who cares? I do!
In a rare fit of frustration, Yuzuriha raises her voice, startling Sato into silence.
Yuzuriha: Satty... I can tell you're afraid.
Sato: What?
Yuzuriha: You unconsciously search for Nue whenever he isn't in front of you, like a baby bird looking for its mother.
Yuzuriha: You fear that he will vanish again if you don't keep an eye on him. That's why you hesitate to leave for the outside world.
Sato: Wha... No! That's stupid! And childish! I would never!
Nue: I left you with a scar that has yet to heal. This is my fault.
Sato: Not you too...
Nue: Your dream, however unconventional, is something to be proud of.
Nue: To spread your name across the skies... You must leave this village.
Nue: Yet you linger here, though you are free to roam wherever you wish.
Sato: ...
Nue: Such freedom is something I once longed for myself.
Nue: Seeing you hesitate like this... It reminds me of how I was before—bound and caged by duty.
Nue: It brings me great pain to know that I am the cause of the ties that bind you.
Sato: It's not... your fault...
Yuzuriha: When you lost Nue, your way of thinking... Your way of life completely changed.
Yuzuriha: You're unsure of how to face everything, including your long-lost dream, now that he's returned and you're a different person.
Sato: ...!
Nue: Sato... I'm glad to have met you again. Though I was surprised by how you've changed, I know you are the same person at heart.
Nue: Please, don't be afraid. Follow your dream.
Nue: You needn't worry about losing me a second time. I'll be here waiting for you.
Sato: You... You can't know that for sure!
Sato: Back then, you said you'd see me later, but then you disappeared!
Nue: ...!
Sato: I don't wanna leave you! Not after finally seeing you after all this time!
Sato: It's not like I want to stick by your side forever like a little kid, but...
Sato: What if you disappear again while I'm gone?
Sato: If that happens, that'll be it. You'll vanish for good...
Sato: I can't stand the thought of that!
Sato: I can't go through that pain a second time!
Yuzuriha: Satty...
Nue and Yuzuriha grow silent as Sato's wailing pierces their hearts.
Nue: Sato, open your eyes and look up. What do you see?
Sato: You and Yu-yu... And the village behind you, the same as ever.
Nue: So you say, but when we first met, I never would've pictured myself walking through the village in broad daylight.
Nue: Everything is different now. My place in the world, the village itself... and you. We are all changing for the better.
Sato: ...
Nue: I actually have come to harbor a dream of my own. A duty to see through.
Sato: A duty?
Nue: It is my wish to pass on the way of the ninja to future generations, so that they know what a proper ninja should be.
Sato: A proper ninja, huh...
Nue: In other words, we both dream of showing others the path of a true ninja.
Nue: But as you said before, we have our own roles that we're suited for.
Nue: I shall follow my dream within the village, while you follow yours in the outside world. Our paths will be aligned, no matter the distance between us.
Nue: Together, we can make our dreams come true. What do you say?
Sato: Ko...
Sato: Sniffle... Waaah!
Yuzuriha: Satty!
As Sato bawls her eyes out, Yuzuriha sweeps her into a tight hug.
Yuzuriha: You must've been overjoyed to meet Nue again.
Yuzuriha: But that joy was tempered by fear in equal measure.
Yuzuriha: Not to mention the shock of finding out the truth.
Yuzuriha: Yet you kept all these feelings bottled up inside, so that you could focus on saving us.
Yuzuriha: Now it's our turn to be there for you. Please... Trust us, and let yourself fly free.
Nue: We'll be with you, no matter where you travel—right here, in your heart.
Sato: Yu-yu... Ko!
Yuzuriha: There, there. Nue won't be leaving you again.
Yuzuriha: I promise I'll keep a close eye on him while you're away.
Nue: I-indeed... I'll be under careful observation.
Yuzuriha: Oh, you sound unhappy with the arrangement. Is there something you'd like to say?
Nue: N-not at all! If that is what it takes, then by all means!
Sato: Hehe...
Sato: Thanks, you two. You've convinced me. I'm gonna go and see the world.
Yuzuriha: Satty!
Sato: Ko, you'll stay put and keep the village safe in the meantime, right?
Nue: Without fail. I swear it.
Sato: Then I guess it's my turn.
Sato: I swear I'll take everything you taught me and show the world what it means to be a true ninja!
Nue: That... is wonderful to hear!
Yuzuriha: Hehe... There's the Satty we know and love.
Yuzuriha: As the head of the village, there's something I'd like you to do while you're traveling.
Sato: You had a job lined up for me already? Well, aren't you clever!
Yuzuriha: Hehehe! Still...
Yuzuriha: I find myself getting teary now that it's time to say goodbye.
Sato: Yu-yu... Really? After saying all that to get me to leave?
Sato: You know I'll keep in contact and even bring Miri-bae and everyone over to hang sometime. You won't even have a chance to miss me.
Yuzuriha: Sniffle... You better. I'll chase you down to the end of the skies if you forget about me.
Sato: Right, right... I'm counting on you to keep track of Ko and the village, okay?
Sato: And you, Ko! If you let anything happen to Yu-yu or the village while I'm gone, I'm taking you straight to wasabi hell!
Nue: ...!
U-u-understood! Even if it should cost me my life—
Sato: Ko...
Nue: Ahem... What I meant to say was... On my family's honor, I will keep them safe.
Sato: Eh... I'll take that!
Sato: Guess there's no point dragging this out any longer. Yu-yu! Ko!
Sato: I'll see you later!
A single ninja emerges from home, ready to see the world. Though the path ahead won't be easy, she charges fearlessly forward.
With a place to return to, promises to keep, and a dream to fulfill, she has every reason to stand strong.
Those thoughts will keep her going, no matter the hurdles that come her way.
Leaving her home behind, Sato leisurely follows the crew's tracks and catches up to them as they're being attacked by bandits. After making a flashy entrance and defeating the criminals, Sato explains that she's on a journey to fulfill her dream and requests to join the crew. (Captain) and friends welcome her aboard, happy to support her however they can.
Some time has passed since Sato left her home, the Ninja Village. After traversing mountains, plains, and the sky, she finds herself in a valley on a certain island.
Her search for the crew has led her here. For a ninja of Sato's caliber, tracking them has been an easy task.
Sato: That hot pot was super good! You don't find spice like that back home in the east!
Sato: The soup and ingredients were bright red. No way Ko or Yu-yu could've eaten that.
Sato: Kinda want to have some again, now that I'm thinking about it... Ugh, no, get a hold of yourself, girl. It's about time you seriously look for Big (Captain) and friends.
Making many pit stops to enjoy all the outside world has to offer, Sato has yet to meet with the targets of her search.
Sato: But Lil' Siero said they'd be coming to this village for a request... They should be here soon.
Sato: I just have to wait. Someone cute and smart like me can't be wrong.
Right as she finishes speaking, the sound of distant gunfire catches her attention.
Sato: That sounded like it came from over there. Wonder what's going on.
Bandit: Two brats and a lizard, huh? Should've known better than to take a hike in these here woods.
Vyrn: The heck is your problem! You always shoot your gun like that before sayin' hello?
Bandit: The lizard talks? Now I've really seen everything.
Bandit: Heh... Bet you'll sell for a pretty rupie.
Vyrn: Yeah? Try and catch me if you can, big guy!
Sato: There they are. Aside from the sticky situation, everyone seems to be doing okay.
Sato: Hold on... This might actually be my chance to shine.
Sato: A true ninja should be able to take out evil quickly with no sound and max style.
Sato: Since I'll probably be saving a lotta people down the line, I should practice.
Nodding to herself, Sato tries to think of an impressive pose to assume.
Sato: Hmm... I got some posing practice in as a kid, but... None of those ideas were that cute.
Sato: I've gotta look cool and charming at the same time... and come in with a line that'll leave an impression.
Bandit: If you know what's good for ya, you'll leave your lizard and wallet and scram!
Sato: Should I let my blade catch the light and shine dramatically? Or maybe I'll hold my shuriken next to my face at this angle...
Lyria: We refuse! You can't have Vyrn!
Sato: Then when I come in, I'll say, "Through the veil of night, the ninja of justice..."
Sato: Wait, it's the middle of the day. That won't work.
Sato: Actually, how's everything going in the meantime?
The pondering ninja abruptly raises her head to check on the crew.
Vyrn: That's what I'm talking about! Show these punks who's boss!
Sato: Ah, crap. They're gonna finish kicking their butts before I finish brainstorming.
Sato: Guess I shouldn't have expected anything less from Big (Captain).
Sato: I'll figure the posing out later. For now, it's showtime.
Sato: Ninja Art: Brown Sugar Blast!
Bandit: Gaaah!
Vyrn: Whoa, what was that?
Lyria: Did I just hear "ninja art"? That must be...
Sato: Aw, that entry would've been so much more awesome if I had a cool line prepped.
Sato: With all the sightseeing and good eats, I totally forgot about prep...
Lyria: Satty!
Sato: Surpiiise. Heya, guys.
The crew's eyes go wide as Sato, showing off her ninja skills, appears out of the blue.
Despite her complaints, Sato is plenty satisfied to see that her entrance still made an impact.
Lyria: Whatever that move was, it was amazing!
Sato: Ehehe, thanks! Would've preferred a little more flair, but it is what it is.
Sato: Ehehe, thanks. I don't know much about skyfaring, but I'll do my best to pull my weight.
Vyrn: Anything you wanna know, just ask! You couldn't have picked a better crew to join.
Sato: That's for sure. I get the feeling my dream'll come true in a flash with you guys backing me up.
Sato: I can see it now... All the skies'll be singing praises to Ninja Sato the Brilliant Beauty!
Sato: Once I'm famous, I can spend the rest of my days kicking it back and relaxing... Ehehe...
Vyrn: Don't tell me that's been your actual goal this whole time...
Sato: So you were headed to a nearby village before the rude interruption, right? I'll help with the request you've got lined up.
Sato: With me by your side, we can wrap it up fast and get some nice eats with the extra free time.
Lyria: Tasty food always sounds good to me!
Vyrn: Sheesh, we got another lively one, huh?
Successfully reunited with (Captain) and crew, Sato can now truly begin her foray into the wide-open skies.
Unabashed Pride: Scene 2
Sato and crew arrive in a village to help them deal with a man-eating flower. They learn that the flower was previously defeated by a ninja who worked from the shadows, leaving only a throwing kunai behind. Sato is impressed, but also begins to question whether or not she can become a true ninja if she wants to be credited for her work. As she ponders this, a village girl rushes in begging for help.
Village Chief: Welcome, welcome!
Vyrn: Eep!
Village Chief: Well, aren't you kiddos cute as a button!
Lyria: H-hello, we're here for a request!
Village Chief: That so, that so? You came all the way out here just for us? Bless your hearts!
Vyrn: C-can you go easy on the rubbing? I ain't no pet!
Vyrn: Anyway, are you the one we're supposed to talk to about the request?
Village Chief: Oh, that's right! We've got quite the predicament on our hands, let me tell you.
The elderly woman introduces herself as the chief of the village.
As it turns out, the situation is a lot more serious than her high spirits would imply.
Vyrn: A man-eating flower? That doesn't sound good!
Village Chief: You've sure got that right!
After shouting as loud as Vyrn, the chief clears her throat before continuing.
Village Chief: Ahem... You see, that flower grows in the nearby forest.
Village Chief: Every fifty years, when it blooms, the man-eater comes to terrorize the village...
Vyrn: Gulp...
Village Chief: The flower's not bloomed yet, but it's nearly been fifty years since the last incident.
Village Chief: Only a matter of time, we believe... Hehehe...
Lyria: Is it just me, or did the room get colder?
Village Chief: Anyway, not too long ago a couple of folks noticed that the flower was budding.
Village Chief: With danger around the corner, we sent out a request for help.
Sato: Hmm, if it's still in that state, then maybe we can strike before it starts hunting.
Sato: By the way, do you know how they took it down the last time?
Village Chief: That's a mighty fine question!
The chief rushes elsewhere in the house and returns at a speed no ordinary senior would manage.
Village Chief: Take a gander!
Sato: This is...
Lyria: A tool made out of metal? Or a weapon?
The chief holds out a hand-sized object with a sharp, pointed blade on one end.
Village Chief: This here's a precious relic of the village, passed down to me from the previous chief.
Village Chief: Fifty years ago, when the village went to check on the flower... They found it withered up already, with this stuck at the base of its roots.
Village Chief: No clue who did it, but whoever it was saved us all—a true hero!
Vyrn: Can I see it? Huh, it's kinda heavy for me...
Village Chief: Did you know the tip of that thing's covered in poison? I'd be careful if I were you.
Vyrn: Eek!
Vyrn: Why didn't you say so earlier? You tryin' to give me a heart attack?
Village Chief: Hehe, it's probably fine though. Surely after fifty years that poison's no good. Surely.
Vyrn: Gah, someone get this thing away from me!
As Vyrn fearfully grips the object as far away from the blade as possible, Sato calmly extends her hand out.
Sato: Can I see it? Just like I thought... This is a throwing kunai.
Lyria: A throwing kunai? What's that?
Sato: It's a pretty standard weapon in a ninja's arsenal. I also carry my own around.
Lyria: Wow! Does that mean it was a ninja that saved everyone before?
Sato: Looks like it. But there's no name or any kind of identifying inscription on this, so I'm just guessing.
Village Chief: A ninja, you say? Now that's wonderful to hear!
Sato: You're... oddly happy to find that out. Why is that?
Village Chief: Everyone in the village owes their lives to the owner of this weapon! Of course I'd be happy to learn more about them!
Village Chief: Deary me, to think you skyfarers not only came to rescue us, but also brought precious knowledge about our hero!
Village Chief: Blessed be this day! I'm so happy I could die on the spot!
Lyria: Please don't!
Sato: Kidding aside, I can tell the owner of this kunai means a lot to your village.
Sato: Hehe... That's awesome.
Vyrn: Sure is cool, huh? Didn't take credit or anything. Just beat the monster and left!
In the midst of internally celebrating this new knowledge, Vyrn's words give Sato pause.
Sato: (No wonder Ko always said ninjas should work from the shadows... Definitely adds a coolness factor.)
Sato: (But if it were me...)
Sato: I'd want people to know I was the one that put in the effort.
Sato: (My whole goal is to spread my name far and wide. But maybe that goes against what a true ninja should be?)
Sato: Hmm...
Lyria: Satty?
Lyria, noticing that Sato is staring intensely at the kunai in her hand, tries to ask her if something is wrong, but the sound of approaching footsteps makes her pause.
Village Girl: Chief, you have to help! The flower got my brother!
Sato: ...!
Unabashed Pride: Scene 3
Rescuing the village girl's brother from the man-eating flower, Sato uses her own kunai to stun the monster, allowing (Captain) to defeat it. Grateful, the village chief asks to keep Sato's kunai as a protective relic, to which she agrees on the condition that her name be engraved on it and records are kept of the crew's helpful deed. The experience shows Sato that she can both help others and openly take pride in her work without compromising her goal of becoming a true ninja.
Vyrn: Found 'em! Over there!
Man-Eating Flower: Grawr!
Village Boy: Ahhh! Help me!
After running all the way to the forest from the chief's home, the crew make one last dash to reach their mark.
Lyria: Hold on, we'll get you out of this!
The large monster has the young boy within its grasp, ready to swallow him whole.
Man-Eating Flower: Grrr!
Vyrn: It can move? Watch out—it's coming this way!
Before the captain can act, the monster suddenly freezes.
Man-Eating Flower: Grawr?
Vyrn: H-huh? Why'd it stop?
The crew stares at the frozen monster in confusion, trying to spot the cause of its sudden change.
Sato: Big (Captain)! I've got the kiddo, so feel free to cut loose!
Vyrn: Heck yeah! Let's go, (Captain)!
Village Boy: Next thing I knew, she had me in her arms! I didn't even notice I was free!
Village Girl: Wow! How'd you manage to do that?
Vyrn: Yeah, how did you?
Sato: Ahaha, I just took a page outta the village hero's book and threw one of these at the monster.
In one smooth motion, Sato draws her kunai and waves it around.
Lyria: A throwing kunai! But... it looks a little different than the one the chief had.
Sato: Yep, that's because it's mine.
Sato: Didn't have any poison on me so I couldn't take it down, but I did manage to stick it in a vital spot.
Vyrn: Whoa, you're really something! That explains why it stopped moving. How'd you know where its vital spot was though?
Sato: I just remembered what the chief said about finding that other kunai buried at the base of its roots. Also, I can't take all the credit since you guys had it distracted.
Sato: Can't believe how convenient it is to fight with allies. Ninjas normally work alone, so I'm not used to having so many options in battle.
Sato: Life'll be smooth going for me if we keep this up.
As Sato finishes speaking, the village chief walks up to the group, smiling as brightly as the two children admiring their new hero.
Village Chief: Miss Ninja, I've actually got a favor to ask, if you don't mind...
Sato: From me specifically? What is it?
Village Chief: Would you give that weapon to our village? Consider this the last request of an old lady who's not long for this world!
Sato: Huh? You want... my kunai?
Village Chief: That I do! You used it to save us from that horrible man-eating flower...
Village Chief: Like the second coming of our hero from fifty years ago! This must be fate!
Village Chief: Which is why I'd like to keep both kunai here in the village as protective charms!
Sato: Hmm... Sure, why not?
Village Chief: Really? You don't mind?
Sato: Not at all. But in return...
Sato: Phew... That about does it, I think.
Vyrn: Hey, Ninja Girl!
Lyria: We brought you refreshments! Wanna take a break?
Sato: Oooh, thanks. I just finished, actually, so I've got time.
Vyrn: How'd the engraving go?
Sato: Managed to fit my name in, but that's it. "Ninja Sato the Brilliant Beauty" was a bit too long, sadly.
Vyrn: Pretty sure just your name is good enough...
Sato has agreed to gift the kunai she used against the man-eating plant—on two conditions.
First is that the village keep records of how Ninja Sato and the crew defeated the monster this year. The second is that the kunai be engraved with her name.
Sato: Gotta make sure nobody forgets who this kunai belonged to, no matter how many years pass.
Sato: Hm, you guys want in on this too? Maybe I can squeeze your names in somehow...
Though the thought is appreciated, (Captain) smiles and says no.
Vyrn: That's your kunai, Ninja Girl.
Vyrn: You sure you should be writing your name down in the first place? I thought true ninjas were supposed to work without being noticed...
Sato: About that... I haven't completely made up my mind about it, but...
After spending a few moments collecting her thoughts, Sato begins to explain.
Sato: Ninjas have always moved behind the scenes throughout historical events.
Sato: But no one has any idea about the roles they've played this entire time.
Sato: Sure, it's cool to, like, work in the shadows and leave without being noticed, but...
Sato: My dream is to be known far and wide as Ninja Sato, the brilliant and beautiful, and I won't let anyone take that from me.
Sato: Plus, there's no rule that says spreading my name around means I'm a failure of a ninja.
Sato: As long as I stick to what really matters about our way of life.
Lyria: I like it.
Sato: Huh?
Lyria: Er, not that I know what life is like for ninjas, but...
Lyria: If you don't want to give up on something, then I think it's good you're sticking by that decision.
Lyria: How do I put it... I like that you're treasuring your own feelings on the matter.
Sato: Yeah? Thanks, Lyri-boo.
Sato: I've made up my mind!
After grinning bashfully at Lyria, Sato pumps her fist excitedly into the air.
Sato: I'm gonna work hard so that the kunai I leave here'll be a priceless artifact one day!
Sato: By then, there won't be a single person left in the skies who hasn't heard my name!
Driven by great ambition, the free-spirited girl leaves her first mark on the outside world.
Though this young chick has just started to fly, she's confident she won't lose her way—not with reliable friends at her side and a dream to hold fast to.
A sampling of Sato's wasabi leaves Tsukuyomi curious, leading the two to promise to embark on many more journeys together in search of curious flavors.
One day in the Grandcypher's galley, Sato is kicking back with a wooden spoon in her mouth, feeling on top of the world.
Sato: Man, this hits different... That sharp kick running up the nose—can't get enough of it.
Sato: Hehe, one more bite... Wasabi after a hard day's work? Peak reward-time.
Sato: Wait, only three bites left? No, two? Aw, this sucks.
Sato: Wait... I can space it out into five micro-bites... Yeah.
As Sato stares down the bottom of the jar, someone watches her from behind a shelf.
Tsukuyomi: ...
Sato: What's up? Oh, don't tell me you were staring 'cause I'm too pretty?
Tsukuyomi: No. That's not why I was staring.
Sato: Aw, and here I thought my charm was lethal. So? Something on your mind?
Tsukuyomi: I'm here because (Captain) asked me to clean the dining hall.
Tsukuyomi: Then I saw you taking a soft green substance out of that jar and eating it with great delight.
Tsukuyomi: I was curious what that green substance might taste like, so I observed in silence.
Sato: Whoa, you're sharp to be interested in this.
Sato: This right here's wasabi—the best food in the skies. But, yeah, not everyone can handle it.
Tsukuyomi: Is it sweeter and more delicious than peaches... or roasted sweet potatoes?
Sato: Sweet? Nah, not even close. More like the opposite.
Tsukuyomi: ...? Then what kind of flavor is it?
Tsukuyomi: You said earlier that a "kick" ran up your nose. I am curious about this "kick" that runs up noses.
Sato: How do I put this... It's like the kind of taste that blasts away your tiredness and everything else. That sharp sting gets addictive, y'know?
Tsukuyomi: I see... I understand "spicy" as a flavor that causes stimulation.
Tsukuyomi: When Sankara ate a spicy fruit once, she flailed her limbs and rolled around on the ground.
Sato: Yeah? That must've been some kinda brutal chili pepper.
Sato: Wouldn't be me, though. I'm Team Spice all the way; chili, wasabi—bring it on.
Tsukuyomi: I see... So among skydwellers, there are those with a resistance to spice, collectively known as Team Spice?
Sato: Eh? Nah, not resistance—it's more of a personal preference, you know?
Sato: And if we're talkin' preferences, then you're definitely Team Sweet, yeah?
Sato: Hehe. I mean, you like peaches and roasted sweet potatoes, right? That makes you pure Team Sweet, no doubt.
Tsukuyomi: I see. So I am Team Sweet.
Sato: But me? I wanna make Team Spice the next big thing.
Tsukuyomi: Then your wish is... to eradicate Team Sweet?
Sato: Whoa, there! That's one way to put it but let's hold back on the war declaration, okay?
Tsukuyomi: I would not wish for skydwellers to fight one another.
Sato: Heh. You're a good kid. Here—have some of my premium wasabi.
Tsukuyomi: But you have very little left. Are you sure?
Sato: Of course! If you end up liking it, that's another recruit for Team Spice—a win-win for me.
Sato: And in that case, we could make a Team Spice Club. I'll be the leader—Ninja Sato the Brilliant Beauty and Fearless Spice Master!
Tsukuyomi: ...
Sato: All right, since this is your first time and all—just a tiny taste, 'kay?
Tsukuyomi: Understood. Thank you.
Tsukuyomi dips her tongue into the dab of wasabi.
Tsukuyomi: ...!
Sato: Well?
Tsukuyomi: Ah! Th-this is... a new sensation...
Sato: Haha, maybe a bit strong for your first time? Here, have some tea.
Tsukuyomi drinks the tea Sato offers and lets out a slow breath.
Tsukuyomi: Thank you. I feel calmer now.
Tsukuyomi: That soft, melting texture in my mouth—it was almost like a sweet peach.
Tsukuyomi: But the taste itself was far from sweet.
Tsukuyomi: And then, this strange feeling, like thorns running through my nose...
Sato: Haha, yeah, that's the difference. A chili's spiciness is one thing, but the kick you get from wasabi is something else entirely.
Tsukuyomi: Ah, so this is the "kick"... If it is neither sweet nor spicy, then what flavor is it?
Sato: Hmm? Uh... wasabi flavor?
Tsukuyomi: I see... Wasabi flavor.
Tsukuyomi: Ah... The taste surprised me, but it was not unpleasant.
Tsukuyomi: In fact... I might like to try it again.
Sato: Nice, you've got potential. Oh—by the way, I never got your name.
Tsukuyomi: I am Tsukuyomi, a primal beast who came out of Dharma.
Sato: I'm Ninja Sato the Brilliant Beauty, but call me Satty.
Tsukuyomi: A Brilliant Beauty Ninja... As with wasabi, this is a new name to my ears.
Sato: Yeah, guess I'm still not famous enough yet. But it's an important title, so remember it, okay?
Tsukuyomi: Understood. Ninja Satty the Brilliant Beauty.
Tsukuyomi: Tell me, do all Brilliant Beauty Ninjas in the skies carry wasabi with them?
Sato: Hmm, dunno. It's not exactly trail rations, so probably not your average ninja thing.
Sato: But soon I'll be a legendary ninja known across the skies, right?
Sato: So naturally, the elite ninjas will all start carrying wasabi too. Total trend in the making.
Tsukuyomi: I see. So by carrying wasabi, a Brilliant Beauty Ninja shapes common sense itself.
Tsukuyomi: Thank you. It's always nice to learn new things about the Sky Realm.
Sato: Love it. All right, Tsu-tsu—looking forward to hanging out more.
Tsukuyomi: Um... Tsu-tsu?
Sato: Your nickname! Cute, huh?
Tsukuyomi: Understood. From now on, I am Tsu-tsu to you.
Tsukuyomi: Then, as thanks for teaching me about wasabi flavor, is there anything I can do for you?
Sato: Yeah. Next time we stop at an island, come shopping with me. Gotta restock my wasabi supply, or I'm toast.
Tsukuyomi: Understood. Shopping is within my capabilities.
Sato: We'd be going for fun, not as an errand. We'll grab wasabi and something sweet for you too.
Tsukuyomi: Will there be peaches?
Sato: Hmm, probably. If not, we'll keep looking till we find some.
Tsukuyomi: ...! Sweet, juicy peach babies... I'm looking forward to it.
Sato: Heh, deal. Oh, and we can try extra-spicy manju too—highly recommended.
Sato continues to include Tsukuyomi in her flavor adventures.
In time, stories about Tsukuyomi's newfound talent for food critique begin circulating on the Grandcypher.
