Happy Birthday Cutscenes
# Link Text

H-happy birthday...
C-Captain, w-we all got together and prepared a party for you...
I... I mean Nightmare and I... we made some cake.
A-and you know this cake? It's made especially for you, okay?
S-so I really hope you enjoy it.

(Captain)... H-happy birthday!
I just wanted you to know... I... I'm so happy to have met you, (Captain)!
Ever since my grandma passed away, Nightmare and I have been all alone...
But ever since meeting up with you, every day has been so much fun!
So I...
I want to thank your parents for giving birth to you.
Teehee... I wonder if I'll get the chance someday.

Happy birthday, (Captain).
I-I'll make any of your wishes come true today!
T-tell me your wishes... I'll do my best to please you...
I can give you a shoulder rub, mow the lawn... or anything else you want!
A-anything more off-kilter is perfectly fine too!
So... A-ask away!

Today's your birthday, isn't it?
Happy birthday, (Captain).
Um... I know everyone w-wants to celebrate your birthday, but...
C-can I have you... all to myself for just a bit?
R-really? Hurray!
So what should we do?
I put together some cake and presents for you...
Which do you want first, (Captain)?

Happy birthday, (Captain).
Are you... happy that you're growing up?
I-I wasn't very happy about growing up before, you know...
It made me sad to think that I was just going to continue living my life... all by myself...
But then I met you, (Captain)... and made so many new friends. Now I'm really happy!
You gave me hope, (Captain). You're like the sunshine after rain...
I don't really like the sun... But if you're the sun... then maybe I can grow to like it.
Oh, by l-like I don't mean... You know.... A-anyway!
U-um, I hope we can continue traveling together from here on out, (Captain)!

Happy New Year Cutscenes

Nightmare: Yo, Captain! You ready to party like there's no tomorrow?
Anna: (Captain)... Um, if you have some time for the New Year's party...
Huh, really? Yay!
But wait... I, erm...
Not with everyone... But just you, me, and Nightmare...

(Captain)... My grandma always said that plans for the following year start on New Year's...
So I, umm, I...
I wanted to be the first to wish you a happy New Year!
I... I hope I get to travel with you this year too, (Captain)...

Anna: H-h-happy New Year!
Um... I hope that was the best one you heard today?
Nightmare: Heck, you stayed up all night waitin' to say it! Course it was the best!
Anna: N-Nightmare... Erm, it's not a big deal...
I just wanted to be (Captain)'s best...
Because I want to be with (Captain) this year too!
That's my way of wishing for good luck...
I... I'll be here to give you the best New Year's wish next year too, so...
Here's to another good year!

Mmm... Zzz...
Mmm... (Captain)...
Uh, h-h-how come you're here, (Captain)...
Oh... That's right... I wanted to wish you a happy New Year's...
And I wanted to do it before anyone else, so I stayed up all night...
But I couldn't keep waiting, and I fell asleep...
Mmm... I wanted to be your first...
Huh? You came looking for me because I didn't show up?
Really? I can still be the first to send you New Year's wishes?
I, uh... That makes me so happy!
Thank you, (Captain)...
Um, happy New Year. Hope this year's a great one!

(Captain)... H-happy New Year!
U-um... I decided on my New Year's resolution already!
I'm going to... make everyone I meet smile!
I-I'm not very good at talking, but at least I can help others with magic!
Just like you always help me and make me smile...
I-it might take me a while, but I'll do my best to keep going this year, the year after that, and the year after that!

Valentine's Day Cutscenes

(Captain)! I... I, umm... I made some chocolate...
Won't you, um... please... have some?
Phew... I'm so glad I was able to say it.

Anna: Th-this is so embarrassing, Nightmare...
Nightmare: Woman up already and hand it to (Captain) before it's too late!
Anna: I-I know, but... Eep!
C-C-C-Captain! I, umm... This is...
Sigh... Here goes. I-I made this chocolate myself!
I think it turned out really well... I hope you like it... Phew... Eheheh, I did it!

Anna: Look, Nightmare... (Captain)'s so popular...
Anna looks ahead to see a great big haul of chocolate in (Captain)'s arms.
Okay... I guess I'll leave mine in (Captain)'s room this year...
Maybe over here...
Nightmare: You seriously not gonna hand it over in person after how pumped up you were?
Anna: My feelings might be better conveyed if put on paper...
Hehe... I wonder what kind of face (Captain) will read it with...
I'd be so happy if I could get a response... Okay, let's head out before anyone comes—
...! (Captain)! I-I-I... Please don't get the wrong idea!
I-I definitely wasn't th-thinking that I wanted a response to my letter!
The dumbfounded captain is left behind as Anna storms out of the room.
(Captain) breaks into a smile at the sight of the small package and letter placed on the table.

Anna: (Captain)...
Um... Do you have a second now?
Th-these are... Valentine's ch-chocolates.
They're... sweeter than I th-thought, so uh...
I figured it would be b-better if you had tea, and...
Nightmare: You should get together with Anna for a cup of tea!
Anna: Nightmare!
N-no! Th-that's wrong... Er, I uh, mean that...
R-really, I wanted to be the one to say it.
So, uh...
Wanna have tea with me?

Anna: U-um, (Captain)!
Would you like some... Valentine's chocolate?
I just, um... made too many, so if you don't mind...
There are lots of different kinds too! So, if it's not too much trouble, could you try each one... and let me know what you think?
Nightmare: We'll get some tea ready too, so it'll be a tea party!
Anna: I want to learn more about the kinds of things you like.
Tell me which ones taste good, okay? I'll make lots of those ones next year!

Anna: Gasp! Wh-what is this, Captain? Huh? Th-this is... for me?
I-in return for Valentine's?
O-oh my goodness... I-I'm so happy, but the words just won't come...
Nightmare: Yer a real stickler for the details, Cap'n!
Anna: A-are you doing this for everyone? I-I see. Of course, right...
B-but I don't suppose there's um... anything wrong with me thinking this one's especially just for me, is there?

(Captain)? Wh-what's this?
This is in return f-f-for Valentine's?
Th-thank you...
Eeep! You're making me so happy, (Captain)!
Ah! I need to lock this up with my magic and keep it safe!
Hm? Ahaha... I guess it's meant to be eaten after all...
O-okay then. I'll savor every little bite!

Anna: Hey, Nightmare... Do you think I might be a bit too selfish?
I can't stop thinking about wanting (Captain)'s response to my letter...
Nightmare: Best to keep your urges in check!
Anna: I thought so too... Huh?
Anna looks down to find a small package and a letter.
What's this package?
And a message for me?
Anna flips the letter around to find (Captain)'s name scribbled on it.
Eeeep! I-it's a letter from (Captain)!
Wh-what? Why? When did (Captain) put it here?
Anna opens up the letter in a passionate frenzy to find a message that brings her endless joy. It reads, "Always love seeing you around, Anna. Thanks for sticking with us."
"Dug the chocolates too."
Nightmare... I... I'm so happy to have met up with our captain...
(Captain), I'll keep doing my best to help you and the crew!

Anna: (Captain)? Wh-what's with the tea set?
Today's White Day? Aah, I guess so. Everyone's having a tea party then, huh...
Huuuh? It's just gonna be you and m-me alone?
Oh g-g-geez! H-hold on!
I'm way too happy, and I d-d-don't know what to do...
Nightmare: Anna's so happy she's frozen up! Hold on just one minute!
Anna: I-I'm gonna have a seat now. Let's have tea...

Hmm... Is that you, (Captain)? And is that... a present for me?
Th-thank you, (Captain)!
Wait... Why are there three treats?
For me... and Nightmare? But what about the last one?
Huh? You want to eat them together?
I-is that really okay? I know you're busy, so I don't want to waste your time...
N-no, I'm not saying I don't want to! It's the opposite! I'd love to!
Um... I'll be right back with something to drink, so d-don't go anywhere, okay?

Trick or Treat Cutscenes
# Link Text

Nightmare: Cap'n! Gimme candy!
Anna: Hehe... If you don't give us treats, then we'll give you tricks. Got it?

Trick or t-treat!
Make your choice!
Oh, d-don't worry if you don't have candy.
Just pay attention to me and I'll be nice, (Captain).

Trick or treat... B-better fork over those treats if you want to play it safe!
Erm... Everyone was having so much fun last year, so I thought I'd try it out too...
I'm a witch, so maybe I'd be good with witchy pranks...
You want to know what kind of pranks I might pull? Um, well...
I'd turn you into a puppet so that you, me, and Nightmare can have stimulating conversation.
Hehe, come to think of it, a puppet of you would be real nice...
I'm surprised I never thought of it before...
Eep! (Captain)! Your face is all pale...
So... do you like my idea of a prank?

(Captain), do you...
Do you think my clothes are festive?
I'm a w-witch, so I don't really need to dress up for Halloween, but...
Everyone is wearing special outfits. S-so I want a costume of my own...
Huh? You'll pick one out for me?
That makes me sooo happy! Can I choose yours too, (Captain)?

Anna: T-trick or treat, (Captain)!
Oh... U-um, I scared you there, didn't I?
Well... Here, you can have this stuffed toy I made... Sorry for scaring you.
I-inside the toy is some candy... Pretty cool, right?
The toy can keep you company even after you finish all the candy...
Nightmare: You better not throw it out!
Anna: S-so... I hope you'll keep it with you and treasure it!

Happy Holidays Cutscenes

Oh, um, (Captain)? Isn't the holiday season wonderful?
Listen, um, every year I usually celebrate with just Nightmare and I...
B-but this year, I was wondering if maybe... (Captain), would you like to spend the holidays with us?

Anna: It's the holiday season, so...
I, umm, have a gift for you!
Because... it's been really cold lately. A-and I thought you might like to feel warm...
Nightmare: You better not go catchin' a cold now!
Anna: I... I knit this sweater for you... I hope you like it...
You do? Yay! Aaah...
Eep! Sorry, that made me so happy...

Ah, (Captain)! That's the sweater I gave you last year!
You're wearing it!
Th-this makes me so happy!
I'll knit you a nice hat to go along with the sweater!
I hope it helps you keep warm, (Captain)...

(Captain), happy holidays.
I-I'm so happy you're wearing the present I gave you.
Th-this year I... uh...
Uh, uh... I-if we stay close, we'll be warmer...
You told me that it's toasty when you're near somebody, (Captain)...
Are you warm? G-good...
It's, um, cold out, so... Let's heat each other up.

Anna: Um... (Captain)? What's that bag in your hands?
Huh? I-it's a present for me?
Wow... A sweater and a hat! They match the ones I made you!
You made these for me? Th-thank yoouuu!
Nightmare: Now that's an awesome gift!
Anna: I-I'll treasure this forever and ever! Hehe...

Changes and Constants

Anna has trouble coming up with ideas for a new outfit to wear when visiting her grandmother's grave. With help from (Captain) and the others, she finally comes up with a new outfit inspired by Nightmare.

One day on the Grandcypher, (Captain), Lyria, and Vyrn pay Anna a visit at her room.
Vyrn: Yo, Anna! You up for some tea and cookies?
Lyria: We've brought a fresh batch from the kitchen—oh, and they're cat shaped too!
Anna's Voice: Eep! Um, o-okay, I'll be there in a second!
Anna: Heh... Hehehe... Welcome, everyone.
Any version of Anna is a crew member

The young witch's name is Anna. Having spent an extended period of time isolated from others, she has a shy disposition.
She once lived in the forest together with her grandmother.
However, once her caretaker passed, Anna had nobody left but Nightmare, her stuffed animal friend.
One day, after stumbling upon her home by chance, (Captain) and the others invited her to join the Grandcypher crew.
Anna: A different... island? You, uh... you crossed the sky to get here?
Anna: I... I've been here as long as I can remember.
Anna: I guess I'm kind of... envious.
So began the first page of a new chapter in Anna's life.
On that day, a young recluse flew her sylvan nest to embark on a brave new journey across the skies.
Anna: So kind of you to drop by... Please, come in!
Nightmare: Fair warning, the room's a bit untidy, but you're just gonna have to deal!
Upon entering the room, (Captain) and the others notice her floor is covered in fabric samples and crumpled sketching paper.
Vyrn: You call this a "bit untidy"? It looks like this place got hit by a tornado.
Nightmare: Yeah, well... nobody said you had to look at it!
Anna: S-sorry, I was... just trying to sew some new clothes.
Anna timidly shows (Captain) and the others a sketchbook full of drawings.
Anna: So... You remember when you said we'd be visiting my grandmother's grave, right?
Vyrn: Now that you mention it, we are gettin' pretty close to your old stomping grounds.
Lyria: Oh, I get it! You want to make a new outfit just for the occasion, right?
Nightmare: That was the idea... But little Miss Choosy-Pants over here can't even settle on a design!
Anna: I just... I want to show her how much I've changed—how much I've grown. You know?
Any version of Korwa is a crew member

Anna: I've looked into all kinds of books about tailoring and dressmaking, and even asked Korwa for help...
No version of Korwa in crew

Anna: I've looked into all kinds of books about tailoring and dressmaking, and even went around some boutiques in town...
Anna: Unfortunately, nothing really seemed to fit what I was looking for...
Lyria: I totally understand how you're feeling, Anna. You want to make sure your grandma sees you at your very best, right?
Vyrn: In that case, you can count us in on this little project too! Right, (Captain)?
The captain nods enthusiastically at the idea.
Anna: Would you really? I really don't know what to say...
Nightmare: With all our heads workin' together, we're sure to come up with a hit!
A few hours later...
Anna: Oh! How about something a little more daring, like a miniskirt?
Nightmare: Looks more like a microskirt if you ask me. Do you even have the guts to flaunt something like that in public?
Vyrn: Good point. Be a waste of time makin' fancy clothes, only for you to chicken out of wearin' them.
Anna: Th-then how about something cute and frilly? That should have some impact...
Nightmare: There's no way we'd be able to put somethin' this intricate together in just a few days!
Lyria: Plus, all that cloth's going to weigh you down... It'll probably be hard to walk.
Nightmare: Nope, nope, nope! Next idea!
Nightmare continues to reject Anna's ideas, one after another.
The discarded sketches continued to pile up in her room.
Anna: Ngh... I'm at a total loss, you guys...
Anna: I thought I'd grown during our journey, you know? Gotten more sure of myself.
Anna: But I guess... maybe I haven't changed that much after all...
Anna squeezes her sketchbooks tightly to her chest.
Sensing her anguish, (Captain) offers another angle.
  1. You don't have to force yourself to change.
  2. I liked what you wore when we first met you.

Choose: You don't have to force yourself to change.
Anna: But... I was just a dark and gloomy witch in the woods before.
Anna: It was thanks to you that I was able to come out of my shell.
Lyria: That's not true! You were always a kind and lovely person, even before we met you!
Vyrn: Yeah! Even though we ended up at your house by mistake, you were nice enough to hear us out anyway!
Vyrn: And if you ask me, that's something to be proud of! Right, (Captain)?
Anna: Yeah, you're right... Hehe.
This actually takes me back a little...
Anna: "Lovely", huh? My grandmother used to always say the same thing...

Choose: I liked what you wore when we first met you.
Anna: That dark and gloomy thing? To be honest, I do feel the most comfortable in it but... it's rather plain, don't you think?
Anna: And you guys prefer brighter, sunnier outfits anyway, right?
Lyria: That's not true!
Lyria: I mean, you're really pretty in swimsuits and bold colors, but...
Lyria: I think you look adorable in your original witch outfit too!
Vyrn: And anyways, you should wear what you wanna wear—not just stuff that's trendy, you know?
Anna: Yeah, you're right... Hehe.
All this talk's giving me déjà vu.
Anna: My grandmother always told me not to mind what other people think, and do things my own way...
Continue 1
Anna: She was always there to encourage me when I was feeling gloomy or burnt-out.
Grandma: Anna, you have a very kind and lovely heart.
Grandma: So don't ever let others prevent you from being yourself, or doing what you want to do.
Grandma: Remember to always be true to yourself.
Anna: Always be true... to myself...
Vyrn: Think you've got something?
Anna: Yeah, actually!
Although reluctant at first, Anna shows the others her newly-made clothes a few days later.
Anna: Hehe... What do you think?
Lyria: Wow... You look absolutely darling!
  1. Cat ears! Super cute.
  2. Now you and Nightmare are a pair!

Choose: Cat ears! Super cute.
Lyria: Aren't they? And they match Nightmare's too!
Anna: You noticed? I modeled them after his ears, actually...
Anna: I thought that maybe with Nightmare on my head, I could be a little more confident, you know?

Choose: Now you and Nightmare are a pair!
Anna: You noticed?
Anna: Nightmare's my best friend in the whole world...
Anna: What better inspiration for a new outfit, right?
Continue 2
Vyrn: Give us a twirl, Anna! Lookin' snazzy!
Nightmare: That goes without saying. Whole thing was modeled after me.
Anna: Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad everyone likes it.
Anna bashfully hides her face behind Nightmare.
Fortunately the stuffed animal doesn't completely obscure her face, revealing a proud smile for all to see.

Generational Magic

One day while shopping with (Captain) and the others, a young boy tells Anna that she's too old for stuffed animals. After having a nightmare of her grandmother chiding her for being childish, she decides to take matters into her own hands.

One day, (Captain) and the crew are out on the town shopping, when Anna notices something.
Anna: Oh... Look at that, Lyria. That shop has all kinds of cute stuffed animals on display...
Anna walks up to a store display, where all sorts of stuffed animals can be seen for sale.
Lyria: Wow... There's so many of them! This little kitty one looks a bit like Nightmare, don't you think?
Nightmare: Hmph! Nowhere near as cool as me though!
Anna: Hehe... Look at the adorable little outfit on this one.
Nightmare: I bet I'd look pretty dapper in it myself!
Lyria: Oh, what about the ribbon on this one? So cute, isn't it?
Anna: Ah... It's all just so lovely!
(Captain) and the others look through the various stuffed animals and creatures.
Standing by them is a young boy, seemingly admiring one of the stuffed bears on display.
Well-dressed Boy: ...
Anna: That boy over there... Is it just me, or is his gaze kind of intense?
Lyria: He seems to be staring right at that big bear. Do you think he wants it?
Anna: Perhaps. But he looks kind of restless...
Anna: M-maybe I'll try talking to him...
Vyrn: Are you sure? You don't even know the kid.
Anna: It's fine... I'm better with kids than grown-ups, I think...
Anna: And as long as I have Nightmare with me, it should be okay...
Anna timidly approaches the young boy, Nightmare in hand.
Nightmare: So you like this fella, eh? You've got good taste, kid!
Well-dressed Boy: Huh?
The boy, taken aback, glances at the two, before quickly turning to look at something else.
Well-dressed Boy: Yeah, right. Stuff like that's for babies.
Nightmare: What the—but you've been starin' at it since we got here!
Well-dressed Boy: No I wasn't! Leave me alone, lady!
The boy pushes Nightmare away before looking up at Anna.
Anna: M-me?
Well-dressed Boy: Yeah, who else? Is that your ventriloquist's dummy? Are you a street performer or something?
Anna: N-no, actually... I'm a witch, you see... Nightmare's... my friend.
Nightmare: Yeah, that's right! So you'd better be nice to her!
Well-dressed Boy: ...You're a weirdo. Aren't you too old to be playing with stuffed animals?
Anna: M-maybe... I guess I am...
Irritated, the boy lets out a heavy sigh.
Well-dressed Boy: Listen here, lady. I'm gonna teach you something.
Well-dressed Boy: When you grow up... You have to leave childish things behind like stuffed animals.
Well-dressed Boy: If you can't ever learn to let go, you'll never make anything of yourself!
Anna: Learn to let go... of Nightmare?
Well-dressed Boy: Yep. Otherwise you'll never be a real grown-up.
Vyrn: Hey, nothin' wrong with liking stuffed animals.
Vyrn: Bein' a kid or an adult shouldn't have anything to do with it!
Well-dressed Boy: Hmph! That's just something a baby would say!
Anna: Oh no...
Vyrn: There he goes... Welp, don't worry too much about him, okay?
Lyria: I'm sure if we could talk to him again, he'd be more understanding.
Anna: No... It's fine, Lyria... I get what he's saying.
Anna: ...
  1. Is it really okay?
  2. Are you worried about him?

Choose: Is it really okay?
Anna: Y-yeah, it's fine! Sorry, (Captain)...

Choose: Are you worried about him?
Anna: Something like that... But what could I even say to him?
Continue 1
Anna: (And he's probably right, anyway...)
Anna: So, um, anyway... don't worry about me!
Anna tries her hardest to put on an a smile for the captain.
However, it doesn't get past (Captain), who notices her hands, anxiously gripping the hem of her dress.
Later that night, Anna has a dream of her old home.
Anna: (Is this... Where Grandma and I lived?)
Anna: (It looks just how it did while she was still here... How long has it been?)
Anna looks around the house before finally finding a familiar face.
Anna: (Grandma... and... me?)
Dream Anna: Sniff... I... I don't want you to leave me, Grandma...
Dream Anna: I-I can't do anything all by myself...
The old woman lets out a hearty laugh in an attempt to cheer up the teary-eyed Anna.
Grandma: Don't be silly, my child... I've taught you all that I can to make sure you'll be able to fend for yourself.
Dream Anna: B-but I wasn't even able to do what you taught me right... Everyone's gonna see that I'm just a big screwup...
Grandma: I've told you a hundred times, Anna—nobody said you had to follow in my footsteps. You're free to live your life the way you want.
Grandma: Besides, you'll have Nightmare to keep you company, right?
The old woman picks up the stuffed animal sitting on the table, handing it to Anna.
Grandma: You know, Anna... I've actually put a little spell on Nightmare.
Dream Anna: A spell?
Grandma: Indeed. This spell makes it so you'll be able to express your true feelings with Nightmare.
Grandma: As long as the spell is working, you'll be able to speak from the heart with his help.
Grandma: Until you find someone you can open up to naturally, he can do your talking for you.
Anna: (That's right... Grandma always believed in me until the very end...)
Anna: (But... what did she say after that?)
Grandma: But honestly, Anna... How long do you plan on relying on Nightmare?
Anna notices her grandmother's no longer looking at dream-Anna, but directly at her now.
Anna: G-Grandma?
Grandma: It's no secret, Anna. I know that you're still relying on Nightmare to tell people how you really feel.
Grandma: Even after I've been gone for all these years... You're still playing with your toys.
Grandma: I suppose you weren't cut out to be a great witch after all.
Anna: N-no, Grandma!
Anna: Pant... Pant...
It was all just a dream?
Anna sits up in her bed, covered in a cold sweat.
Anna: She was upset with me... because I was still relying on her magic...
Anna: I knew it. I need to stop being so helpless... Right, Grandma?
Anna: I-I'll make something of myself, just watch!
A grim smile creeps across Anna's face.
She jumps out of bed, eyeing the stack of magical tomes in her room.

Generational Magic: Scene 2

(Captain) and the others find out that Anna has cast a spell on herself that makes her speak with Nightmare's voice in a misguided attempt to outgrow her stuffed animal friend. With help from the others, she attempts to recall the last words her grandmother left her with before passing.

The next day, (Captain) and the others invite Anna for tea once again.
Lyria: I wonder if Anna's still frazzled from what happened yesterday...
Vyrn: Yeah. She said not to worry about it, but I think she looked pretty bothered.
Lyria: Well, hopefully she'll feel better after some tea and cookies, right?
Lyria: Anna! We're having tea and cookies! Would you like to join us?
Nightmare's Voice?: S-sorry! I, uh... I can't come out right now, ya see...
Vyrn: Huh? That you, Nightmare?
Vyrn: What's wrong with your voice?
Lyria: Um, Anna? Can we come in?
Nightmare's Voice?: Uh, no! She's busy!
Vyrn: Whoa, hey! You okay in there?
What should we do, (Captain)?
  1. I'm worried, but let's respect her privacy.
  2. We're coming in, Anna!

Choose: I'm worried, but let's respect her privacy.
Lyria: But we haven't even heard her say anything yet! Maybe she's in trouble...
Vyrn: Yeah... Stickin' around here ain't gonna solve anything. I'm goin' in!

Choose: We're coming in, Anna!
The captain brazenly opens the door without hesitation.
Continue 1
Upon entering Anna's room, (Captain) and the others find her sitting by a mountain of books.
Nightmare?: Oh, uh... Didn't mean to make you worry...
Vyrn: Phew... We thought something happened to you!
Vyrn: Anyway, uh... What's with the Nightmare voice?
Nightmare?: N-Nightmare voice? Wh-whatever could you... mean?
Anna reluctantly begins to explain.
Anna: Th-this is the only way I can talk now...
Lyria: Wait, really? What happened?
Anna: I had a dream last night... My grandmother was upset with me...
She explains in detail about the dream she had last night.
Anna: I decided it's about time I finally did something about it.
Anna: So I cast the same spell my grandmother cast on Nightmare... on myself.
Anna: And now I'm talkin' like this for some reason...
Vyrn: You're kidding... Isn't that going a little too far?
Lyria: And I don't think your grandmother would've said something like that to you...
Anna: But she did! In my dream, she was looking right at me...
Vyrn: Okay. So let's say your granny does wanna see you a little more confident.
Vyrn: But this ain't you, is it? It's Nightmare!
Anna: Yeah... Yeah, you're right...
Anna: But I actually dunno how to break the spell...
Anna: All the tome said was once I no longer needed it, it would go away on its own...
Lyria: Oh no! Really?
Lyria: What should we do, (Captain)?
The captain ponders for a moment and asks Anna to tell stories about her past.
Anna: My past? You mean, like when my grandmother was still around?
Anna: I could do that... but why?
  1. You might remember some good advice.
  2. I think you've got it all wrong.

Choose: You might remember some good advice.
Vyrn: Yeah. I bet your nan was full of great ideas on how to grow up and be a strong independent witch.
Vyrn: If you could just dig some of that up, you won't need this dumb spell anymore and—poof—problem solved!

Choose: I think you've got it all wrong.
(Captain) explains that it's hard to believe Anna's grandmother would want her to change her personality so drastically.
Lyria: Exactly! She'd never say something like that to you!
Lyria: Think, Anna! What did your grandmother actually mean?

Anna nods meekly in response.
Anna: Well, I guess I could try again...
She closes her eyes, recalls a time past, and begins to speak.
Anna: My first memory... I'm in the forest. I'm wandering around... and I'm hungry.
Anna: I can't remember much of anything before that... or about my parents.
Anna: The only thing I remember is that they left me in the woods.
Anna: And when they abandoned me, it was Grandma who found me.
Grandma: Oh, there you are, child.
Young Anna: Um... Who are you?
Grandma: Me? Just an old witch who lives around these parts.
Grandma: I came here looking for you, actually... How'd you like to stay with me, little girl?
Anna: Then she took my hand and walked me to her house.
Anna: I learned many things from her.
Anna: She taught me not only magic, but cooking, and sewing too... We made Nightmare together.
Grandma: Wonderful, Anna. This is a lovely cat.
Grandma: Now then. What should we call this little fellow?
Anna: Ehehe... I've had a name in mind for a while now—Nightmare.
Grandma: Ah, how lovely. Well it's nice to meet you, Nightmare.
Nightmare: Put 'er there, Grandma!
Anna: He says it's very nice to meet you too.
Grandma: Hehe... Thank you, dearie. And my, what an adorable little voice he has!
Anna: As I got older, Grandma taught me more advanced spells.
Anna: I wasn't a very fast learner, but she was patient with me.
Anna: Grandma... Don't you think—I don't know—that I'm slow?
Grandma: Whatever could you mean? You're getting stronger day by day, Anna. I can see it.
Anna: It's just... I've always wanted to be a great witch. Just like you, Grandma.
Anna: But at this rate, I'm going to be 100 before I get there.
Grandma: It's a wonderful thing for a witch to have lofty goals. It's how we grow—how we soar.
Grandma: But remember. Becoming a great witch isn't about obtaining power—it's about how you use it.
Anna: How I... use it?
Grandma: It is a terrible responsibility, having great power—the consequences are sure to impact not only you, but the lives of those around you.
Grandma: I know a great samurai who was so devoted to honing his blade, he even forgot his own name.
Anna: He forgot his name? But if you know him, he must be a super strong hero, right?
Grandma: He was a hero, yes... To those suffering under the shadow of his enemies.
Grandma: But to those who took shelter under that shadow, he was nothing but a tyrant and a villain.
Grandma: Power comes with the burden of responsibility. Just because you have the ability to control something, doesn't mean you have the right.
Anna: She looked right into my eyes.
Grandma: Anna... You have great power. It's vital that you take the time to learn how and when to wield it.
Grandma: If you're serious about becoming a witch, you must train not only your magic, but your mind.
Anna: Sounds tough... But don't worry. I'll think long and hard about what kind of witch I want to be!
Anna: We lived a simple life... But we were happy.
Anna: Until one day... She didn't get out of bed.
Anna: She said that it was time for her to go.
Anna: Sniff... I... I don't want you to leave me, Grandma...
Anna: I-I can't do anything all by myself...
Grandma: Don't be silly, Anna... I've taught you all that I can to make sure you'll be able to fend for yourself.
Anna: B-but I wasn't even able to do what you taught me right... Everyone's gonna see that I'm just a big screwup...
Grandma: I've told you a hundred times, Anna—nobody said you had to follow in my footsteps. You're free to live your life the way you want.
Grandma: Besides, you'll have Nightmare to keep you company, right?
Grandma: You know, Anna... I've actually put a little spell on Nightmare.
Anna: A spell?
Grandma: Indeed. This spell makes it so you'll be able to express your true feelings with Nightmare.
Grandma: As long as the spell is working, you'll be able to speak from the heart with his help.
Grandma: Until you find someone you can open up to naturally, he can do your talking for you.
Anna: Will I really meet someone like that? I don't even wanna leave the forest...
Grandma: You'll be fine. You have a wonderful gift—the gift of a kind soul.
Grandma: Whether it's lost children, animals, or spirits, all creatures in the forest have taken a liking to you.
Grandma: It's because they can sense you're honest. That's why you're such a hesitant speaker—you're always searching for the right words.
Grandma: There's no need to rush it. Honesty is crucial for building trust...
Grandma: And it's one of the greatest powers a witch can have.
Grandma: So don't you ever, ever lose that part of yourself. Promise?
Anna: O-okay, Grandma... I promise.
Grandma: There's a good girl... I'll be watching over you with Nightmare until you no longer need to rely on me.
Grandma: So don't feel like you need to grow up too quickly. We're here for you.
Anna: Her grip on my hand was getting weaker... It was almost time.
Anna: I had to ask her about something I'd been worried about.
Anna: Grandma... Will Nightmare's spell end one day?
Grandma: Indeed it will—when you no longer need him.
Anna: Will that be... when I grow up?
Anna: To be a witch... To be my own person... Will I have to say goodbye to Nightmare?
Grandma: That's something that you'll have to decide for yourself.
Grandma: When the time comes, just listen to your heart.
Grandma: Stay true to yourself, and live life without regrets.
Anna: She gazed at me for a while longer, softly patting my head.
Anna: And then, as if entering a restful slumber, she shut her eyes for the last time.

Generational Magic: Scene 3

Upon remembering her grandmother's last words, Anna realizes that she never wants to leave Nightmare, breaking the spell. She shares her revelation with the boy from the previous day, and after hearing his story, gifts him an enchanted stuffed animal just as her grandmother had done for her.

(Captain) and the others listen intently as Anna reminisces about her grandmother.
The room has fallen silent—(Captain) is the first to speak after hearing her story.
  1. You don't need to leave Nightmare.
  2. You and Nightmare are both part of the crew.

Choose: You don't need to leave Nightmare.
Lyria: Your grandmother said to listen to your heart, didn't she?
Lyria: If you don't want to, you don't have to part with Nightmare.
Lyria: You can keep growing and adventuring—together!

Choose: You and Nightmare are both part of the crew.
Vyrn: Exactly! We're one big happy family on the Grandcypher—and that includes ol' kitty-ears.
Vyrn: You've both been traveling with us for so long, if one of you was to leave, it'd feel like somethin' was missing, you know?
Vyrn: We want you to stick with us—and stick together!

Anna: Yeah... Grandma never told me to leave Nightmare.
Anna: I just misunderstood her.
Anna: It was thanks to Nightmare that I've been able to not only survive, but thrive.
Anna: If it weren't for Nightmare, I wouldn't have been able to make that outfit the other day...
Anna: I wish I could be with him forever...
Anna: H-huh? My voice... It's back?
Lyria: Anna! You were able to break the spell!
Anna: Y-yeah, I guess so!
Anna: I think it was because I was finally able to speak from my heart... without Nightmare's help.
Vyrn: Phew... That settles that then, I guess. Nightmare, you still with us?
Nightmare: Didn't mean to make ya worry!
Anna: Thanks, you guys... for reminding me of what's important.
Anna: I actually have another favor to ask, (Captain), if you don't mind...
Anna: There's someone I'd like to talk to... Do you think you could come with me?
(Captain) nods reassuringly.
Well-dressed Boy: ...
Anna: Oh, good... I had a feeling I'd find you here today.
The boy looks up at Anna, quickly turning away upon recognizing her.
Well-dressed Boy: You again? I'm not gonna apologize for what I said!
Anna: Um... Th-that's not why I'm here!
Anna: I'm here because I never got to hear your side of the story.
Anna: You want this stuffed animal, don't you?
Anna points at the stuffed bear the boy had been staring at.
Anna: I'm guessing someone told you to grow up and quit playing with stuffed animals.
Well-dressed Boy: N-no! This is somethin' I decided on my own!
Nightmare: Listen up, kid. This girl here ain't a part of your family or nothin'!
Anna: So you don't have to worry about me telling anybody you know—it can be our secret.
Anna: So, um...
Nightmare: She's sayin' it's okay to be honest with her!
Well-dressed Boy: ...
The boy falls silent.
After some deliberation, he musters the courage to tell Anna the truth.
Well-dressed Boy: I used to have a stuffed bear of my own... I talked to it all the time.
Well-dressed Boy: But my daddy told me I needed to move on from that stuff if I'm to be the next head of our family...
Well-dressed Boy: If I kept playing with it, I'd never grow up... So I threw that bear away.
Well-dressed Boy: But then I just felt so bad... And that's why I started coming here. To find a look-alike.
Anna: You know... You remind me a bit of myself, actually.
Well-dressed Boy: Wait, really?
Anna: I loved talking with Nightmare... So much that I forgot how to talk to anyone else. Whenever we met new people, he had to speak for me.
Anna: There was a time when I thought I'd never be able to break free from my shell and leave the forest.
Anna: You know... Just earlier today, I tried to abandon Nightmare so I could grow.
Anna: But my friends helped me realize I've grown plenty with him at my side.
Anna: If anything, he gives me the confidence I need to keep moving forward.
Anna: We're family. And I know I won't ever want to leave him—even after I learn how to speak for myself.
The boy looks to the ground, clenching his fists in regret.
Well-dressed Boy: Ngh... I should've never thrown him away.
Well-dressed Boy: But I know my father only wants the best for me. What do you think I should do?
Anna thinks for a moment before an idea strikes.
Anna: Oh, I've got it! Just sit tight.
Anna runs inside the store.
She emerges shortly after, with a small bag in hand.
Anna: Here... This is for you.
Anna pulls out a small stuffed bear, about the size of her palm.
Well-dressed Boy: For... me?
Anna: Look at how small he is. No one has to know about him but you and the people you trust.
Anna: O-of course, nothing will ever replace your original friend, but... Maybe this will help.
Anna: I put a spell on him to help you be a little more honest too.
Anna: He'll be happy to lend an ear when you want to let off steam or talk about things you can't share with anyone else.
Well-dressed Boy: ...
Anna: Oh, er... If you don't like it, I'm not forcing you to take it or anything...
Well-dressed Boy: O-oh, no! That's not it! I was just thinkin' of where to hide it.
Well-dressed Boy: I've never gotten a secret present before, after all.
The boy smiles at Anna.
Well-dressed Boy: Thanks, lady. I'm gonna be a great grown-up one day, and I'm gonna do it with this little guy. Just you wait and see!
Well-dressed Boy: And when I'm a grown-up, I'll show my parents that I had a little friend with me all along.
Nightmare: Heh-heh, and that's how you do it!
That night, Anna has another dream of her grandmother.
Anna: Grandma... Do you think I'm a little closer to becoming a great witch?
Grandma: Of course. I can see you've been working very hard.
Grandma: There's a part of me that just wants you to live life as a normal girl... But, at your core, you're a witch.
Grandma: I'm proud of you, my child.
She gently pats Anna's head.
The warmth of her touch is enough to bring tears to Anna's eyes.
