Dedicated to Duty
Jin is fishing in Auguste to find food that can help Sara recover, and he's struck by how small skydwellers are compared to nature. This realization reminds him how important it is to selflessly help others, so he renews his vow to aid (Captain).
(Captain) and company find themselves running around on an island in an effort to deal with a problem caused by a primal beast. They end up fighting a swordsman named Jin over a misunderstanding, but they manage to clear it up.
Jin: Still, my erroneous belief caused so much trouble for you all.
Jin apologizes to (Captain) and company and then begs them to let him join the crew.
Jin: A long time ago, I was attacked by monsters, and a gentleman saved me. I yearned to be like him, so I chose a path of violence.
Jin: But once I became an adult, I found out just how hard life can be. And people need to eat to survive.
Jin: Before I knew it, I was claiming to want to help people, but it was really the money I was after.
Jin: And it's because of who I am that (Captain)'s willingness to selflessly help others strikes me as radiant and noble.
Jin: I would give my everything and lay down my life to help you follow that path, (Captain).
Thus (Captain) welcomes Jin as a member of the crew.
Jin ends up joining (Captain) and company during their efforts to resolve a problem caused by a primal beast. But not long after this, a girl that Jin is close to falls ill.
Jin temporarily leaves the crew to look for medicine for her.
It hasn't been that long since Jin left when (Captain) and company run into him again on Auguste.
Vyrn: Heh-heh! What a surprise! What were the odds of us bumping into you during our vacation?
Jin: I was shocked as well! I apologize for not staying in touch since I left the crew.
Jin: I received word from Sara that her health has improved and that she's left Sable Island.
Vyrn: So are you done with looking for medicine?
Jin: Yes, I think it might be more useful to help Sara grow stronger without it.
Jin: They say a healthy body needs a healthy diet, so I thought I'd bring lots of delicious food back from Auguste.
Jin: The fish from these seas are famed for their great taste after all!
Lyria: That's right! The fish cuisine here is truly delicious.
Jin: You all came here to rest for a while, right, (Captain)?
Jin: I'd like to continue fishing until you're ready to leave.
- Don't you want to hang out with us?
- So you're addicted to fishing, huh?
Choose: Don't you want to hang out with us?Jin: Well, hanging out is all well and good, but fishing is fun in its own way.
Choose: So you're addicted to fishing, huh?Jin: Ha-ha! Looks like I can't hide anything from you guys.
Continue 1Jin: You get to catch fish and have fun. It's like killing two birds with one stone. Or landing two fish with one hook.
Vyrn: So that's the score, huh? I think I'd rather just play in the water.
Jin: Hmm... I see. Well, each to their own.
Jin: Oops, it's nearly high tide. I'd better hurry up if I want to catch any fish!
(Captain)'s crew leaves Jin and goes to play on the beach.
(Captain) needs a break from all the fun and decides to go for a walk to look for Jin, who's out fishing somewhere.
Jin: Hmm... No luck at all today.
Jin: Oh? Hello there, (Captain). The fish haven't really been biting today.
Jin: Heh-heh... But fishing's fun even when you don't catch anything.
Jin: It's just you against the sea and the fish, and there's really nothing else like it.
Whoa!
Jin feels something pulling on the end of his line, but the fish slips away.
Jin: Ha-ha. Lost that one! It was a good contest nevertheless.
Jin once again baits his hook and casts his line out into the sea.
Jin: Fishing is both a contest and a dialogue with Mother Nature.
Jin: Until now I have borne the daily hardships of our world.
Jin: But fishing has taught me just how insignificant my struggles really are.
Jin: Compared to Mother Nature's great bounty, skydwellers are just specks. We must not forget that.
(Captain) and Jin sit down together on the beach and gaze out at the sea.
Jin: But you know what, (Captain)? I think the insignificance of each of us as an individual only makes the drive to help others that much more precious.
Jin: And I feel that even more keenly as I gradually detach myself from daily hardships.
Jin: Helping people without regard for any reward... Your path is a just one, (Captain), and I want you to keep on walking it.
Jin: I'll do everything in my power to make sure you can keep doing just that.
Jin puts down his fishing rod and bows deeply to (Captain).
Jin: Once more I entrust to you my life and my blade!
Jin, free from his troubles, continues his journey both for his friends and society.
And he follows (Captain) right down the same path of justice.
Kitten and Treasure
(Captain) and company find Kaz drying fish and help out, but a cat shows up just as they finish and steals a fish. Jin pursues the cat, but it's suddenly attacked by a monster, and Jin is compelled to aid the feline fish thief.
(Captain) and company travel to Auguste on a job.
Once their job is finished, they head for Venera Beach to meet with Kaz.
Jin: Long time no see, Kaz!
Kaz: If it isn't Jin! And (Captain) and the others too!
Lyria: Huh? Why are you cutting fish outside, Kaz?
Kaz: Ha-ha. I'm drying them out. Look, you just slice the belly open like this...
Vyrn: I see! So that's how you dry fish!
Jin: Are you planning to do this many by yourself? Please allow me to offer my assistance.
Lyria: Oh! I wanna help too! Are you gonna join in, (Captain)?
Kaz: I sure appreciate that! I'll take care of the cuttin', so can you guys dip them in salt water and then hang them up to dry?
Jin: Leave it to us!
(Captain) and company help Kaz prepare dried fish.
Jin: Still, these fish look like they'd be delicious even raw. It seems like overkill to dry them like this.
Kaz: Ah, but this way they'll last for days. If we kept them raw, it'd be hard to export them out of Auguste.
Lyria: Hee-hee! So the fishermen go out of their way to dry them just so that we can eat them back home!
Vyrn: Hey, did (Captain) just hang up the last one?
Kaz: Thank you all! I would never have finished this quickly without you. How about I bring you guys some tea or something?
Jin: That would be much appreciated!
Huh?
Cat: Meow.
A cat suddenly appears on the table holding one of the fish in its mouth.
Jin: Hey! Let go of that!
Jin attempts to grab the cat, but the nimble critter takes off with its prize.
Lyria: Yikes! Please! Be a good kitty and bring that back!
Cat: Meow!
Jin: Hey! You won't get away from me so easily!
Vyrn: Whoa! Jin, hold on a second!
Great. He went after it.
Lyria: Oh, that sneaky cat! We should go after it too! We have to get that fish back!
Jin: There it is! Over there!
Monster: Groar!
Cat: Meow!
Jin: Wait! Is that monster after the fish too?
Jin: And it looks like the cat refuses to back down even from a monster. That's some admirable willpower.
Jin: We're left with no other choice. We must help the cat, (Captain)!
Kitten and Treasure: Scene 2
The cat eats the fish while Jin and the others defeat the monsters. Jin plays with the cat and finds a map concealed in the cat's collar, so the crew heads to the location marked on the map in hopes of finding the cat's owner.
(Captain) and company rescue the cat and bring it back to Kaz's house.
Jin: Ugh... I can't believe the cat ate the fish while we were busy saving it.
Jin: I'm not sure if I'd describe that as bold or shrewd.
Lyria: Hee-hee! Look how round its little tummy is!
Jin: That's no surprise given how much it ate. Tell me, cat, was the fish to your liking?
Cat: Meow!
Vyrn: Ha-ha! Its stomach really is sticking out.
Kaz: I think it's happy that you saved it.
Jin: Well, little cat, just don't steal any more fish, okay? Oh, I see that you're wearing a collar, so let's see where you're from...
Jin: Huh? What's this?
Lyria: What is it, Jin?
Jin: There was a piece of paper in its collar.
Lyria: Maybe it has an address written on it in case the cat gets lost!
Jin: That may be so. Let's have a look.
Jin: Hmm... This seems to be a map. Maybe it leads to the owner's house.
Lyria: Okay, let's bring the little kitty home then!
Vyrn: Yeah, we can't just leave the cat here. Right, (Captain)?
Thus (Captain) and the crew decide to take the cat to the location indicated on the map.
Jin: Did we misread the map?
Lyria: Hmm... I don't think so. If the sea is over that way, then this should be the place.
Jin: It doesn't look like anyone lives around here...
Cat: Meow!
Jin: Hey, wait!
It ran off.
Jin: It would go against my better judgement to just leave it. Let's follow it, (Captain).
Kitten and Treasure: Scene 3
The map leads to a large pot, but a man takes the cat hostage and demands that the crew hand over the pot, which supposedly contains treasure. The crew does so and ends up entrusting the cat to Kaz shortly thereafter. Some time after the crew leaves the island, a letter from Kaz arrives, which indicates that the pot contained only a message suggesting that treasure is not so easy to find.
(Captain) and company head into a cave filled with monsters, where they discover a large pot.
Lyria: Hmm... Maybe the map was leading us to this pot?
Jin: It seems so, but for what purpose? This pot seems to have been sealed extremely well.
Vyrn: Well, since we found it and all, I guess we should take it with us.
Cat: Meow!
The cat leads everyone out of the cave in the same way that it led them in.
Jin: Hey, cat, you're walking too fast! Our legs can't move as fast as yours... Huh?
Layabout: You there! Hand over the pot!
Ruffians: ...
A man waiting just outside the cave scoops up the cat as it exits. He has a gang of thugs with him.
Jin: Who are you ruffians? Why do you want this pot?
Layabout: My old man left a valuable treasure inside that pot!
Layabout: He hid a map showing the way to the treasure in this cat's collar before he died.
Jin: What? You mean it's a treasure map?
As Jin and the man speak, the cat gets agitated and scratches his arm.
Layabout: Ouch! Why you little!
Jin: Wait! Don't hurt the cat! We'll hand over the pot, so please let the cat go.
Layabout: Oh yeah? You're smarter than you look. Here, take your nasty hair ball already.
Jin: Okay. We'll just leave the pot here and go.
Layabout: Fine! Just hurry up and get outta here!
Jin: Let's go, (Captain). I don't think a dispute with these ruffians would end well.
Vyrn: Phew, that had my heart racing! I'm glad we got away without a fight!
Vyrn: Heh-heh! Wouldn't have minded gettin' hold of some of that treasure though.
Jin: Self-respect is worth far more than any treasure. This cat is living proof of that.
Lyria: Hee-hee. Good kitty. But I guess we can't take it with us on our travels...
Kaz: Hmm... Then I'd be more than happy to look after the cat here.
Jin: Really? Are you sure it wouldn't pose a problem, Kaz?
Kaz: Living alone gets lonely sometimes. I could use someone to talk to, you know? And it'd never go hungry here.
Jin: I'm in your debt! Did you hear that, cat? Just think of all the fish you'll be able to eat!
Cat: Meow!
Thus the crew leaves the cat in Kaz's care.
Some time after the crew leaves Auguste, a letter arrives from Kaz.
Lyria: Hey, Jin! Did he write anything about the cat?
Jin: Yes, it seems to be doing well. He also heard from a fellow fisherman about what became of that pot.
Jin: The father of the man we gave it to apparently left no treasure in it at all.
Vyrn: No way! So what was in it?
Jin: Just a note that warned not to expect fortune to fall into your lap so easily.
Lyria: I see. So it was a message he left for his son.
Jin: It would seem his father was a man worthy of greatness. I would have liked to have met him when he was still alive.
Jin: Well, (Captain)! Let us continue to strive toward greatness on our own journey!
Jin enjoys the lively days journeying with (Captain) and the rest of the crew.
But perhaps Jin's eagerness to help those in need, regardless of whether they're cats or people, shows that he already possesses the greatness he respected in his youth.
