Happy Birthday Cutscenes
# Link Text
1

So today's your birthday, eh?
Cain was making a big fuss about it. I just happened to hear him.
You have any friends around you who you wish, deep down inside, will celebrate the occasion with you?
I see... Consider yourself lucky and blessed.
Too often we don't realize what we have until we've lost it.
Treasure those friendships, (Captain). I'm sure you can do that much.

2

Sure is noisy today...
Yeah, I know. It's your birthday, right?
It's fine. I kinda like it actually.
his is proof of how much we all look up to you, (Captain).
You've got the greatest friends right here...
With pals who'll follow you wherever you go, I think you're gonna get very far in life, (Captain).

3

Today's your birthday, isn't it, (Captain)?
Seeing all the hubbub, I can't help but think about the past.
No, it's not annoying. Just remembering all the past parties we used to have back in the day.
My friends would gather together and celebrate any occasion we got.
Of course, we kept the drink flowing too. That was probably the Draph in us.
Speaking of, here's to your health, (Captain). Hope this birthday beats 'em all.

4

Your birthday party is as boisterous as ever.
It wouldn't feel right to let your birthday go by quietly though.
It's important to give thanks for your life so far and wish for happiness in the future.
Plus, there are so many people here eager to celebrate you—you'd be letting 'em down if you didn't party it up. That's your duty as the skyfarer of the hour.
I can get how you might be a little embarrassed over all the fuss.
But it feels good too, doesn't it? You'll just hafta accept some extra attention for today.
From me too. Happy birthday, (Captain). Here's to another great year together.

5

This is quite the party. Is it just me, or is it even bigger than last year's?
Well, makes sense. Crew's been growing steadily.
At this rate, you're going be able to build your own country.
Wouldn't that be a sight to see? Wonder what kind of ruler you'd make.
All I know is, you'd be someone I'd consider serving under... Maybe.
Right now, I just want to see how high you can climb.
Let me know if you ever need help. No matter what happens, I'm always on your side.

1

Many in the crew are just eating up this New Year's celebration...
But if you ask me, this is precisely the time we should have our wits about ourselves.
I know it's a time for festivities what with it being a new year and all...
But when the entire town is too busy making merry, arrant knaves will see the town as ripe for the plucking.
Surely you wouldn't want to be caught up in any of that.
Nor would I want those close to me to be met with such harm. Be careful out there.

2

Happy New Year. Time just flies by, doesn't it?
Let's see...
Hm? You wanna know my plans for later?
Nothing much. I'll be training in the mountains like always.
Breaking out a good sweat while taking in the fresh air's not a bad way to start the new year.

3

Well, well, looks like a new year is upon us. Last year was a pretty tough one though.
Hope this year goes smoother. Guess that might be hoping too much.
In any case today is an auspicious occasion.
You should take the day off, (Captain), and try to recharge.
Cain and the others have put out a New Year's spread. I'm gonna head off to some training now, but I'll see you at the feast later, yeah?
What's with the face? You want me to rest too?
Nah, I get restless if I'm not doing something. I'll be more relaxed if I'm moving.
You might think I'm a disagreeable kind of guy, but I promise I've got your back this year.

4

Huh? (Captain)?
What are you doing here first thing in the morning? If you wanna wish for good luck, this year's lucky direction is—
You've been waiting for me so you could join me for my morning exercises?
Haha... I guess you know my training regimen by now. New Year's or not, I've gotta put in the time every day.
I do it 'cause I have to, though. You didn't have to get up this early just for me.
Enh. I guess I don't mind the company.
Let's greet the new year drenched in honest sweat.
Oops, almost forgot my manners. Happy New Year, (Captain). Lookin' forward to the next one.

5

Hey. Thought you'd come. You here for conditioning?
Used to be that I trained alone on New Year's...
I'm not complaining. Happy to spend time with you.
And some of these drills are better with two people.
Just thought I should do something to thank you for your help. So I made lunch boxes.
Good thing about New Year's food is that it tastes fine even when cold.
Tell you what. First break, we'll have a picnic right on the peak of that mountain.

This chocolate's for me? Heh, you're really somethin' else, you know that?
I'm not some hopeless brat anymore. Don't expect me to fall head over heels just for this.
But I'll gladly accept it as a token of appreciation.
Thank you. I'm actually quite fond of sweets even if I might not look it.

2

So you made chocolates this year too...
Sorry for the trouble. I'll be sure to savor 'em.
As a Draph, I can hold my liquor pretty well.
The next time I have a drink, I'll be sure to indulge in a few of these.

3

What's up, (Captain)? Heard you were looking for me. What has that idiot Cain done now?
Chocolate? Oh right, it's Valentine's Day. Thanks, I appreciate it.
Oh, what's up with my bags? I plan on camping out in the mountains for two or three days.
If I don't focus on improving myself from time to time I can feel my strength starting to slip away.
But while I'm up there, I'll be sure to snack on your present.
Knowing you put a lot of thought in making it for me will give me the energy I need to push through my training.

4

Chocolate liqueur? Huh. I'd never even heard of such a thing.
Thanks. You must've gone to some trouble to find me something I'd like.
So... Are you free tonight, (Captain)?
If so, why don't you join me? Your gift won't taste as good if I open it by myself.
Chill. I'm not about to pressure a minor into drinking. There'll be juice and milk for you.
And some snacks, of course. If I go grab supplies now, I'll have time to make a bunch.
This is a special occasion, so we'll celebrate all night.

5

Right, it's Valentine's. Thanks for this.
What? These chocolates'll pair well with my favorite drink, hunh...
You... know way too much about alcohol for a kid.
But I can see you growing into a hell of an adult.
I'll tell you then how your chocolates made me feel.
Don't know how many years into the future that'll be, but I'm with you the whole way.
I appreciate all this, (Captain). Really.

1

Hey, (Captain). You have a few minutes after this?
Don't look so glum. I just wanted to give a little something back since it's White Day.
I racked my brain trying to think of a good present.
Couldn't really make up my mind, so I thought I'd just whip up something. Except making chocolate's not exactly my forte...
I know the food in front of you isn't the most sightly thing, but I hope you'll enjoy it nonetheless.

2

(Captain), you have a sec?
I've got a White Day gift for you.
I made them myself this year. Figured it's only right after getting all those tasty chocolates from you.
The process was different from what I'm used to in the kitchen, so some of these treats ended up getting a bit burnt.
But I guarantee you they taste great. Hope you enjoy them.

3

Here you are, (Captain).
Hold out your hand. Here's a thank you gift for the Valentine's chocolate. It is White Day, after all.
Last year's present was, well, let's call it rough around the edges, but I promise this year's is better. Trust me.
Bet you've got a ton of gifts from the other crew members, huh? You can save mine for later then.
It won't spoil that easily. Eat it whenever you're feeling peckish.

4

Headed out, (Captain)?
I wanted to thank you for that chocolate liqueur you gave me.
I might've gotten a little carried away making your gift. It's... more intricate than I was aiming for.
Unfortunately, I don't think I can move it without wrecking it, so I was hoping you could come eat it.
Well, whenever you have the time. It should keep for two or three days.
What? You'll hurry back? I mean, you don't have to...
Haha, okay, I get it. Well, me and the cake'll be waiting.

5

Right on time.
Not like me to be sending out invitations, but I didn't want to double-book you like last year.
Thinking back, I haven't acted much like me since we met. All this baking and entertaining guests...
It's not bad though. The thought of your happy face makes the work go by faster.
Well, I'm sure you're hungry. Enough with the small talk.
Let's get going.
Sorry, I got just as caught up as last year. There's too much for me to carry. Just eat what you can.

Halloween, eh? The dead are said to return on this day.
I've never been one for festivities, but many in my unit absolutely adored Halloween.
A bunch of the ones who've died on the field would go for a bottle of the good stuff and party on as if there were no tomorrow every chance they got.
And when they come back to visit, they're gonna have a word with me if they see me down in the dumps.
So we need to celebrate today, (Captain)—hardcore. I can think of no better way to thank them for all they've done.

2

Everything okay? Today's Halloween. Don't worry about me—you go on and enjoy yourself.
I'll just be watching from here. Don't mind me.
Oh, no, I don't mean to get in the way of you guys having fun.
It's just this is how I've always handled things since the days I had my own unit.
Was always my place to watch everyone having fun from afar.
Somehow today just reminds me of those times. So, yeah, I'm just gonna take it easy here.

3

Hey, (Captain). You seen Cain nearby?
He keeps trying to push a costume on me, so I'm trying to keep my distance.
I like having a good time as much as the next guy, but I'm not a fan of heading out just to look at crowds.
And that goes double for days like today. Wonder how much longer I've gotta hide from him.
You know what, never mind. I know he's not going to give up until he convinces me to go.
If you could drink yet, I'd invite you out with us, but I guess that'll have to come later.
Maybe we could talk here for a bit instead? Probably just the pumpkin juice getting to my head, but I wouldn't mind a chat.

4

Heh... That's quite the costume. You're really into Halloween, aren't you?
Cain finally pinned me down this year...
He outmaneuvered me, I'll admit. This is why thinkers are such a pain...
It's my fault for letting my guard down, I guess. I underestimated his stubbornness. At least he let me out of wearing a costume.
Well, no use griping. Just gotta hunker down and prepare myself for the worst.
I'm about to head into town with Cain. Wanna come with us? It's only Halloween once a year. Might as well enjoy it.

5

Sigh... Well, here I am in town. Cain forced me out here again.
I planned to spend Halloween with my best vintage, but that's not happening now.
Thought I made it clear I don't like taking orders.
But this isn't too bad. You, me, Cain... We're comrades. We've gone to hell and back together.
You know, since I'm here, why don't I run wild? Get Cain so embarrassed, he'll wish he left me alone.
Who am I kidding? I don't have it in me.

1

Good timing, (Captain). Here's your present. Catch.
You look surprised... I know it's not like me to partake in this gift-giving thing.
But there were more than a few fathers in my unit back in the day.
We all chipped in to give those little shrimps presents whenever the occasion arose.
So preparing presents for you all takes me back to those days...

2

Hm? Kind of surprising to see you here, (Captain).
Me? I'm out here on a grocery run.
Meat, vegetables, wheat, and what have you... They asked me to help out in the kitchen.
You know how tonight's that special night? Well, they needed more people to help prepare tonight's feast.
I'm not a real chef by any means, but I'm somewhat of a halfway-decent cook, and my muscles are better put to use with these sorts of errands anyway.
Wasn't too keen on it at first...
But seeing how gung-ho everyone was reminded me of how I used to do things back in the day.
So I can't go around town with you right now, but you can look forward to some good food later.

3

Hey there, (Captain). Sorry, but I'm kinda in a hurry right now.
The kitchen's been having some trouble. Apparently there's not enough cake to go around; someone didn't make a proper head count.
There's not enough ingredients left to complete the job, so I'm off to fetch more.
Huh? You want to join me? Nah, not necessary. I can handle it on my own.
It's chilly, so you might catch a cold.
Fine, fine. Just stop glaring at me. Guess it would be more efficient to have you along anyway.
Since you're going through the trouble, let me know if there's something you want. I'll get it for you as a thank you present.

4

What's this, (Captain)? A present for me?
What a conscientious captain.
I'm not a kid though. You should save the gifts for the children on the crew.
Hey, wait. Don't make those puppy eyes at me. I'm sorry. I'm not rejecting your gift.
All I meant is that the kids would appreciate it more—the shine's still on the apple for them.
My communication skills are failing me today, sorry. Here. This isn't an apology—just a gift.
Yeah... I thought you should have something for the holiday. If you're not too mad at me, go ahead and take it.

5

This my holiday present? You never miss a year, do you?
No, I appreciate it. And I've gotten used to your sentimentality.
I got you something too. Take it.
What do you mean, I didn't have to? You're a kid.
And you care about an old boor like me. If there really were a "nice list", you'd be right on top.
Happy holidays, (Captain).

Blue Period

Reinhardtzar, Cain, and Leona meet an old man who calls Reinhardtzar a "Rekki user." In fact, Reinhardtzar is the scion of a long line of Torhid Kingdom royal retainers who used this fearsome power which endangers the life of its user. As a new recruit in the Torhid Army, he was put through draconian training to awaken that power, though he didn't realize the training's purpose until Abel risked court-martial to tell him, beginning an unlikely friendship.

After Pholia abdicated her throne, her country was reborn as the Republic of Idelva.
Years of conflict ceded to peace and stability at last.
Some time has passed since this sea change. In a palace without a sovereign, a lone man stands lost in thought.
Reinhardtzar: ...
Cain: Yo, Reinhardtzar. What are you and that long face up to?
Reinhardtzar: Oh, it's you. I'm not up to anything.
Reinhardtzar: But since you're here, there's something I'd like to ask you.
Cain: Why so formal? Shoot.
Reinhardtzar: You said you were leaving Idelva. I assume your plans haven't changed?
Cain's expression turns serious.
Cain: If this country is truly going to belong to all its people, then we can't be here.
Cain: We're too tightly linked to the way things were run before.
Cain: They're setting up a new system of government, and it'd be naive to think we could contribute like normal citizens.
Cain: Whether we liked it or not, some people would want us to take the reins, given our distinguished service.
Cain: Others might try to use our names to drum up votes for themselves.
Cain: That's not what Pholia wanted for the country... It's not what we worked for.
Pholia acted as Idelva's sovereign while hiding a sin from its people.
When that secret stoked the flames of war, however, she resolved to abdicate.
Pholia: I hereby renounce my position as sovereign of Idelva Kingdom.
Pholia: I give this land back to you—the people.
As punishment for her trespass, Pholia was exiled from Idelva in perpetuity.
That punishment was in fact devised by Cain in order to protect Pholia, but few people were aware of the true intention behind it.
Reinhardtzar: I see. I guess that's fine then.
Cain: Geez, what's with you lately? If you've got something to say, just—
Leona: Cain. Reinhardtzar.
Leona, Cain's second-in-command, walks up to the pair.
Leona: Do the two of you have a moment? There's someone I'd like you to meet.
Leona: We've arrested a senior citizen with no form of identification on him. It sounds like he may have had something to do with the Torhid Kingdom though.
Cain: What are you talking about, Leo?
What is now the Republic of Idelva, and was formerly the Idelva Kingdom, was in turn preceded by the Torhid Kingdom.
Leona: Apparently he looks like someone who used to visit the Torhid royal palace.
Leona: I don't recognize him myself, but I thought one of you might.
Oldster: How dare they lock me up like this... Who do they think they are? Idiots... This country has gone to the dogs...
Cain: Eugh! Did you bathe in whiskey? I can smell you from here!
Oldster: Another ill-mannered young whippersnapper... No respect for their elders... Who raised these little hellions?
Leona: Um, sir? You can go home soon, but...
From the blank expression on the old man's face, it's difficult to tell how much of what they're saying is registering.
Leona: So, do either of you recognize him?
Cain: Nope. I wasn't posted at the castle back then though.
Reinhardtzar: He's a stranger to me. But it's not like I was the most connected person.
Leona: Yeah, that's true... Just because you worked at the palace doesn't mean you'd know everyone who came and went.
Leona: Sir? Sorry for keeping you so long. You can go home now.
Leona: I'll send a soldier to escort you. Where are you headed?
Oldster: ...!
Leona: Sir? Is something wrong?
The old man's eyes lock onto Reinhardtzar. He begins to tremble.
Reinhardtzar: Huh?
Oldster: Finally... I finally found you! The Torhid Kingdom's secret weapon!
Oldster: You have to help restore the Torhid Kingdom! It's your duty!
Oldster: Your duty as a Rekki user!
Reinhardtzar: ...!
Oldster: That strength of yours, which makes you an army unto yourself—it is the strength born of loyalty, passed down in Torhid since before the War!
Oldster: You wouldn't stoop to wielding that power for your own selfish purposes, would you?
The man is frothing at the mouth as he advances on Reinhardtzar—who remains silent.
Old memories resurface unbidden.
This was in the Torhid Kingdom's heyday, when it was one of the greatest powers in the Nalhegrande Skydom.
Reinhardtzar—then a new recruit—was put through a grueling solo training regimen high in the mountains.
Reinhardtzar: Pant... Pant...
Major Payne: No resting! It doesn't count as training unless you're sweating blood!
Captain Dufresne: Hunh! Not much of a soldier, but you're a hell of an actor when you want a break.
Reinhardtzar: Captain... I've been wanting to ask for a while. Just what is this training for?
Reinhardtzar: Why am I training alone instead of with my unit? Why empty-handed and not with a weapon?
Reinhardtzar: Every single day, driving my fingers into trees, scaling cliffs with weights strapped to my back...
Reinhardtzar: All I did was enlist in the army—I don't remember begging some mountain hermit to make me his disciple.
Captain Dufresne: All right, I was wrong. You're also a professional-level whiner. But fine, I'll answer your questions. It's because you're a failure.
Reinhardtzar: Hunh...
Captain Dufresne: What's with that attitude?
Major Payne: Don't get distracted with meaningless questions, Reinhardtzar! You're not here to think—just do what you're told!
As a lowly recruit, Reinhardtzar has no choice but to obey his superiors' orders and continue with his draconian training in spite of his reservations.
One day, however, his instructors leave him alone for a while.
As he practices his drills, Reinhardtzar becomes aware of a presence in the direction of a nearby thicket. Instinctively, he assumes a defensive stance.
Reinhardtzar: A monster?
???: Nope. You can relax.
???: You're Reinhardtzar, aren't you?
Reinhardtzar: I saw you at the intake ceremony. You're Lieutenant Abel, right?
Even among the Torhid Kingdom Army, this man is known for his affability.
Abel: No need for formalities. Just call me Abel.
Reinhardtzar: I was told not to talk to anyone but my instructors until training was over...
Abel: Yeah, which means I'm breaking the rules here. So do me a favor and keep your voice down so I don't get caught.
Reinhardtzar: I might. Depends on your reasons. What's so important that you're risking disciplinary action to come here?
Abel looks the wary recruit straight in the eye.
Abel: Okay, I want you to listen closely. You need to get out of here immediately. If you don't, it may cost you your life.
Reinhardtzar: What?
Abel: This training they're putting you through is supposed to awaken a power called Rekki.
Reinhardtzar: My instructors didn't say anything about that.
Abel: I'll bet they didn't. It's a dangerous ability. And mishandling it can be fatal.
Abel: Long ago, in their thirst for power, the Torhid Kingdom began conducting secretive experiments on a certain family of royal retainers.
Abel: The modifications they made to these people allowed them to summon supernatural strength. That was the birth of Rekki.
Abel: Rekki users were the Torhid Kingdom's ultimate weapon. They allowed Torhid to gain supremacy in Nalhegrande.
Abel: But Rekki endangers the user's life. The more someone uses it, the more it eats away at their body.
Abel: Which is why over many years, that family of users died out... Or so everyone thought.
Abel: Until you showed up. When they were doing background searches on the new recruits, the army brass realized you were part of that bloodline.
Reinhardtzar: I am?
Abel: In this day and age, you can't have as much of that blood in your veins as the users of old, but even so, you've got an incredible aptitude for that power. You could be developed into quite the weapon.
Abel: The training methods necessary to awaken the Rekki lying dormant in your blood have been passed down in Torhid. That's what they're using on you now.
Reinhardtzar: I don't get it. Why wouldn't they tell me that?
Abel: Like I said, it's dangerous. The best way I can describe Rekki would be as an explosive compound that is also a deadly poison.
Abel: Summoning Rekki even once will unlock an explosive power.
Abel: But to control it takes long, rigorous training and an iron will.
Abel: If you can't control it, it'll destroy you from the inside, like the most potent poison.
Reinhardtzar: Hah... So they figured I'd piss myself over the risks and go running off into the night.
Abel: They want to awaken your Rekki without your knowledge, so you don't even have the option of turning back.
Abel: I couldn't just let that happen, even if it meant disobeying orders.
Abel: As soon as you joined the army, you became one of us. Using a comrade up and throwing them away is unforgivable.
Abel: I'll find some way to sort things out afterward, so you just get the hell out of—
Reinhardtzar: Nah. I'm gonna see this through.
Abel: What? Were you listening to what I just said?
Abel is aghast, but Reinhardtzar is calm as ever.
Reinhardtzar: I've been an orphan for as long as I can remember. No parents, no siblings. I spent my childhood being shunted from one place to another.
Abel: ...?
Reinhardtzar: I wasn't welcome anywhere I went. I thought no one would ever have any use for me.
Reinhardtzar: But thanks to all that, I learned early what life is all about.
Abel: What do you mean?
Reinhardtzar: The meaning of life is to be needed by others. It is to me, at least.
Reinhardtzar: If the army needs this Rekki, or whatever it's called, and I've got it in me, then I'll figure out how to use it. Doesn't matter if it's dangerous.
Reinhardtzar: I'll do it to prove to myself that there's a reason I exist. The country's motivations don't make a lick of difference to me.
Abel: You...
Abel: Awakening Rekki is like inviting a wild animal to live inside your body.
Abel: And you don't get to change your mind down the line and return that beast to the woods! You're stuck with it for life!
Reinhardtzar: Heh. Fine by me. I could use a pet. Maybe I'll teach it to roll over and play fetch.
Abel: ...
It takes Abel a moment to pick his jaw up off the ground.
Abel: There's something not right about you. You're about a rupie short of the lunch special.
Reinhardtzar: Pfft. Look who's talking. I'd say you're the one acting irrational.
Reinhardtzar: Why warn me? If I do have this power, it'll be good for the army. You're an officer. Don't you want what's best for the troops?
Abel: That's not the issue. I didn't like how they were going about it.
Reinhardtzar: Is that all? That's your whole reason for betraying the army?
Abel: Yeah. You got a problem with that?
Reinhardtzar: Nah... I'd heard you were an odd duck, Abel. Sure enough, you are.
Abel: Yeah... I get that a lot.
Abel scratches his head, seemingly at a loss as to why this opinion is so common.
Abel: Anyway... I'm not giving up.
Abel: Your life is still being recklessly endangered. I'll keep coming here until I convince you to leave.
Reinhardtzar: If that's how you wanna waste your time. I don't think you're gonna convince me.
Abel: Oh, boy... This is gonna be rough, isn't it?
Abel and Reinhardtzar each came away with the same first impression of the other: "What a weirdo."
Each was also certain that the other had been entirely frank about his own convictions.
However...
Captain Dufresne: ...
Neither had noticed that their conversation was observed from the nearby shadows.

Battle of Wills

Abel repeatedly attempts to convince Reinhardtzar to abandon his Rekki training for his own safety, but Reinhardtzar continues because he wants to be needed, and the army needs his power. Over time, the two men open up to each other. When Abel realizes Reinhardtzar cannot be swayed, Abel instead invites Reinhardtzar to join his unit, since the young soldier has grown on him.

As a young recruit in the Torhid Kingdom's army, Reinhardtzar was put through grueling training in order to unlock his potential as a Rekki user.
His training was supposed to be conducted in solitude, but along the way, he acquired a frequent, clandestine visitor.
Reinhardtzar: Back again, huh? Do you understand how military regulations work?
Abel: Of course I do. That's why I only come when your instructors are looking the other way.
Abel: You're looking pretty ragged. Are you ready to call it quits yet?
Reinhardtzar: Pfft. Keep dreaming.
Reinhardtzar: By the way, the two of them came clean about what Rekki is recently. Of course, I told them I'd keep training.
Abel: For crying out loud... I don't know what they're playing at, but you need to come to your senses.
Knowing the dangers inherent in the use of Rekki, Abel has been trying to convince Reinhardtzar to desert the army and save himself.
Reinhardtzar: I had a day off yesterday, so I went down the mountain into town. I saw you at a restaurant.
Abel: A restaurant? Oh, that's right. I did go out to eat yesterday. I didn't notice you. Why didn't you say hello?
Reinhardtzar: It looked like you were on a date. I didn't want to intrude, so I left before they seated me.
Abel: Haha! How thoughtful of you!
Abel: I feel bad making you go to a different restaurant though. How about I treat you to a meal to make up for it?
Abel: I bet you were there because of all the buzz about their steak dinner, huh? You'll love it, it's—
Reinhardtzar: Uh, no... I wasn't. I was there for the cake.
Abel: Cake?
Reinhardtzar: Yeah, their cakes are pretty decent too. I bet you'd like them.
Abel: Oh... Yeah, sure. So you've got a sweet tooth, huh? More of a milkshake guy than a beer guy then?
Reinhardtzar: Beer's fine... Might take a swig every so often.
Abel: Got it. Well, I'm sorry you didn't get your cake yesterday. Next day you have off, let me buy you a slice.
Reinhardtzar: No need. It's not like you chased me off.
Abel: Don't be like that. I can't picture you eating cake—I wanna see it for myself now.
Reinhardtzar: Tch... You've got weird taste.
Since there is no sign of the instructors returning, the two continue their chat.
Reinhardtzar: That woman you were with... I couldn't tell for sure, since she was sitting down, but she looked unusually tall.
Abel: Ahhh... She really wouldn't like that if she heard you.
Abel: She's my fiancee. We've been busy lately planning the wedding.
Reinhardtzar: Oh yeah? Congratulations.
Reinhardtzar: Seems like a bad time for you to be risking court-martial.
Abel: That has nothing to do with this. Both things are important to me, and I'm not going to give up on either one.
Abel: Although it'd really save me some trouble if you gave up on awakening your Rekki.
Abel: Still sticking to your guns?
Reinhardtzar: You bet I am. I'm going to bring this beast to heel.
Abel: Geez... Just what I needed—another little brother who doesn't know what's good for him.
Abel: The one I have is a talented kid, but he really takes some looking after. I don't know where he gets it from...
To Reinhardtzar, who grew up with no family at all, Abel's talk of fiancees, brothers, and wedding plans might as well be a fairy tale.
And yet, this mundane, peaceful addition to his daily life is somehow soothing.
Abel: Hey, Reinhardtzar... When you're done with this training, will you join my unit?
Reinhardtzar: What?
Abel: If it were up to me, I'd rather you quit the training right now, but I can tell you have no intention of doing so.
Abel: So be it. At least if you're by my side, I can look out for you.
Abel: Besides, Rekki or no Rekki, you've grown on me.
Reinhardtzar mulls it over for a long moment.
Reinhardtzar: I'll think about it.
Abel: All right. I'll get out of your hair then. Your torturers are probably due back any minute now.
Abel: Don't get yourself killed, Reinhardtzar.
Reinhardtzar watches in silence as Abel makes his way down the mountain, until he disappears from view between the trees.

Battle of Wills: Scene 2

Having discovered Reinhardtzar's friendship with Abel, his instructors use it to destabilize him mentally, causing his slumbering Rekki to go berserk. Abel appears on the scene and attempts to help. To quell his own rampage before he can hurt Abel, Reinhardtzar gouges out his left eye. Abel punches one of the instructors and ends up taking the punishment which would otherwise have fallen on Reinhardtzar for assaulting the second instructor during his Rekki rampage.

For the last three days and three nights, Reinhardtzar has trained without sleep or even a moment's rest, until he is bloody and bruised from head to foot.
Despite the abuse to which his body has been subjected, the light in his eyes never wavers.
Reinhardtzar: All right... What's next? Gimme my... orders, Major.
Major Payne: Not a word of complaint from this guy... I've never seen anyone this tenacious.
Captain Dufresne: Tch... He's dedicated, I'll grant you that. But he needs to learn some damn respect for his superiors.
Captain Dufresne: Is all this special attention going to his head?
Major Payne: Well, cut him some slack. If he masters Rekki, we'll have a genuine super soldier on our side.
Captain Dufresne: I don't know about that. He's hardy enough physically, but what about his psyche?
Reinhardtzar: Hey, what's the holdup? What are you chattering about over there?
Captain Dufresne: Shut it! At ease, recruit!
As the two instructors mutter to each other, Reinhardtzar allows his exhausted mind to wander.
Reinhardtzar: (Got a day off tomorrow for the first time in a while... Made plans to meet up with Abel.)
Reinhardtzar: (I really don't get that guy. First he wants me to quit training, then he wants me to join his unit...)
Reinhardtzar: (Still, I don't hate the idea.)
Reinhardtzar: (When I see him tomorrow, I'll—)
Captain Dufresne: Hey! Are you listening?
Reinhardtzar: Eh?
Captain Dufresne: I asked you about Lieutenant Abel! He's been coming here to see you, hasn't he?
Reinhardtzar: You know about that, huh?
Captain Dufresne: Pfft. It was never a secret. He's your third instructor.
Reinhardtzar: What?
Major Payne: Didn't sniff that out, huh? Zero points for perspicacity, Reinhardtzar.
Captain Dufresne: What, did you think he was really your friend?
Captain Dufresne: He was here on orders. To make sure you had the commitment to see this training through.
Major Payne: If it looked like you were wavering, he was supposed to buck you up and encourage you, but it looks like that wasn't necessary.
Reinhardtzar: I don't... believe this...
Abel: Okay, I want you to listen closely. You need to get out of here immediately. If you don't, it may cost you your life.
Abel: You're looking pretty ragged. Are you ready to call it quits yet?
Abel: Still sticking to your guns?
Abel: If it were up to me, I'd rather you quit the training right now, but I can tell you have no intention of doing so.
Reinhardtzar: He came to convince me to quit.
Reinhardtzar: (So he said... But what was the result? Rather than quit, I actually...)
Reinhardtzar: No... No, that was my own decision. And anyway, Abel isn't that kind of person.
Reinhardtzar: (But he said he was coming here in secret.)
Reinhardtzar: (If the instructors knew about it, then why hasn't Abel been disciplined?)
Reinhardtzar: (Was he really in league with them from the start?)
With Reinhardtzar hovering on the brink of collapse from exhaustion, this is too much for him to process.
Captain Dufresne: What are you whining about? Did you really think you'd found someone who understood you? A friendless orphan like you?
Captain Dufresne: Your only loyalty should be to your country! That's what it means to be a soldier! If you can't manage that, you're no use to anyone!
Reinhardtzar: No use... to anyone?
Abel: For Pete's sake... You'd think I'd have mastered this trail by now, but no...
Abel is on his way up the mountain to visit Reinhardtzar.
Abel: Tomorrow is Reinhardtzar's day off... We made plans to get that cake, but the two of us doing that alone might be a little awkward...
Abel: I wonder if Leona and Cain would be free to join us...
Captain Dufresne: G-g-get back! How dare you turn on your superiors!
Abel comes to attention at the sound of panicked screams from further up the mountain.
Abel: (Oh no. Don't tell me...)
Captain Dufresne: Gyaaah!
Major Payne: Aaah...
Reinhardtzar: ...!
Abel: Are you all right? What's going on here!
Major Payne: That recruit knocked out the captain... More importantly... He's gone berserk! His Rekki is out of control!
Abel: I knew it...
Reinhardtzar: Abel... Is that you?
Abel: Yeah, I'm here! I'm standing right in front of you!
Reinhardtzar: I can't see you... Your voice sounds so far away... I feel so... hot... Am I on fire?
Abel: Get a hold of yourself! You're not actually burning—it's just an illusion caused by your Rekki!
Reinhardtzar: Abel... Where are you? I can't... hear your voice anymore... Where...
Reinhardtzar: Where are yooouuu!
Abel: ...!
Abel barely evades Reinhardtzar's punch. Reinhardtzar's fist hits the ground and the shock wave radiates outward, rattling Abel's bones and shaking the trees all around them.
Abel: Ngh! That's crazy!
Abel: (His Rekki can't be fully developed yet, and it's already that powerful?)
Reinhardtzar: What the hell... is happening to me... I feel like I'm dipping in and out of consciousness... I can't think straight...
Abel: Reinhardtzar!
Reinhardtzar: Damn it... This can't be it... This can't be what I worked so hard for!
Reinhardtzar slams his fist into the dirt. The very mountain quakes.
Reinhardtzar: This power doesn't control me. I control it. I have to.
Reinhardtzar: This isn't the power I've been working for!
Reinhardtzar: I won't accept that!
Reinhardtzar jams two fingers into his left eye.
Reinhardtzar: Aaaaggghh!
Abel: Reinhardtzar!
Reinhardtzar falls to his knees. Abel rushes over to him.
Reinhardtzar: It's fine... I... I have it under control.
Abel: What the hell did you go and do that for?
Reinhardtzar: I thought everyone knew... Pain is the best thing... to sharpen you up when you feel like you're gonna lose consciousness...
Abel: You didn't need to take it that far! Hold still, all right? I'll do what I can as far as first aid, and then we're getting you off this mountain.
Reinhardtzar: Wait... Before that... there's something I need to know.
Reinhardtzar: Tell me... the real reason why you've been coming to see me.
Abel: What?
Abel: They said I tricked you? Why the hell would I do something like that?
Abel: Coming to talk to you was insubordination pure and simple. I didn't have any ulterior motives.
Abel: I just didn't want to see the army exploit a new recruit who had no idea what he was getting into.
Reinhardtzar: Yeah... That's what I figured. I was an idiot to doubt you even for a second.
Reinhardtzar: I guess that moment of weakness was enough for the Rekki to take over. It really looked bad for me for a minute there.
Abel: No, it's not your fault. Someone was doing their best to mess with your head.
Captain Dufresne: Urrggh... What are you trying to say, Lieutenant Abel?
Abel: You found out I'd been visiting Reinhardtzar and decided to use that for your mind games.
Major Payne: Calm down, Lieutenant. Mental training is as much a part of a soldier's education as physical.
Major Payne: Reinhardtzar was unprepared and let his emotions run away with him. That's not a luxury a Rekki user can afford.
Abel: Even so, there was no need to lie to him.
Captain Dufresne: What do you know! It was a perfectly valid method of instruction! In fact, I think we were being too soft on this waste of skin!
Abel: ...!
Abel makes a lunge for the captain, but Reinhardtzar's hand on his shoulder stops him.
Reinhardtzar: Let it go, Abel. It was my fault for being so gullible.
Abel: The hell it was. If you're not going to pop them one, I'll do it for you.
Reinhardtzar: The only one I'm mad at is myself. Just the thought that you might have been manipulating me made me completely lose my cool...
Reinhardtzar: I acted like an idiot child. I won't make the same mistake twice.
Abel: ...
All right. If that's what you want.
Abel turns his back on his two superior officers, his rage seemingly cooled. Reinhardtzar lets his hand fall from Abel's shoulder.
Abel: So this isn't for Reinhardtzar—just a heartfelt gift from me!
Captain Dufresne: Bwagh!
Abel spins around and punches the captain square in the face, knocking him to the ground.
Reinhardtzar: Abel!
Major Payne: Are you insane, Lieutenant? Do you know what you're doing?
Abel: Oh yes. Couldn't be plainer.
Major Payne: You... You'll be court-martialed for this! I'll see you in solitary!
Abel: Sorry, Reinhardtzar... I probably won't be able to buy you that cake tomorrow.
Reinhardtzar: Why the hell would you go this far?
Abel: Reinhardtzar... Someday, someone's going to need you. And I'm not talking about your duty to your country.
Abel: Remember this: when that day comes, you won't be alone.
Abel was sentenced to forty days of solitary confinement for insubordination.
When Reinhardtzar finally finished his training and mastered Rekki, he headed to the army's personnel division.
He applied to join Lieutenant Abel's unit, but his request was denied.
It wasn't hard to guess what had influenced the brass's decision.

Battle of Wills: Scene 3

After relating this story about Abel to Leona and Cain, Reinhardtzar feels he has repaid his debt to Abel and announces his intention to leave Idelva on his own. He coldly rejects Cain's invitation to travel with him and Leona, though in truth Reinhardtzar is only afraid of losing control of his Rekki and hurting his friend. When he attempts to leave the country the next day, his way is barred by Cain, spouting excuses about military information security.

Reinhardtzar: Now that I think back on it...
Reinhardtzar: Abel was disciplined for hitting that instructor, but the opportunity he gave me to stop him first was crucial.
Reinhardtzar: It's the only reason I got off without serious punishment. He came out there to protect me, and he never stopped.
Reinhardtzar: I ran into him a few times after that, but I ended up in charge of my own unit... We were both busy.
Reinhardtzar: We never really got more than a few words with each other. I always thought I'd have another chance to repay him for his kindness...
Cain & Leona: ...
Leona: Yeah... I do remember him getting court-martialed and tossed in solitary out of the blue.
Cain: He said something about clocking a superior officer who pissed him off, but who'd have thought that was the full story?
It is the evening after they sent home the drunk senior citizen—who was still yelling about the restoration of the Torhid Kingdom.
Reinhardtzar asked Cain and Leona aside and has been telling them about his past with Abel.
Cain: So what do you think about what the old man was spouting?
Reinhardtzar: I don't miss the Torhid Kingdom. The only one I feel like I owe anything to is Abel.
Reinhardtzar: But that's settled now too.
Cain: ...?
Reinhardtzar is silent for a moment before he continues.
Reinhardtzar: Cain, Leona, I'm going to leave Idelva on my own. This is where we part ways.
Cain: What?
Cain: Hey, wait a minute! Where's this coming from?
Reinhardtzar: I've been thinking about this for a while.
Reinhardtzar: Cain, you've helped stabilize Idelva, and you're planning to leave soon, right?
Cain: That's right! So come with me!
Reinhardtzar: Why? You're giving up your position in the army. You won't need my services as an officer anymore.
Reinhardtzar: My obligation was to you as a general... and Abel's brother.
Cain: You're saying you only stood by my side to repay your debt to my brother?
Cain: I thought... I thought for sure you'd come with me...
Reinhardtzar: My duty is discharged. There's no other reason we should stay together.
Reinhardtzar: It would just be...
Reinhardtzar: ...
Reinhardtzar: I've told you my plans. That's all I have to say.
Cain: ...
All right, fine!
Leona: Cain!
Leona makes to follow Cain, then pauses and turns back to Reinhardtzar.
Leona: If it isn't duty, it's just friendship. That kind of sentimentality might make you lose control of your Rekki. If that happens, you could hurt Cain.
Leona: Is that what you wanted to say?
Reinhardtzar: ...
Leona: Why didn't you then? For crying out loud!
Cain and Leona disappear from view, leaving Reinhardtzar to reflect. He's done everything he feels he needs to do in this country.
Leaving the pair of them with that memory of Abel will serve as his parting gift.
The morning of his departure, Reinhardtzar cuts through a meadow on his way to the port.
Two familiar figures come into view ahead of him. Once he's within hailing distance, Reinhardtzar comes to a halt.
Cain & Leona: ...
Cain: Reinhardtzar... Are you really going to leave?
Reinhardtzar: It's time. For a lot of reasons.
Seeing Reinhardtzar has no intention of changing his mind, Cain draws his sword.
Leona: Cain, what—
Cain: Reinhardtzar... You know too much classified information for Idelva to just let you walk away.
Reinhardtzar: Hah... Beat around the bush much?
Reinhardtzar drops his luggage and raises his fists.
Reinhardtzar: You know, I'd forgotten we had that one score to settle. Let's do this.
Reinhardtzar: But once I pay you back for Merkmal Island, that's it.
Leona: Hey, stop it! There's no need for all this!
Reinhardtzar: Yeah, there's not a lot of logic to this.
Reinhardtzar: We can't back down, so we're going to fight. That's about the size of it, right, Cain?
Cain: Good to see we're on the same page. I'm not gonna hold back then.
Reinhardtzar: Looks like that one taste of victory has gone to your head.
Reinhardtzar: But in a contest of pure strength, I'll always come out on top.
Cain: Went to my head, did it? My brother said something like that to me once.
Reinhardtzar: Sounds like him.
Reinhardtzar: Let me give you another piece of advice—once you draw your sword, you lose the right to change your mind.
Cain: You're absolutely right. I'm done talking.
Cain: Here I come, Reinhardtzar!
Reinhardtzar: Let's go!

Battle of Wills: Scene 4

Reinhardtzar and Cain fight until they are both on the verge of collapse, but only stop when Leona steps between them. At Leona's urging, Cain reveals his true feelings: that he wants Reinhardtzar with him wherever he goes from now on, not as a Rekki user or an officer, but just as himself. Realizing that his long-held dream of being truly needed has come true, Reinhardtzar agrees to join Cain and Leona on their journey.

After a furious battle, Cain and Reinhardtzar fall to their knees at almost the same instant.
Cain: What's wrong? Worn out... already? I could... do this all day...
Reinhardtzar: Hah... You can't even stand. What're you gonna do to me from over there?
The two glare at each other, ready to crawl over and resume grappling on all fours if necessary, but Leona steps between them.
Leona: All right, that's enough! Are you trying to kill each other?
Cain: Leo...
Leona: Cain. Use your words like a big boy and tell him you'll miss him.
Cain: ...
Leona: You too, Reinhardtzar.
Leona: You should've just said before that you're afraid of losing control of your Rekki and hurting him.
Reinhardtzar: ...
Leona: There might be some things you can't communicate with words...
Leona: But wouldn't you know it—we have language for a reason.
Cain looks from Leona to Reinhardtzar, suddenly and utterly disarmed.
Cain: You said there was no reason for you to come along with us...
Cain: But there is.
Reinhardtzar: Oh yeah? What's that?
Cain: The ruler who inducted you into the army is gone.
Cain: Sure, the whole reason I got so used to having you by my side was because we were comrades in the military.
Cain: But from now on, it'll be a different story.
Cain: I need you, Reinhardtzar. I don't need a Rekki user, or an officer of Idelva...
Cain: Just you. Wherever I go, I want you there with me. Isn't that reason enough?
Reinhardtzar: ...
Leona: To be honest, Cain's a lot for me to handle on my own. I could really use your help keeping him in line.
Leona: Besides, you can tell me more stories about Abel.
Reinhardtzar: Abel...
Abel: Reinhardtzar... Someday, someone's going to need you. And I'm not talking about your duty to your country.
Abel: Remember this: when that day comes, you won't be alone.
Reinhardtzar: I guess that day is finally here.
Cain: Did you say something?
Reinhardtzar: Yeah... I said I'm canceling my trip today. I'll come along on yours instead.
Cain: Ohhh! You will? Really?
Reinhardtzar: Yeah... If you need me, that's plenty reason enough.
Cain and Leona exchange a look, wide smiles stretching across their faces.
Reinhardtzar: (Now that I've repaid my debt to Abel, there's nothing telling me what I have to do.)
Reinhardtzar: (From now on, I'll live my own way.)
Cain: Well, let's get going then!
Leona: Oh yeah. The restaurant should be open by now.
Reinhardtzar: What are you two talking about?
Cain: Cake, of course! Abel promised you some, and you're gonna get it.
Reinhardtzar: ...
Cain: The place you liked back then closed, but there's one Leona recommends pretty close to here.
Leona: I just remembered I haven't had breakfast yet. As long as Cain's paying...
Cain: Wait, I'm treating you too?
Reinhardtzar: Haha! All right... I could go for a slice of cake.
The trio heads back into town shoulder to shoulder.
Sooner or later, they will leave Idelva behind, choosing a new path between the clouds.
A path which will reunite them with (Captain) and the crew.
