A Heavy Heart
After (Captain), Ryan, and the crew save a town, they're hailed as heroes, but Ryan struggles to get used to the treatment. When he receives a letter from his little sister, he decides to head back to his hometown for a break.
Ryan: Hyaaa!
Bandit: Argh!
Ryan swings his giant axe to help (Captain) and the crew confront some bandits trying to attack a town.
Ryan: Look out, (Captain)! Behind you!
Responding to Ryan's warning, (Captain) turns to strike down the bandit who was sneaking up from behind.
Bandit 1: Ugh! Damn you...
Bandit Leader: What the hell is going on? There's only two of them! How are we losing?
In the heat of battle, (Captain) looks at Ryan and, feeling the bonds of their friendship, thinks back to when they first met.In search of a place to stay, (Captain) and the crew had been heading for a village in the mountains. They were stopped by Ryan, who was guarding the village at the time.
Ryan: No one's getting in here. Orders from the chief.
Ryan feared the crew might be bandits in disguise, but he soon realized his mistake and joined forces with them to drive off the real bandits attacking the village.
They then rested up in the village, and Ryan asked to join the crew since his village no longer needed a guard.
Ryan: You're leading all of these people on a journey even though you're so young, (Captain). I'd also like to travel with you and learn from your bravery.
(Captain) agreed, and Ryan resolved to travel with the crew.
Ryan: Ha!
Ryan bounds like an animal and hurls his giant axe with one hand.
Bandit 2: Agh! Ugh...
The axe flies at a terrifying speed directly into a man aiming his gun at (Captain) from afar.
Bandit Leader: What the hell! How'd you notice me?
Ryan: Intuition.
Bandit Leader: Argh!
Vyrn: Whoa! Ryan's intuition is right on the money!
Ryan: Well, it wasn't just intuition. The smell of his gunpowder actually gave him away.
Vyrn: Huh? Gunpowder? But I didn't smell anything.
Ryan: You didn't? I guess it was faint... but it doesn't matter. Let's get back to town.
Ryan picks up his axe with a smile, and (Captain) gives him a nod. They and the rest of the crew head back to town.
When they get back, many of the townspeople offer them words of thanks.
Townsperson 1: Haha! I'm glad we let you guys handle this! I knew the mighty hero Ryan could do it!
Ryan: Hero? I'm nothing of the sort.
Townsperson 2: Oh, don't be so humble! You saved our town, so you're a hero to us!
Ryan: If you say so.
Ryan mutters and smiles uncomfortably.
Ryan: Hey, (Captain). Excuse me a minute. I'll be right back.
Ryan finds somewhere quiet and lets out a tired sigh.
Ryan: I just can't get used to this.
Vyrn: Huh? Get used to what?
Ryan: Hey, Vyrn. Oh, and (Captain). I didn't realize you were following me.
Lyria: We're sorry, but we were worried about you, so...
Ryan: Haha... No need to apologize. And as for what I said earlier...
Ryan: I meant that my skill in battle, my senses of sight and smell, and even my intuition are all getting better. I can feel that every time I fight.
Ryan: But it doesn't feel right.
Ryan: I left home to earn money so my sister could have a better life... but then I found myself traveling around with all of you.
Ryan: And now people call me a hero everywhere I go. It's just too much for me.
Lyria: Hehe. Isn't it a good thing to be called a hero? We're proud to have you in our crew!
Ryan: Haha. Proud, eh? I appreciate that and all, but to be honest it's a little tiring.
- Okay, you can borrow Vyrn!
- Let's rest here for a while!
Choose: Okay, you can borrow Vyrn!Ryan: What? Borrow Vyrn? You mean I can hug him and squeeze him?
Vyrn: Haha! You bet! Hug away!
Vyrn: Wait... What am I saying? I'm not some thing to be loaned out!
Ryan: Haha... You're right. I'm sorry.
Ryan: Thanks for trying to help me feel better, (Captain).
Choose: Let's rest here for a while!Ryan: No, I don't have time to rest. I have to earn money for my little sister.
Ryan: But thanks for trying to help me feel better, (Captain). I appreciate it.
Continue 1Ryan smiles sadly. (Captain) can't think of anything to say to break the awkward silence.
Ryan starts talking, seemingly looking for a way to break the tension.
Ryan: Um... Do you mind if I tell you about my sister?
Vyrn: Mind? We'd love to hear about her!
Ryan: Heheh. Her name is Conlon, and she looks really good in a straw hat. She's just sooo cute.
Ryan: And she's a farming genius! Her vegetables are the best in the skies!
Ryan: She also has really good intuition like me! Heck, better than me! She can even hear the calling of the insects and the wind!
Vyrn: Haha! She sounds pretty amazing!
Ryan: She is! Heheh. She really is! She's adorable and can do just about anything!
Beaming, Ryan pulls an unopened letter out of his bag and shows it proudly to the party.
Ryan: She often sends me letters like this, and I always write back.
Ryan: Her letters are always about the same things, but I can feel the love in them!
He opens the letter and starts to read. He suddenly freezes, his eyes wide.
Curious, (Captain) peeks at the letter.
Enough already. Take a break.
Ryan: Haha... There's no fooling her.
Ryan: I guess she noticed that I've been wanting a break.
Lyria: Haha... Conlon really does have good intuition, doesn't she?
Ryan: Yep, and I better take a break if she says so.
Vyrn: Really? Then I say we head to your hometown! I'd love to meet your sister!
Ryan: Good idea! Heheh. Let's do it!
Ryan: I can't even remember the last time I went back. I can't wait to see Conlon again! Heheh...
Ryan: But you have to promise me one thing, (Captain).
Ryan: You might fall for my sister, and that's fine... but lay a finger on her and you're in for a date with me and my axe.
(Captain) nods, intimidated by Ryan's indescribable intensity.
Ryan: It's a promise then. Now let's take care of any jobs we still need to finish up!
Ryan: Then we can head for my hometown! I'm coming to see you, sis! Just you wait!
Vyrn: Wow... He's like a totally different person when it comes to his sister.
(Captain) responds with a wry smile of agreement. Ryan does indeed look happier than he has in quite some time.
With everyone excited for their visit to Ryan's hometown, the crew moves toward their next destination.
Family Longings
(Captain) and the crew visit Ryan's hometown for a break, but they find a letter from Ryan's sister waiting for them instead of the girl herself. She has apparently run away from home, so they hurry into the nearby monster-filled forest in pursuit.
Having taken care of all their requests, (Captain) and the crew visit Ryan's hometown.
As they move through the peaceful village, people gather around to celebrate Ryan's return.
Villager 1: Whoa, look! It's Ryan! Glad to have you back!
Villager 2: Oh my, look at those muscles! And are these your friends? You're all welcome here!
Ryan: Thanks. Say, is Conlon home?
Child: Yep! She should be taking care of the vegetables in the fields right now!
Ryan: Is she now? Conlon, your brother's coming home!
Vyrn: Hey, wait! Everyone else just came out to welcome you! Slow down, Ryan!
Villager 2: Hehehe. It's all right. The only person he's ever had eyes for is his sister.
Villager 1: But isn't Conlon angry with him at the moment?
Villager 2: Maybe... but I'm sure it's no big deal. Have fun at Ryan's place, you guys.
Though confused by the villagers' comments, the crew follows Ryan.
Ryan: It took you guys long enough. This here is my house—the best home in all the skies, and the place where my little sister is waiting for me.
With a goofy grin on his face, Ryan opens the door.
Ryan: I'm hooome! Conlon, it's me, your big brother!
Vyrn: Um... Nobody's here.
Ryan: What? That doesn't make any sense. She wasn't outside either...
Lyria: Hmm... Oh! Look, Ryan! There's a letter.
Lyria directs Ryan's attention to a letter on the table.
He picks it up, and his eyes open wide as he reads it. He begins to tremble.
Vyrn: What's wrong? What does it say?
The others look at the letter. Adorable handwriting spells out a message to Ryan.
To my dear brother. I've decided to run away from home. I'm going to the forest.
Ryan: Run away? But why?
Vyrn: Hey! Ryan, calm down! She said she was going to the forest!
Ryan: The forest? But the only forest near here is loaded with monsters! Conlon! I'm coming for you!
Vyrn: Whoa! That was fast!
Lyria: Um... If she's running away, why would she tell him where she's going?
Vyrn: I have no clue, but we better go after him!
(Captain) agrees. They hurry after Ryan into the monster-infested forest.
Family Longings: Scene 2
While searching the forest, (Captain) and the crew find another letter from Ryan's sister, which implies that she's playing around with him. But his worry drives him up into the mountains in search of her, rushing faster than the rest of the crew can even blink.
(Captain) and the crew search every corner of the forest, but there are no signs of life aside from the monsters they defeat along the way.
Ryan: Argh! Conlon! Where are you? It's dangerous here! Come home, Conlon!
Ryan: Why'd you have to run away? Are you going through a rebellious phase? Ugh!
Vyrn: Um... Ryan? Could you calm down for a minute?
Lyria: Don't you think it's a little strange that she'd run away from home but tell you where she's going?
Ryan: Hey! There's someone in the forest!
Ryan appears to have sensed something. He goes tearing off into the forest at incredible speed.
Ryan appears to have sensed something. He goes tearing off into the forest faster than the rest of the crew can even blink.
Vyrn: Whoa! Wait! Ryan, come back!
(Captain) and the others hurry after him.
They soon find Ryan standing completely still, a letter in his hand.
Lyria: Um... So what does it say this time?
The crew leans in timidly to see the letter.
To my dear brother. I see you still have the instincts of a wild animal. I'm going to the mountains. Don't look for me.
Vyrn: Uh... Is it just me, or is your sister messing with you, Ryan?
Lyria: Haha... I think so too. Why else would she write where she's going and then tell you not to look for her?
But Ryan is distraught. He holds his head in his hands, trembling uncontrollably.
Ryan: The mountains? No, not those mountains! Anything but that!
Ryan: She'll get hurt up there! Conlon!
(Captain) and Ryan have narrowly escaped death together a number of times.
(Captain) therefore has a pretty good idea of the extent of Ryan's physical abilities.
But (Captain) has never seen Ryan dash with such blistering speed before.
Vyrn: Hey, what are you waiting for? This is no time to be sitting around drooling! After him!
(Captain) quickly nods and chases after Ryan, who's already sped out of sight.
Family Longings: Scene 3
The crew follows Ryan all the way to a mountain peak, but his sister is nowhere in sight. They instead find another letter from her, which convinces Ryan to come back again one day.
Though (Captain) follows Ryan all over the mountains, Conlon is nowhere in sight.
But at one mountain peak, the crew does find a charming basket containing delicious-looking vegetables and a letter.
Ryan takes the letter from the basket and calmly begins to read it.
Vyrn: Gulp... Is everything gonna be okay this time? Wh-what does it say?
As Ryan reads the letter, the party timidly leans in to read it too.
To my silly brother: All this time and you haven't come home once. Did you think you could just show up and expect to see me?
Ridiculous. I wanted to see you so badly, but all I got was money and letters...
Think about that. You won't see me this time, but you will next time. So you'd better come back again soon.
Ryan: You know, she's exactly right.
Ryan: It really has been a long time since I last saw her... and since I came back home.
Ryan: How many years has it been? When was the last time we played together like this?
Vyrn: What? So you knew she was playing with you?
Ryan: Heh... She's my dear little sister. I usually know what she's up to. I guess I'll have to come back another time.
Lyria: Um... Are you sure you don't want to see her? We came all the way here after all.
Ryan: I can't go against her wishes. Besides, if I force her to see me now, she might hate me for it, and I couldn't bear that.
Ryan's shoulders slump in dejection.
While searching for something to say, (Captain) notices another letter in the basket.
Ryan: Huh?
Ryan picks it up and reads it with the crew.
Look under the vegetables. And make sure to eat them. I'm very proud of them. Also, enjoy the view.
Puzzled, Ryan removes the vegetables and checks the bottom of the basket, where he finds an adorable plush rabbit.
Ryan: This is one of Conlon's handmade stuffed animals!
Lyria: Wow! It's so cute!
Ryan: Oooh! Oh! This is amazing! I've never seen a stuffed rabbit so cute! And it's so soft and furry!
Ryan: Conlon! I promise I'll come back! Your brother will be back again!
Ryan feels his sister's love deeply—and he and the party stuff their faces with the tasty vegetables.
They enjoy the pleasant taste and tang of the vegetables as they take in the view of the village from the mountain summit.
Silently, Ryan vows to come back to his hometown again someday soon.
A Brother's Love
After rescuing a young boy and his sister from a pack of monsters, Ryan begins to think of his own sister and becomes jealous of Lucius, whose sister is always around. Ryan then prods Lucius into acting more affectionately toward his sister, causing Lucius to blush.
As part of a mission for Siero, the crew goes to fight off monsters in the forest.
But as they make their way through the trees, they hear a sound off in the distance. The sound of children screaming.
Lucius: Tch...
Ryan: We'd better hurry!
Monster: Grrr...
Brother: S-stay back!
Sister: Aah!
(Captain) and company run toward the commotion. There they find a boy protecting his sister with a stick as monsters steadily creep closer.
Lucius: Be gone, fiends!
Ryan: Hyaaa!
Ryan and Lucius charge in and take on the monsters before anyone else has a chance.
Monster: Graa...
With the flash of a sword and the swing of an axe, the duo fight them off and save the children.
Brother: Thank you!
Lucius: Geez, kid. You thought you could beat those monsters with a twig?
Brother: I'm sorry.
Lucius: Humph... You were pretty brave, though. Impressive.
Ryan: He's right. You did good, kid.
Ryan bends down and ruffles the hair of the kids.
As he does, he looks the boy in the eye and lets out a chuckle.
Ryan: You keep that sister of yours safe, you got that?
Brother: Okay!
The boy gives his sister a big hug and pats her on the head.
(Captain) and the crew watch the adorable scene and smile.
Lyria: It must be nice to have siblings. Now I wish I had some.
Vyrn: Heh heh. Well, these two each have sisters of their own! I'll bet you both know how that boy feels.
Lucius: Yeah, I guess. Anyway let's see these two off to the village.
The crew takes the siblings to the village and then leaves for the ship.
The brother and sister wave goodbye as they watch the crew leave. Ryan smiles back at them, but then he starts to get misty-eyed.
Ryan: Oh...
Lucius: What's the matter?
Ryan: I really wish I could see Kunlun now.
Ryan carefully takes out the handwritten letter from his sister, Kunlun. As he reads it, tears begin to well up in his eyes.
Ryan: Sigh. You all went with me to visit my hometown some time ago.
Ryan: But up until then I had just been sending home money and letters. I hadn't gone to see Kunlun at all, so she was pretty mad at me.
Ryan: That's why she didn't want to speak to me then.
Lucius: Humph... I guess that means you haven't seen your sister in a while, have you?
Ryan: Yeah. But she told me in this letter that she would actually see me next time.
Ryan: Heh, I want to give Kunlun a big hug too. Just like that boy did.
Lucius: What? You want to... hug her?
Lucius's eyes grow wide as he stares at Ryan.
Ryan: Come now, you're not that surprised, are you? Maybe you don't understand because your sister is always around.
Ryan: Oh... When two siblings can't be together, they miss each other so much.
Ryan: Kunlun!
Hearing Ryan yell, the crew members in front immediately turn around.
Vyrn: Why are you shouting? Don't scare us like that!
Lyria: Maybe he was just worried about his sister?
Ryan: Aww... Geez, I miss Kunlun. I wish I could see her. Lucius sure is lucky.
Ryan stares directly at Lucius with a look of envy.
Lucius: Hey, don't look at me like that.
Ryan: So, Lucius. Do you show your sister that you care about her?
Lucius: Yeah, I guess.
Ryan: What? Yeah, I guess? That won't do. That won't do at all!
Vyrn: Come on, you don't have to get so worked up about it! I mean, Lucius is—
Ryan: You stay out of this, Vyrn. This is just between us guys with sisters.
Vyrn: But—
Ryan: If you can't say it confidently, your sister can't possibly know that you care.
Ryan: You have to take the time to express your love!
The more Ryan tries to get his point across, the more fired up he gets.
Even Lucius, who wasn't really listening at first, realizes Ryan's point and starts to second-guess himself.
Lucius: (I care about Teena in my own way. Isn't that good enough?)
Lyria: Umm, Lucius. Are you okay?
Lucius: Hey Lyria. If you... had a brother, would you want him to be like Ryan?
Lyria: W-well... I'm not sure...
Ryan: Humph. Lyria has never had a brother before, so she has no idea.
Ryan: So then, let's give it a shot!
Lyria: Huh? What do you mean?
Ryan: Hahaha. We're going to practice showing our brotherly affection, of course!
Ryan: How about it? You be the sister, and Lucius will be your brother!
Lucius: What!
Ryan: Go for it, Lucius!
Ryan gives Lucius an encouraging pat on the back, but Lucius doesn't share his enthusiasm.
Lucius: Ugh. This is stupid. You don't have to do this, Lyria.
Lyria: If it helps you and Teena, then I guess it's okay.
Lucius: What? What are you trying to say?
Ryan: That's the spirit, Lyria!
Ryan: Hah hah hah hah! All right, Lucius! Lyria will be Teena. Be sure to give her lots of love!
Lyria: Okay, I'm ready! We can start whenever you want!
Lucius: Lyria, how can you be okay with this?
Lucius: Stop looking at me like that! Come on, Captain! You have to put a stop to this!
- Why don't you just try it?
- Be nice, Brother!
Choose: Why don't you just try it?Lucius: Tch. I can't believe everyone's getting onboard with this!
Choose: Be nice, Brother!Lucius: What! Not you too, (Captain)!
Continue 1Lucius: (Geez. What a predicament...)
In an effort to try and escape, Lucius quietly starts scooting backward.
Ryan: Hey! Are you just going to ignore your sister? You think that'll make her happy?
Lucius: Ack! I... I...
Ryan's words fill Lucius with all kinds of emotions that swirl around inside him.
Lucius: (Ugh... What are these... feelings? What do I do?)
Seeing the worried look on Lucius's face, Vyrn gives him a pat on the shoulder.
Vyrn: Ryan is taking this thing pretty far. Looks like we don't have much of a choice here.
Vyrn: Let's just get this done and head home.
Lucius: Lizard...
Vyrn: Hehe...
Wait, I ain't no lizard!
Lucius: (Hah. I guess he's right. If we're going to put this behind us, we'd better just get it over with now.)
Lucius: (Besides I have to prove it to them. I have to prove my love for Teena.)
Ryan studies Lucius and pauses for a moment. He wants to see if Lucius has turned over a new leaf.
As he does, everyone else follows suit and the air quickly fills with silence.
Lucius: (Ugh! This is so nerve-wracking! But... it's okay. It'll all be over soon.)
Lucius: Let's do this!
Lyria: Okay!
Lucius: Humph!
Lucius swings his arm around and awkwardly places it on Lyria's head, patting her clumsily.
He then puts on a big brotherly smile for Ryan.
Lyria: Wow, Lucius. Hehe.
Lucius: Tch. Happy now?
Ryan: Great work! See? You can do it if you try!
Lyria: Hehe. That was very sweet of you, Lucius!
Vyrn: Nice job! Even I was surprised. You really looked the part!
The words of praise from the crew cause Lucius to blush. Feeling his face turn red, he starts to dart away but instead turns to face the crew.
Lucius: Humph. Are you just going to stand there all day? We don't have time for this. Let's go already!
Vyrn: Heh heh. You don't have to act so embarrassed! Hey, wait!
The crew follows Lucius back to the ship, smiling all the while as they think of the great moment they had just shared together.
