To Dazzling Shores
(Captain) and the gang go to the cafeteria so they can discuss their upcoming assignment in Auguste with Raziel. They find her in a happy mood, fully engrossed in a travel magazine. Insisting that she is not joining them for leisurely purposes, she tries to convince the others that her understanding of Auguste is more than adequate. However, on the day of their arrival, Raziel comes face-to-face with creatures that are beyond her comprehension.
Raziel sits alone in the cafe aboard the Grandcypher, sipping her post-meal tea.
By now feeling fully at home among the crew, the archangel of enigmas cheerfully flips through a travel magazine.
Raziel: "The number one tourist destination in the skies! A tropical resort like no other!"
Raziel: La la la... Auguste! Sunny, enigmatic Auguste!
Vyrn: You basically use that "enigma" word for anything you like, huh?
Raziel: Eek!
Raziel: (Captain)! Please don't sneak up on me like that!
Vyrn: Sneak up on you? We just walked up to you normally!
Lyria: Excited for Auguste? We're so lucky that we get to go there on an assignment! And at this time of year too!
Raziel: Hmm? Auguste? Oh, yes, I do recall there being an island with that name, of course.
Raziel: And we're headed there for an assignment, are we? Don't you think you should be approaching this a little more professionally?
Lyria: Oh. But...
The gang looks at Raziel, then down at the open magazine on the table.
"Top 500 Views in Phantagrande "
"Eat Your Way through Auguste"
"The Complete Shopper's Guide to Mizarea" Vyrn: Look who's talkin'...
Raziel: D-don't look at me like that!
Vyrn: If you're so worried about the job, shouldn't you be readin' something other than a travel guide?
Raziel: Oh, Vyrn. Such naivete. Such an empty, empty head.
Vyrn: Hey! Who're you calling naive?
Lyria: Now, now...
Raziel: This magazine is the only thing I need to prepare for the mission.
Raziel: You see, everything else you could want to know about Auguste I have already recorded in my spellbooks!
Vyrn: E-everything?
Raziel: Yes, everything!
I can even recite it from memory.
Raziel: Auguste. Formally known as the Auguste Isles Special Economic Cooperative Territory. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in all the skies, thanks to its vast ocean.
Raziel: The abundant tax revenue provided by its tourism industry is funneled into its military, and as such it possesses a powerful self-defense force that rivals the armies of much larger nations.
Raziel: The capital of Auguste is Mizarea, also known as Aqua City. Boats are the primary mode of transport within the city, and—
Vyrn: Whoa! She's like a talking encyclopedia!
Vyrn: Wait, this must mean you've already been to Auguste.
Raziel: Of course. I am an archangel!
Vyrn: What's that gotta do with it?
Raziel: I was tasked by Lord Lucifer to record the enigmas of the Sky Realm.
Raziel: Naturally, I had to visit an island as unique as Auguste!
Lyria: So what are you going to do this time around, Raziel?
Raziel: As I've been trying to tell you, I wish to learn about what's happening in Auguste now. I know enough about its geography and history!
Vyrn: And that's why you're lookin' up all these vacation spots? I guess it makes sense when you put it that way...
Lyria: It does seem like there's a new popular shop or trend every time we visit.
Raziel: Yes! Yes, exactly! This is business, not pleasure!
Vyrn: Well, that kinda sounds like bogus...
Vyrn: But great! We thought you might not be aware of, y' know, those things, but looks like there's no need to worry!
Lyria: Yes! There shouldn't be a problem at all if you already know about the things!
Raziel: (Things? Worried? Problem? Are they talking about the spa place that opened not too long ago?)
Raziel: (No matter. I have done my research and am fully prepared to tackle the many perils of the sauna!)
Raziel: Absolutely! My knowledge of Auguste is deeper than the ocean itself!
And so Raziel continues her preparations, bubbling with excitement.
Raziel: I'm going to need a parasol, of course! And I've already packed my swimsuit and sunglasses...
Raziel: Picnic basket—check!
Sunscreen—check!
I'm all set!
Raziel: Let's get this mission over with so we can move on to vacationing!
And so the day arrives. Fully equipped for a day of beachgoing, Raziel dashes down the ramp...
Raziel: Hello, Venera Beach! It is I, Raziel, archangel of sun and surf!
And she comes face-to-face with the things.
Raziel: What?
Raziel: Whaaat?
Oh Auguste, My Enigma
After touching down in Auguste, the crew encounters a wide variety of outlandish creatures. Having come expecting a peaceful and idyllic seaside resort, Raziel balks and grudgingly admits that her knowledge of the area may not have been up to scratch. In an attempt to cheer her up, (Captain) and the others take a job from the Fishermen's Guild to investigate the local ecosystem and set out to sea. Raziel relishes the challenge and begins to feel better, at which point the crew's boat is promptly rammed by a ginormous fish.
Raziel has come to Auguste on a mission with the crew, expecting to enjoy the seaside paradise.
But her mouth lies agape at the unexpected sight before her.
Raziel: ...
Giant Flying Fish: ...
Raziel: ...?
...?
Raziel: What is that?
Lyria: That's an Albacore.
Violent Slimy Fish: ...
Raziel: ...
...?
Raziel: And what is that?
Lyria: That's an electric eal.
Mighty Shellfishes: ...!
Raziel: And what in the skies are those?
Lyria: Those are colossal hermits! At least, that's what the big ones are called. I didn't know they came in smaller sizes!
Raziel: ...
Raziel: This isn't how it's supposed to be!
Lyria: Wh-what's wrong? All we've done is walk around some of the smaller islands!
Raziel: "What's wrong?" You tell me!
Raziel: Why? Is the beach? Completely infested? With these ludicrous monsters?
Raziel: And why am I the only one here who seems to be bothered by them?
Lyria, Vyrn and (Captain) exchange puzzled looks.
Vyrn: Well, because...
- This is Auguste...
Choose: This is Auguste...Lyria: And they do all taste delicious...
Raziel: They do? No, wait. Are you suggesting all this is business as usual?
Vyrn: Well, I mean, it's not like it happens every day...
- But this is Auguste...
Choose: But this is Auguste...Lyria: It can get a little out of hand sometimes, but it's pretty common in the summer...
Raziel: (My beautiful beaches... My glorious summer... It's all falling to pieces...)
Raziel: (Am I being tested, Lord Lucifer? Must I endure this ordeal to prove my worth?)
Lyria: Oh no... I think Raziel is upset.
Vyrn: Are you sure you did enough research about Auguste before you came here?
Raziel: Hng!
Raziel: (Now that I think about it... My last visit here might have been too brief to get a proper lay of the land...)
Raziel: (But it's not my fault! This isn't the sort of place you visit by yourself!)
Raziel: I admit that I might have come here with certain... preconceptions.
Raziel: My knowledge is outdated. It seems you are the experts on the modern Auguste.
Vyrn: Man, hangin' out with you is a real roller-coaster ride lately.
Lyria: Don't worry! We can get you back up to speed as we complete our assignment!
Lyria: It'll be easy, since this time our job is to—
Guild Leader: Investigate the marine ecosystem and report back to us!
The crew have come to the Auguste Fishermen's Guild to be briefed by their client on the upcoming job.
Lyria: So your fishing hauls have been getting worse and worse, and you don't know why?
Guild Leader: Aye. We reckon there be some form of anomalous activity in the ocean, wreaking havoc with the environment. But we've no idea what.
Raziel: You mentioned that your guild has already conducted an investigation into the matter?
Guild Leader: Aye, but there be only so much a fishing crew can do. That be why we called for your crew instead. Ye be no strangers to Auguste's many "incidents".
Guild Leader: We beg of ye, Captain! Seek out the source of our watery woes!
As the client bows his head, (Captain) nods back in assent.
Raziel: So, we must conduct some ecological research. Hehe... This is right in my wheelhouse! I shall lead this investigation!
Lyria: Are you sure?
Vyrn: Yeah, take it easy. You were losin' your head just a second ago.
Raziel: Onward, in search of enigmas!
Vyrn: Hey, we're talkin' to you...
Suddenly...
A giant fish leaps out of the water. With tremendous force, it rams the bow of the boat where Raziel stands pointing to the horizon, one leg raised upon the bowsprit.
Raziel: Gaaah!
The ship immediately capsizes.
Will Raziel emerge from the water unscathed? Will she escape this ridiculous place with her sanity intact? Tune in next time to find out!
Oh Auguste, My Enigma: Scene 2
Despite immediately capsizing after leaving port, the crew manage to get their voyage back on track. Raziel is continuously shocked by each new creature they find, aghast at how they seem to defy the laws of nature and common sense. However, (Captain) and the others are unperturbed, claiming that this is just another normal day in Auguste. After encountering a swarm of electric eals, Raziel concludes that the others are under some sort of mind control, and she continues her search alone.
Raziel opens her eyes and is greeted by the sight of a giant flying clam.
Raziel: Wha—
Tasked with investigating the local marine ecosystem, Raziel and the crew had set out to sea.
However, their boat is immediately sunk by a giant sunfish attack. Raziel is rendered unconscious before waking to yet another bizarre sight.
Raziel: I-I've found it! That's the anomaly disrupting the ecosystem! Look everybody, it's above us!
Vyrn: Whoa! Are you okay? Did you hit your head?
Vyrn: Don't worry. Our boat sunk, but some nearby fishermen pulled us out of the water and—
Raziel: Why is there a giant clam flying through the air? We have to get to the bottom of this!
Vyrn: Are you even listening?
Lyria: I guess it might seem a little strange, but it's a pretty common sight around here. It's called a deepflight oyster.
Raziel: What? No, but... it's flying. It's a flying oyster.
Lyria: Yes, but we've seen them before.
Raziel: ...
What?
Dragging Raziel along, (Captain) and the crew continue their voyage around Auguste.
They next come across a giant flaming fish.
Raziel: How could it possibly stay on fire underwater? There's no way this isn't the anomaly!
Lyria: Oh wow, a hellfire bonito! I haven't seen one in a while!
Raziel: P-please don't tell me you're used to them?
Then, they find a giant shape-shifting watermelon.
Raziel: What is that? An ancient weapon?
Vyrn: Oh, we're already coming up on Watermelon Island, huh. Looks like they're transformin' again.
Raziel: Again?
Lyria: If I remember right, it can only be stopped if we eat every part of it. Shall we try some, since we're here?
Raziel: "Since we're here?" That's not dessert, it has limbs!
Vyrn: Those things don't even taste that good anyway.
With each new encounter, Raziel is convinced that they have found the anomaly.
But she is overruled at every turn by the rest of the gang, who insist that they are all a part of Auguste's natural environment.
Lyria: I suppose it is strange that we're seeing so many at once today.
Vyrn: Yeah. Maybe they're really active this time of year?
Raziel: Some time of year...
Lyria: Oh, look! We're nearly at the next island!
The ship arrives at an island that none of the crew have been to before.
Electric Eals: ...!
Raziel: Electric eals! A lot of them! Whyyy?
Vyrn: Could be 'cause we're near Cyrath Island.
- Let's get 'em.
- Let's take them home and broil 'em.
- Can I get a spellbook?
Choose: Let's get 'em.Raziel: A-all right. Here I go!
Choose: Let's take them home and broil 'em.Raziel: What, and eat all of them? This many? Well, I suppose we have to take them down either way!
Choose: Can I get a spellbook?Raziel: What, now? There's nothing about eals in there!
Raziel: Which, I suppose, reflects badly on my research skills... A-anyway!
Continue 1Raziel: Page 315! Book of Weapons, On Firearms!
Raziel: Graaagh!
Electric Eals: ...!
Raziel: Go away please, eals! Get out of here!
Lyria: Amazing, Raziel! Your threatening aura is scaring them away!
Raziel: Huff... Huff...
Raziel: (There's no denying it now... There's something very wrong with Auguste.)
Raziel: (Captain)!
Raziel: Please, listen to me very carefully.
With a serious expression on her face, Raziel intently looks (Captain) in the eye.
Raziel: This place is completely and utterly insane.
- Well, yeah.
- I know.
Choose: Well, yeah.Choose: I know.Raziel: P-please take this seriously!
Vyrn: It's a little weird, sure, but this is just how things are here.
Raziel: Th-that can't be right...
Raziel: (Auguste is famously advertised as a popular resort area. It's not supposed to have these monsters everywhere!)
Raziel: (Something is wrong... We could all be in terrible danger!)
Raziel: (Maybe... Maybe Auguste is home to a primal beast with the ability to cast special illusions...)
Raziel: (Maybe it's tampering with people's minds, affecting how they think...)
Raziel: (But if that were true... it would mean that I'm the only sane one left!)
Without a word, Raziel retreats from the fight, leaving behind the rest of the crew as they disperse the remaining electric eals.
Raziel: Hold on, everyone. As ludicrous as the seafood here is, they are undoubtedly an enigma.
Raziel: And enigmas are my domain! I'll save you all, just you wait!
Determined to succeed, Raziel sets off to explore the surrounding area alone.
Oh Auguste, My Enigma: Scene 3
While spending some time alone in a quiet inlet, Raziel realizes too late that she has been surrounded on all sides by a horde of urkins. She tries to fly upward to safety but is impeded by a swarm of deepflight oysters circling overhead. Out of options, Raziel tries to attack the urkins head-on but (Captain) and the crew arrive and tell her to stop. She hesitates and is sadly buried under the mountain of urkins.
Unable to handle the madness of Auguste, Raziel falls into a state of paranoia.
She gets it into her head that (Captain) and the others have lost their minds, and goes out alone in search of a solution.
Raziel: So beautiful...
On her search, she comes across a tranquil yet dazzling inlet.
Raziel: Ah!
I must have lost myself in the view. How careless of me...
Raziel: Still, it's a wonderfully charming place. I must make a record of it!
Raziel: Not to mention, it's in seemingly peaceful places like these where some of the darkest secrets lie! Now, let's see...
Raziel: Hmm, the ocean's saline level is normal.
Raziel: Now for the organisms.
Raziel: Oh, what a pretty seashell! And there, a cute little fish!
Raziel: Maybe I'll just dip my toe in the water...
Raziel: Ooh, that feels great!
Raziel: Sigh... Maybe I should have invited Lord Sandalphon after all.
Raziel: We could have talked for hours about what kind of yukata Lord Lucifer would look good in.
???: ...
Raziel: ...?
An unfamiliar sound interrupts Raziel's thoughts.
She looks around to find that she has been swarmed by a large group of urkins.
Raziel: Eeeek!
Raziel: S-so many urkins! They must be the anomaly! I'll need to create some distance if I'm going to fight them...
But Raziel soon realizes that the urkins have boxed her in completely. She is left with no way to get through them.
Raziel: It's as if they're working together to hunt me down!
Raziel: Oh, of course! I can just fly over them!
Raziel looks to the sky. But to her horror, she sees a flock of deepflight oysters, circling the space above her.
Raziel: Eep! I'm trapped!
Urkins: ...
Raziel: Grr... Enough!
Raziel: Page 315! Book of Weapons, On Firearms!
Raziel: Feel the power of my rotating multibarrel autocannon, the Angeling Gun!
Vyrn: Stooop!
Raziel: Eeeek!
Vyrn: Don't shoot! Quick, get over here!
Raziel: What do you mean? Can't you see I'm surrounded?
Vyrn: Whatever you do, just don't make 'em angry!
But it's too late. The urkins close in on Raziel, gradually piling onto her.
Raziel: Mmph? Mmmph!
Finally, the archangel disappears from view.
Vyrn: Wait, you're an archangel. Why didn't you just fly up?
Raziel: Mmph... Because... the oysters...
Raziel: Ow, not the spikes! Not the spikes! Aaaagh!
Raziel's cries of pain echo out across Auguste.
Raziel: Not the spiiikes!
Oh Auguste, My Enigma: Scene 4
It is revealed that the inlet is actually an urkin breeding ground. After rescuing Raziel from the urkin pile, the crew surmise that they are near the source of the anomaly. Eventually, they discover that a massive population of small crabs are eating the urkin eggs. The crew work throughout the night to capture the crabs and complete their mission. The experience causes Raziel to become fascinated with the enigmas of marine life. She promptly forgets about her vacation and begins planning an adventure, on which she asks (Captain) and the others to join her.
Lyria: Oh no! Raziel is drowning in urkins!
- Let's pull her out!
- Hang on, we're coming!
- Can I get a spellbook?
Choose: Let's pull her out!Raziel: Y-yes, please...
Choose: Hang on, we're coming!Raziel: Please be quick...
Choose: Can I get a spellbook?Raziel: I don't think now is an appropriate time!
Continue 1Lyria: Everybody, pull! Now!
Raziel: Ow ow ow! I'm caught on a spike! I'm caught! I said I'm caught!
Vyrn: Hey, she's out! Glad to see you're safe, Raziel!
Raziel: Huff... Huff...
Not that I'm ungrateful, but why did you tell me not to shoot?
Vyrn: Oh yeah! Well, we figured there was somethin' you needed to know about this place, so we rushed ahead to tell ya.
Lyria: This inlet is actually an urkin breeding ground!
Raziel: It is? Who told you that?
Vyrn: The nice fisherman who helped us when our boat was capsized by the sunfish.
Lyria: You were unconscious at the time, so... Sorry we didn't tell you sooner!
Raziel: I-I see. So if I had gone ahead and slain all these urkins...
Lyria: It would have had a devastating effect on the local environment! Thank goodness we got to you in time!
Raziel: I... I apologize. I shouldn't have acted alone.
Raziel: And I see now that if we get far enough away, the urkin won't attack us.
The urkins gathered in the distance jostle against each other, staying put in their positions.
Lyria: Hmm... Everything else here appears normal...
Raziel: Is something wrong, Lyria? You look puzzled.
Lyria: We were just discussing how this place could be the source of the anomaly.
Vyrn: Yeah, (Captain) had the idea to check this place out once we heard what the fishermen had to say.
Raziel: Hmm. So the places where we've encountered sea creatures so far form a ring pattern around this island?
Raziel: That is curious.
Now that they are reunited with Raziel, the crew begin to scour the inlet in earnest.
Raziel: Hm, nothing odd about the sand's components. The ebb and flow of the tide are also within regular parameters...
Lyria: (Captain)!
Look, a cute little fish!
Lyria: And over there! A crab!
Raziel: Heh. Ah, to be young and distractable. Don't worry, I can handle the investigation by my—
Lyria: Oh my! There's more of them!
Raziel: Goodness, a lot more of them!
Lyria points towards an impressively large gathering of crabs, all of which appear to be eating something.
Raziel: Those look like... eggs.
Raziel: Those crabs are eating the urkin eggs!
Raziel: Now that we have compiled everybody's findings, allow me to present my conclusions.
Lyria: Excuse me, Professor Raziel?
Raziel: Yes, Ms. Lyria? Please keep your questions brief.
Lyria: Why are the crabs eating the urkin eggs?
Raziel: Ah, well... Eggs are, in general, very nutritious, and um... they probably taste good too! Like their parents!
Lyria: I see!
Vyrn: (What kind of an answer was that?)
Raziel: Now then, as I was saying!
Raziel: Survival is a cruel game, especially in the ocean. Urkin are known to lay vast quantities of eggs, but most of those get eaten by predators.
Raziel: However, as is usually the case, that is simply a part of the natural food chain of this local environment.
Lyria: The food chain is like the circle of life, isn't it? Eating other animals, and getting eaten?
Raziel: Sure. And that delicate balance was disturbed here by a sudden increase in the crab population.
Raziel: In turn, this caused many of the other sea creatures to exhibit anomalous behavior!
Don't ask me about the watermelons.
Vyrn: Huh. Well, I guess it makes sense.
Raziel: Haha! The archangel of enigmas triumphs once again—is what I would normally say.
Raziel: This time, though, it's you guys who deserve the credit. I was in too much of a panic to properly observe my surroundings.
Raziel: You helped me see that as ridiculous as these creatures are, they all have their own habitats and breeding grounds... Their own ecosystem.
Raziel: So thank you, (Captain). Thank you, everyone!
Vyrn: I know you're tryin' to wrap things up with a heartwarming speech, but you're forgettin' we still have to round up those crabs.
Lyria: Oh, right. If we leave them here they'll just keep eating the eggs.
Vyrn: And look how many there are! This is gonna take awhile.
Raziel: These crabs must have come from somewhere. We have to return them to their natural habitat as soon as possible!
Lyria: Oh, that one's running away! Quick, catch it!
Raziel: Where? It's too small, I can't see it!
Vyrn: How the heck are we gonna catch 'em all?
The crab wrangling proves incredibly difficult for the crew.
Raziel: Ugh... 1,000 crabs... 1,001 crabs... 1,002... Phoenixes...
Lyria: Hang in there, Raziel!
Vyrn: Yeah! That's way too many Phoenixes!
The crew keeps working long into the night.
Guild Leader: Ye did it! Aye, this particular breed of crab be usually found further south from here. Must've been swept here by a freak current.
Guild Leader: We'd never have noticed that they were eatin' all the urkin eggs. Thank ye from the bottom of me heart!
Lyria: You're welcome! We hope your fishing hauls return to their usual amounts soon. Right, Raziel?
Raziel: ...
Lyria: Raziel?
Lyria: Um, Raziel? Is everything all right?
Raziel: Oh!
Raziel: I'm so sorry! I was just lost in thought...
Vyrn: Haha, itchin' to start enjoying Auguste for real, huh?
Lyria: Hehe, why not? We've finished the job, so let's have as much fun as we can before we have to go!
Raziel: Actually, I was thinking...
Raziel: I was thinking of learning more about Auguste's creatures!
Vyrn: Wha?
Raziel: It's true that at first glance, they seem like ludicrous, incomprehensible life-forms.
Raziel: But now I realize that each one is its own fascinating, natural mystery, thriving in its niche within the ocean!
Raziel's eyes seem to shimmer and shine to an impossible degree.
Raziel: Oh, (Captain)! I'm so excited to get started with my research!
Raziel: There's so much I don't know about these Augustian life-forms! I've found my new enigmas!
Vyrn: I think I can see actual sparkles in her eyes.
Raziel: I will discover all the secrets of the ocean and add them to my spellbook!
Raziel: Now, onward, to the high seas! To adventure!
Give me an E! Give me an N! Give me an I! Give me—
Vyrn: Uh, should we do something, (Captain)?
- I'm happy she's taken an interest.
- There's the Raziel we know.
- Can I get a spellbook?
Choose: I'm happy she's taken an interest.Choose: There's the Raziel we know.Vyrn: Huh? Umm... Well, if you say so.
Choose: Can I get a spellbook?Raziel: Oooh! So you're interested in the enigmas of Auguste too, (Captain)!
Raziel: Then please, assist me with my research! You can have all the spellbooks you want once I've compiled everything, okay?
Vyrn: Not anytime soon, then.
Continue 2Tantalized by the prospect of new enigmas, Raziel sets forth on a journey of exploration and study.
Putting her vacation aside in the meantime, she decides to dedicate herself to a fresh adventure.
And why not? After all, her summer has only just begun.
Raziel: So just how were those clams flying, anyway?
Vyrn: Argh, don't ask me!
