Happy Birthday Cutscenes

1

Happy birthday!
I'm glad to be able to celebrate your birthday with you. Let's enjoy ourselves!

2

Today's your birthday. Right, (Captain)?
Hm? Why do you look surprised?
Ha-ha! Of course I'd remember a birthday for someone as dear to me as you!
As luck would have it, I'm free all day today. So... if you'd like, (Captain), shall we go out somewhere together?
Oh! If you're nodding, then that means yes, right? Thank you, (Captain).
Well then, shall we go now?
Hm... Well, anywhere is fine by me! Do you have a place in mind, (Captain)?
No, wait! I'm not being lazy about your birthday plans! If you leave everything up to me, I know I can take you around to places you'll enjoy!
Ha-ha! Today is all about you, (Captain)!
Your wish is my command! Now let's make this birthday a fun one!

3

Happy birthday! I put together a special training session for you just for today.
Huh? You want to do something different? Okay, shall we take a stroll through the forest?
Ahhh... The weather today is splendid. I can hear the birds chirping from afar.
Oh yeah? You've seen birds like that in the forest near your home, (Captain)?
Hm? There's something on the ground...
Look! It's a snake skin! Ha-ha! What a lucky find!
Did you know? Snake skins are said to bring prosperity. There are even people who clean them up and make them into protection charms.
I know! Let's make a matching pair of charms for ourselves!
Heh-heh! I have a design in mind for you, so be looking forward to it!

4

Happy birthday! (Captain), what are your plans for the day?
Oh? You're free?
Then how about... we go out for a little walk?
I know last year was a little haphazard, so this year I've done a little planning in advance.
I was thinking we could walk along Feendrache and have some local food or go to my favorite weapon shop...
Or we could train together. What do you think?
Hm? Do none of those options interest you?
I see... You are a hard one to please, (Captain).
Then what if we... went on a rowboat trip over on that lake? Would you like that?
Oh! I saw your eyes light up! That's what we'll do then!
I don't know if I'm any good at rowing, but I'll try anyways. (Captain), you just sit back, relax, and take in the scenery.

5

Happy birthday, (Captain)!
This is our fifth year celebrating together, isn't it?
When we first met, I thought you were someone who had a strong sense of responsibility—someone I could trust.
But after journeying with you for so long, now I know that you are so much more than that.
You've made me think that I want to be someone who can put his all into defending someone else.
Haha, you look happy to hear that. I like the smile on your face!
Actually, I have a present for you today.
Here are some props to help you with your core training! It all comes down to the basics for everything, right?
I'll show you how to use them. Would you be up for some training now?

1

Happy New Year!
The new year is no excuse to skip out on training! Now let's get to work!

2

Usually I go see my parents back home for the new year, but hm... Would you like to come, (Captain)?
Great! Then why don't you come along with me for a visit?
I'd love to introduce you to my parents.
So yeah? You'll come? What's wrong? Just leave everything to me and I'll show you around while we're there.
Ah! And we should check out the local festival they have every year. They have food stalls and merchants and more!
Oh, I should probably warn you though. Be careful not to cut loose too much.
The older folks there seem to look down on that!

3

Looks like I'll be able to spend the new year with my parents again this year.
Huh? You want to come with me this year too? Sure, you're more than welcome!
Shall we check out the local festival again? Oh, and if there's any food you want to try, you be sure to tell me. I'll procure it for you!
I've an idea... Why don't we watch the New Year sunrise together this time?
There's a scenic spot only visited by locals in the know. You can get a full view of the town below, and the light morning mist makes for a real sight to see!
A long time ago, I used to stand there New Year's mornings and scream aloud that I'd become a superior knight...
All right, I think we've got a plan... Let's try hard to wake up early that day!

4

Happy New Year!
Just like last year, you came all this way to my home town. This is starting to become a yearly thing.
I've got something interesting I want to show you.
Would you look over there for a second?
Lancelot sets the small item he was holding in his hand on to the ground and lights it on fire.
Hahaha! Did the noise scare you?
This is what we do when the new year begins! The loud noise is supposed to keep bad spirits away.
And if you want extra luck, then you light this yourself!
That's what I used to tell Vane as a child to give him some courage. He was a scaredy cat.
But since you came all this way, be my guest! Light it up!
Don't worry. Just make sure you get as far away from it as possible after it's been lit. If you want, I'll stay right by your side.

5

I can't take any more... I'm so full!
Heheh, I didn't think I'd still be uncontrollably stuffing myself with mochi even at this age.
You managed to devour quite a lot yourself, (Captain). How many did you have?
T-that many? Then I guess you've got all the energy you'll need to participate in the annual New Year's kite-flying competition!
I'd been planning on making some final adjustments and practicing before it starts, but I'm too full to move right now...
Hm? Oh, that's a great idea! Okay, let's prepare ourselves in the meantime by doing some mental training until we can start running again.
First, we'll gauge the direction of the wind, then hold onto the kite and wait leeward for the right timing.
Next, we'll let the string out from the reel bit by bit and run windward!
Is it up? All right! Let's keep it flying like that and follow along with the wind!
Heheh, the mental training went perfectly! Now I can't wait to actually fly it!

1

Oh, that's right! Today's Valentine's Day.
You got me a gift, did you? Thank you! No matter if it's chocolates or macarons, I've got a real sweet tooth!

2

Oh! Have you brought another sweet gift for me this year, (Captain)?
I'll happily accept it, of course!
Wow... The wrapping is quite nice. Do you mind if I open it and have a little bite?
Mmm... Mmm... Incredible! I've never had anything so delicious! Where'd you get your hands on these?
What! You made them yourself?
I guess there's nothing you can't do, (Captain)! I've a whole new level of respect for you!
By the way... have you given chocolate to your valentine yet?
Hm? Why are you so quiet all of sudden?
I see, I see... You're embarrassed to say, right?
In exchange for your gift, I'll lend you an ear and some advice if you'd like. Come see me anytime!

3

Whew... Training sure feels good! What do you want to do after we take a break?
Hm? You brought some chocolate? That was good thinking on your part to bring a snack.
Huh? Oh, I see... Today is Valentine's Day, huh? I completely forgot...
Thank you. I'm glad I could get chocolates from you again this year!
Mmm... Delicious! It has a citrus-like aroma to it too. This really hits the spot after a good workout!
I'm the luckiest lad in the capital to get chocolate like this, filled with all your kindness.
Now, shall we resume our training?
(Captain)? Your cheeks are turning red. Are you all right? Did you push yourself too much while sparring?
Let's see, where's the water flask... Here, if you don't mind sharing the same flask with me, have some water!

4

(Captain)...
Yeah, I just finished a few things. Come inside.
This box... Oh! It's Valentine's Day!
Every year, without fail, you always remember me. Thank you!
Which one should I eat first...
Nom...
Yum. The chocolate you make really is good.
Getting something like this all to myself just makes me feel really special!
(Captain)... You're so red...
You're really happy?
Heh heh... I never tell a lie. Your chocolate is really tasty!
Now that my energy's been restored, I'm ready to get back to work!

5

(Captain)... Cough, cough...
Oh, it's nothing—just a small cold. Did you come to check up on me because you were worried?
What's this? Ah, that's right. It's Valentine's Day today, isn't it?
Wow, I'm so happy. I didn't have much of an appetite from my cold, but I was just in the mood for something sweet!
Cough, cough...
This isn't good. You shouldn't get too close to me, (Captain). You might catch my cold...
Don't worry. Vane made me some porridge for lunch, so I did have something to eat.
I'll be fine after some rest. It's still cold these days, so be sure to take care of yourself, okay?
Thank you. Good night.

Today's White Day, right?
Will you accept this token of my gratitude? I hope you like it...

2

I'm sorry for calling you here all of a sudden... I know it's just giving you a gift, but... being alone with you has gotten me a little nervous.
Ahem... Allow me to start over!
(Captain), your sincere thoughtfulness always leaves me in gratitude.
I hope that we can form a bond, bettering each other as we grow.
And so if there's anything I can do for you, then you need only ask.
Whew...
I'll be counting on you even more from now on, (Captain).
This is a token of my feelings for you. I hope you'll accept it!

3

(Captain), I got you a gift as thanks for Valentine's. Will you accept it?
Ah, but I'd like for you to read the letter attached to it later. I'm a little embarrassed to have you read it in front of me...
(Captain), allow me the chance to say this now. I'm so deeply grateful to you.
You come running whenever we're in trouble, and even when the journey gets tough, you never forget to check in on the capital...
What made me happiest is when you said you love the people and places found only in our kingdom. The elation I felt in that moment is still precious to me.
Ah... I guess I ended up saying almost everything in the letter... I should've done that from the beginning.
Ahem... Well, my point is that...
I'm grateful for all you do. Please accept this as a token of my thanks.

4

Good... I've finished patrolling the grounds, so time to call it a day.
I'm sorry you came all this way to Feendrache only to have to accompany me on duty.
I just wanted to know if you saw any flaws or areas we could improve when we patrol.
And I wanted to say just how much I appreciate you.

5

(Captain), do you have a moment?
Thank you for the chocolate the other day. Thanks to that, I'm feeling a lot better now!
I'm sorry if I made you worry. You coming to see me made me really happy.
Today, I wanted to repay you for your kindness.
So...
Here's something for you in return. I hope you like it!
Hm? Your face is a little red. Don't tell me you caught my cold...
No? Well, that's good then.
If you ever feel under the weather, you can count on me to be there for you.
Making sure you're nicely tucked up in bed is the least I can do.

Trick or treat!
If you don't hand over the candy, I'll play a trick on you!
Hahaha! I feel like a kid again!

2

Hm... Why the serious expression, (Captain)? You've received a particularly serious assignment, I take it!
What's that? You want to think of a prank horrible enough to make ne'er do wells think twice before committing evil?
Why would you make such a request of me? Surely someone else would be more suitable.
You wish to enlist my proven capacity for strategic thinking? Hm... I see.
Heh. When you put it that way, I suppose I have little choice. Besides... I can't very well deny a request from you, (Captain). Not one this important to you.
Very well. Gather information on the target's current flaws and failings. We're going to spook this one good.
Hehehe... It's been too long. I can't wait to get to work.

3

(Captain)! Look at you all covered in ink! What happened?
I see... The mischief-maker from last year has popped up again, yes?
No problem! Let me help you out for some real payback. Take a look at this note.
Heh! After last year's Halloween, I did some thinking and wrote up a few tricks we could try.
So, which one is your favorite? Honestly, I like them all!
Heh-heh! We're about to go all out, so the fun starts now!

4

What's wrong, (Captain)? Why are you hiding in this wooden box?
I see... When you tried to give candy to some children, they attacked you...
I may have a way of getting even.
Wait right there!
I've received intel on our enemies!
It appears their leader is a tempermental lass who is currently enroute for a surprise water gun attack.
We may have the wisdom that comes with age, but they have the numbers. I suggest we strike in their only blind spot.
I will hide here and you will be in that box over there...
! That's freezing!
Tch... Apart from the group I scouted, they had a strike team ready too?
We don't have a choice! We have to power our way through! You have our secret weapon ready, right, (Captain)?
All right...
Release the water balloon!

5

Oh, (Captain). What's the matter?
Wha!
Lancelot notices something hurtling toward him from behind (Captain) and immediately ducks.
What in the skies was that... Toy arrows?
And isn't that the troop who gave us that surprise attack before?
Don't tell me you decided to switch sides...
This sure is an unexpected twist...
Heh, but if that's how you're going to play... then I won't hold back either!
Lancelot picks up two toy arrows lying near his feet and holds them out like a pair of blades.
Get ready for the Twin Arrow Attack of the Pumpkin Festival! Here I come!
Haaah!

Happy Holidays Cutscenes

1

Season's greetings!
This time of year always reminds me of the times Vane and I stayed up late to try and see Santa Claus!

2

Ah... It's the holiday season. But I don't feel like going out with all the crowds. I guess I should tidy up my room a little...
Hm? Oh, hey there, (Captain). You want to help me clean my room? No way! I can't let you do that!
No!
I mean, it's not like I have anything to hide. It's just that you're the captain and it's your holiday break, you see...
Humph... You don't give up, do you? Fine. I'll let you help me just this once, (Captain)!
In exchange, I'll take you someplace to eat after we're done! Heheh... Now where should we go?

3

Today's the holiday party, huh? I remember going to those parties when I was a kid...
Heh-heh, it was so funny! Vane could never remember the words to the songs and made a mess of holiday caroling...
So I'd be sure to sing to him over and over again for practice. Ha-ha! What a great memory...
Huh? You want me to sing something now? I dunno... You can't just put me on the spot!
You really really want me to? Well, if you insist... But just a little.
Jingle bells! Jingle bells! Jingle all the way!
Oh what fun it is to sleigh on this jolly holiday!
A-ha-ha-ha! You're embarrassing me with all that clapping...
All right! Now it's your turn to sing for me, (Captain)... And don't try to blush your way out of it!

4

Happy holidays!
(Captain), did you look outside?
There's so much snow! It's a fluffy white world out there!
When I was young I would play outside by making snowmen on days like this.
Together, the body and head would be made of three big balls. The head would get a helmet which was just a bucket, and I think I even added a sword to make him look a soldier.
I'd name him after a famous warrior, and then Vane and I would salute him.
Heh heh... Those were fun times.
Huh? You want to see a warrior snowman?
As a matter of fact, I could make an even better snowman than before!
Will you help me make him especially big?
Let's surprise all the crew members!

5

Happy holidays!
Thanks for keeping watch out here on the deck despite it being so cold. Here, I brought you something warm to drink.
It's so cold you can even see your breath...
This reminds me of the time I patrolled the streets of Feendrache on a cold night like this before I became captain.
The cold was so brutal, I could feel it seeping into my bones...
An old lady thanked me and gave me a cup of hot tea to drink when she saw me patrolling out in the cold.
The warmth of the tea and the feeling of being depended on made me so happy. Thanks to that, I was able to keep going.
Maybe that's why I wanted to come and bring you a warm drink myself.
Since the party preparations are pretty much complete, would it be all right if I stayed and kept watch with you?
Heheh. All right then, let's stick this out together!

Feendrache of Days Gone By

Lancelot and Siegfried both participate in an audience with King Carl to speak of knight-in-training Arthur's discovery of the fabled holy sword, Excalibur. Lancelot learns more of the fallen country of Hibergreif, and the connections it may have had with Feendrache. He prepares for an expedition with a unit to the very place the sword was discovered, the valley of Camlann.

Lancelot: I see. It would appear that the sword Arthur found is indeed the blade of legends...
King Carl: That has become apparent. This document contains the research conducted on the matter by our scholars. Please take some time to read through it, Lancelot.
Lancelot: Thank you, Your Majesty. By your leave...
Some months have now passed since Arthur and his fellow knights-in-training returned from their tumultuous joint expedition.
Lancelot receives a summary of the research conducted on the holy sword during a routine report to King Carl.
The holy sword Excalibur—Arthur pulled the blade from stone during the joint expedition. It remained in the kingdom treasury until research could be arranged.
Once the necessary preparations were in place, the blade was relocated to a laboratory within the castle.
Lancelot: I understand the gist of their findings. Thank you, Your Majesty, for sharing this valuable information with me.
Siegfried: Your Majesty, I apologize for my tardiness.
Lancelot: Oh? What brings you here, Siegfried?
King Carl: That's quite all right. We've just begun our discussion concerning the holy sword.
Siegfried: Is that so? Has the blade proven to be the one from the legends?
Siegfried gazes inquisitively upon the sword laying beside the king.
Lancelot: Have you come to hear the report on the holy sword as well, Siegfried?
Siegfried: Indeed. His Majesty sent word of the mysterious blade.
King Carl: You have my apologies, Siegfried. I am aware that you have been searching for a way to halt your transformations.
Siegfried: It is of no concern, Your Majesty. After all, I have dedicated my life in service to the kingdom since the days of King Josef.
Siegfried: If there is anything I may do in service to my fatherland, then my duties as a knight of the kingdom take precedence.
Lancelot: I cannot help but feel ashamed, however. I wish it were something we could handle on our own.
Siegfried: Lancelot, you have the momentous duty of leading your order.
Siegfried: As I do not belong to an order, I am able to travel about more easily.
Lancelot: You speak the truth...
Lancelot: (It would appear I must rely on Siegfried once more...)
Siegfried: I still have to take responsibility for the uproar I caused.
Siegfried: As long as I reside in this country, there will be no shortage of troubles with the reconstruction.
Lancelot: (Siegfried still chooses not to rejoin the knights, despite having lead an order.)
Lancelot: (Even after exposing the truth about alma and its toxic by-product karmide... The citizens whom he saved from terrible affliction would surely love to have him.)
Lancelot: (Operating from the shadows and offering his assistance in our times of greatest need... Countless times has he saved the kingdom from certain ruin.)
Lancelot: (It would seem that he has grown accustomed to his life as a lone wolf.)
Siegfried: Let us begin, Your Highness. What have your scholars learned of the holy sword?
King Carl: Yes. As I have just told Lancelot, it would appear that this blade is the very one alluded to in the legends.
King Carl: The very same legends speak of Excalibur as a pair—both sword and sheath.
Lancelot: A sheath, you say?
Siegfried: I've heard the tales. The kingdom of Feendrache possesses the blade, and Hibergreif possesses the sheath.
Siegfried: It would seem that the existence of a sheath is not a well-known part of the legend in Feendrache.
Lancelot: Hibergreif... As in the neighboring kingdom that fell to ruin nigh on fourteen years ago? To hear its name come up now is quite unexpected.
King Carl: Long ago, the kingdoms of Feendrache and Hibergreif were staunch allies.
King Carl: Those days were before even mine and Josef's time.
Siegfried: By all accounts, the bonds of friendship between the two kingdoms frayed as time marched on.
Siegfried: It would not be presumptuous to assume that this is why the stories of the sheath would cease to be told across Feendrache.
Lancelot: This is the first time I am hearing of it. Hibergreif...
Lancelot: (This island is no stranger to strife. Countless kingdoms and countries have risen and fallen on this floating mass from time immemorial.)
Lancelot: Still, fourteen years is not such a long time. How did Hibergreif fall?
Siegfried: ...
Siegfried: Your Majesty, I have heard rumors of a formal request for assistance from Hibergreif...
King Josef: You do not need to concern yourself with that matter. I would have you focus all of your energy on subjugating Fafnir.
Siegfried: With all due respect, Your Majesty, the situation in Hibergreif is quite dire, is it not?
King Josef: Siegfried! I have no desire to dwell further on the subject. Now please, take your leave.
Siegfried: (That was fourteen years ago...)
Lancelot: Siegfried? Is it possible that you have something to share about those days?
Lancelot: You would have still belonged to the Royal Knights at that time, correct?
Siegfried: It was the very year I sealed Fafnir. I returned to the ranks of the Order of the Black Dragons as captain. The following year is when you applied to join, Lancelot.
Siegfried: When I heard of Hibergreif's demise, I was truly shocked.
Siegfried: As a knight of Feendrache well aware of our two kingdoms' histories, I knew deep within my heart that the fall of an ally could not be without consequence.
Lancelot: This... is the first time I am hearing of this...
Siegfried: I cannot say this with absolute certainty...
Siegfried: However, consider the matter of Sylph and the karmide, Lancelot. The very country that you had vowed to serve was hiding such disgraceful secrets.
Lancelot: It is very possible... that more such secrets remain...
King Carl: I cannot deny that my older brother's method of rule was far more stringent than my own. I have no doubt that he was forced to make some tough choices.
King Carl: If only I was not so unfit to rule... Perhaps I would be able to tell you what my brother knew.
Lancelot: Your Majesty need not to feel culpable.
Siegfried: It is as he says. You are not at fault here, Your Majesty.
King Carl: You are both too kind. I am capable, though, of recognizing my shortcomings.
Lancelot: ...
Lancelot: (I know His Majesty's feelings well. Even I heard of the citizens' unease with his rule.)
Lancelot: A loyal subject doesn't blindly follow a king's decrees. Loyalty means correcting the king when he has been led down the wrong path.
Lancelot: A knight doesn't just protect the king from threats. He protects the will of a king who loves his country and is loved by his subjects.
Lancelot: I think that's how true chivalry can play a role in protecting the realm.
Siegfried: I see. That's a good answer.
Lancelot: (That is what it means to be a knight. I have vowed to become a knight who can serve both king and country.)
Lancelot: (In order to do so, I must aim to uncover even the most deep and dark of secrets.)
Lancelot: (No stone may be left unturned if I am to properly carry out my duties.)
Siegfried: Pure speculation breeds misunderstanding.
Siegfried: I shall take it upon myself in gathering information concerning the fall of Hibergreif.
Siegfried: If I come across any promising leads, I shall arrange a meeting with Lancelot, Vane, and any other knights who would do well to be in the know.
King Carl: I am sorry for the extra trouble, Siegfried.
Siegfried: It is no trouble at all, Your Majesty. The more we discover about the holy sword, the more we shall know about the kingdom of Hibergreif.
Siegfried: The connection between the two would appear to be knowledge worth having.
Lancelot: Thank you, Siegfried.
Lancelot: Your Majesty, I have a request, if I may...
King Carl: Please go on.
Lancelot: Yes, Your Majesty. I would like to investigate the area where Arthur encountered the blade. I wish to lead a unit to Camlann.
Lancelot: Camlann lies within territory belonging to the family of Rowley. I cannot shake the feeling that he was planning something there at the time of his betrayal.
Lancelot: At present, we have dispatched an investigative unit to the site, but have been unable to find any leads. I wish to go there myself.
Lancelot: I have also heard reports of the cabal sneaking about the area. If I am able to find out anything more with my own two eyes, I feel it would be most helpful.
Siegfried: Indeed, it would make sense for the captain to survey the site himself.
Siegfried: I too have heard that Camlann possesses a deep connection with the holy sword.
Lancelot: Exactly. With Your Majesty's blessing...
King Carl: I understand where you are coming from. I shall allow it.
Siegfried: I shall remain in Feendrache for some time. If anything occurs here, I will cooperate with Vane in dealing with it.
Lancelot: That would put my mind at ease. Thank you again, Siegfried.
King Carl: With that being established... Lancelot, you will go to Camlann.
Lancelot: Yes, Your Majesty. I shall make the necessary preparations at once.
Lancelot stands at attention and answers with determination.
Lancelot knows not of what is to come to pass in the valley of Camlann.

A Knight's Loyalty

Lancelot's expedition to Camlann has so far proven to be unfruitful. Returning to their camp as night falls, Lancelot recalls Siegfried's words from their audience with the king—Feendrache is host to a slew of dark secrets stemming from the kingdom's past. He hears a mysterious voice that further challenges his conviction as a knight.

By finding the holy sword Excalibur, Arthur has essentially proven that it is not merely the stuff of legends spoken about in bedtime stories around Feendrache.
Lancelot leads a unit of the Order of the White Dragons to the valley of Camlann, the very spot where the blade was discovered, for further investigation.
Lancelot: According to Vane, the blade was found around this spot.
They follow a trail exhibiting few signs of human access. It leads them out of the forest and into a vast, rocky plain.
The desolate area appears unfit for inhabitation.
Lancelot: (At first glance, it would appear that there is nothing out of the ordinary, save for the extreme rockiness.)
Lancelot: I want each of you to investigate your section, just as we went over before. If you find anything, report back to me immediately.
White Dragon: Yes, sir!
Lancelot puts his unit to work, and begins conducting his own search of the area.
Lancelot: That's odd. According to Vane's map, the stone from which the blade was pulled should be just around here...
White Dragon: There are only small rocks to be found scattered around here. Nothing that would make for a pedestal housing a blade.
White Dragon: Forgive my insolence to Sir Vane, but could it be possible that his map is off?
Lancelot: Unlikely. While it is true he is less than... stellar at navigating, his mapmaking skill is second to none.
White Dragon: I see. Please forgive me.
Lancelot: No, I cannot fault you for assuming that about him.
Lancelot: Which makes it all the more confounding we have yet to discover anything. Perhaps someone has already taken the stone...
White Dragon: The holy sword was recovered in quite the beautiful state. I can't imagine it was exposed to the wild and the elements for such a long period of time.
Lancelot: That fact has also been bothering me. No matter how good of materials one uses in their craft, they are bound to break down and weather away with time.
Lancelot: For something as conspicuous as a sword in a stone, one would think the lord of the land would have discovered it sooner.
White Dragon: The more I ponder the situation, the more mysterious the circumstances surrounding it become.
They continue their investigation, but the effort ultimately proves to be fruitless. Night soon falls.
Lancelot mulls over the situation further after setting up camp with the other members of the unit.
Lancelot: (Luckily, we found no signs that anyone from the cabal had been wandering about. I would have expected to find the stone that housed the blade, however.)
Lancelot: (I wonder... How much stock are we to put in the fairy tales that also mention a lake and caves in the vicinity of the sword's resting place?)
Lancelot: (There was certainly nothing of the sort around the spot marked on Vane's map.)
Like any child of Feendrache, Lancelot is well-versed in the tale.
For one as interested in knighthood as he, it was practically required reading.
Lancelot: (Feendrache holding the blade, and Hibergreif holding the sheath...)
Lancelot: (As far as I remember in all of the books I read as a child, not one mention of a sheath was ever made.)
Lancelot: (If Excalibur truly does require the presence of both items to function, then perhaps the bond between our kingdoms was much deeper than I thought...)
Lancelot remembers the conversation between himself, King Carl, and Siegfried.
Lancelot: (Siegfried had nothing more to share after that...)
Lancelot: (He is certainly not one for cheap speculation.)
Lancelot: (What could have happened fourteen years ago in Feendrache... when Hibergreif fell?)
Lancelot: ...
???: Losing faith in your kingdom, are you?
Lancelot: ...!
Who's there?
Hearing a voice from outside the confines of his tent, Lancelot swiftly grabs his twin blades.
Mysterious Voice: Cast aside your swords. I have no intention of fighting you.
Mysterious Voice: Lancelot, knight of Feendrache—I have a question for you. Will you not follow me?
With those words, the voice goes silent.
Lancelot: (Who could that have been? Whoever it was seemed to know about me...)
Lancelot: (I don't think it was anyone with hostile intentions, either. It had a calming... almost nostalgic ring.)
With blades and lantern in hand, Lancelot peers outside of his tent.
A strange light, appearing as smoke tinged of bluish-white, stretches out into the night.
Lancelot: (Could this be a trap of some kind?)
Lancelot: (What is this feeling? I'm compelled to go after that voice, though I must do so alone.)
With his heart throbbing to the point of bursting, Lancelot quietly steps outside his tent.
Lancelot: (The light fades here... and if I'm not mistaken, this is where Arthur supposedly found the sword.)
Lancelot: Wh-what is this mist?
Mysterious Voice: So you have come, Lancelot, knight of Feendrache.
Lancelot: Who are you? Spare us both the pleasantries if you would be my enemy.
Mysterious Voice: I am the protector of this land, deemed so through an ancient pact.
Lancelot: Are you one connected to the holy sword Excalibur?
Mysterious Voice: The answer to your question will soon become clear.
Mysterious Voice: If you are indeed a true knight of Feendrache, if you would give anything for her protection and preservation, then we are bound by the strings of fate.
Lancelot: ...
Lancelot: I have dedicated my all to the kingdom. I have vowed to overcome any adversity to bring Feendrache peace and prosperity.
Mysterious Voice: Prove it so.
At those words, the wind blows away the mist that had been concealing the area.
The guiding light shines once again to reveal a mysterious path extending far into the darkness.
Lancelot: ...
Lancelot stands tall, and with a resolute stride takes his first steps along the trail.

A Knight's Loyalty: Scene 2

As Lancelot continues to engage with the mysterious voice, he finds himself seeing images of the past play out before his eyes. He witnesses the actions of Siegfried on the day of former King Josef's murder, and gains a deeper appreciation of the knight's noble actions in fulfilling the king's final request. The voice asks Lancelot if he can act in the same way as his mentor.

Lancelot: What! Is this... a throne room?
After taking a few steps along with the light, Lancelot suddenly finds himself in what appears to be a throne room.
Lancelot: What is going on?
Hmm?
???: ...Majesty... Your Majesty!
Lancelot: Siegfried?
Lancelot: Th-this is...
An unfamiliar scene unfolds before Lancelot's eyes. He sees Siegfried, equipped with the armor of the Order of the Black Dragons, hunched over a body.
It belongs to the former King Josef, now gasping for breath. Siegfried cradles the king's head in his arms as a pool of blood expands at his feet.
Siegfried: What monster... Who could do this!
King Josef: Consul General Isabella... Brandishing a blade... she suddenly slashed at me...
Siegfried: Isabella? But why!
King Josef: I was questioning her... about the toxic by-product of alma... karmide... She must be seeking... to hide the truth...
Siegfried: Karmide?
King Josef: The family's doctor... Boris... he knows everything...
Lancelot: No, could this be... Am I seeing what transpired on the day of the former king's murder?
Lancelot reaches out to comfort the distressed Siegfried.
His hand passes through the knight's body, as if nothing were there.
Lancelot: (Right, as this appears to be a scene from a memory, I would not be able to affect it in any way...)
Siegfried: Gah! I cannot stop the bleeding!
King Josef: Save your strength, Siegfried... My time is limited.
Siegfried: I cannot, Your Majesty! I will do everything in my power to ensure your well-being...
Siegfried can only continue to press on the king's wound. In a motion to calm down the frenetic knight, King Josef extends his hand to caress Siegfried's cheek.
King Josef: Please, Siegfried. Enough. Listen to what I have to say.
Siegfried: ...!
The king looks at Siegfried, his eyes still burning bright with vigor.
King Josef: Siegfried... a final order... one I can only entrust to you...
Siegfried: Yes, anything for you, Your Majesty.
King Josef: A great rot is spreading about Feendrache. I would have you expunge it before the kingdom falls to ruin.
Siegfried: It will be done.
King Josef: I am sorry, Siegfried. I can only... count on you... for this...
Siegfried: Your Majesty... Your Majesty!
Lancelot: Siegfried!
The doors to the throne room open with a mighty clang. Lancelot leads a group of the Black Dragons as they rush towards the scene.
Siegfried: Lancelot... His Majesty is...
Black Dragon: It is just as Isabella relayed. Captain Siegfried has assassinated the king.
Siegfried: ...!
What did you just say?
Lancelot: (That's right. We received a report from Isabella at the time that she had seen Siegfried stab the king.)
Lancelot: (My head was blank—I couldn't think straight. I could only rush to the throne room to verify the scene for myself...)
Lancelot: Captain Siegfried... please say it isn't so. To murder our beloved king...
Black Dragon: Vice Captain Lancelot, it is plain to see. This man has committed treason of the highest degree!
Black Dragon: So, the Dragonslayer has turned kingslayer!
Siegfried: How dare—
Lancelot: Siegfried, please. Tell us what really happened here.
Lancelot: Siegfried!
Siegfried: Lancelot...
Black Dragon: Tch, we have no time for this, Vice Captain Lancelot! Let us capture this traitor at once and deliver him to Consul General Isabella!
Black Dragon: Hyaaagh!
Black Dragon: Uogh!
Siegfried draws the greatsword on his back. He strikes down the assailing knight without hesitation.
Siegfried: ...!
Siegfried adopts the poise of a dragon over King Josef's body, his sword at the ready.
His bloodshot gaze pierces through each of the knights—it alone is enough to keep them at bay.
Lancelot: Sieg... fried...
Black Dragon: Call for Vice Captain Percival! The Order of the Black Dragons must unite in capturing this fiend!
Siegfried concedes that the knights are not willing to listen to his plight. He lays King Josef's head down gently, and takes flight to make his escape.
Black Dragon: He's getting away! After him!
Lancelot: (I've always wondered why Siegfried did not try to defend himself to us.)
Lancelot: (I think I understand now, though.)
Lancelot: (He was so overcome by emotion—the grief that came from losing his beloved king, and the righteous anger he felt after learning of Isabella's treachery...)
Lancelot: I should be after him, even if it is just a shadow...
Siegfried makes his way from the throne room to the king's private quarters. Without hesitation, he utilizes a hidden escape route found in the room.
The route empties into the capital, and the knight proceeds to the home of the doctor Boris under the cover of the night.
Boris: Why, if it isn't Sir Siegfried! What can I do for you?
Siegfried: Please excuse the late-night visit. I'll cut right to the chase. The king has been murdered at the hand of Consul General Isabella.
Boris: No, what? Could she have been trying to silence him on account of his knowledge of karmide?
Siegfried: I see that you are well aware of the surrounding circumstances already. I wish to hear everything you know. Would you be so kind as to put me up for the night?
Boris: Yes, yes, of course! Please, come on in.
Boris proves to be keenly aware of alma's toxic by-product and the implications it holds among those close to the king. He kindly affords Siegfried an escape.
Siegfried: I see. There can be no doubt, then, that karmide is truly harmful to those who may come into contact with it.
Boris: Indeed, though I have not had a chance to study the substance in its purest form. My researchers and I have been investigating the trace amounts found in soil and water.
Siegfried: It must be hidden away somewhere. We must find it.
Siegfried: Leave that task to me. Once I am able to get my hands on some pure karmide, may I ask you to study its effects on the human body, Boris?
Boris: You say to leave the hard part to you... Are you not presently being hunted by every night in the kingdom? Cease the thought for a bit and rest yourself.
Siegfried: I have no time for such a luxury. My tears have all been shed—all that remains is direct action on my part.
Siegfried: This is the final order I received with His Majesty's dying breath.
Boris: Such strength...
Boris: You have convinced me. Let us expose the dangers of alma production to all the citizens of the realm.
Siegfried: Boris, you have my eternal gratitude.
The two men engage in a firm handshake.
Later that night, Siegfried gazes up at the castle from his new quarters. He speaks to no one in particular.
Siegfried: Your Majesty, it pains me so to miss your requiem.
Siegfried: Please allow this knight to fulfill his promise...
A moment of respite now at hand, the pent-up emotions begin to flow forth from the man.
Siegfried: Sniff... Ngh...
Boris: Siegfried...
Siegfried: Boris, I am sorry that you would see me like this...
Boris: Worry not. After all, he was so dearly beloved to us both.
Boris: We can both grieve, if only for just one night. I do not think he would fault us for that.
Siegfried: Indeed...
Lancelot: ...
Lancelot: (That admiration was certainly something I witnessed firsthand... King Josef was more than just the ruler of the land to Siegfried...)
Lancelot: (It is very similar to how I have looked up to Siegfried himself...)
As the two men weep and comfort each other, Lancelot can do naught but stare on.
Siegfried's quest to cleanse Feendrache of its ills begins the next day.
Lancelot witnesses the true extent of the knight's harsh, lonely plight.
Siegfried: So this is how the karmide has been handled. After being stored in this facility beneath the castle, it is then disposed of by dumping it in the Howling Valley.
Black Dragon: You! How did you get in here!
Siegfried: Oho, so Isabella's lapdogs finally make their appearance. I'm here under my king's orders. What of it?
Black Dragon: Guogh!
Siegfried: All that remains is for Boris to present the scroll with his findings to the new King Carl...
Boris's Voice: Ahhh!
Siegfried: That voice!
Boris: Ngh... You... you scum!
Isabella's Assassin: Orders from Isabella. It's nothing personal.
Isabella's Assassin: Wha!
Siegfried crashes through a window in Boris' home. His eyebrows furrow as he looks up to assess the situation.
Siegfried: (Tch... I pray I am not too late...)
Siegfried: Boris, can you hear me? Can you speak?
Boris: Th-the scroll for King Carl... Middle drawer... Here is... the key...
Siegfried: Understood.
Isabella's Assassin: I won't let you have it. Instead, why don't you watch as we raze it all to—
Isabella's Assassin: Gah!
Siegfried wastes no time in slinging the assassin out of the window.
Siegfried: I've retrieved the scroll, Boris. Let us make haste.
Boris: ...
Siegfried: ...!
Siegfried: The heat from the flames must be unbearable. We must get outside.
Lancelot: (The only ally he had left...)
Lancelot: (I must admit that I have hardly thought of the loneliness of his battle... Such strength of heart maintained until Isabella's evil schemes were exposed...)
With his sole ally now gone, Siegfried's struggle grows ever more desperate.
The newly-established Order of the White Dragons continues to give chase, leaving the knight with no choice but to spend his nights in the wild, greatsword in hand.
No force is powerful enough to dissuade him from the final duty to his king. He will not rest until Isabella is exposed and Feendrache cleansed of its sordid ways.
Mysterious Voice: You have just witnessed scenes from a most painful memory. The man you admire as a mentor gave everything to serve his kingdom.
Mysterious Voice: Answer me this. Are you able, and willing, to do the same?
Lancelot: I...
Lancelot struggles to declare his intent.

A Knight's Loyalty: Scene 3

Witnessing Siegfried's struggle initially causes Lancelot to falter in his conviction as a loyal knight of Feendrache. He soon comes to realize that he does not have to imitate Siegfried, however, and that with the support of his comrades, he can proudly stand in front as a splendid leader of the Order of the White Dragons. He gains a new set of armor and pair of swords to do battle with his past self.

Mysterious Voice: Answer me this. Are you able, and willing, to do the same?
Lancelot: ...
Lancelot: (Siegfried never ceases to amaze... To think that he went through that entire ordeal with no other soul being the wiser...)
Lancelot: (As for me... What was I even thinking at that time?)
As Lancelot ponders his response, the surrounding fog whisps about to reveal a familiar scene.
Lancelot: Thank you for your report. It would appear that our reorganization to the Order of the White Dragons has been fully realized. Have you settled in comfortably?
White Dragon: Yes, and it's all thanks to you, Captain Lancelot.
Lancelot: My efforts alone would not have allowed such a smooth transition. I have all of you to thank for your cooperation.
White Dragon: You should hear what the rest of the men are saying about you. That the new captain possesses a cool head and a clear vision for the order.
Lancelot: Is that so? I take pride in the fact that my troops are satisfied with my methods.
White Dragon: Yes! There is one more thing I would like to report.
Lancelot: What is it?
White Dragon: Mere days ago, there were sightings of a man clad in black armor and wielding a greatsword in a forest near the capital.
Lancelot: I see. Thank you for telling me. I will decide on our next course of action.
White Dragon: Yes, sir. With that, please excuse me.
White Dragon: (Speaking to the captain directly can be quite intimidating... Ever since vice captain Percival and Vane have departed the capital we've had to report to him...)
Lancelot: Siegfried... You would dare show your face around here again?
Lancelot: What could he be after? Does he have any business with us?
Lancelot: Ridiculous. Does he think I would have forgotten that face contorted in pure madness?
Lancelot: ...
Lancelot: (I had my hands full with reorganizing the order. But that was not all that was on my mind.)
Lancelot: (He was always on my mind, yet I could never bring myself to think about the situation and his motives calmly.)
Lancelot: (Though I despised and loathed him, moreover, I was afraid of him.)
Lancelot: (Rather than seeking to discover the truth, I was always looking away from it.)
Lancelot: (I couldn't hold a candle to him...)
Mysterious Voice: Feendrache is a land bearing a dark path and countless secrets.
Mysterious Voice: It would appear that you have become quite cognizant of this fact.
Mysterious Voice: Though I cannot reveal everything to you now, the truth remains waiting to be discovered.
Mysterious Voice: Answer me this. How will you face the truth? Will you remain loyal in your resolve to serve your country?
Mysterious Voice: Though you are aware of the myriad sins of the nation, why do you continue to pledge your allegiance?
Lancelot: (This interrogation pains me, though they speak no falsehood...)
Lancelot: (How can I rationalize serving such a kingdom?)
Lancelot falls to his knees. Having witnessed the struggles that his mentor had faced, he loses the will to stride ahead.
Lancelot: (My efforts would pale in comparison to Siegfried's. I am not strong enough to soldier on like he did.)
Mysterious Voice: Has it come to this? It seems I have misjudged you, Lancelot.
Mysterious Voice: Captain of the Order of the White Dragons of Feendrache? How farcical. You should depart the capital at once—
???: Hey! Lancelot!
Lancelot: That voice...
A familiar figure emerges from the fog. He begins to shout words of encouragement.
Vane: I'm not brainy enough to figure out this kind of stuff!
Vane: But I do trust you! So just follow your heart!
Vane: Even if it means being labeled as a traitor by everyone, then so be it! I'll always be your friend!
Lancelot: Vane...
Lancelot recalls the moment he was forced to confront the truth about alma and of Isabella's treachery. Vane's words echo the very same as they had then.
Percival: Need I repeat myself once more?
Percival: If you're gonna lose your cool and rush headlong into the enemy, you'll just be throwing your life away. What do you think we rescued you for?
Lancelot hears once more the words Percival used to calm him down when Feendrache teetered on the brink of destruction.
Lancelot: You're never afraid to speak your mind, Percival. An envious quality for a knight.
Siegfried: You're the captain now. Are you satisfied with ceding your position to me?
Siegfried: Were you leading the order with such feeble resolve?
Lancelot: "That's not true." My answer, at the time.
Lancelot: Ever since I accepted the position of captain of the Order of White Dragons from His Majesty, my intention has remained singular.
Lancelot: I vowed to protect this country. No matter the hardships and trials we may face, I pledged to stand before all with my head held high.
As if to further affirm his intention, Lancelot turns to face his companions standing in the mist.
He sees not only his most trusted comrades, but also the scores of people he has promised to protect.
Lancelot: Though I may not possess strength to hold a candle to Siegfried's own, I shall not falter any longer.
Lancelot: For all my friends—for all the people—who have supported me... I will stand tall and continue to move forward.
Lancelot: That is my resolve as a knight of Feendrache... As captain of the Order of the White Dragons!
Upon making his declaration, Lancelot's body is enveloped in light. His armor becomes white as snow, and the twin swords in his hands emit an icy glow.
The fog gives ways, revealing the training grounds of the knights of Feendrache.
Lancelot: Hyaaah! Hah!
Lancelot: ...
Lancelot sees his past self training alone. Approaching slowly, he can hear the young knight shouting.
Lancelot: Siegfried... Siegfried!
Lancelot: You're not thinking straight. Cool your head and reevaluate the situation.
Lancelot: I will never become like him...
Lancelot: Such nonsense... You will never truly throw away your admiration for Siegfried.
Lancelot: Then I should become just like him!
Lancelot: No, that is not the way. You are Lancelot, not Siegfried.
Lancelot: I will show you! The path that a true knight of Feendrache must tread!
Lancelot: Hyaaah!
Lancelot: Come at me! My triumph over you shall stand testament to my loyalty!

A Knight's Loyalty: Scene 4

After Lancelot defeats his past self, the mysterious voice allows him to keep the new armor and swords. He reports the happening to King Carl, who informs him that the mysterious voice he encountered may have belonged to an ancient fairy of Feendrache. Lancelot informs Siegfried of his newfound resolve, much to the mentor's joy.

Lancelot: Haaa!
Lancelot: ...
Lancelot: Pant, pant...
Mysterious Voice: Well done. You tread a righteous path, and have conquered your past weaknesses, Lancelot.
Lancelot: Would it not have taken until this moment. I have my answer.
Lancelot: Though I may implore the aid of my comrades, I will not view it as a crutch. It will serve as the encouragement I need to improve myself further.
Lancelot: That is what I can do as a knight of Feendrache.
Mysterious Voice: A fine answer. If you can recognize your allies' abilities as an extension of your own power, there is scant anything you shall not be able to overcome.
Mysterious Voice: I honor you as a true knight of Feendrache, and offer unto you ownership of the armor and weapons you stand with now.
Lancelot: You have my thanks.
Mysterious Voice: No matter what you may discover, do not forget that resolve.
Mysterious Voice: I trust the Feendrache lies within the hands of one who is truly just.
Lancelot: The fog has lifted...
The mysterious fog that had played host to all manner of visions dissipates, revealing the rocky terrain of Camlann once more.
Lancelot is clad in snow-white armor; he grasps icy twin swords in either hand. Filled with a radiant and renewed sense of purpose, he looks up to the night sky.
Upon returning to the capital, Lancelot meets with King Carl to share his findings.
King Carl: To think such a thing would occur in Camlann! I am relieved that you encountered no malicious intent.
Siegfried: It seems you went through quite the ordeal. That armor and those swords must be the proof of your accomplishment.
Lancelot: I believe the very same. I felt no hostility from the voice, however I am unable to say with any certainty with whom or what I was speaking to.
King Carl: Oho... then perhaps it was one of the fairies who are said to reside across the realm.
Lancelot: A fairy?
King Carl: It is a legend that has been passed down in the royal family for generations. They have served as guardians to this land for the past five hundred years.
King Carl: Since the end of The War and the rule of the Astrals, they are said to have lent their assistance toward the founding of the kingdom.
Lancelot: How fascinating... This is my first time hearing of such. It is true that the voice did not seem to be that of a mortal.
King Carl: Lancelot, you are familiar with the tale of primal beast Sylph, yes? That she was created by an Astral after the death of his skydweller lover?
King Carl: According to the same legends, the Astrals bequeathed unto the realm fairies possessive of great powers.
King Carl: I have been wondering if perhaps the new equipment you now wield, as well as the holy sword Excalibur could in fact be of Astral origin.
Lancelot: That certainly seems plausible.
Lancelot shifts his gaze to the twin blades.
Lancelot: If that is indeed the case, then I have come to possess some truly awesome power.
Lancelot: To think that Feendrache would be considered so important in the eyes of the Astrals that they would go to such lengths to protect it.
King Carl: It is quite amazing, isn't it? The people of Feendrache—our land and culture in all of its beauty... This is truly a country to be proud of.
Lancelot: Yes, it is.
Lancelot: I cannot shake the feeling, however, that soon we may be facing crises ever more severe.
Lancelot: Our country may be in great peril if the fairies would reawaken after hiding dormant for so long.
King Carl: Indeed, and so we cannot afford to rest on our laurels.
Siegfried: Perhaps the appearance of the holy sword is a sign of greater things to come.
Lancelot: I have steeled myself in facing any such challenge head on. That is my duty as a knight of Feendrache.
A great sense of courage wells up inside the knight as he thinks once again about the ordeal in Camlann.
Lancelot stands directly in front of Siegfried, who had remained ever at the king's side.
Lancelot: Siegfried, I was still a knight-in-training when I encountered you with King Josef.
Siegfried: So you were.
Lancelot: I apologize once more for failing to grasp at the truth at that time.
Lancelot: Though you were stricken with grief after the death of His Majesty King Josef, you never wavered in your sense of duty. Your devotion is nothing short of commendable.
Lancelot: If I were in your boots at the time, I do not think I would have persevered in such a lonely fight. It is an incredible honor to have had a mentor such as you, Siegfried.
Siegfried: ...
Siegfried: I simply chose to fight alone. There were other ways I could have gone about exposing Isabella at that time.
Siegfried: It was a choice that caused a great deal of chaos both within the country and within the order, and that is something I regret.
Siegfried: I deemed it to be the only way for me to go about His Majesty's final mission, but if asked if I think it was the best way, I can only shake my head.
Lancelot: Oh, really?
Siegfried: My mind often wanders back to that day. I have even thought about what I would have done if it was you, Lancelot, who was framed for King Josef's murder.
Siegfried: Even then, I recognized your ability to win people over to your way of thinking; to have them lend you their aid.
Siegfried: Perhaps if it was you, both the evils of karmide and the machinations of Isabella would have been revealed much sooner.
Lancelot: I'm not sure that would...
Siegfried: It was just a thought.
Siegfried: In truth, Lancelot, even after that incident, the fact that you were still able to look up to me as a mentor—I took great solace in that.
Siegfried: However, I would not have you try to be me. You are not me.
Lancelot: Yes, I recognize that even if we share in the same ideals, we are very different people.
Siegfried: Though I knew how to swing a sword from the day I joined the order, I struggled with making meaningful connections with my fellow knights.
Siegfried: You may have learned the way of the blade from me, but the one thing I could never claim to have given you is your ability to win the hearts of your comrades.
Siegfried: Knights should not concern themselves primarily in matters of combat. Instead, it is important to focus on how you can protect the country in your own way.
Lancelot: Of course.
Lancelot: Siegfried, though it may sound a tad impertinent, I want to say one more thing.
Siegfried: By all means.
Lancelot: I have decided to become a leader who can rely on the strength of my comrades.
Lancelot: And that includes you, Siegfried.
Lancelot: I hope that not only will I be able to rely on your aid, but that we can lead the kingdom to even greater heights by doing so.
Siegfried: ...!
Siegfried: Hehe... That is quite the responsibility you would place on my shoulders.
Lancelot: Was that too much to assume after all?
Siegfried: No. In truth, I am glad that you have come to realize your true potential as a leader. I would be honored to lend my hand in any way.
Siegfried: (At times I worried you could not tell left from right, Lancelot. Just look at how much you have grown.)
Siegfried: I'm expecting great things of you, Lancelot.
Lancelot: I won't let you down!
Many truths remain concealed in Feendrache's past.
Lancelot is not lacking in allies who are more than willing to help him uncover even the darkest of secrets.
