What's Jiangshi?
Satyr reads a book from Nezha's personal library about jiangshi. Despite their scariness, she also finds them somehow cute and decides to dress up as one for Halloween. Having little knowledge of jiangshi but still wanting to fully immerse herself in the role, she and Nezha begin researching them.
The weather outside is beautiful, but two primal beasts have chosen an indoor activity for today.
Satyr: Run...
Nezha: ...
Satyr: Will they make it?
Nezha: ...
Nezha and Satyr are both engrossed in their own respective tomes of adventure.
Satyr: Eeek!
Nezha: ...?
Satyr squeaks out a shriek, causing Nezha to shoot a glance her way.
When he sees that Satyr's eyes are still glued to the open pages in her lap, he quickly returns back to his own text-based world.
Satyr: Awww! No way!
Satyr: You're kidding me!
Satyr carries on with her unprompted commentary as she continues to read.
Finally she closes the book.
Satyr: Phew... What a spine-tingling tale!
Nezha: Did you finish it?
Satyr: Yep! Definitely on the scary side, but I couldn't put it down!
Nezha: Is that so? Which one did you read?
Satyr: This one! It's about creepy creatures called jiangshi.
Satyr: Like, I was afraid to turn the page, but at the same time, I just had to know what happens next! Thanks for letting me borrow it!
Nezha: I'm glad you enjoyed it. This personal library I'm building is paying off nicely.
Satyr: Seems like you've got books on almost everything, Nez. I've never heard of jiangshi until now.
Satyr picks up the book she just finished and flips through the pages.
Satyr: Right here! This is the passage that gave me chills!
Satyr: It says jiangshi will always find you no matter how well you hide.
Nezha: True, though it is possible to hold your breath to escape detection if I remember that section correctly.
Satyr: Uh-huh! Too bad the story's protag couldn't stop hiccupping.
Satyr: I know it's supposed to be a tense moment and everything, but that part made me giggle.
Nezha: Yes, it does sound absurd, though I must say the juxtaposition of suspense and humor paints a marvelous scene.
Satyr: Oh, and another thing...
Satyr: I certainly wouldn't wanna run into jiangshi, but the illustrations in this book make them look kinda cute.
Satyr: I like how long and billowy their robe sleeves are, and I've never seen hats like those either.
Satyr: Something about the talisman that's stuck to their forehead is so mysterious...
Satyr: Oh! I just got a brilliant idea!
Satyr smacks her fist into her palm.
Satyr: Halloween is just around the corner, isn't it?
Nezha: Yes. The ship is buzzing with activity as many of our friends have started gearing up for the holiday.
Satyr: Yeah, I saw! So there I was, pondering how I could get in on the fun.
Nezha: I think I know where this is going.
Satyr: Teeheehee!
Satyr: Well, with jiangshi being things that go bump in the night, I can't think of a more perfect Halloween costume!
Nezha: And rightly so.
Satyr: Okay, my mind's made up: I'm gonna go as a jiangshi!
Nezha: Good choice. I can't wait to see how it turns out.
Satyr: Thanks, Nez! Where do I even begin though...
Satyr: Obviously I have to put the costume together, but I think the first thing I should do is find out more about the subject matter.
Satyr: Think you could lend me a hand in that department?
Nezha: Of course. I'm certain I can find a way to be useful.
Satyr: Woo-hoo! Much love, Nez. This is gonna be a blast!
Satyr's excitement is uncontainable. It even washes over Nezha, bringing a big smile to his face.
Ready for Hop Scares
After hearing from Nezha that jiangshi resemble zombies, Satyr interviews Meg about the zombie incident that occurred in Auguste. The two discuss the similarities and differences between jiangshi and zombies, with Meg expressing how terrified she was watching her dearest friends join the undead.
Nezha: I'll impart my current knowledge of jiangshi to get you started.
Satyr: Lay it on me!
Satyr and Nezha are researching jiangshi so that Satyr's costume can be as authentic as possible.
Nezha: Jiangshi are said to be comparable to zombies, though regional differences have given rise to variations in their portrayals over time.
Satyr: Zombies, huh? Gotcha! Not that I know much about zombies either...
Nezha: Zombies are far more prevalent in creative works than jiangshi.
Nezha: If I dug around in my room, I'm sure I'd find zombie-related materials. Barring that, a trip to the library will easily turn up a plethora of references.
Nezha: But interviewing people who have firsthand experiences with zombies is the best way to go in my opinion.
Satyr: That's a great idea! We've definitely got crew members who've gone toe-to-toe with zombies before.
Satyr: I'll go see who I can find!
Meg: And that's why you came to me?
Satyr: Yep! While Nez hits the books, I'm hitting the streets. Er, deck.
Satyr: I heard you played a big role in stopping a crazy zombie invasion on Auguste...
The Auguste Isles. Blessed with pristine beaches and top-class lodging, it's one of the most popular vacation spots in the skies.
But the island has seen its share of disasters throughout its history. In recent times, it was struck by a large wave—of zombies.
Suspicious Person: Graaaah!
Meg: Hah!
Suspicious Person: Grrrrr...
Suspicious Person: Aaaarrrrg...
Zombified people flooded the streets, and even the crew suffered casualties.
However, Meg, (Captain), and other survivors battled back against the tide, saving everyone and Auguste from a gruesome end.
Satyr: If you could give me any info, that'd be super awesome. Would that be okay?
Meg: Well, I can't speak about jiangshi, but would the zombies I fought be good enough?
Satyr: Absolutely! Every little detail will go a long way toward making my costume better!
Meg: Okay, let me think...
Meg: So it turns out the whole zombie thing was a scheme cooked up by the former chairperson of Auguste's tourism association.
Meg: He created a virus that zombified living creatures.
Meg: The virus was spread by zombified fish at first, but then people started catching it too...
Meg: And if you got bitten by an infected person, that was all it took to join the undead army.
Meg: As you might've guessed, things got out of control fast...
Satyr: I see, I see... The virus spreads when a healthy person is bitten by a zombie.
Meg: Thankfully, (Captain) and others were able to return everyone back to normal and save the day.
Meg: So does what I said about zombies sound like jiangshi?
Satyr: Well, jiangshi are more like reanimated corpses.
Meg: As in, they were already dead to begin with? Brr... Way different from the zombies I encountered then.
Meg: Oh, on the other hand, I do remember hearing that zombified flesh rots over time...
Meg: So if the zombification isn't cured, that person would end up as a corpse anyway!
Satyr: Noooo!
Satyr: Ah, I just thought of another thing they have in common—they both hunt down the living.
Meg: Right... A zombie will instantly chase after any normies they spot.
Meg: Here's something interesting. Talking to them didn't seem to do anything, but they did respond to sound.
Satyr: Yikes! I don't know if I could keep quiet, even if my life depended on it!
Satyr: Did you know that jiangshi can detect someone by their breathing?
Meg: Are you serious? Feels like holding your breath in that situation is so much harder than not making a sound...
Satyr: Yeah, probably.
The two are thoroughly engrossed in the topic of zombies and jiangshi.
Satyr: What do you think is the scariest thing about zombies?
Meg: Hm... It was chaos on Auguste, so it's not like I had time to stop and think about it...
Meg: I guess there's nothing worse than seeing friends and loved ones become zombies.
Meg: Their skin turns sickly, almost ashen, and they jerk around with this unnatural motion...
Meg: They don't feel pain either. Some are still able to say a few words, but the compulsion to attack people is too strong.
Meg: Imagine staring at a rotting, shambling thing that was once your best friend... Would you have the strength to go on?
Satyr: Gosh... I don't know what I'd do...
Ready for Hop Scares: Scene 2
Mari barges into Satyr and Meg's conversation mostly to fawn over Meg, but she does tell Satyr what it was like to be a zombie. Satyr regroups with Nezha and discovers that the many depictions of jiangshi often contradict each other. Rather than create a costume that fits every criteria, Satyr decides to give it her own spin.
Satyr and Meg continue their animated discussion about zombies and jiangshi, when all of a sudden...
???: Aha! There you are!
Mari: Found you, Meg!
Mari comes jogging over and throws her arms around Meg.
Meg: Oof! Mari!
Mari: Where were you? I finally had time off to come visit, and you ditched me. That's so mean.
Meg: You worry too much. I wouldn't run off like that.
Satyr: Sorry for pulling Meg aside, Mari. I only wanted to ask her a few things real quick.
Mari: Is that so? And who are you again?
Satyr: I'm Satyr, friend of (Captain) and the crew!
Mari: Fine, whatever. Mind explaining what's the deal with this private meeting?
Meg: I'm telling Satyr about the zombie incident that happened on Auguste.
Mari: Ick! Why even bring that up again?
Satyr: Because I asked her to...
Mari: Hmm... You picked a tough one for your costume.
Satyr: It's not enough just to look like a jiangshi—I want to become a jiangshi.
Satyr: That's why I'm gathering all the info I can find.
Mari: Quite the researcher we have here...
Satyr: Hang on a minute...
Meg: What is it?
Satyr: I heard you were bitten by a zombie, Mari. What was it like being a—
Satyr: Oh no, I'm so sorry! I shouldn't ask such a sensitive question! Never mind!
Mari: It's fine. It honestly wasn't that traumatizing or anything.
Mari: The thing is, my brain was hazy throughout the whole ordeal.
Mari: Like, I was aware to a certain extent, but I couldn't focus on specific details.
Mari: The tourism association launched a follow-up investigation and found that the zombified townspeople had even less control over themselves.
Mari: All they could think about was chomping down on others and spreading the virus.
Mari: Not by choice, obviously. They were just following orders from the former chairperson.
Satyr: Ah, okay...
Satyr: Thank you, Mari! That was super helpful!
Mari: Sure. Good luck with your costume.
Satyr: Thanks! It's gonna blow everyone's socks off!
Mari quickly loses interest in Satyr and embraces Meg in another big hug.
Mari: Speaking of Halloween...
Meg: Were you thinking of dressing up too?
Mari: That depends. Now, I know you'd look great in any costume.
Mari: But it got me thinking... What if we went all-out and did your makeup to match the outfit too?
Mari: I totally want to see you fully transformed! Got anything in mind about what to go as?
Meg: Um, no idea... It never crossed my mind, so...
Mari: Oooh! Then why don't we both wear the same thing! Wouldn't that be fun?
Mari: Hehe... I'm already picturing a dozen different outfits in my head, and you look stunning in every single one of them!
Meg: You think so?
Mari: I know so! There's only one Meg, and that's what makes you so Megmerizing!
Mari: Whatever you decide to dress up as, you own that persona. No one else can copy your originality!
Satyr: Teehee... They make such a lively twosome!
Satyr: And that about wraps up what I learned!
Nezha: Well done.
After conferring with Meg and Mari, Satyr has reconvened with Nezha.
Satyr: Find anything juicy on your end?
Nezha: I don't know if I'd call it "juicy," but first off, the paper talisman on the forehead is a key characteristic of jiangshi.
Nezha: By inscribing the talisman with commands, it allows the inscriber to control the jiangshi.
Nezha: Next is the way they move.
Satyr: Oh, yeah. They go hoppity-hop with their arms out in front like this...
Satyr extends both of her arms out directly in front of her and performs a series of lurching jumps.
Nezha: Yes. The reason for such peculiar locomotion is that they are corpses.
Nezha: After a living creature passes, its body stiffens over time, and the joints can no longer bend.
Satyr: Sounds logical to me! Then I'll have to move like this the entire time.
Nezha: Bear in mind that not all depictions of jiangshi are the same. There are minor differences depending on which source you go by.
Nezha: Deviations in how they move, how they attack people...
Nezha: Or even whether jiangshi are able to turn the people they attack into jiangshi.
Satyr: Boy, that complicates things a bit. How am I supposed to piece everything together...
Nezha: Think of it this way: No singular interpretation is more correct than another. Besides, it's a Halloween costume.
Nezha: I believe Mari made a good point earlier.
Mari: Whatever you decide to dress up as, you own that persona. No one else can copy your originality!
Nezha: So going by her words, why not create a rendition that's entirely your own?
Satyr: Of course! No one said I had to follow someone else's example.
Satyr: I already have some ideas...
Satyr grabs a large sheet of paper and hovers over it with a pen.
Satyr: Time to start designing.
Satyr: Gotta make sure the talisman is front and center... The sleeves and hat are too cute, so those should be a bit bigger... Move this over here...
As Halloween creeps ever closer, Satyr happily toils away putting together her bespoke costume.
Ready for Hop Scares: Scene 3
Satyr completes her jiangshi costume days before Halloween and wants to give it a test run. With Nezha's help, she lures Medusa and Baal into a small room and scares the living daylights out of the two. Despite the tongue-lashing from Medusa following the prank, Satyr couldn't be happier to spend time with the primal pals.
Satyr has spent several days working on her costume, but it's not Halloween just yet.
Medusa: Nezha? We're here.
Baal: Seems he's not though.
Medusa and Baal have come to a storage room as requested by Nezha.
Medusa: So where is he then? He said it was an emergency, and to drop what we were doing and get over here!
Baal: Somehow I get the feeling this is a big case of nothing...
Medusa: That doofus... Hmph, why's it so dark in—
Medusa: Whaaa!
Venturing further into the room, Medusa trips over something.
Medusa: Ugh, what did I step on?
Medusa: Huh? Satyr?
Satyr: ...
Medusa: What are you doing in here? Are you sleeping?
Satyr: ...
However, Satyr remains motionless and unresponsive to Medusa's questioning.
Medusa: Satyr?
Baal: What's going on?
Medusa: I don't know. I think Satyr's sleeping maybe?
Baal: ...?
Baal drops down beside Satyr and feels her cheek.
Baal: She's freezing cold.
Medusa: Wh-why?
Satyr: ...
Medusa: C'mon, Satyr! That's enough! It's time to wake up!
Medusa: Eeek!
Satyr: ...
When Medusa reaches out to shake Satyr awake, the prone primal pops up like a spring.
Medusa: Um... Satyr?
Satyr: Urrgh...
A hideous groan gurgles from the back of Satyr's throat as her body twitches erratically.
Medusa: Wh-what...
Satyr: Med... dy...
Satyr: Graagh...
Medusa: H-huh?
Suddenly Satyr lunges at Medusa. Baal immediately intercepts the attack and desperately holds the crazed primal back.
Baal: Hey! What are you doing!
Satyr: Meddy... Baally...
Satyr: Rrragh...
Medusa: Aaaagh!
Baal: Listen to me!
Satyr: Graaah...
Jerking around like a marionette, Satyr flails at her cornered prey.
Medusa: What's wrong with you! Get away from me!
Terror grips Medusa as she bangs against the walls of the dark, cramped room, unable to find a way out.
Medusa: Sob... Why is this happening...
Baal: Get a grip! Crying isn't going to solve anything!
Medusa: I'm not crying! Sheesh!
Medusa: Satyr, you dummy! Quit messing around!
Medusa: Why is there a piece of paper stuck to your face! I'm taking it off!
Panicked and out of options, Medusa tackles Satyr and rips off the talisman.
Satyr: ...!
The jiangshi collapses lifelessly to the floor as if the strings holding it up have been cut.
Medusa: Satyr? Hey, are you...
Satyr: ...
Medusa: Um...
Nezha: What did you do!
Nezha suddenly bursts into the room. He takes one look at Satyr's limp body, and the blood drains from his face.
Nezha: Oh no... Don't tell me you tore off the talisman!
Medusa: Huh? Th-the what?
Satyr was acting weird—
Nezha: Fool! Do you realize what you've done!
Medusa: ...?
Nezha: That talisman was her lifeline!
Nezha: The frail thread barely tying her soul to her body! Without it, she's...
Medusa: Wh-what are you saying?
Nezha: She's no longer with us...
Medusa: ...!
Baal: Sigh...
Baal quietly shakes his head behind Medusa, who has gone white as a sheet.
Baal: Since when do we primal beasts adhere to the mortal concept of a soul?
Medusa: Huh?
Nezha: Exactly.
Medusa: Exactly?
Satyr: Gotcha!
Medusa: Yaaaah!
Satyr: How was that, Meddy? Was I terrifying or what?
Medusa: I don't... Huh?
Satyr: This is my Halloween costume. I'm dressed up as something called a jiangshi.
Medusa: A c-costume?
Satyr: Yes, indeedy! I just finished putting it together, so I figured I'd practice my performance.
Medusa: What is wrong with you!
The smaller primal grabs Satyr and gives her a thorough shaking.
Medusa: Are you stupid!
Medusa: You were acting this whole time? Tell me why your body is so cold then!
Satyr: Jiangshi are corpses, so they're supposed to be cold.
Satyr: Which is why I bathed in ice I got from Auguste.
Medusa: That's so dumb! You're practically asking to catch a cold!
Satyr: Aw, I'm sorry, Meddy! Please don't be mad!
Medusa: Did you expect me to be happy?
Baal: Maybe it's your own fault for being tricked so hard by her prank.
Medusa: Hey, what's that supposed to mean!
Baal: When Nezha said she lost her soul, that should've tipped you off, considering we primals are essentially immortal.
Medusa: That's not the problem here, Baal! Besides, don't pretend like you weren't a fraidy-cat!
Baal: Fine, I'll admit I was shocked, but at least I'm not a crybaby like you.
Medusa: I told you already! I wasn't crying!
Satyr: Now, now, let's not fight, you two.
Medusa: You started this!
Satyr: Meep!
Medusa: Did you even think about what would happen on Halloween if you did this?
Medusa: A stunt like that is gonna make kids cry for real!
Satyr: Oh... Yeah, it definitely will, huh?
Satyr absorbs Medusa's scathing reprimand, and she looks down at her feet.
But then, just as quickly, she's back to her old bubbly self.
Satyr: Then how about this! What if we did a parade of hopping jiangshi! We'll still look kinda scary, I guess, but at least we'd look cute too!
Satyr: Help me out, Meddy!
Medusa: In your dreams! I'd rather hop off the ship!
Satyr: Aww, don't say that!
Medusa: Go find some other patsy! And stop hugging me!
Satyr: Pretty please?
Nezha: Heh... This is quite the fun holiday.
Baal: As long as Satyr leaves me out of this...
Although Halloween has yet to arrive, the primal pals—perhaps some more than others—are already enjoying the traditions it brings.
