How the Mighty Have Fallen

In the wake of the predecessor's possession, the crew and elder priestess deduce that the possessor is the first Divine Boar. A barrier blocks the crew from landing on the shrine-island where the first is hiding—only Divine Boars can get through. Kumbhira resolves to face the first alone.

Kumbhira and the crew decided to pay a visit to the Boar Temple after receiving word that the former Divine Boar had returned to the village.
To their surprise, the predecessor declared the restitution of her status as the Divine Boar, thus relieving Kumbhira of her duties.
But Kumbhira wasn't about to step down. The young guardian conquered the Trial of the Boar King and bested her predecessor in a direct showdown.
Having proved her worth to the village, Kumbhira was renamed the Divine Boar—this time officially—which was the predecessor's plan all along. It was a smooth transition of power.
Or it would have been, had a glowing apparition not erupted from the boar shrine and possessed the predecessor.
With one smash of her fist, the possessed woman easily punched out a sizable chunk of the island and vanished.
The crew make their way back to the village while helping the panicking crowd to evacuate.
The elder priestess nods along as she listens to Kumbhira recount her conversation with the first Divine Boar.
Elder Priestess: The boar shrine was erected as a symbol of stability by the first Divine Boar.
Elder Priestess: After his passing, his soul was said to have been enshrined within its confines.
Kumbhira: We're not the only ones with a memorial for the dead. The temples of the other generals also have their own tombs.
Elder Priestess: You are correct. As such, I have heard whisperings about the other shrines...
Elder Priestess: That the restless souls of the impossibly powerful first keepers will, at times, attempt to possess a year spirit.
That's all it takes for the crew to put two and two together.
Vyrn: You're sayin' the predecessor's bein' controlled by the soul of the first Divine Boar?
Elder Priestess: It's very likely. If it is him, he wields the power to rend the entire island asunder.
Elder Priestess: Perhaps he values the shrine and doesn't want it destroyed in the process.
Kumbhira: ...
Former Divine Boar: You know about our ultimate predecessor, the first Divine Boar, don't you?
Kumbhira: Yeah. He was a legend who saved the world countless times and was beloved by one and all ...
Former Divine Boar: The first Divine Boar would always lead the charge, clearing a path for those who followed behind. Other boars since have done the same; we're his legacy.
Former Divine Boar: And now the torch has been officially passed to you. I'm confident you'll surpass even the first Divine Boar!
Kumbhira: I don't get it though... The first doesn't sound like someone who'd ever hurt the village...
Elder Priestess: I agree. By all accounts, he was adored by everyone, and a hero to the people.
Vyrn: Then somethin' has to be gumming up the works, right? Kinda hard to believe someone that strong could get tricked though...
Lyria shivers.
Lyria: Kumbhira said that person wants to take her away...
First Divine Boar: I need time to get used to this new form, but when I do... I will come for my rightful vessel. I will come for you.
First Divine Boar: Hehehe! Don't run too far, Kumbhira!
Kumbhira: Why is he targeting me?
Vyrn: Your guess is as good as mine, but it ain't gonna be pretty if the village gets mixed up in all this. We need a plan...
Kumbhira: Yeah...
Kumbhira looks at the village while trying to gather her thoughts.
Kumbhira's Sister: Sob... What's gonna happen to the predecessor and our village?
Kumbhira's Brother: Don't cry! Everything'll work out okay!
Everywhere she looks, she sees huddled masses talking in subdued voices.
Kumbhira: ...
Kumbhira: (If only I were stronger...)
Kumbhira makes up her mind then and there.
Kumbhira: (Captain). Let's go to the shrine-island.
The Grandcypher swings beneath the island proper and flies toward a smaller, perfectly round patch of land.
Kumbhira: The first keeper said he needed time to get used to the predecessor's body.
Vyrn: If we're gonna smack him good, now's the only time to do it!
Their ship finally gets close enough to hover above the surface.
But every attempt to set down on the ground ends in failure.
Lyria: What's going on? It's like we keep bumping into an invisible wall...
Kumbhira: This is the same barrier that protects the holy cavern!
Kumbhira: Looks like only Divine Boars can set foot on the island.
Vyrn: Darn it! Okay, let's retreat for now. We'll just have to figure out another way to face him together.
Kumbhira: ...
Kumbhira: No. I'm going in.
Lyria: What? Think about what you're saying, Kumbhira!
  1. It's too dangerous.

Choose: It's too dangerous.

Vyrn: (Captain)'s right! That's like practically walkin' into a trap.
But no amount of objection can convince Kumbhira to change her mind.
Kumbhira: I have a duty to put an end to the first's madness and rescue my predecessor.
Kumbhira: To lead the charge and clear a path for those who follow—I inherited that will!
Kumbhira: I've always been playing catch-up to my predecessor... Now it's my turn to take center stage!
Vyrn: Kumboara...
Kumbhira: The fact that he's using this barrier to buy himself time proves that it's now or never.
Kumbhira: Please, (Captain). Let me handle this.
  1. Sigh... All right.
  2. You'd better come back in one piece.

Choose: Sigh... All right.
Choose: You'd better come back in one piece.

Kumbhira: Thanks!
Kumbhira flashes a reassuring smile, and then leaps off the ship's deck.
Her friends pray for her safety as they watch her descend.
After hurtling through the air for some time, the guardian skillfully lands on the ground.
She searches the forest but finds no trace of the enemy.
Kumbhira: That just leaves the cavern beneath the shrine...
Spirit Beast: You must flee, Divine Boar.
Kumbhira: ...!
The sudden emergence of a giant creature surprises Kumbhira.
Kumbhira: You're the spirit beast from the trial!
Kumbhira: How did you leave the cavern? And I didn't know you could talk...
Spirit Beast: The barrier now extends beyond the cavern, thus granting me greater freedom. My own abilities have grown in proportion to its size.
Spirit Beast: Speech is a simple trick. I am, after all, a familiar of the magnificent first Divine Boar.
Kumbhira: He summoned you? Then are you here to capture me?
Spirit Beast: Suspend your vigilance. On the contrary, I am here to rescue you.
Kumbhira: Huh?
Spirit Beast: Despite still being incomplete, he has already acclimated to his new vessel.
Spirit Beast: The window for victory has been shut. If you value your life, you should flee to the ends of the skies.
Spirit Beast: Come. Hop on my back. I shall carry you to the main island if you'll allow me to—
???: Hrraaah!
Spirit Beast: Guh!
The predecessor, under the control of the first Divine Boar, bursts forth from the cavern and dissipates the spirit beast with a swift kick.
Kumbhira: ...!
You destroyed your own familiar?
First Divine Boar: A familiar that bears a grudge against his own master can hardly be called a familiar.
First Divine Boar: Hehehe... I knew you would come, Divine Boar Kumbhira.
First Divine Boar: Relinquish your corporeal flesh to me.
Kumbhira: ...!
The first Divine Boar sneers at Kumbhira, never taking his eyes off his prey.
Kumbhira glares right back. She knows full-well that she's not looking at the predecessor she once knew.

How the Mighty Have Fallen: Scene 2

Kumbhira is no match for the first Divine Boar. The first reveals that after his death, he gave each successive Divine Boar blessed might in order to further develop his strength, bringing him closer to obtaining ultimate power. He didn't grant Kumbhira this might at the risk of making her less of a perfect vessel. Distraught that the boars have been exploited, Kumbhira gives in to despair.

Two adversaries stare each other down outside the shrine.
Kumbhira can contain her anger no longer.
Kumbhira: You were supposed to be the model all Divine Boars strived to be. What happened to you?
First Divine Boar: And why should I answer that?
Kumbhira: Fine... But your reign of terror stops here. Release her right now!
First Divine Boar: Tsk, tsk. Let's clear up a few misconceptions.
First Divine Boar: Hmph!
Kumbhira: ...!
The first Divine Boar discharges a bloodthirsty aura that's so devastating, it forces Kumbhira to her knees.
Kumbhira: (What... is this!)
She trembles at the staggering difference in power, much to the delight of her opponent.
First Divine Boar: Hehehe... Pitiful. Those without power are absolutely pitiful.
First Divine Boar: You don't have a choice. You will surrender your body to me.
First Divine Boar: Don't even think about scratching up that vessel. I need it in pristine condition.
Kumbhira: You won't take control of me!
Kumbhira: Haaaah!
First Divine Boar: You're not listening.
First Divine Boar: Grrraah!
Kumbhira: Ugh!
The first Divine Boar hits Kumbhira with a knifehand strike, driving her straight into the ground.
He looks at his wrist in disgust, which has become mangled from the force of the blow.
First Divine Boar: Look at this mess... Not a drop of my strength flows through this worthless container.
Kumbhira: She is not worthless!
Kumbhira: She's the strongest boar... in history!
First Divine Boar: Why? Because of the blessed might?
First Divine Boar: Hahaha! Oh, that's rich!
He finally stops laughing long enough to address Kumbhira with scorn.
First Divine Boar: And I'll tell you why. You see, blessed might is mine to give.
Kumbhira: What?
First Divine Boar: Very well. I'll let you in on a little secret as a courtesy.
The first Divine Boar is clearly enjoying himself.
First Divine Boar: My only purpose is to return to the living world wielding ultimate power. Power I couldn't achieve in my lifetime.
Kumbhira: Ultimate... power?
First Divine Boar: That's right. I was the strongest of the Divine Generals, but that isn't enough.
First Divine Boar: Forging strength means nothing without a physical body.
First Divine Boar: That's where the successive line of Divine Boars comes in.
Kumbhira: ...!
First Divine Boar: Each boar would receive my power and develop it in my stead.
First Divine Boar: That power is what you call blessed might. A little too on the nose for my taste.
Kumbhira: That can't be true...
First Divine Boar: After that strength has been sown and grown for long enough, it's time to reap.
First Divine Boar: The weakening you all thought was normal was actually me harvesting my rightful prize. You didn't suspect a thing.
Kumbhira: You're a liar! If that's true, then the Divine Boars were... We all were...
First Divine Boar: Pastures to raise my precious strength, and nothing more.
First Divine Boar: You fools actually believed you were on par with the gods! You even took pride in working for the sake of others!
First Divine Boar: Ahahaha! I can't stop laughing at the absurdity of it all!
Kumbhira: ...!
Kumbhira clenches her fists so tightly that her nails draw blood from her palms.
First Divine Boar: Of course, growing my strength was simple. The issue was finding a suitable container for my soul.
First Divine Boar: The vessel has to be a worthy boar with a disposition strong enough to endure my power.
First Divine Boar: I waited for decades... Centuries...
First Divine Boar: Kumbhira... You are that perfect vessel.
Kumbhira: ...!
First Divine Boar: Ever since you were a child, you were haunted by your inability to obtain blessed might.
First Divine Boar: You suffered and toiled to no avail, and the reason why is very simple.
First Divine Boar: It's because I wouldn't give it to you. I didn't want to risk tampering with my vessel's temperament.
Kumbhira: No! I don't believe you!
First Divine Boar: Reality isn't fair, I'm afraid.
Kumbhira: This is ridiculous! Blessed might is the strength that we're all proud of!
Kumbhira: I won't let you turn it into a farce! I won't!
Kumbhira covers her face and shakes her head like a child refusing to listen.
First Divine Boar: Do not fear. Your hard work won't go unrewarded.
First Divine Boar: You should thank your dear predecessor for pushing you to take the Trial of the Boar King.
First Divine Boar: That saved me a lot of time, considering it's the only occasion I can get to appraise prospective boars.
First Divine Boar: Congratulations on maturing into a fine vessel. I acknowledge your talents!
Kumbhira: No... No!
First Divine Boar: The strong have always commanded respect in this world. If you want to hate someone, then hate yourself for not being strong enough to overcome.
Kumbhira: ...
Kumbhira stares off into the distance as the first Divine Boar sighs.
He carefully lifts her up by the neck.
Kumbhira: ...!
First Divine Boar: You used to cry at my shrine when you were a child. Oh, how you desperately prayed.
First Divine Boar: When you wailed for power, did I not answer?
First Divine Boar: "Strength will come to you in due time."
First Divine Boar: Hahaha! Rejoice! Your wish is my command!
Kumbhira: ...!
Kumbhira's body goes limp. She can only muster tears.
In an instant, her world turns dark, possibly forever.

How the Mighty Have Fallen: Scene 3

Shouts of support coming from the crew and villagers aboard the Grandcypher rescue Kumbhira from the first Divine Boar's possession. Their heartfelt encouragement reignites her fire to protect her loved ones as the Divine Boar, and she defeats the first in combat.

In a dense forest stands an austere shrine. A young girl prays fervently in front of it.
Young Kumbhira: Please, bestow upon me the blessed might of the Divine Boar.
Young Kumbhira: Please give me the power to overcome any obstacle!
Young Kumbhira: Grant me the strength to destroy injustices!
Mysterious Voice: I shall grant your wish.
Young Kumbhira: ...!
Mysterious Voice: Accept this light, and you shall discover the power you seek.
Young Kumbhira: Yes! Thank you, thank you!
Kumbhira weeps with joy and reaches for the light.
  1. Don't touch it!

Choose: Don't touch it!

Young Kumbhira: ...!
She hears a voice that stops her right before her fingers are about to graze the glow.
Lyria: You don't need that! You can break down walls without it, remember?
Vyrn: Yeah! Who completed her duties and crushed the Boar King's trial on her own? You did!
Young Kumbhira: Who's talking to me?
Pulling her hand back, she turns around.
But no one's there. Yet the voices ring loud and clear.
Elder Priestess: Lady Kumbhira, you already know which path to take!
Kumbhira's Sister: You can do anything, Sis!
Kumbhira's Brother: Come back to us, Sis!
Young Kumbhira: ...!
Her surroundings begin to warp, and even her own appearance shifts with the distortion.
Kumbhira: I can hear them...
Mysterious Voice: Do not answer their siren songs! What can you possibly change without power?
Kumbhira: ...
Once again, Kumbhira takes a long, hard look at the floating light.
Kumbhira: I'm so jealous of this radiance. Just looking at it makes my head spin.
Kumbhira: But I know in my heart that I've found something far more dazzling.
Kumbhira: ...!
The young guardian slips out from the first's grasps.
First Divine Boar: Impossible! How did you escape from my spell!
Vyrn: Hey, Kumboara! Looks like ya heard us!
She looks up and spots the Grandcypher hovering overhead.
In addition to the crew, a large group of people are leaning over the deck's railing to shout encouragement at her—it's the villagers.
Kumbhira: Thank you, everyone. You all made me remember what's most important.
First Divine Boar: This is their fault! I don't understand... The barrier should have blocked out their voices—
First Divine Boar: No! This blood I smell! The traces of the Divine Boar's heritage among the gathered villagers was enough to impede the barrier!
He glares at the airship with utter disdain.
First Divine Boar: No mercy for the weak!
Kumbhira: You're not going anywhere!
Kumbhira grabs both of his legs to stop him from attacking the Grandcypher.
First Divine Boar: Unhand me!
Kumbhira: ...
She keeps a firm hold despite leaving herself defenseless to his brutal retaliation.
First Divine Boar: Resistance is futile! You're only putting my vessel to waste!
Kumbhira: I'm not... letting go! I will... stop you!
First Divine Boar: Who are you trying to fool? You are obviously no match for me.
Kumbhira: I know! I'm just a weakling who can't do anything! I'm the worst Divine Boar there ever was!
Kumbhira: But I never gave up, and no one gave up on me!
Kumbhira: I don't need your light, because the one I have shines a million times brighter!
First Divine Boar: You stupid girl! You think you can use your weakness as a crutch?
Kumbhira: Guh!
Kumbhira is violently flung off. She crashes hard into the ground, but she's back on her feet in an instant, ready to fight again.
Kumbhira: I'll never back down. I have to protect everyone!
Kumbhira: That's the path I've chosen as Divine Boar Kumbhira!
  1. You got this, Kumbhira!

Choose: You got this, Kumbhira!

The Divine Boar raises Recker high into the air in acknowledgement of her compatriot.
Suddenly a cascade of golden light rains down from the sky and wraps around Kumbhira.
Kumbhira: This light... I can feel everyone's warmth!
First Divine Boar: No! Could that glimmer of gold be—
Kumbhira: My focus is clear!
Kumbhira: Taaah!
First Divine Boar: Gargh!
First Divine Boar: Impossible! How can a weakling like you wield such power!
First Divine Boar: Enough! I'll find another vessel and destroy you instead!
Kumbhira: ...
Kumbhira easily halts the first general's potent charge with Recker.
First Divine Boar: Ergh!
Kumbhira: This ends now!
First Divine Boar: I command you to stop!
Kumbhira: Haaaah!
Kumbhira: Full-Boar Drive!
Kumbhira unleashes an attack so fierce that the surrounding trees are uprooted from the resulting shockwave. The first falls into a silent heap.
Sunlight bathes the victor in comforting warmth, as if to congratulate her on a well-fought battle.

How the Mighty Have Fallen: Scene 4

The first Divine Boar regains his senses after being defeated by Kumbhira. He remembers how he received a power called devoted might when he first defended his village, born from his desire to protect, and now Kumbhira has that power. He vows to safeguard the villagers as he once did. After helping to rebuild the village, the crew depart, and Kumbhira expresses her thanks to (Captain).

Kumbhira cautiously approaches her fallen enemy.
Kumbhira: ...
First Divine Boar: Rest easy. I don't have the strength to fight.
First Divine Boar: Once my consciousness slips away, the vessel's soul will return.
Kumbhira: I see. That's good to know.
Kumbhira breathes a sigh of relief, though she's still on guard.
She glances at her right hand, which is clad in golden light.
Kumbhira: (According to the books I've read, this power that's welling inside me feels like blessed might, but...)
First Divine Boar: What you're experiencing is called devoted might. The power I grant to Divine Boars is a mere imitation.
Kumbhira: What?
First Divine Boar: I don't have any right to ask this of you, but will you listen to what I have to say?
A sort of calm washes over the first, as if a demon has been exorcised.
Sensing no malice in his words, Kumbhira nods.
First Divine Boar: Ah, it was such a long time ago when the invaders from another realm laid siege to my small village.
First Divine Boar: A single warrior stood against the onslaught of death.
Warrior: Huff... Pant... Who are these people!
First Divine Boar: The invaders were absurdly powerful. One by one, his comrades were laid to rest on the battlefield.
First Divine Boar: But he did not relent. His soul burned with the urge to protect his people, and so he clashed with the invaders time and time again.
First Divine Boar: The villagers believed in him. Their support never wavered.
First Divine Boar: Perhaps it was their faith that manifested as devoted might—a golden power used to safeguard his loved ones.
Kumbhira: I see...
First Divine Boar: Using this power, the warrior drove off the invaders and was hailed as a hero. Together with fellow warriors of his ilk, they established twelve temples.
First Divine Boar: Adopting the title of the Divine Boar, he continued to oppose trespassers to the Sky Realm.
First Divine Boar: No longer was he a simple warrior from a tiny village. He trained obsessively in pursuit of ultimate power.
First Divine Boar: Eventually he was vanquished by time. Yet even in death, his craving for strength lingered.
First Divine Boar: Power was everything; nothing else mattered. He had lost sight of his purpose.
First Divine Boar: Unable to remember why he sought power in the first place, it heralded his descent into antipathy.
The first chuckles.
First Divine Boar: Your blast jarred my memories free. I now remember why I granted others my power.
First Divine Boar: I apologize for the wretch you see before you. I've hurt the very people I swore to protect...
The first Divine Boar closes his eyes, drowning in a sea of regret.
First Divine Boar: You must destroy the shrine and send off this warrior's pitiful soul.
Kumbhira: ...
Kumbhira: I don't think I can do that.
First Divine Boar: ...!
Kumbhira: It's true you lost sight of your purpose, but now you've found it again, haven't you?
Kumbhira: That's good enough for me. I made a lot of mistakes too. I didn't know what I was doing, but I still managed to find my way to where I stand.
Kumbhira: I want you to protect the village as you are. As someone who understands true strength.
First Divine Boar: How can you even suggest that? After the crimes I perpetrated against the village—
Spirit Beast: What is done cannot be undone, but that doesn't change the fact that you were once this village's hero.
First Divine Boar: ...!
The giant beast appears from out of nowhere and kneels beside the first.
Spirit Beast: I recognize those kind eyes. My old master has returned at last.
Spirit Beast: Let's support the villagers. It's not too late to correct your wrongs.
First Divine Boar: ...
He remains silent for a while.
First Divine Boar: Your kind heart is the definition of true strength, Kumbhira.
First Divine Boar: Thank you... I pledge to protect the village with my everything.
A light shoots out of the predecessor's body and returns to the shrine.
It takes a bit of time, but things eventually return to normal.
The day has come for (Captain) and company to depart, and the whole village gathers at the port.
Lyria: Thank you for coming to say goodbye to us, everyone.
Elder Priestess: It's the least we can do to express our gratitude. You have done a great deal for our humble village.
Former Divine Boar: She's right, you know! It was nice having extra hands around to help rebuild our home, not to mention feeding me while I was stuck in bed!
Kumbhira: I'm glad to see you back on your feet again. You were out of it for a while... Are you sure it's okay to be walking around already?
Former Divine Boar: Pfft, this is nothing! The first Divine Boar threw some power my way, so I'm ready to hit the beach!
Kumbhira: If you say so. Just try not to go ham out there, okay?
Former Divine Boar: I'm sorry, did you just tell me not to go ham? Talk about being preachy. I heard you used some crazy strength to patch up the hole in the island. What's up with that?
Vyrn: Actually, the Grandcypher pushed the shrine-island up from the bottom and then Kumboara used her devoted might to put it back in place.
Lyria: Don't worry! Kumbhira didn't hurt herself! She lifted it up like it was a pebble!
Former Divine Boar: Whoa, for realsies? You go, Kumbhira!
Kumbhira: I mean, the ship did most of the heavy stuff, and I had the first's power too, so it was a group effort.
Former Divine Boar: C'mon, girl! Why can't you take more credit? But I guess that's what makes you so lovable.
Former Divine Boar: It's so hard not to worry about my protege. How are you ever going to find a lover if you don't get your feelings out there?
Kumbhira: Wh-what does that have to do with anything!
Her predecessor grins and drapes an arm around the priestess's shoulder.
Former Divine Boar: In any case, you just leave the village to us and have a blast on your journey!
Elder Priestess: Even the village elder has come around. Do not fret over our affairs. Go out and live your life.
Kumbhira: Thanks, everyone. The next time I come back, I'll be even more awesome.
The villagers all nod and cheer.
Kumbhira: Bye, everyone! See you later!
Kumbhira joins the crew on the deck, and they all wave farewell to the hometown crowd.
Eventually the villagers become too small to see, and then the island itself is swallowed up by the vast, blue sky.
Kumbhira: This reminds me of the day I first left the island.
Kumbhira: I was on a strange ship with people I barely knew, watching the mountain I'd climbed since I was a kid vanish into the horizon.
Kumbhira: But now the Grandcypher is like my home away from home.
Kumbhira lovingly strokes the ship's railing, and then faces her captain.
Kumbhira: The Grandcypher arrived just as the first was about to possess me.
Kumbhira: I don't know how to thank you guys. If you hadn't brought everyone, I wouldn't be standing here right now.
Kumbhira: Actually, it goes deeper than that. If I hadn't met you and the others, and left the island, I wouldn't be me.
Kumbhira pins her hair down from blowing in the wind and steps closer to (Captain).
Kumbhira: I'm not saying this because my predecessor egged me on, but I want to get something off my chest.
Kumbhira: I... I'm really glad I left the island with you.
Kumbhira: It's thanks to making cherished friends, and especially you, that I gained the freedom to find myself.
Piglets: Squee-squee!
Three little piglets pop out to celebrate Kumbhira's feelings.
Kumbhira: Ahaha... Yeah, I'd say I'm pretty happy.
  1. Me too.

Choose: Me too.

Kumbhira: Huh?
(Captain) confesses that every day spent journeying with Kumbhira is an absolute joy.
Kumbhira: S-so are you saying, like... I'm the one person in the skies that makes you the happiest?
Her cheeks begin to flush red.
Kumbhira: Come on, (Captain). Let's keep the good times rolling for a long, long time.
Unlike Kumbhira who's trying to keep a composed smile, her piglets are hopping all over the place with delight.
As the Grandcypher flies through calm skies, Kumbhira and (Captain) spoil the piglets with belly rubs while sharing a blissful laugh.
