Bitter Lamentation

When (Captain) and company stop at a village for supplies, Lucius decides to pass the day by teaching the village's children how to wield the sword. The lesson is interrupted, however, by the abrupt appearance of a gravely injured Feena. Feena explains she was hurt during a goblin-hunting mission in the Menean Empire and that Goblin Mage was taken. The crew rushes to the island and comes across the grim aftermath of a goblin attack. Among the wounded villagers is the young boy Lucius had first taught, but the crew is unable to help him.

Lucius (Fire) not in crew

Despite bearing a long-standing thirst for revenge, Lucius and Teena swore to turn over a new leaf and live for a different purpose.
However, Lucius remained conflicted. Unlike Teena, who could move forward, he was unable let go completely.
For a time, he left the crew and worked as an agent to cover living expenses, debating with himself all the while.
He met a war orphan along the way. The child wished to become stronger in order to protect his younger sister.
Young Boy: Um... Can ya teach me how to use a sword?
Lucius: I don't teach cowards.
Young Boy: I ain't a coward! I need to know so I can protect my sister!
Seeing his younger self in the child, Lucius began to train him in the sword.
Afterward, Lucius saved the child and his sister, Miya, from potential disaster.
Young Boy: I wouldn't have been able to keep Miya safe if I hadn't met you.
Young Boy: I'll always be thankful to ya!
Young Boy: You've been nice to me since we first met. I'm gonna be a nice guy like you when I grow up!
Lucius: Humph. I'm not a nice person. Trust me.
Lucius experienced for the first time what it was like to teach children how to wield the sword.
From there he believed he had found a new path to tread.
(Captain) and the crew stop by a village to replenish their supplies.
While they wait for business to be handled, Lucius spends his free time teaching the children there how to fight with a sword.
Lucius: Wow, is that all you've got? You really think you can protect anybody you care about at this rate?
Pupil 1: Argh! I can keep going!
Pupil 1: Hyaah, hyaah! Raaah!
Lucius: Heh, good. Keep it up and maybe you'll defeat me one day!
Teena: Hehe, it looks like you're getting used to being a teacher.
Lucius: Don't call me that. I'm not someone who's suitable to become anything like a teacher.
Pupil 2: We call him our master instead!
Teena: A master, huh? I guess that's probably more appropriate for a rough guy like him.
Pupil 2: Right?
Lucius: Less talking, more training. If you've got the energy to flap your mouth, then maybe I need to have you do more practice swings.
Pupil 2: M-Master! Please, anything but that!
Lucius: Heh.
Teena: (Hehe, wow... I'm still not used to seeing him make that kind of expression...)
Teena happily laughs as she enjoys the sun's rays and watches Lucius guide his pupils.
Lyria's Voice: Feena! A-are you okay?
Teena: ...?
At Lyria's panicked question, Teena and Lucius immediately turn around to see what the commotion is.
They are greeted by the sight of a gravely wounded and stumbling Feena.
Feena: Pant... Wheeze... Sorry for the ruckus...
Teena: Ruckus? Who cares about that! (Captain), we've got to get her to a doctor!
Feena: I'm fine, I'm fiiine! This is nothing.
Vyrn: Nothing? Who're you trying to kid here?
Before (Captain) and Teena can grab her, Feena holds her hands up and looks pointedly at Lucius.
Feena: I'm just so popular, you know? Everyone wants me to help them out, so I took a job on a nearby island to exterminate some monsters.
Feena: Urgh... Of course, then I ran into a goblin army.
Lucius: A what?
Feena: They thought I was easy pickings, but no way was a goblin hunter like me gonna come quietly!
Feena: And I did pretty well taking them down.
Feena: Ahaha... But then I maaaybe let my guard down just a teensy bit...
Feena: Goblin Mage was with me... and now they have her...
The tears in Feena's eyes are enough to convey the immense pain she's in, both physically and emotionally.
Lucius: Leave her to me. I will eliminate every last one of those fiends.
Feena: I'm not leavin' her to anybody! I'm coming with you, and I'm gonna save her!
Lucius: You'll only get in the way. Just stay here and focus on attending to your wounds.
Feena: ...
Lucius: I promise. I will save your precious friend and bring her back to you.
Feena: Thank you. But... be careful. Something about the goblins was different than usual.
Feena: They seemed smarter than before... Their attacks were organized, almost like an army under a commander...
At Feena's worried expression, (Captain) places a calming hand on her shoulder.
  1. That grim look isn't like you.
  2. You okay? Those wounds look painful.

Choose: That grim look isn't like you.

Vyrn: You said it! Confidence and cheer is what makes the Feena we know and love!
Feena: Ha... haha... Nobody's gonna mention my mad skills too?
Feena: You know what though? You're right! (Captain)! Everyone! I'm counting on you guys to save Goblin Mage!
Lyria: Of course!
Teena: Okay! Off to the doctor's with you now!
Teena: I swear, between worrying about you and Lucius, I'm losing years off my life...
Feena: Hahaha... Sooorry...

Choose: You okay? Those wounds look painful.

Feena: Pssh, it's just a flesh wound!
Feena attempts to proudly show as much, but slowly collapses to the ground instead.
Lyria: Feena!
Feena: Ouchies...
Teena: Stop pushing yourself! You're going straight to the doctor's this instant!
Feena: Okaaay...

(Captain) and Teena carry Feena off, leaving Lucius to seethe in hatred alone.
Lucius: (I swear I'll take the heads of every last one of those fiends.)
With the pressure building, the crew hurries to save Goblin Mage and travels to a small island in the Menean Empire.
When (Captain) and the crew arrive on the island, they are met with an appalling sight.
Villagers are sprawled across the ground, wounds covering their bodies.
Rackam: Hey, you there! What in the skies happened here?
Wounded Man: Wheeze... Gasp... The goblins came and attacked. We just barely got away with our lives...
Lucius: Tch.
Teena: Lucius, don't go off by yourself. We have to help these people first.
Lucius: Yeah, I know.
As the crew attends to the injured villagers, a girl runs up to Lucius and tugs at his sleeve.
???: M-Master... Hey, Master...
Lucius: ...?
Tears pour down the girl's cheeks. Lucius kneels down and wipes them away with his thumbs.
Lucius: Did you just call me "master"? I don't think I've ever taught here before...
???: ...
Lucius: ...!
Young Boy: Heh heh. I'll teach Auntie a lesson if she's mean to us. There's nothing to worry about!
Young Boy's Sister: Yeah, because you're with me.
Lucius: That's right... You two went to stay with your relatives... Your name is Miya, right?
Young Boy's Sister: Yeah, hiccup... Um... Brother told me to run...
Young Boy's Sister: He said there were bad guys coming...
Lucius: Does that mean... your brother is still in the village?
Young Boy's Sister: Yeah...
Lucius: ...
Lucius abruptly stands, but he is stopped by another voice.
Wounded Man: Skyfarer, it's too late... The village is already overrun with goblins... Sob...
Lucius: I don't care. I'm going.
Young Boy's Sister: I'm going too.
Teena: Miya, why don't you stay here with us?
Young Boy's Sister: Nuh-uh. I'm going with Master to find my brother.
Lucius: Let's go then, Miya.
Young Boy's Sister: Okay!
Teena: Lucius, no!
Lucius: Miya has a right to know what's happened, no matter what we might find there.
Teena: ...
The scene that awaits the crew in the village is grisly enough to take away their breath.
Rackam: This is horrible...
Lucius: ...
Young Boy's Sister: Brother! Where are you!
Lyria: (Captain)! Let's split up and look for Miya's brother!
After splitting up and searching for some time, they finally find a boy trapped beneath rubble.
Lucius: Hey, hang in there!
Young Boy's Sister: Brother... Hey, Brother?
Young Boy: Gasp... Pant... Miya, I'm so glad you're okay...
Young Boy's Sister: Uh-huh...
Lucius: You did well, kid.
Young Boy: Huh? M-Master? Why... are you here?
Lucius: You distracted the goblins so your sister could escape, didn't you?
Young Boy: Hehehe... Ugh...
Young Boy's Sister: Brother? Where does it hurt? Here, I'll hold your hand so you feel better!
The other onlookers know at a glance that the boy's wounds are fatal.
Lucius: If only I had never taught you how to wield a sword...
Young Boy: What are you talking about, Master? Without ya, I would've never been able to protect Miya.
Young Boy: So Master... Thank you.
Lucius: You're... welcome.
Young Boy's Sister: Brother? Hey... Pain, pain, go away!
Young Boy: Miya... Listen, okay? Argh... You... You gotta keep on smiling and living, okay? No matter what happens...
Young Boy's Sister: Okay, I'll keep smiling and living with you—
Young Boy: ...
Young Boy's Sister: Huh? Brother? Does it still hurt somewhere?
Young Boy's Sister: Pain, pain... go away... Pain, pain, go... Sob... Brother... Brother!
Lucius: ...
Lucius wraps the girl in a tight hug. He keeps his own sorrow tightly locked away.
Lucius: Miya... You need to keep on laughing and smiling, enough to make up for your brother's share! Got that, Miya?
Young Boy's Sister: Waahhh!
Teena: Ah...
Young Teena: Waahhh! Lucius, I'm scared!
Young Lucius: It's okay. You'll be fine, Teena. Mom too! I'll protect you both!
A distressing memory of Teena's surfaces at the sight of Miya desperately trying to wake her brother up.
Teena: Gasp...
Lyria: Teena?
Teena: Sorry. It's nothing, just some old memories...
Lucius: (Teena...)
Worried for his sister, Lucius vows to keep Teena safe from this new conflict with the goblins.
