Taking What Is Offered
Lancelot invites (Captain), Lyria, and Vyrn to Feendrache for Halloween, where they find his office in a mess due to a package he received from his parents while Vane was away. As the crew helps him clean up, he finds a letter from his mother and stops to read it.
Lancelot: (Captain), Vyrn, Lyria! Thank you for coming!
Some time before Feendrache and Lancelot's home village of Nimue was attacked by dragons, the nation was getting ready to celebrate a peaceful Halloween.
Hoping to spend Halloween together, the crew members have accepted an invitation from the knight captain.
Lyria: Lancelot! It's good to... see you?
Vyrn: Hey, what's wrong with this room? The floor's so covered in stuff that ya can't even walk on it!
However, they find themselves shocked upon walking into his office.
All kinds of objects are haphazardly scattered throughout the room.
Lancelot: Hey, it's not that bad! But I guess it is pretty messy, I'm sorry about that.
Lancelot: I just received a package from my parents. I had only asked for them to send a couple of books, but it seems they included a bunch of other things...
Vyrn: Haha, so ya couldn't be bothered organizing things as ya took stock of it all, huh?
Lyria: They sure sent you a lot, didn't they? Clothes, books, and even food. And even some paperwork... Wait, paperwork?
Lancelot: Oh, so that's where it went! I've been looking for that!
Vyrn: Geez, I guess we'll help ya out... There's no way we can enjoy the festivities knowing we've left this catastrophe behind.
- How bothersome...
- What're we gonna do with you, Lancey?
Choose: How bothersome...Lancelot: Urgh... Don't be so mad, (Captain)...
Vyrn: Well, no point complaining! Come on, stop being glum and start cleaning this place up!
Choose: What're we gonna do with you, Lancey?Lancelot: Haha... I can't count how many times Vane has said that to me.
Lyria: Hehe, I can imagine it right now! Okay, let's get to cleaning!
Continue 1Lancelot: Thanks for the help. Oh right, the cake and pie they sent should be somewhere around—
Lyria: Cake and pie! Now that you mention it, something really smells nice...
Lancelot: My mother and her neighbor, Auntie Adele, baked them. They're really good, so let's—
Vyrn: Hey! Cleaning comes first!
Lyria: Right!
Lancelot: We're on it!
As everyone cleans Lancelot's office, he happens to find an envelope wedged in between two objects.
Lancelot: This is...
Curious, he stops cleaning and pulls out the letter to read it.
Elaine: "Long time no see, Lancelot. How have you been? Neither you nor Vane have gotten sick, right?"
Elaine: "I've sent the books you asked for, along with a lot of other stuff I couldn't stop myself from adding."
Lancelot: (You really never change, Mother... Still, thank you.)
Elaine: "I've included vegetables, seasoning, and some food that keeps well, so please pass all that to Vane."
Elaine: "There are plenty of snacks too, so share with him. No fighting over them!"
Lancelot: (Mother, how old do you think we are?)
Elaine: "Oh, and your father wants to hear about what you two have been up to lately."
Elaine: "The village children beg him for stories about you daily, it seems."
Elaine: "Send him a letter, even if you don't have any interesting stories to share. I'm sure he'll love it."
Lancelot: (Father used to spend so much time teaching Vane and me and telling us stories, didn't he...)
Ban: Right, what kind of story should I tell you today?
Young Lancelot: I want to hear about the hero of the south!
Young Vane: Uhm, uh... Me too!
Ban: Hmm... I was thinking about telling you about the ninjas of the east, but...
Ban: Haha, I guess you two really love knights and heroes, huh?
Young Lancelot: Ninjas! I wanna hear about ninjas too!
Young Lancelot: Oh yeah, the east has stories about cats that turn into monsters too, right?
Young Vane: What? A monster?
Ban: Would you prefer a different story, Vane?
Young Vane: N-no! I'm with Lancey so I'll be okay! Tell us the story!
Ban: You've got it. Right then, first I'll tell you about the hero of the south...
Lancelot: (I bet he's still telling stories to kids, just like back then...)
Ban: Now, what do you want to hear today?
Ban: I could tell you about the hero and princess of the south, the monsters of Halloween, the legendary magician of the west...
Ban: Or, how about the Order of the White Dragons?
Lancelot: ...
Vyrn: Hey, why's Lancelot so quiet?
(Captain) and Lyria look up to see Lancelot gazing at the letter with a smile on his face.
Lyria: That must be from his mother. He looks so happy, hehe...
Vyrn: Well, I guess he's out of action. We'll have to finish up ourselves.
Lancelot: Hm? Oh, I'm sorry! I got distracted!
Lancelot: I'll make up for it, so leave some for me!
Vyrn: Some of what, the mess?
Vyrn: Wow, this apple pie your mom baked is so crispy and delicious!
Lancelot: Haha, I'm glad to hear it!
Lancelot: Have as much as you want, everyone. It's only thanks to you all that this room is so clean now.
Lyria: The pumpkin cake is very tasty too!
Lancelot: Every fall, Vane and I would always get excited waiting for Auntie Adele to start baking those.
Lancelot: I'll have to save some for him to eat once he's back from his expedition.
Vyrn: Oh, I get it. Your office ended up like this 'cause Vane's out of town, huh?
Lancelot: Well... Haha...
Lyria: In any case, it's good that we cleaned it up before the Halloween party! You're going to be so busy patrolling.
Lancelot: Yes, I am. It will be a huge event with people coming from all over and even outside of the country, after all.
Lancelot: That said, we've meticulously planned out how we're handling security. There won't be anything to worry about—enjoy the festival to your hearts' content.
Vyrn: Yeah, you bet! Thanks for the invitation, Lancelot.
Lancelot: And thank you for coming... Oh, right. There's something I need to do before the festivities start.
Lyria: Something you need to do? For the Order of the White Dragons, you mean?
Lancelot: Yes, that's right. We're sending out teams of surveyors to update our maps of Feendrache right now.
Lancelot: One of them is about to head for an abandoned village, but it seems that monsters have started living there.
Lancelot: The surveyors always have knights guarding them, but I've decided to join them as well just in case.
Vyrn: So that's what Vane's doin' too, huh?
Lancelot: Indeed. So I'm sorry to disappear right after you've just arrived, but I'll leaving tomorrow for about two days.
- We'll go with you.
- Have a nice trip.
Choose: We'll go with you.Lancelot: You will? Well, that would certainly be reassuring...
Lyria: Of course! We might even be able to help you come back more quickly, after all!
Choose: Have a nice trip.Vyrn: I'd rather go help him than just wait! It's not like we have any other plans anyway. Does that sound good, Lancelot?
Lancelot: Of course. I'd be thrilled to have your help.
Lyria: That settles it! Let's help Lancelot finish up his work, (Captain)!
Continue 2Lancelot: I'm sorry to trouble you with this after inviting you here, but thanks for the assistance.
Lancelot cheerfully offers his appreciation, still unaware of what awaits him.
For it is not merely monsters that took up residence at the abandoned village...
A Pair from the Past
Leading the crew and a group of surveyors to an abandoned village, Lancelot rescues three cats that lead him to a shed containing a magical hat and cloak. Taking them back to the camp, the knight captain suddenly falls asleep and opens his eyes to find himself in a new outfit.
Lancelot: We're here.
The day after (Captain)'s crew joined him, Lancelot arrives at the abandoned village with the surveyors in tow.
Vyrn: It's all quiet now, but this must've been a really big village.
Lancelot: Yes. The monster presence and tendency for roads to collapse around here made this a particularly difficult area to get around.
Lancelot: That resulted in them trying to make the village self-sufficient, but in the end it didn't go well.
Lancelot: Only a few years ago, it was a lively, wonderful town...
Lyria: That's sad, but I'm glad to hear that they weren't wiped out by monsters.
Lancelot: That said, there are probably monsters here now, considering the size of this place. Be careful, every—
Just as Lancelot speaks to the group, his guess is proven correct.
Monster: Graaah!
Lancelot: ...!
That was...
- Let's go!
Choose: Let's go!Lancelot: Right!
Lancelot: Over there!
Reaching the source of the voice faster than anyone else, he finds a monster trying to intimidate a group of animals.
Monster: Grah! Grah!
White Cat 1: Meow!
Lancelot: It's preying on the cats!
Facing down the monster are three cats. Two white and scrawny ones press up against each other as a black one has its fur standing on end.
Black Cat: Hiss!
Monster: Grah!
Lancelot: Watch out!
Seeing the black cat take a step forward, Lancelot draws his swords and gracefully leaps in between the monster and its prey.
Lancelot: Hraaah!
Monster: Grack!
Lancelot: Whew... It's all right now.
White Cat 1: Meow!
Lancelot: It looks like nobody got hurt. Look at you shaking like that, you must have been so scared...
Lancelot: Do you want some water? Drink this and try to calm down a little.
Taking out his canteen and pouring some water onto a plate, Lancelot places it before the cats.
White Cat 2: Meow!
Lancelot: Hehe...
As they ravenously drink up the water, the cats let Lancelot pet them without resistance.
Lancelot: They're so docile. Are they used to being around people?
The moment of peace and quiet disappears as Lancelot's companions catch up.
Vyrn: You beat a monster! Was that the only one?
Lancelot: It was, but there might be others hiding elsewhere. We should split up and search the area.
White Cat 1: Meow!
Having finished their water, the cats cry out in response to Lancelot's suggestion.
Lancelot: Haha, I like your guts, but it's too dangerous for you to come with us. You should run along now.
However, the two white cats start happily rubbing themselves up against Lancelot's legs.
The black cat quietly sits a little ways away, monitoring the situation.
Lyria: It looks like they really like you, Lancelot!
Lancelot: Yes... Would keeping them with us until we can be sure that there aren't any other monsters here actually be the safest option?
White Cat 2: Meow, meow, meow!
As Lancelot brushes his chin and thinks, the cats cry out seeking his attention.
They walk a short distance away and turn back, as if they want to show him something.
Lyria: It looks like they're trying to get you to follow them, doesn't it?
Lancelot: Yes, it does... All right.
Lancelot quickly directs his men to search the village for danger and then turns back to the cats.
Vyrn: You're gonna follow them?
Lancelot: Since they're so used to people, they might lead me to their owner.
...
Though I'll have to be prepared for the worst.
Vyrn: R-right. Yeah, that definitely could happen...
Lancelot: What's in here?
Lancelot lets the cats lead him to a run-down building.
Though its interior is littered with boxes and clothes, there is nothing to indicate that a fight took place there.
Lancelot: What is it that you want to show me?
The cats that had been leading the group stop in front of a specific wooden box.
Its lid is missing and lying folded inside of it is a bundle old but high-quality cloth.
Lancelot: This is...
Vyrn: What'd ya find? Treasure?
Lancelot: An old cape and a hat... Is this where you two have been sleeping?
White Cat 1: Meow.
Lyria: Hehe, I guess they wanted to invite us into their home.
But suddenly...
Lancelot: ...!
For just a moment, the cape and the hat emit a bright light.
Lyria: D-did they just shine?
Lancelot: Yes, I did. I seem to sense a faint amount of magic coming from these clothes.
Vyrn: Are they dangerous?
Lancelot: No, I feel nothing that puts me off. But we should check them more closely, just in case.
Lancelot: I'm sorry, but will you let me borrow your bedding? I'll leave this cloth in its place.
White Cat 2: Mew!
Black Cat: ...
Lyria: It looks like they're okay with it. What a smart bunch of kitties!
Vyrn: Right then, let's head back to our camp!
That night, as the group members finish their meals and prepare to discuss the strange outfit...
Lancelot: ...!
What? I suddenly feel sleepy...
Lancelot: Urgh... Everyone, are you all right?
Lancelot looks around in concern and finds that (Captain)'s group has already fallen asleep.
The surveyors and knights standing guard have also all sat down or collapsed to the floor to doze off.
Lancelot: This... isn't... good...
Lancelot: ...
Hm? Where am I?
Vyrn: Huh? What's goin' on? Something seems real bright...
Lyria: Hmm? Good morning, every—
Lyria: Oh! Lancelot, that outfit!
Lancelot: What?
Lancelot: Whaaat!
A Pair from the Past: Scene 2
The crew members find themselves amidst an unfamiliar village's Halloween festivities. Though they eventually determine that there is no danger, two young boys appear and tell Lancelot that he should stay there forever. Realizing that they are the two cats that he saved, Lancelot instead suggests that they leave the abandoned village and find a new place to call home.
Lancelot: This is the outfit the cats were using as a bed, right? And this village...
Having woken up in an unfamiliar place, the group looks around in total confusion. Suddenly, a woman calls out to them.
Woman: What are you all standing there looking bewildered for?
Woman: Today's the Halloween festival, isn't it? Get on out there and have some fun!
Lancelot: Ah, excuse me! Could you let us know where—
Before Lancelot can finish asking his question, the woman disappears into the crowd.
Lyria: She left...
Lancelot: Oh well. Anyway, let's sort out what we know. First of all, where are we?
Looking around as he speaks, Lancelot notices something odd.
Lancelot: The layout of these buildings matches that abandoned village.
Lyria and Vyrn are shocked at Lancelot's statement, but (Captain), having already come to the same conclusion, nods in agreement.
Lancelot: So you noticed too, (Captain). It's hard to believe, but... it seems that we're in that same village.
Lancelot: But why...
Lancelot's train of thought is suddenly interrupted by a feline cry.
White Cat 1: Mew, mew!
Black Cat: ...
Lancelot: You three!
Lancelot: Ah, wait!
After crying out for Lancelot's attention, the two white cats disappear back into the crowd.
Standing quietly at Lancelot's feet, the black cat looks out at the direction they went.
Lancelot: Are you not going to go with them?
Black Cat: ...
Eventually, the black cat locks eyes with Lancelot and responds to his concern with a single meow.
Lancelot: ...?
Lancelot: (Odd... For some reason, I feel like I can understand what this cat is trying to tell me...)
Lancelot: ...
There's nothing for me to worry about, you say?
Black Cat: Meow.
Taking the short cry as a yes, Lancelot turns back to (Captain)'s group.
Lancelot: I don't think this place is dangerous. I don't have any proof, but... I feel like this cat told me.
Lyria: The cat did? Is that right, kitty?
Black Cat: Mew.
Lyria: Wow, it answered me! Hehe, now I feel like it's all right too.
Lancelot: Right, let's check out this village. And, just as that person earlier said, we should try to have some fun while we do it.
The group heads out into the village, which has been decorated with jack–o'–lanterns and other Halloween staples, and enjoys the festive atmosphere.
Vyrn: Man, this place sure is bustlin' with people. And there are a whole bunch of cats too.
Vyrn: Hey, that place is sellin' candy apples! We're gonna go get some!
Lancelot: Understood. Don't get lost, though.
Lancelot watches (Captain), Lyria, and Vyrn run off, then feels a strange wind suddenly blow through his hair.
Younger Boy 1: This is how lively our village used to be.
Lancelot: ...
Who are you?
Lancelot turns to face the boy, but he has already disappeared.
Vyrn's Voice: Hey, Lancelot! Don't ya want one too?
Lancelot waves at Vyrn to indicate that he does not, then feels a presence at his left.
Younger Boy 2: Everyone went away... Both the people, and the cats...
Lancelot: ...
I see. That must have been sad.
Lancelot feels no fear as the boy's words sink into his heart.
Younger Brother: All our other brothers from the litter left us too. Now there's only us two.
Lancelot: ...
Litter?
Noticing something odd about the statement, Lancelot looks to his left only to see that the boy is already gone.
Lyria: Lancelot! The village children say that they want to play with us! You should come too!
Lancelot: R-right.
Vyrn: Hm? What's up?
Lancelot: It's nothing. At least... nothing bad, I think.
Lancelot: Anyway, what do they want to play?
Lyria: A game called pumpkinhole. We take an empty jack–o'–lantern and try to—
Lancelot: Throw candies into the eye and mouth holes, and whoever does gets to keep them, right?
Vyrn: You know about it?
Lancelot: Yes, we would play it on Halloween all the time as kids back in our village.
Lancelot: That really takes me back. Every year, I'd share all the treats I won with Vane.
The group loses track of time while playing with the children.
At some point, the two mysterious boys from earlier start playing with them as well.
Lancelot notices this but specifically decides to keep enjoying the game without drawing attention to them.
Vyrn: Ya can't quit while you're ahead, Lancelot! Let's play another!
Lancelot: Of course!
Lancelot: Is what I want to say, but I really need to take a break.
Lancelot takes a seat away from the group, then notices the two boys approaching him.
Older Brother: This brings back so many memories. It's just like it used to be.
Younger Brother: Isn't it fun? Hey, you should stay here with us, and never leave.
Lancelot quietly shakes his head.
Lancelot: ...
I'm sorry, but I can't do that.
Younger Brother: But why? You can't say no, you have to stay...
Brothers: We won't let you leave.
Suddenly, the two brothers turn into giant monsters right before Lancelot's very eyes.
Lancelot: That's... amazing. You've become perfect Halloween monsters.
As Lancelot looks up at the looming figures in shock, the black cat jumps out in front of them.
Black Cat: Hiss!
Lancelot: You're... It's all right, I understand.
Lancelot: You two are those white cats, aren't you?
Older Brother: That's right. There's only two of us now.
Younger Brother: So you should stay with us too, Mister, along with your friends. I'm sure it will be so fun.
Lancelot: ...
I'm sure it must be lonely to live here by yourselves. But unfortunately, we simply cannot stay.
Younger Brother: ...
Lancelot: And even if we did, we wouldn't be able to restore the village to its previous, bustling state.
Older Brother: ...
Lancelot: Do you two have some kind of special attachment to this place?
Older Brother: The village? No, we liked the villagers. We like people.
Lancelot: Then why don't you go search for new encounters? Just like the people who once lived here, you can find a new home too.
Younger Brother: Search?
Lancelot: It's not easy to leave a place that you're familiar with, so I understand why you would be hesitant.
Lancelot: But you two have each other. You each have a brother to stay by your side and support you, right?
Lancelot: If you work together, I know that you can blaze a new trail, just as I once did.
Older Brother: If we work together...
Younger Brother: To blaze a new trail...
After spending a few moments contemplating the idea, the two pumpkin monsters raise their heads with determination in their hearts.
Older Brother: Instead of waiting for hope to come to us... We'll go find it.
Younger Brother: Together, we can find a new home and start a new life.
The two brothers start shining with a bright light, which eventually engulfs Lancelot and everything else around them.
A Pair from the Past: Scene 3
Seeing the two white cats leave on their journey, the black cat—their elder sister—fades into Lancelot's new outfit. But during Feendrache's Halloween festivities, the crew members visit Lancelot and find that she has reappeared. Giving her the name Shadowyn, Lancelot mischievously smiles while thinking of how suprised his parents will be when he brings the mysterious feline home to meet them.
Lancelot: This is...
Having instinctively shielded his eyes from the blinding light, Lancelot realizes that he is back at their camp in the abandoned village.
Looking around to see that (Captain) and the other members of the group are waking up, he breathes a sigh of relief.
Vyrn: Yawn... Huh, when did I fall asleep?
Lyria: What happened to the festival? And the children we were playing with?
Lancelot: It seems we remember the same events... which means that experience really was no mere dream.
Searching for an explanation, Lancelot looks to his feet.
Older Brother: Yes, I guess you could say that those clothes conjured it from our desires and memories.
Lancelot: What exactly is this outfit?
Younger Brother: It was a treasure the villagers kept for generations, but eventually there was no one to pass it down and was forgotten.
Older Brother: It looks like it's chosen you as its new master.
Younger Brother: Uh-huh. I've never seen anyone actually wearing it before. It always rejected anyone who tried.
Vyrn: Its master? Is that safe? It's not gonna curse Lancelot or demand his soul or somethin', right?
Lancelot: No, I'm not sensing any desires from it. The magic just feels warm and pleasant.
Younger Brother: Yeah, that warmth is why we chose it for our bed.
Lancelot: I see. So you gained this strange power because of the magic in these clothes.
Younger Brother: Oh, so that's why we can talk. Does that mean we'll lose our voices once we leave them?
Older Brother: Still... we have to get going. To support each other, work together, and blaze a new trail.
Younger Brother: No matter what happens, we'll be able to press on if we have each other's backs. Thank you, Mister.
Having made their decision and expressed their gratitude, the two brothers dash off away from the group and out of sight.
Lancelot: Are you not going with them?
Black Cat: My little brothers will be fine now. Even without me, they'll find the support they need on their journey in each other.
Softly muttering to herself, the black cat fades into tiny balls of light, which are then absorbed by Lancelot's outfit.
Lyria: Hehe, we got so many treats.
Vyrn: I had no idea that we'd get to play pumpkinhole in Feendrache too!
Several days have passed since the events in the abandoned village.
(Captain), Vyrn, and Lyria are enjoying Feendrache's Halloween festivities.
Lyria: Look, I think we found it! This is the post where Lancelot is stationed!
Vyrn: Hey, Lancelot! We came to share some treats with ya!
Lancelot: Ah, (Captain). It seems that you all have been enjoying yourselves.
Vyrn: You bet we have!
Vyrn: Wait, hold up!
Black Cat: ...
Lyria: It's that black cat! I thought it disappeared!
Lancelot: Haha, so did I. But then she suddenly showed up again when I changed into these clothes.
Vyrn: Huh? Does that mean that she's the outfit's familiar or somethin'?
Black Cat: I'm not.
Vyrn: Woah! She spoke!
Black Cat: I just like how these clothes feel. I stayed with them so long that I became used to their magic.
Black Cat: I don't have anywhere else to go and I've taken a liking to Lancelot, so I've decided to live in them. Hope you're happy to have me.
With that, the black cat curls up next to Lancelot and falls asleep.
Lancelot: Haha. She marches to the beat of her own drum, just like any cat I suppose.
Vyrn: Are you okay with this, Lancelot? She doesn't seem dangerous, but...
Lancelot: It's fine. If she says she finds peace by my side, then she should stay as long as she pleases.
Lancelot: (She's just parted ways with the little brothers that she defied death to watch over. Her loneliness will not pass quickly.)
Lancelot: (No, it's rude to guess at her feelings. I'm sorry.)
The black cat gently strikes Lancelot with her long tail as if to assuage his concern.
Lyria: Hehe, you sure have made a cute friend!
Lancelot: I'll have to introduce her to Vane. Oh, I suppose we shouldn't just keep calling her "the black cat." I need to think up a name.
Lancelot: Hmm, what would fit?
Vyrn: You're gonna decide on it, huh? I guess that makes sense, but I'm feelin' kinda worried about it...
Lancelot: Spike... Tiger... Felix... No, I should focus specifically on her appearance...
Lancelot: I know! She's a black cat that showed up on Halloween, so I'll call her Shadowyn!
Vyrn: Isn't that a bit too direct?
Lancelot: No, it's cool! Right, Shadowyn?
Shadowyn lazily stretches her legs and gives Lancelot's legs another satisfied slap with her tail.
Vyrn: Anyway, that sure was a bizarre way to make a friend.
Lancelot: You can say that again. It's given me something else to put in my letter to my parents.
Lancelot: Actually, instead of writing a letter, I should surprise them with a trip home and introduce her in person.
Lancelot: I bet that will surprise them!
Lancelot: Father will probably exclaim that the stories of cat monsters from the east might be true and pepper us with questions... Hehe.
Lyria: Oh dear, Lancelot's making a mischievous face!
Vyrn: Haha, you're right! It looks like he's callin' on his old prankster instincts!
Lancelot: Yeah, I'm getting excited! I know that my mom just sent me some treats...
Lancelot: But that doesn't mean there's any rule against me playing a trick on her anyway, right?
It seems this man has an unexpectedly childish side to him. He resembles my little brothers.
Continuing to wave her tail, Shadowyn silently comments on her new favorite knight's grin.
