Auguste of the Dead - Chapter 2: Dawn of the Meg - Episode 2

The crew finds others hiding in the shopping mall as well. An imposing man named Roger describes the people outside as "zombies." The survivors in the shopping mall fall victim to the zombies outside one by one—first a man who decides to head home where his pregnant wife awaits, followed by a frustrated Elsam who insists on being left alone, then a vacationing woman who flies into a panic. Seeing this, a theory begins to form in Meg's mind.

???: What're all of you doing over there!
The crew look in the direction of the voice and see several people standing there.
Mimlemel: So there were people here before us.
Meg: Oh, good... I guess there are people who're still safe.
???: You lot better not try anything weird, got it? How'd you all get in here?
Elsam: Chill out, I swear we're not sus. We came in from the back door.
???: None of you are infected, are you?
Vyrn: Infected?
???: We need to know if you're gonna attack us like the zombies outside.
Elsam: Zombies? Do we look like zombies to you? We're as alive and kickin' as you are!
???: How do we know you're not lyin', hm? After all, the zombies are still a mystery.
???: So we can't afford to let our guard down. You might pounce at us at any minute, for all we know!
Mari: Excuse me? Then why don't all of you prove that you're not zombies first?
???: What!
Auguste Resident: Now, now... Come on, Roger. No use fighting here.
Roger: Tch.
At his companion's sound words, the man named Roger finally begins to calm down.
Auguste Resident: Did you come here to hide? We had the same idea and arrived here slightly before you did.
Meg: Do all of you know each other?
Auguste Resident: No, we just ended up here together. If it wasn't for this facility, who knows what would've happened to us by now...
Vyrn: I'm glad at least one person's willing to listen to us. Thanks.
Auguste Resident: Fighting among ourselves is pointless. We gotta help one another out in times like these!
Lyria: Yes, I think so too!
Auguste Resident: Don't take what Roger said earlier personally. Everyone's on edge with how things are right now.
Mari: Do you know anything about what's going on?
Auguste Resident: Not a thing... Actually, I was hoping you'd have some answers. What's the situation like outside?
Auguste Resident: In my case, I found myself surrounded by a bunch of people who got infected, and that's when I started running until I got to this place.
Lyria: What exactly do you mean by "infected"?
Auguste Resident: The people infected become like zombies. I'm thinking it's some kind of virus that's passed on when you get bitten.
Auguste Resident: But you've figured that out already, haven't you?
Meg: Yeah, we saw it happen in front of us. A virus, huh? That sounds possible...
Mari: It's terrible outside. Probably worse than when all of you were running here.
Auguste Resident: Right... Damn it! Is there nothing we can do?
Auguste Resident: My wife... She's at home all alone. I was out shopping when it started happening, so I couldn't go back.
Vyrn: So you don't know how your family's doing, huh...
Auguste Resident: It must've been scary for you kids too, when you were trying to find a place to hide.
Vyrn: Yeah... Some of our friends got turned into zombies.
Auguste Resident: That's awful! I'm really sorry to hear that.
Auguste Resident: All right. Then in that case...
Auguste Resident: Leave it to me! I'll go call for help!
Roger: Huh? What, are you crazy?
Meg: What are you talking about? It's dangerous outside!
Auguste Resident: I know that. But the thing is...
Meg: The thing is?
Auguste Resident: My wife is nine months pregnant. I just can't leave her by herself.
Kolulu: You must be worried sick. Still, going off on your own has gotta be a bad idea!
Meg: That's right! We can't let you go out alone. We'll come with you and—
Auguste Resident: No. Having too many people will attract attention. I can hide better if I'm by myself—plus I know the area like the back of my hand.
Vyrn: But who're you plannin' to call for help anyway? Is there even anyone out there?
Auguste Resident: I don't know... But staying put here isn't gonna do any good either. I wanna believe that there's something out there that can save us.
With that, the courageous man makes his way toward the exit. Standing in front of it, he turns back to his fellow survivors.
Auguste Resident: Once I'm out, make sure you seal this door again immediately.
Roger: You don't need to tell us twice. Make sure you come back in one piece, all right? You'd better not be abandoning us here.
Auguste Resident: Haha, of course not. I'll be back before you know it. Off I go!
Once the man exits the building, Roger immediately shuts the door again.
Feeling uneasy, the crew can do nothing but pray for the man's safety. However, not long after, they hear a sound coming from outside.
Distant Voice: Wah! Aaaaaaah!
Meg: That voice!
Vyrn: No way... Do you think...
Mari: Oh... Look over there!
At Mari's prompt, (Captain) and company look out from the crack of a nearby window and see the man that had been with them just a moment ago.
But he was clearly no longer the man they knew.
Auguste Resident: Aaaarr.... Aaarrrrg....
Catura: Oh! He's... a zombie now...
Lyria: No! It can't be...
Vyrn: This is worse than we thought. We can't outrun the zombies... The guy knew this place in and out and even he got caught.
The crew are dumbfounded at the gravity of their situation. Finally, Roger speaks up.
Roger: Listen up, y'all! From now on, I'll be in charge of all the food we have in here!
Elsam: Whoa, rewind, rewind. What's with the talk about food all of a sudden?
Roger: You saw what happened to the guy! Take one step outta this place and you're done for! We've got no choice but to stay here!
Roger: Listen carefully. I'm a major investor in this shopping mall!
Roger: You know what that means? It means that we've only got this place now thanks to me! You're all still alive 'cause I got this place going!
Elsam: What? So you're, like, loaded? Wait, you're pullin' my leg here, right?
Mari: It's true.
Mari: He's a pretty famous merchant and a big shot at one of Auguste's largest transport services.
Elsam: F'reals?
Mari: F'reals.
Roger: You see, young man? It's only right that I'm the one who gets to be in charge of the food here.
Roger: If you get what I'm sayin', then stay quiet and be thankful you're still alive. Or you can go out and get turned into a zombie for all I care! Gahaha!
Elsam: What'd you say!
Elsam clenches his fists tightly, shaking with rage. Finally, he turns with a pained expression on his face and begins to walk further into the facility.
Meg: Elsam! Where do you think you're going?
Elsam: You think I'm gonna stick around? I'm gonna go it alone!
Meg: What? But...
Vyrn: Just let him go for now. Lowain and Tomoi both went crazy... It's gotta be hard without his buds.
Lyria: Yeah... The three of them are always together. He must be so upset.
Meg: Oh... Yeah, you're right.
Meg: (But something's been bothering me...)
Elsam: Dang it... That geezer thinks he can do whatever he wants just 'cause he's got big bucks. Really grinds my gears.
Elsam: Whaddya think, Lowain? Tommy?
Elsam: Oh, wait...
Elsam still finds it hard to accept the fact that his two best friends are absent.
Elsam: Sniff... Lowain... Tomoi... Just what am I supposed to do heeere?
Elsam: You guys gotta come back so we can hit the club again...
Elsam bursts into sobs as loneliness washes over him. Just then, he hears a small sound from behind him.
Elsam: Eek!
Cat: Meeeow.
Elsam: Whew... It's just a cat. Don't scare me like that.
Elsam bends down to stroke the cat when the window behind him shatters without warning.
Elsam's Voice: Aaaaah!
Meg: That's Elsam's voice!
(Captain) and company hurriedly run to where they had heard the scream from.
They arrive at a broken window, from which the hands of several zombies have reached in and grabbed Elsam's leg, attempting to drag him outside.
Elsam: (Captain)! Help! I need help big-time!
Taking a closer look at the zombies, the crew recognizes two familiar faces among the throng.
Lowain & Tomoi: Wrrrrraaaheeeyyy...
Vyrn: Hey, it's Lowain and Tomoi!
Lowain: Come on down, Sammy... It's preeetty wild here...
Tomoi: You can say thaaat again...
Vyrn: Whoa, they can talk! Cut it out, you two!
Lowain: Sooorry... We're just doin' our job... being zombies...
Meg: What do you mean?
Though sentient, it appears Lowain and Tomoi have no choice but to attack other people as zombies.
Lyria: Wh-what should we do? They're dragging Elsam away!
Vyrn: Then we gotta pull him back inside!

Meanwhile, Lowain and the zombies keep a firm grasp on Elsam's leg, refusing to let go.
Elsam: Aaaaah! My joooints! You're gonna tear me apart! Stop tearing me apaaaart!
Lyria: Oh no! Elsam's joints are going to tear!
Vyrn: We gotta make some sacrifices!
Elsam: I don't wanna make this sacrifiiice!
It is in this moment that Elsam's body slips from the crew's grasp.
Vyrn: Elsaaaam!
Elsam: Waaah! Aaaaaaah!
Meg: Elsaaaaaaam!
Elsam is yanked outside, where Lowain and the other zombies immediately pounce on him. The crew can do nothing but stare in shock at the terrible sight.
Finally, after some time.
Elsam: Wrrrrraaaheeeyyy...
Lyria: Elsam... No... This can't be happening!
Vyrn: I don't believe it... Now Elsam's a zombie too!
Having successfully increased their number by one, the zombies turn back to the window for their next target.
Roger: Hey! What do you lot think you're doing? Hurry up and seal the window!
Meg: But Elsam and the others, they're...
  1. Let's find something to seal it.
  2. There has to be a way to save them.

Choose: Let's find something to seal it.

Meg: O-okay! I guess there's nothing we can do right now...

Choose: There has to be a way to save them.

Roger: Are you kidding? Stop messing around and take care of that hole this instant!
Vyrn: Argh! I guess we've got no other choice. We gotta board up the window!

The Bros: Wrrrrraaaheeeyyy...
The zombies reach and grab onto the window frame, attempting to haul themselves through it.
Meg: We'll have to push these guys back outside first. If only we had something long that we could use...
Mari: Meg! I found a log!
Meg: Perfect!
Meg and the others take the log from Mari and use it to nudge the zombies back out the window. The crew then proceeds to nail boards to the window, sealing the hole.
Vyrn: Huff, huff... Now they've got Elsam too...
Meg: We shouldn't have let him go alone... I had a feeling something was gonna go wrong...
With the scuffle over, a heavy silence falls over the shopping mall until, finally, someone raises her voice.
Tourist: I can't take this anymore...
Meg: Huh?
Tourist: Just how much longer do we have to keep hiding here? I've had enough!
Meg: U-um, please, calm down.
Roger: Stop making a ruckus, girl. We've all had enough. But that doesn't mean you can act like a spoiled brat!
Tourist: This isn't what I signed up for... I was just here on vacation with my friend. And now I'm all by myself...
Tourist: We should've gone somewhere safer! But my friend kept insisting that there were good deals in Auguste and not a lot of tourists...
Meg: ...
Roger: Stop that noise right now! Enough of your wailing!
Tourist: I don't want this... I hate this! I never even wanted to come to Auguste!
The girl's wails escalate as she flies into a panic. She turns and rushes out of the shopping mall before anyone can stop her.
Meg: W-wait! You can't go outside now—
Tourist: Someone! Anyone! Heeeelp!
Zombie 1: Graaaah!
Tourist: No! Noooooo!
The girl is immediately surrounded by the zombies with no way out.
Zombie 1: Aaaaarrrrg...
Tourist: Aaarrr...
Mimlemel: Gosh.
Kolulu: Th-this is terrible...
Before long, the girl, too, becomes part of the zombie army.
Zombie 2: Aaaaarrrrg...
Zombie 1: Aaarrr...
The captain and the others grit their teeth, frustrated at themselves for not having been able to stop the girl.
Meanwhile, Meg can't shake off the feeling that something is off.
Meg: (I feel like... there's something in common between all the people getting attacked. But what is it?)
