Auguste of the Dead - Chapter 2: Dawn of the Meg - Episode 4

(Captain), Meg, and a few others run out to save the lone survivor—Mimlemel and Catura become zombified in the process. (Captain) is about to be attacked when Kolulu saves the captain by hardening her body so it can't be bitten into. The crew learns from the rescued woman that the mysterious flying shadows people have been sighting are fish, and they may be the cause of the zombie situation. They decide to make for the Ocean Research Center in hopes of finding more clues to resolve the dire circumstances.

Survivor: Pant, pant...

(Captain) and company peek out from the window and see a woman who doesn't appear infected, running and trying to hide herself from the zombies.

But her footsteps are heavy, and the zombies have already caught on to her presence in the area.

Roger: Hmph! We can't help her now! Some people are just so slow!

Vyrn: Hey! How can you say that?

Roger: I was unlucky enough to have employed people like that before. People who're so slow that you're better off without 'em.

Roger: Wait a minute, where're you two going? You're not thinking of going out to save that woman, are you? Be serious here!

Meg: We're being completely serious. It's only right that we do.

Roger: Fools, both of you!

Mari: Meg...

Meg: I'll be fine, Mari. Wait here for me.

Without a second to spare, the two brush Roger's foul comments aside and run out of the building.

Zombie 1: Grrrr...

Zombie 3: Aaaaarrrg...

Survivor: Aah... I can't run anymore... This is it for me.

Meg: Don't give up.

Survivor: Huh?

Meg: We'll lead the way, so follow us and try not to make any noise. There's a safe place nearby.

Survivor: Oh, thank goodness! You don't know how relieved I am to see someone who's not a zombie!

The captain and Meg are about to show the woman to the shopping mall when they hear a chorus of growls.

Zombies: Aaaaarrrg...

Zombies: Grrrrraaah...

It appears the three survivors have already been located, as the zombies gather and block the path back to the mall.

Meg: There's so many of them... Don't get bitten, (Captain)! Even a nip will be enough to turn you into one of them.

The captain turns to face the foe, weapon at the ready. But the zombies, incapable of understanding or fear, continue to advance on them.

The three survivors find themselves in a bind, unable to bring themselves to hurt the townspeople turned zombies.

Sound of a Bugle: Tweedle-deedle-doo!

Zombie 4: Graaah?

The zombies instinctively turn toward the sudden sound of a bugle.

Mimlemel: Toooot.

Meg: Mimlemel!

Mimlemel: Good... They reacted to the sound. I'll distract them. Take this chance to run inside.

Mimlemel: Tweedle-deedle-doo!

Zombie 2: Graaaaah...

And just as Mimlemel had hoped, the zombies in the area begin to march in her direction.

Turtleton: You're being quite reckless, little lady.

With Mimlemel securely on its back, the turtle begins to move away from the incoming enemy.

Turtleton: I'm able to move fairly well thanks to your melody, but I'm afraid we're rather outnumbered.

Meg: Mimlemel, be careful! I'll be right back to help you!

Mimlemel: Don't worry. If it gets dangerous, I'll run too.

Meg: (Oh no. That sounds awfully like...)

(Captain), Meg, and the woman continue running toward the shopping mall, but more zombies stand in their way.

Catura: (Captain)...

Meg: Catura!

Meg and the captain are surprised to see Catura and Vyrn standing in front of them, despite having last seen them safely within the facility.

Catura: Wow... So many zombies...

Vyrn: Sorry... I tried to stop her.

Catura: I'll clear the way for you... I want to be... helpful too!

Meg: I-it's okay, really! Let's just go back!

Catura: Okay. I'll lead the way...

Catura: Let's hustle...

Catura begins to run as fast as she can.

But before long, she ends up lagging behind everyone else.

Vyrn: How are you so slow? Come on, pick up the pace!

Catura: Don't mind me... All of you go on ahead!

Meg reaches the shopping mall first. She makes sure the woman is safely inside before heading back out again.

Zombie 2: Graaaah!

Catura: Oof!

Zombie 2: Grrraaah... Chomp... Chomp...

Catura: Ohhh... nooo...

Meg: Caturaaaa!

Zombie 5: Grrrrraaah!

Mimlemel: Hands off. Use words to communicate. Being a zombie is no excuse for poor manners.

Zombie 5: Graaaah!

Mimlemel: Hey, what do you think you're doing?

Zombie 5: Chomp... Chomp...

Mimlemel: Gross. Go away. You picking a fight?

Meg: Miiiim!

Lyria: No... No! What can we do, (Captain)?

The captain makes to run over to where Mimlemel is.

Meg: Don't!

Meg grabs (Captain)'s arm, stopping the captain from going any further.

Vyrn: Why did you stop (Captain), Meg! Cow Prints and Stumpy are in danger!

Meg: You can't! If you go... and we lose you... the crew'll be done for!

Vyrn: ...!

Realizing the truth in Meg's words, Vyrn and the others look conflicted.

Catura: (Captain)... I'm a zombie now, but... I'm still pretty, riiight?

Mimlemel: Blooooop.

Mimlemel: Bad.

Vyrn: You're... You're kidding me! Cow Prints... Stumpy...

Mimlemel: Hey. I'm gonna bite you!

Vyrn: Eek!

(Captain) is shaken by the sight of Catura and Mimlemel, both of whom are now zombies, and fails to notice the incoming zombie.

Zombie 3: Graaaaah!

Lyria: Eeek! (Captain)!

Kolulu: Bite this!

Kolulu jumps in at the last second, shoving her arm in the zombie's mouth before it can bite (Captain).

Kolulu: Are you hurt, (Captain)? We can't lose you here, you know!

Meg: K-Kolulu... Your arm!

Kolulu: No need to worry.

Zombie 3: Grrr... Aaaarrrrrg!

With Kolulu's arm wedged between its jaws, the zombie has a hard time closing its mouth.

Kolulu: Sorry, Mr. Zombie!

Kolulu swings her arm down hard, slamming the zombie onto the ground face-up.

Kolulu: Hurry! Get inside!

Lyria: What about your arm, Kolulu?

Kolulu: Like I said, there's no need to worry about me. My body quirk is coming in quite handy.

Vyrn: Oh yeah! Your body can harden, huh?

Kolulu: That's correct. I gave it all or nothing, and luckily it seemed to work. There isn't a scratch on me.

Roger: Hey, brat. You sure you're still normal?

Kolulu: Yes, I'm completely fine! Besides, if I'd really been bitten, I would've turned into a zombie by now.

Meg: That's true. Everyone that got bitten turned into a zombie right away.

Kolulu: If only I'd figured this out earlier, then I would've volunteered to come out to save you instead...

Kolulu: Catura and Mimlemel wouldn't have had to sacrifice themselves like that...

Lyria: It's not your fault, Kolulu. You've never been in a situation like this before.

Roger: Doesn't matter if she has or not. Having two people go out to save one person sounds like a stupid thing to do.

Survivor: ...

Vyrn: What the heck, mister! You're completely rotten to the core!

Vyrn: You think so too, don't you, (Captain)?

Vyrn turns to (Captain), but the captain can only return a sad expression.

Lyria: We lost two more of our friends... Catura and Mimlemel...

Lyria: Sniff...

Vyrn: I guess now's not the time to argue...

(Captain) and company can't hide their regret as they think about their friends.

Survivor: I'm really sorry. It's because I was so slow in running...

Meg: Please, don't apologize. We simply can't abandon anyone who needs our help.

Meg: We're glad that you're safe.

Survivor: I'm sorry... I'm really sorry...

Survivor: When I think about how that fish could come flying at any moment, I just can't stop shaking...

Survivor: It's so quick, there's nothing anyone can do about it. That's why I was so scared and tried to hide myself while on the move.

Vyrn: Wha? What's this fish you're talkin' about?

Survivor: Um, I mean the fish that's been spotted around here recently.

Meg: You mean the mysterious creature was a fish? But what does that have to do with all this?

Survivor: I believe all of this is happening because of that fish.

Survivor: That's what the people I came across when I was running told me. We got separated though.

Meg: So the fish is the cause of all this, huh?

Vyrn: Come to think of it, Tomoi was talkin' about how Lowain got bitten by something last night, wasn't he?

Lyria: Oh, you're right. I remember now. Do you think he got bitten by the fish?

Vyrn: I dunno. It'd be nice if that gave us a clue on how to get Lowain and the others back to normal, but we've got nothin' right now...

Lyria: I want to find a way to help them! I don't want this to be the end... It just can't end like this!

Mari: The Ocean Research Center...

Meg: Huh? What was that, Mari?

Mari: The Ocean Research Center! If this whole situation is because of a fish, then maybe we can find out more by going there!

Mari: It's a facility where a lot of information about sea creatures is stored. A lot of academics and researchers are gathered there too.

Mari: If there's anyone who knows how to take down a fish, it's gotta be an expert, right?

Vyrn: You've got a point there.

Mari: Who knows? They might even know a way to bring the zombies back to normal.

Mari: There're plenty of poisonous sea creatures, so maybe they've done research on that kind of stuff before.

Meg: ...!

Vyrn: How did you know there was a facility like that anyway?

Mari: I made sure I knew every niche and corner of Auguste so I can show Meg around when the time comes.

Meg: Really? Thanks, Mari!

Mari: Hehe! I found a ton of nice places around town, so let's go check them out together once this is all over!

Meg: Okay!

Meg: Oh, but before that... First we gotta figure out how to get out of this mess. And the Ocean Research Center might have some clues...

And with that, (Captain) and company decide to follow Mari's advice and head for the Ocean Research Center.

Meanwhile, Meg remains preoccupied with her thoughts.

Auguste Resident: My wife is nine months pregnant.

Elsam: You think I'm gonna stick around? I'm gonna go it alone!

Catura: After this vacation... I'm going to... marry (Captain).

Meg still can't help but feel that the words her friends said before they got bitten are somehow connected to unraveling the mystery in front of them.
