Personal Best

Using her magic-imbued thread, Korwa draws out the truth—that the girl's mother doesn't want a ceremony due to her social anxiety. The girl's father then arrives and pleads that he wants to give his wife the chance to wear a wedding dress. The mother concedes to wearing one, but only if Korwa makes it. Though intimidated by the thought of designing her first ever wedding gown, Korwa finally decides to confront the challenge.

Korwa learns of a father and daughter's wish to let a mother wear a wonderful wedding dress.
To learn the truth about why the mother is refusing to let them buy her a dress though, Korwa prepares something special.
Korwa: Here we are... Put this there, and... done!
Lyria: Oh, what a beautiful ribbon!
Girl: Wow, Korwa! You embroidered that ribbon in a flash!
Vyrn: But hey, what's the ribbon for anyhows?
Korwa: You'll see... I bet this'll get mommy in a more open frame of mind.
Korwa: (This cloth has my magical thread woven in, so I can ever so slightly manipulate the mood of the person wearing it.)
Korwa: (Once my ribbon's on her, this girl's mama won't think it's so bad telling us her feelings.)
Korwa: (It should work—so long as it's not some deep, dark secret she can't tell a single soul or something.)
Girl's Mother: Hey there, Korwa! My kid didn't come here, did she?
Girl: Ah! Mama!
Girl's Mother: There you are! Bothering Korwa here while she's hard at work!
Girl's Mother: I don't care how good of a friend she is, when someone's working, you don't interrupt them. Are we clear?
Girl: Eep... Sorry, Mama...
Girl's Mother: Don't apologize to me. Tell her!
Girl: I'm sorry, Korwa...
Korwa: Aren't you a good girl for apologizing nicely! Next time we meet, let's make plans first, 'kay? That'll be fine, right?
Girl's Mother: Sigh... You spoil her, you know that? I am sorry though for the interruption.
Korwa: Not at all! No biggie!
Korwa: But forget that—did you run here? Your hair's a mess.
Girl's Mother: What! Oh, drat!
Korwa: Hahaha, have a seat! I'll fix it up in two secs.
The girl's mother is reluctant to impose, but finally gives in and has a seat.
Korwa: I'll braid it up a little. Like this... and a little ribbon here...
Korwa: By the by, you wouldn't happen to know why she came here, would ya?
Girl's Mother: Ah... I know, it was about the wedding dress, right?
Vyrn: Uh-oh, so you already know what's up?
Girl's Mother: My husband's been bugging me about giving me a wedding ceremony. Or at least a dress to wear finally...
Lyria: Yeah, we heard you didn't like the idea. Would you tell us why?
Girl's Mother: Well, I suppose...
Girl's Mother: I mean, having a wedding now? What would the guests think? And all the money it'd cost to have a ceremony.
Vyrn: Yeah, but your husband's been saving, so you have some money, right?
Korwa: Is there anything else? Some reason why you just don't wanna do it?
Girl's Mother: About that... It's, um...
Girl: Tell us, Mama! If I can understand why, then I'll tell Papa to forget the idea too!
Girl's Mother: Uh... You know... It's...
Girl: Uh-huh!
Girl's Mother: It's embarrassing!
Girl: Hm?
Girl's Mother: Getting all dressed up in fancy clothes. It doesn't suit me! Being around people makes me nervous too!
Korwa: Ah hah... Come to think of it, you've got some serious social anxiety, right?
Girl's Mother: I do. It got a little better working at a clothing store when I was young... But I'm still terrified to be in front of people!
Vyrn: So that's why, huh? Gettin' stared at by lotsa guests would be pretty intimidating...
Girl: Oh...
Korwa: I always say good fashion goes with any age, gender, or season! I believe that more than anything...
Korwa: But that's not gonna change being scared of big social gatherings, huh?
Girl's Mother: That's right... So we should just drop all this wedding talk—
Girl's Father: I heard everything!
Girl: Papa!
Girl's Mother: What... What are you doing here!
Girl's Father: Oh, Korwa. Here's your delivery of thread. Would you sign here?
Korwa: Ah, right. Thanks... Wait, so you heard all that?
Girl's Father: Well, just a little... Sorry, I didn't mean to eavesdrop.
Girl's Mother: Sigh... At least that makes things easier.
Girl's Mother: Now you know why I want you to stop this. Having a wedding now is simply more attention than I can handle.
Girl's Father: I get it. I'll drop the whole ceremony idea. It's no good forcing you. But...
Girl: But?
Girl's Father: You have to wear a wedding dress!
Girl's Mother: What!
Girl's Father: I want to see the most beautiful woman in the skies wearing one! I have to see it!
Vyrn: Whoa... That's one passionate plea!
Girl: No, not just see it. We have to at least make a painting to remember, Papa.
Girl's Father: Of course! If it's okay with your mother, I want to document it as much as possible. Only if she wants though.
Girl's Father: Please, I've been scraping extra money together for so long hoping to see you in a wonderful dress! It'd just be this one time!
Girl's Mother: O-oh... But still...
The girl's mother looks around the room for support, and her gaze stops on her old friend.
Girl's Mother: Korwa... If you make the dress, then I'll wear it!
Korwa: Huh? Why me?
Girl's Mother: You told me once that you know all about wedding dresses, right?
Girl's Mother: But you said you're still not sure how to make the greatest one possible.
Korwa: Yeah... You nailed it. But if I did this, it'd be my very first wedding dress, y'know?
Korwa: (Could I do it? I don't even have any design ideas floating around.)
Girl's Father: Korwa, please...
Korwa: (But... Yeah, if I'm always scared to take a chance, I'll never be able to create a design.)
Korwa: (Not to mention...)
Korwa: If making a wedding dress will give you two the fairy-tale moment you deserve, then there's only one thing to say!
Girl: Yay!
Korwa: I'll do it! I'll make you the most stunning wedding dress to ever grace the skies!
Girl's Father: Yeeeah! Thank you so much!
Girl's Father: Oh right, here's what I have for the budget.
Korwa: You saved this much? Way to go, man!
Girl's Father: Since we're not putting on a ceremony, everything can go toward the dress! Here it is!
Korwa: Alrighty! Just sit back and relax 'cause I've got this covered!
Lyria: You're finally going to design a wedding dress!
Lyria: Let us know what we can do to help! Right, (Captain)?
Korwa: Thanks, guys! Let's get some quick window-shopping in to scout out the market!
Spirits high, everyone heads into town discussing all things wedding dress related.
And in an unexpected turn of events, Korwa sets out on designing the wedding dress of her friend's dreams.

Personal Best: Scene 2

Korwa hurries into designing a wedding dress, but none of her ideas satisfy the high expectations she has for the thing that inspired her to become a designer. Her stress mounts until (Captain) helps her understand that what's most important is a design that's best for the person wearing it, thus illuminating what she must do.

Korwa: Now to add a peplum... No, scratch that. The waistline would be better slim!
Korwa: It should be a robe decollete. Wait, I lied. A robe montante gives a better vibe... I think...
Korwa: Ah! Totally forgot. That one designer's new spring lineup could give me the right idea maybe...
The daring designer, having taken on her first wedding dress commission, continues working on ideas in her room within the Grandcypher.
Lyria: Korwa's been holed up in there since we got back. It's been over a day—do you think she's all right?
Vyrn: I know she's gotta concentrate on her work, but I don't think she's been eating or drinking anything. I'm kinda worried.
  1. Let's go check up on her.

Choose: Let's go check up on her.

Lyria: Good idea! And we can bring her a snack and something to drink!
The gang goes to Korwa's room and tries knocking on the door, but there's no answer.
Vyrn: Hey... You don't think she worked so hard she passed out or somethin'?
Lyria: M-maybe we could take a peek inside!
Lyria: Hey, Korwa! We're coming in!
Korwa: This is wrong... And that should be like this... It needs a more prominent silhouette...
Korwa is hunched over her desk, completely engrossed in sketching out dress designs.
Korwa: No, no, these lines are too sharp... The bride's happiness needs to be expressed more softly... more lightly...
Vyrn: Heeey! Care to take a breath now and then?
Korwa: Wah!
Korwa: Oh, geez, you scared me... When did you guys come in here?
Lyria: You were concentrating so hard you didn't hear us knock, Korwa. Here, have a drink!
Korwa: Oh, thanks! I think I forgot about food and drink this whole time.
Vyrn: You're super cool for tryin' hard and all, but it's no use if you keel over before the dress is done.
Korwa: Ugh... I know, you're right, Vyrn. My bad.
Crestfallen, Korwa cheerlessly accepts the plate of food from (Captain) and Lyria and eats over her desk.
Lyria: Wow! You made tons of designs already!
Korwa: Huh? Oh, yeah. But look at them. Not one is good enough, right?
Lyria: Oh, you think so?
Korwa: Yeah, I've got nothing... I promised to make the greatest dress in the skies. But it's like my ship lost altitude fast and now I'm grounded.
Pondering over the dilemma, the crew asks to see the designs so far.
Lyria: Well, each one looks like a really great dress to me.
Vyrn: For real.
Lyria: Like here, this puffy skirt is so cute!
Korwa: Good eye. This one'll flow really beautifully as the bride walks.
Korwa: It puts the focus on that sacred moment when the bride walks down the aisle!
Lyria: Ahh, how impactful!
Korwa: And lookie here. This knee-length dress might be good for you, Lyria.
Korwa: Shorter hemlines are kinda trendy recently. They're also easier to move around in.
Lyria: Oh, they're all so pretty—I can't stop looking at them!
Korwa: Thanks! That's nice to hear. But, like... They're all missing something. None of these are the best ever.
Korwa: I've got this image in my head, y'know? Of a happy bride's ideal dress. These don't match up at all though.
Vyrn: Your ideal dress, huh... It's hard to get as good as our imaginations.
Lyria: You became a fashion designer because you love wedding dresses, right?
Korwa: Absolutely. A bride wearing a dress good enough for her happiest moment—that's the symbol of happily ever after to me.
Korwa: When I saw wedding gowns as a kid, I knew I wanted to make them. So I became a designer.
Korwa: I guess... that's why I'm so meticulous about 'em. A wedding dress has to be flawless.
Korwa: If even the smallest detail isn't right, there's no way I can send off the bride in a dress I made.
Korwa: I have to do this...
Lyria: All that devotion must make you pay extra careful attention.
Korwa: Yeah... I can't help it.
Korwa: But, like, I really wanna make this one seriously perfect!
Korwa: For her and her family, and to break out of my own shell. I really need to do this!
Korwa: So I have to make the best dress in the skies... Right?
Korwa: Hey, (Captain), what do you think? Notice anything funky in my designs?
Seeing Korwa at her wits end, (Captain) thinks over the sketches on the desk.
  1. What's the "best dress in the skies" exactly?

Choose: What's the "best dress in the skies" exactly?

Korwa: Huh?
Korwa: You know... It's a dress that makes the bride happy... And, like, it's the one that suits her the most...
Korwa: Suits her?
Korwa: Oh... Oooh!
Lyria: Korwa?
Korwa: Riiight, that's it! (Captain), you're a genius! What's the matter with me!
Korwa: All this time, I was wrapped up in this best in the skies stuff when I shoulda been thinking about the person who's gonna wear the dress.
Vyrn: So that's it! Of course, (Captain)'s perfect dress would be pretty different than Lyria's.
Korwa: Right, right, right! Exactly! What I need to make isn't the best dress in the skies...
Korwa: It's the dress that's the most perfect in all the skies for my friend!
Korwa: It just needs that one, special something... The most important piece is missing.
Korwa: Ug... Wedding gowns are so important to me that I went all outta whack.
Lyria: The clothes you make for us are always the best ones we could hope for.
Lyria: So the dress you make for the bride will be the best she could wish for too, Korwa!
Korwa: Thanks, Lyria... Time to put my quill to the paper and make that happen!
Korwa: First I'm gonna take these designs and see what the fam has to say!
Lyria: Great!
Lyria: But before you go, would you please rest and have something to eat?
Vyrn: You can't work if you get sick!
Korwa: Ahaha... Yeah, sorry 'bout that. I won't overdo it this time, promise.
Korwa pinky swears with (Captain) and prepares to head out. But not until after some much-needed food and rest.

Personal Best: Scene 3

Korwa completes her design and, after some frantic labor, successfully makes the dress. It looks wonderful on the mother, pleasing her whole family. With this personally meaningful accomplishment done, Korwa promises to design something special for the girl and Lyria as well one day and hopes to continue making clothes that bring happiness to others.

Vyrn: Hey, Fashion Wiz! That lace you special ordered came in!
Lyria: And so did the fabric we requested from Siero! I'll go pick it up.
Korwa: Much gratitude, Vyrn and Lyria! That's a huge help!
With the final design ready, Korwa gets to work making the real deal, turning her room into a battlefield in the process.
The days go quickly though, and it's already the eve of the wedding gown's unveiling.
Korwa: The angle of the corsage is off... A little... this way...
Girl's Mother: I'm sorry you have to work so late making my dress.
Korwa: Nah, forget it—I'm just super picky. I won't be satisfied till I get this right.
Korwa: The artist's coming at noon tomorrow, right?
Girl's Mother: Yeah. My hubby's so excited to have this portrait made.
Korwa: Hehe, what a great husband though. Wanting to always remember how stunning you'll look.
Korwa: I gotta make sure I don't disappoint that kind heart of his...
Korwa: I put everything I have into this, but it's the first time I've felt so fidgety.
Girl's Mother: You always used to talk about how special wedding dresses are.
Korwa: Yep... I really want the bride to have the happiest moment of her life. Like she's in a fairy tale.
Korwa: It's great to have the opportunity to give that to someone. I'm still not convinced I can do it though...
Korwa: Yikes, I shouldn't be saying anything to make you anxious—you're gonna be wearing this dress tomorrow. Sorry.
Girl's Mother: Oh, no need to apologize. Anyone would be nervous doing something for the first time like you are, right?
Girl's Mother: But I already knew it when we did the fitting. This gown is perfect for me!
Girl's Mother: The whole family was surprised by it. There's no doubt this is the dress for me.
Korwa: Teehee... I couldn't ask for a better reaction. This wedding dress is all about you.
Korwa: When I made it, I knew it had to be the best dress for you in all the skies!
Girl's Mother: And you put the work in and really did it... You're amazing, Korwa.
Girl's Mother: I just know you're going to make the best wedding dress in the skies for another lucky lady out there next.
Korwa: I really hope I can. No, I'm gonna make sure I can, definitely.
Girl's Mother: I know you can. And... if my little girl ever needs to wear one someday...
Girl's Mother: You'll make the best one for her, won't you?
Korwa: You got it! The greatest in the skies, and nothing less.
Korwa: Wow, I'm excited thinking about what kind of dress I'll be making for her!
Korwa finishes adjusting the corsage and nods with a feeling of fulfillment.
Korwa: There we go.
Korwa: I can't wait for you to wear this tomorrow so I can see you in it!
Under a clear blue sky, the beautiful bride stands in her wedding dress beside the handsome groom in his tuxedo.
The portrait artist works intently on capturing the lovely couple while Korwa and the others watch from nearby.
Girl: Miss Painter said I can be together with them in the next one!
Korwa: Oh, good for you! The whole fam together will make a great memory to have.
Lyria: You know... Sniff... The bride really does look stunning!
Girl: Yeah! The dress is so pretty on her, she looks like a princess!
Lyria: I hope I get to wear a wedding dress like that one day...
(Captain) agrees with Lyria and sighs in admiration of how gorgeous the bride is.
Girl: Me too... Oh, but I guess I need to find a really kind person like Papa first, huh.
Korwa: Heehee, when the time comes, mind if I make dresses for you both?
Korwa: I promise to make the best dress in the skies for each of you! Pretty please?
Girl: Ahaha, shouldn't we be asking you, Korwa?
Korwa: Even if it's not wedding dresses you want, all I need to be happy is to make clothes that make you two happy.
Korwa: Got it? You have to let me, 'kay? I want you both to have that special moment too one day.
Smiling radiantly, Korwa watches in awe at the bride wearing the very wedding gown she created.
Her dress is the purest reflection of her wish for everyone to live happily ever after.
