Thundering Tempest

Itadori and Fushiguro chat with Rackam on the bridge of the Grandcypher. Their talk turns to the subject of amusement in the skydom, prompting Rackam to bring up skyracing. He gives the boys a short explanation on the basics of the sport, which piques Itadori's interest. Rackam senses this, and tells them that a member of the crew, Meteon, is planning to enter an upcoming race.

It's a day like any other on the Grandcypher...
Yuji Itadori: Whoa... Awesome!
Rackam: This here's the bridge, where I pilot the Grandcypher.
Yuji Itadori: The ceiling is super high and the view is great! This is amazing!
Rackam: Haha! Pretty neat, right!
Itadori is on the bridge of the ship, where he has a delightful chat with its helmsman, Rackam.
Yuji Itadori: So this... wheel thingy is what you use to control this gigantic ship?
Rackam: More or less. There are a bunch of other rooms that are crucial in keeping the Grandcypher airborne.
Rackam: But when I have my hands on the wheel, that's when I most feel like I'm one with the ship, get me?
Yuji Itadori: That's so cooool!
Megumi Fushiguro: Itadori? There you are.
Yuji Itadori: Oh, hey, Fushiguro!
Yuji Itadori: Rackam was just showing me how he drives the Grandcypher!
Rackam: You mean steer.
Yuji Itadori: Ah, right, my bad. Steer.
Megumi Fushiguro: Hmm... I've never been on the bridge of a ship before.
Yuji Itadori: Me neither. Pretty cool, right?
Rackam: Haha, you're not tired of watching me yet?
Yuji Itadori: No way. I haven't even been in the cockpit of an airplane before. All of this is new to me.
Rackam: Well, I'm glad you're enjoying yourself.
Rackam: You know, finding fun stuff to do during a long journey in the sky can be really tough.
Yuji Itadori: Fun stuff, huh...
Yuji Itadori: What's there to do in this world anyway? Like, what does everyone do for fun?
Yuji Itadori: I haven't seen any TV or movies here...
Rackam: Well... reading is one of the affordable activities, so some people do that. In fact, we've got a few bookworms on the crew.
Yuji Itadori: Wow, so they're just like Fushiguro. You read a ton, right?
Megumi Fushiguro: I read enough. But seeing as I can't make any sense of this world's writing system, I don't see myself getting anything done here.
Rackam: Ah, so our writing is different from yours. Hm, what else do we do for fun...
Rackam: You could go see a play or a concert... or maybe go to a casino.
Yuji Itadori: Whoa, you have casinos here!
Rackam: Yeah, there's one called the Jewel Resort. It's a real famous casino liner.
Yuji Itadori: So even your casinos are on ships? Sounds neat.
Rackam: Ah, right, skyracing's probably the hottest ticket right now.
Yuji Itadori: Skyracing?
Rackam: It's a kind of sport racing that pits small crafts called speedships against each other.
Yuji Itadori: How small are these ships?
Rackam: I'd say they can fit about one or two people.
Yuji Itadori: So they're like our boat or car races?
Megumi Fushiguro: Seems like it.
Rackam: They're held on a ton of different tracks, and there are a bunch of rules that allow racers to obstruct or even attack their opponents.
Yuji Itadori: So these races can get pretty wild, huh!
Rackam: They can. It's basically a combat sport.
Rackam: People guess the outcome of the race, place bets on it and everything. It's definitely the thing to do as of late.
Yuji Itadori: Whoa, that sounds like fun.
Rackam: If you're interested in seeing one, then you've come at the right time.
Rackam: One of our crewmates, Meteon, is a skyracer, and he's got a race coming up soon.
Rackam: (Captain) and some of the crew are gonna go watch and cheer him on. You boys should tag along.
Yuji Itadori: What about you, Rackam? You're the helmsman of this ship, right? Why don't you race too?
Rackam: Hahaha! No racing for me. Speedships and airships are two entirely different beasts.
Rackam: The world of a racer is about speed, battles that come down to a fraction of a second. I don't stand a chance against them.
Rackam: When it comes to skyracing, I'm better off cheering from the stands.

Thundering Tempest: Scene 2

The Grandcypher docks on an island, and Itadori makes his way to a skyrace track with Fushiguro in tow. Trouble strikes soon after their arrival, as a storm caused by two primals has made the track unsuitable for racing. With (Captain) and Itadori in the Nightcypher, and Meteon and Fushiguro in the Blue Orbit, they split up and make their way to the primals.

Yuji Itadori: Whoa, look at all these people!
Soon after the Grandcypher docks at an undisclosed island, Itadori makes his way to a packed skyracing track with Fushiguro in tow.
Yuji Itadori: Wow... Check out all the booths and stores here too.
Megumi Fushiguro: This place is decked out like a festival.
Yuji Itadori: There's electricity in the air. I guess people are really crazy for skyracing, huh.
Yuji Itadori: Oh, I think I see the betting window over there.
Spectator 1: Yo, did you place your bet?
Spectator 2: Nah, not yet. Still stuck on who to pick...
Spectator 2: The safe bet would be Meteon... But I dunno, maybe I should go with a dark horse...
Fan 1: Boy, I hope the race starts soon! Let's go, Meteon!
Fan 2: It's been a while since I've been able to make my way to the track. Oh man, I can't wait to see Meteon, I'm getting chills!
Yuji Itadori: Meteon sounds like one of the more popular racers. He's like our idols back home!
Megumi Fushiguro: Makes sense. Apparently, he's won the big annual skyracing tournament four or five times in a row, or something.
Yuji Itadori: I really wanna try putting a bet down while we're here...
As Itadori continues to peer at the betting window, Fushiguro curiously tilts his head at him.
Megumi Fushiguro: Are you all right?
Yuji Itadori: Hm? Oh, it's just, I heard there weren't any age restrictions on betting in this world.
Yuji Itadori: And it's not like I can expect to win any actual money to use back home from this, so it's basically a game.
Megumi Fushiguro: Yeah, I guess so.
Yuji Itadori: Okay, who should I go for... Maybe Meteon? You know, since he's one of the crew?
Yuji Itadori: Ahh, but the odds on him look low... Do I wanna go for a surefire bet, or...
Megumi Fushiguro: What's the point in giving it any thought? There's not enough info for you to make a decision.
Megumi Fushiguro: You're supposed to guess the outcome and place your bet based on what you know about the track, the racers, and the ships, right?
Megumi Fushiguro: All we know is that Meteon is a popular racer.
Megumi Fushiguro: We haven't seen even one of these races play out yet.
Megumi Fushiguro: There's no way to make an informed decision based on what we know.
Yuji Itadori: Hmm...
Megumi Fushiguro: What're you hmm-ing about?
Yuji Itadori: Nothing, I was just thinking you're right. Are you into this kind of stuff, Fushiguro?
Megumi Fushiguro: I was just stating facts, that's all.
Yuji Itadori: I know, but still...
Yuji Itadori: Huh? What's with the commotion back there?
Megumi Fushiguro: Maybe it's an argument?
Yuji Itadori: Who knows...
Yuji Itadori: Oh, it's (Captain) and the crew.
Itadori points in the direction of the noise, identifying the crew with (Captain) in the center looking distressed.
Megumi Fushiguro: Looks like something's wrong.
Yuji Itadori: Let's go see what's up.
Organizer: I'm not sure we can take care of the issue on our own...
Yuji Itadori: (Captain)!
Lyria: Ah, Itadori and Fushiguro.
Yuji Itadori: Something happen? You guys seem troubled...
Vyrn: Yeah, it seems the track's got a little problem on their hands...
The race organizer and (Captain) explain that weather conditions on the track have suddenly taken a turn for the worse.
Organizer: Rough skies are something we can put up with. In fact, they often make races more exciting...
Organizer: But this time, it's a little more than just bad weather...
Lyria: Apparently, primals are behind this.
Megumi Fushiguro: Primals...
Yuji Itadori: So their actions can even change the weather...
Vyrn: They can. They're beings that go beyond what we know, y'know?
Lyria: Primals with control over wind and water certainly exist...
Lyria: Ones with enough power to affect the weather aren't as rare as you might think they are.
Yuji Itadori: I see... So one of these nasty primals got onto the track and messed with the weather, is that it?
Organizer: Yes... And, under these conditions, I'm afraid the race can't continue...
Meteon: I guess we'll have to do something about that, won't we?
Vyrn: Hey, it's the champ! You've been listening in the whole time?
Meteon: I can't stay quiet when the very fate of the race is on the line.
Meteon: Besides, ever since I met you guys, I've gotten used to these kinds of crazy situations.
Meteon shrugs playfully and turns to face (Captain).
Meteon: We're gonna fix this. We're not just gonna leave this race hanging, right?
  1. You got that right.

Choose: You got that right.

Meteon: Nice. Okay, give me the lowdown on what's going on.
Vyrn: Never imagined we'd have to help out at a race...
Vyrn: Good thing we have the Nightcypher.
Meteon's beloved speedship, the Blue Orbit, and (Captain)'s Nightcypher are in the dock, going through a final inspection before takeoff.
Yuji Itadori: (Captain), I didn't know you could pilot a speedship.
Yuji Itadori: Why didn't you enter yourself into the race?
Meteon: Keep pressing, Itadori. I've been trying to tell (Captain) to give racing a shot for who knows how long now.
Meteon: All right. The Blue Orbit's ready to go.
Lyria and the organizers look into the whereabouts of the primals, and find out two have emerged just away from the course.
Meteon: The weather's gotten worse. I'm betting our speedships are the only thing that could penetrate this storm.
Lyria: I see, so the plan is to split into two groups, one in each speedship. What about you two?
Yuji Itadori: We'll help too. Right, Fushiguro?
Megumi Fushiguro: Right. You'll be facing primals. The more power you have on your side, the better.
Meteon: Thanks, guys. I really appreciate it. Okay then...
Meteon: Fushiguro, you're riding with me in the Blue Orbit.
Meteon: Itadori, you get in the Nightcypher with (Captain).
Yuji Itadori: Gotcha!
Megumi Fushiguro: All right.
Meteon: We'll confront the primals in these pairings.
Lyria: Be careful, everyone!
Vyrn: Wait, I gotta ask... How'd you choose the pairs?
Meteon: Weight distribution.
Lyria: You're worried about the weight?
Meteon: The Nightcypher was built to fit two riders, but the Blue Orbit only fits one.
Meteon: By the looks of you boys, you're the lighter one, right, Fushiguro? Itadori's got all that muscle, he'd weigh the Blue Orbit down.
Yuji Itadori: Man, you racers think of everything!
Meteon: Fushiguro, it'll be a tight fit, but I'm gonna need you to bear with me, okay?
Megumi Fushiguro: Got it...

Thundering Tempest: Scene 3

Itadori and (Captain) manage to back Huanglong into a corner, but it suddenly flees in the direction of another primal, Qilin. They chase after Huanglong and reunite with Fushiguro and Meteon, where they team up to defeat the powerful pair of primals. The race is ultimately canceled, but Itadori and Fushiguro still manage to make the most of their day, finding their amusement in the night sky aboard the starlit deck of the Grandcypher.

Yuji Itadori: This storm is insane! I dunno how you can drive in this, (Captain)! Ah... I mean steer!
With Itadori in the passenger seat, (Captain) pilots the Nightcypher through an intense storm on their way to confront the primals.
Yuji Itadori: Ah, (Captain)!
Yuji Itadori: That's it, isn't it! One of the primals!
Huanglong: ...!
Yuji Itadori: Whoa... It looks pretty angry!
Yuji Itadori: Keep the ship steady! I'll engage it when you get close!
(Captain) nods and firmly grasps the steering wheel.
Huanglong: ...!
Yuji Itadori: All right, here I go!
Yuji Itadori: Hrraaaah!
The Nightcypher dodges Huanglong's attacks while Itadori rains blow after blow upon it.
Yuji Itadori: Nice! Just one more hi—
Yuji Itadori: What!
Yuji Itadori: Shoot, it's running away!
Suddenly, Huanglong recoils, and begins to escape.
Yuji Itadori: C'mon, let's go after it!
Yuji Itadori: What's it doing?
Yuji Itadori: Hey, the Nightcypher doesn't come with any weapons, does it?
  1. Nope.

Choose: Nope.

Yuji Itadori: Dang. Then we better get on its tail quick!
Their short chase finds them meeting up with another speedship.
Yuji Itadori: Huh?
Yuji Itadori: Hey, it's the Blue Orbit!
Meteon: (Captain)!
Megumi Fushiguro: Itadori!
Huanglong & Qilin: ...!
Megumi Fushiguro: Ngh!
Yuji Itadori: I guess two primals means twice the power.
Yuji Itadori: Too bad for them, the same goes for us!
Yuji Itadori: Fushiguro!
Megumi Fushiguro: Nue!
Megumi Fushiguro: Itadori, use Nue! I'll summon Totality and we'll attack them from both sides!
Yuji Itadori: Gotcha!
In the midst of the raging storm, Itadori skillfully bounds off Nue and syncs up with Totality to unleash a powerful pincer attack upon the primals.
Yuji Itadori: Hraaah!
Divine Dog: Totality: Ruff!
Megumi Fushiguro: ...
Huanglong & Qilin: ...!
Megumi Fushiguro: I get it now.
Megumi Fushiguro: (The primals are coordinating their attacks... But I think I see an opening where we can squeeze in an attack of our own just before they strike!)
Megumi Fushiguro: Itadori, back off!
Yuji Itadori: Right!
Megumi Fushiguro: Attack them when I summon Max Elephant. Got it?
Yuji Itadori: Roger that!
Megumi Fushiguro: Meteon, take us up higher!
Meteon: You got it!
Megumi Fushiguro: Max Elephant!
Max Elephant: ...!
Megumi Fushiguro: Now, Itadori!
Yuji Itadori: Hmph!
Yuji Itadori: Black Flash!
Yuji Itadori: Black Flash!
Meteon: Nice!
Yuji Itadori: The storm, it's...
Megumi Fushiguro: It's cleared up.
Yuji Itadori: Haaaah... A storm created by primals... That was some crazy stuff back there!
After a long day, Itadori and Fushiguro decompress on the deck of the Grandcypher.
Megumi Fushiguro: It's unfortunate the race still had to be postponed.
Yuji Itadori: Yeah, that sucked. But at least we got a chance to ride in those neat speedships.
Yuji Itadori: We were really jetting around in that storm, it was nuts!
Megumi Fushiguro: Apparently, it's not uncommon for races to be held in that kind of weather.
Yuji Itadori: For real?
Megumi Fushiguro: That's what Meteon told me anyway.
Yuji Itadori: Skyracing is unreal. You have to deal with the other racers' attacks too, right?
Megumi Fushiguro: Well, Rackam did say it was like a combat sport.
Yuji Itadori: Oh, speaking of combat, I heard they have fighting tournaments in this world too.
Megumi Fushiguro: Like martial arts tournaments?
Yuji Itadori: Yeah. It's called the Grandsky Rumble... or something like that. It sounded kinda interesting.
Yuji Itadori: Maybe I should try entering it.
Megumi Fushiguro: We can't keep messing around here, you know that.
Yuji Itadori: Yeah, I suppose you're right...
Itadori's light chuckle dissipates into the night sky.
Megumi Fushiguro: I've got some things to take care of back home.
Yuji Itadori: True.
Megumi Fushiguro: We can't play around in this world forever.
Yuji Itadori: You're right.
As the night grows darker, the Grandcypher's deck is bathed in the soft light of the stars.
Yuji Itadori: Wow, check out these stars. I've never seen them light something up like this before... It's like we're in the sky.
Megumi Fushiguro: We are in the sky.
Yuji Itadori: Oh, right.
Megumi Fushiguro: I'm guessing no matter how much distance we cover on this ship, we won't make it home. This sky isn't connected to our world.
Yuji Itadori: Yeah, maybe not...
Yuji Itadori: But this view is amazing... And I'm just happy for this chance to take it all in, you know?
Megumi Fushiguro: I suppose you have a point...
A quiet, gentle breeze blows across the deck as the Grandcypher journeys on through the starlit sky.
