A Crewmate's Worst Fear
The repairs for the Grandcypher were now complete. Our heroes made preparations for their journey to Estalucia, Island of the Astrals. As Lyria and the others spoke of the goals of their journey, Noa fretted over their fate. However, Noa was invited to join them while he conversed with his old friend Rackam, when he disclosed his true intent: he wished to warn them precisely because (Captain) and company were so important to him.
Noa: Shall we finally get going already?
Vyrn: Ah! That’s because what we are aiming for is Estalucia, Island of the Astrals!
The repairs for the Grandcypher were now complete. Our heroes prepare to embark to the next island.
Noa: That’s right... Wasn’t that the objective of your journey?
Lyria: Yes! Though we are also running away from Imperial agents...
Vyrn: Hahaha... And that’s not all! (Captain)’s father is waiting for him on the Island of the Astrals!
Noa: Is that so... He is waiting on the Island of the Astrals...
Lyria: And... I feel that I will come to truly understand my nature if I am able to make it to the Island of the Astrals.
Noa: Lyria... You are unconsciously feeling what your fate will be.
Noa: For certain, it is difficult to resist the urge to know the truth about yourself...
Noa: However... The truth always cuts cold and sharp like a blade...
Lyria: What? Uhhh...?
Noa: Let us speak clearly and frankly. I do not think I should continue with you on your journey.
Vyrn: What?!? What on earth do you mean by that?!
Noa: The truth you seek... The end of the sky will not necessarily make you happy.
Noa: To the contrary, the truth that lies before you in this sky... The truth that involves the stars will torment you.
Noa: There are truths that will make people unhappy when they are brought to light.
Noa: I... Do not want to see you being sad. I do not want to make you sad.
Noa: There is no need for you to worry about the Erste Empire itself.
Noa: It’s because that country is quite twisted. They have many tricks they can use to deceive you.
Vyrn: Hold on just a minute! If that’s the case, then what about the letter from your father?!
Noa: Children do not have to continue to follow in their parents' footsteps. You yourself can also blaze a new trail.
Noa: What’s more... Vyrn my little friend. You cannot be a mere bystander looking on.
Noa: The truth that awaits you in the Island of the Astrals is difficult for even me to accept!
Rackam: Noa, you little jerk, quit trying to tear us down.
Rackam: Um... Noa, what is it that you say you know?
Noa: That is the truth that you do not know...
Rackam: And that’s it? I don’t know how much you are exaggerating about this truth, but that will not be our future.
Noa: That’s right... However, for you all, that truth without a doubt will...
Rackam: We will not be defeated by this so-called “truth” of which you speak...
Rackam: You can’t see the future. So why don’t you come with us?
Rackam: Listen to me! Noa! Your concerns are ridiculous. We will show you!
Noa: Rackam... Hahaha... You never change.
Noa: Even though you brought about this situation in which the Grandcypher cannot fly thanks to a promise you made so recklessly...
Noa: You have not grown much, have you, Rackam? You are just the same as you were long ago.
Rackam: No... Well, maybe you’re right about that...
Noa: Hahaha, it was a bit mean to me to say that, wasn’t it.
Noa: It’s okay... Your recklessness might be a character defect, but I like it.
Noa: So there you have it, Captain.
Noa: I have found myself being invited on a journey together with a helmsman of your caliber...
Noa: Whatever should I do? Could I too be included in a traveling fellowship?
Choose: Of course.
- Of course.
- We'd absolutely love to have you aboard!
Noa: Thank you. I will spare no effort in my role as a member of your Order.Choose: We'd absolutely love to have you aboard!
Noa: Hahaha... Quite a warm reception. It feels good to have others want you on board.Continue 1
Rackam: I was worried for a second there.
Noa: You all are very important to me. That is why I wanted to warn you so badly...
Noa: Hahaha... Whatever the case, it was somehow a nostalgic feeling.
Noa: I wonder what awaits me on my journey... This is going to be fun.
Thus Noa was newly welcomed back by (Captain) and company.
Prior to a chance meeting with that impending reality, the party found itself newly resolved to continue with its journey.
Secret of the Grandcypher
Vyrn and company notice Noa having a conversation with a pillar. Puzzled, they question him and discover that he isn't speaking to the pillar, but the airship itself. In response to Noa's request, who claims the airship is using the ill-fitting materials, the party decides to search for the necessary supplies.
Noa: Hm... I see...
Noa: Hehe. I yeah. I know, but...
Noa: That's no good. Alright... I'll take care of it.
Lyria: Huh? Noa? What are you doing here?
Vyrn: Hey... were you talking to that pillar just now...?
Noa: Yeah. Apparently it's not doing so well...
Vyrn: Wha!? You were really talking to the pillar?
Noa: Ah... looks like there's a bit of confusion.
Noa: I wasn't talking to the pillar, I was talking to the airship... Grandcypher.
Lyria: What?! You can talk to Grandcypher?
Noa: Hehe... I am a ship building primal beast after all.
Vyrn: I see! Tell me, what were you and Grandcypher talking about?
Noa: Hehe... that's between me and Grandcypher...
Noa: But it seems Grandcypher is a bit distressed.
Noa: Apparently the wrong materials were used in previous repairs and its been agitating it.
Vyrn: Wow, you can tell that by...talking to it?
Lyria: Then why don't we find material that's better suited for Grandcypher?
Lyria: We should do it as a token of appreciation for everything its done for us!
Noa: That's a good idea. I'm sure it'll make Grandcypher happy.
Vyrn: Okaay! It's settled then, let's go! (Captain)!
Secret of the Grandcypher: Scene 2
To find materials fit for Grandcypher, (Captain) and company visit Lumacie Archipelago. As an expert airship builder, Noa personally selects each tree to be used in his craft. However, he has been having issues finding just the right materials. The party accompany Noa into the depths of the forest.
(Captain) and company made their way to Lumacie Archipelago in search of materials fit for Grandcypher.
Noa: No... not this one. I should be able to find a better one.
Lyria: Amazing! You can tell which trees will go well with Grandcypher?
Noa: Building ships is my specialty, which includes picking out the materials.
Noa: Besides, Grandcypher is special. It needs lumber from a very special type of tree or it won't work.
Vyrn: Well? Did you find that special tree?
Noa: Not around here... I can't find a pure one because they've blended together.
Noa: I'm sure I could find a better tree if we go deeper into the forest...
Vyrn: Okaay! Let's keep going then!
Lyria: Yeah! Let's do it! (Captain)!
Secret of the Grandcypher: Scene 3
In the depths of Lumacie Forest, the party finds a tree that was planted by the people of Estalucia, the Island of the Astrals. They use its lumber as material for Grandcypher's repairs. Noa then reveals that he had built the airship to be used to invade the skydoms.
(Captain)'s party reach the depths of the forest.
Noa paused in front of a small grove of trees.
Noa: Hm... one of these trees should work.
Noa: This is surprising... I didn't think there would be any left.
Noa: Heh... this smell brings back memories. It's been so long...
(Captain)'s party takes a tree from the grove.
They then made supplies from the tree and used it to repair Grandcypher.
Lyria: Wow! It feels like Grandcypher is more energetic than usual!
Noa: Looks like Grandcypher is in a good mood. It's grateful to you all for your help.
Vyrn: Hm... so that means Grandcypher was built in Lumacie, right?
Noa: No, Grandcypher was built in a place far, far away.
Noa: But there are still trees that were planted by the Astrals long ago in the depths of Lumacie's forest.
Vyrn: Huh? What do you mean?
Noa: Grandcypher was made in the Island of the Astrals, Estalucia.
Noa: As a ship building primal beast, the Astrals originally had me make it as the flagship for their fleet.
Noa: That fleet was for invading the skydoms, but...
Noa: Due to a turn of events, it eventually washed up on Port Breeze.
Vyrn: What!? Th-Then... going to the Islands of the Astrals will be a homecoming for Grandcypher...
Noa: You could say that... heh... a homecoming after several hundred years.
Lyria: Then that's all the more reason to get to the Islands of the Astrals!
Lyria: Hehe... on to the Island of the Astrals, right, Grandcypher?
On Waves of Grace
(Captain) and the crew continue their voyage aboard the Grandcypher. One day, the airship suddenly becomes unresponsive, and makes an emergency landing on a nearby island. The shipwright primal beast Noa inspects the condition of the Grandcypher and reports that although it cannot fly in its present state, there is still hope. The crew head for the isle of Golonzo in the hopes of finding a way to repair the grounded Grandcypher.
With (Captain) and the crew on board, the Grandcypher cuts a path through the clear blue skies.
While everyone is on a break, Noa sits alone on the deck, his brows thoroughly furrowed.
Noa: So this is it. The time has finally come…
Lyria: Huh? You've got a grim look on your face, is something bothering you?
Noa: No… Thanks for asking, Lyria. It's just something that can't be helped. Something unavoidable.
Lyria: Oh? What is it?
Rackam: We're in trouble! Is there an island nearby!
Lyria: Wh-what's happened? What's the rush…
Rackam: It's the Grandcypher… We're losing altitude, fast!
Lyria: Are you sure!
Rackam: Hurry! Prepare for emergency landing!
The Grandcypher, with (Captain) and the others on board, makes an emergency landing on a nearby island.
After landing, no matter what Rackam tries, the Grandcypher won't move at all.
Rackam: I give up… I can't get so much of a murmur out of the old girl…
Vyrn: Hey, what's going on! Has the Grandcypher broken down?
Eugen: No, there's nothing wrong with the ship as far as I can see.
Io: Hmm… So it's not broken down, it just won't fly. Is that what you're saying?
Katalina: What could it be? Noa, what do you think?
Noa: Hmm… It seems the Grandcypher won't be taking off for the time being…
Noa: But that doesn't mean the situation is completely hopeless. Everything depends on you guys.
Rosetta: Heehee… Well that goes without saying, doesn't it?
Rackam: Sure. Did you think we were going to just abandon the Grandcypher?
Noa: Heehee… No, the thought didn't cross my mind for even a second.
Noa: Although… Sometimes I'd like to hear you say that you were abandoning it.
Noa: Such a foolish, selfish thing to think, please forgive me.
Eugen: Haha! Don't worry, we'll take that as a compliment.
Katalina: And? What can we do to get the Grandcypher moving again?
Noa: Oh… Well, first we should head to Golonzo.
Noa: They should have what we need there…
Vyrn: Of course! That island's famous as a place to bring ships in for repair!
Katalina: Indeed… First let's head for the town that we saw from the air. I'm sure there'll be an airship there that we can hitch a ride on.
(Captain) and the crew catch a ride in the town aboard an airship that's headed straight for Golonzo.
Throughout the trip however, Noa's stern expression persists.
On Waves of Grace: Scene 2
(Captain) and the crew arrive on Golonzo and are about to set about hiring some workers to repair the ship, when Noa tells the crew that they won't be needing any. The crew are led by Noa to an old dock where they encounter the primal beast Mithra once more. According to Noa, the Grandcypher, having served its original purpose, is designed to gradually lose power and sink to the depths. A new covenant is needed with its passengers in order to restore it. To demonstrate their determination, the crew face off against the primal beast Mithra.
Riding aboard another crew's airship, (Captain) and the crew arrive on Golonzo.
Shipwright: What! Don't tell me you guys have crashed your ship again? You're always getting into scrapes, ruining my good work…
Rackam: That's enough from you! Sorry to ask you this, but do you have any spare some workers who could lend us a hand?
Noa: That won't be necessary, Rackam.
Rackam: Huh? What do you mean?
The thing is, we need some guys to help with getting our ship repaired…
Noa: It's OK, just trust me on this one. I want you to come with me.
And with those words, Noa sets off my himself into the town on Golonzo.
Rackam: Hey! Where're you going?
Eugen: Humph… This fella's gonna have to explain himself at some point…
Noa guides them to an old dock.
Vyrn: Huh? Why're we here? What's so special 'bout this place?
Lyria: I can sense… the presence of a primal beast here!
Mithra: (…Rumble whirr whirr…)
Noa: Greetings. It's been a while, hasn't it? We are here today to avail ourselves of your power.
Lyria: Huh? It seems like it's the quiet type, not one to go rampaging…
Noa: You hit the nail on the head there… We'd be in trouble if it were otherwise.
Rackam: Listen, Noa, could you just tell us what it is you have in mind?
Noa: Why, the restoration of the Grandcypher of course.
Vyrn: But without workers to help us, how are we going to get the ship repaired?
Noa: I'm afraid there wouldn't be any point in trying to repair the ship any more.
Noa: The Grandcypher has run out of power, so repairing it would be pointless.
Rackam: What are you saying!
Noa: The Grandcypher no longer has any of the power it uses to levitate remaining within itself.
Noa: Even I can't do anything about that. That's because the ship isn't technically broken.
Noa: You see, the Grandcypher was originally built by the Astrals in order to invade this world.
Noa: Having served its purpose, the airship was designed to sink to the depths once its remaining power was used up.
Lyria: I never realized…
Rackam: Now hold on just a minute! You're saying that the Grandcypher is…
Noa: Yes. That's why I brought you here.
Noa: No matter what repairs are performed, the Grandcypher cannot return to the skies…
Noa: That's why I need all of you to help reincarnate the Grandcypher.
Rackam: What does that mean, exactly?
Noa: You're going to imbue the Grandcypher with a new mission. You who now fly aboard her.
Noa: And when the primal beast Mithra grants you that wish…
Noa: Mithra's absolute power will give the Grandcypher new energy, which will last until the mission you give the ship is complete.
Rackam: I see… So you're saying we make a plea to Mithra here? And then the Grandcypher will fly again?
Noa: Yes. And you will need to promise Mithra that you will never abandon that mission.
Rackam: Huh. So it's as easy as that. How about it, (Captain)?
Vyrn: Too right! That sounds just like our line of work.
Noa: Hehe… I knew you guys would say that.
Noa: Well then, now is the time for you to show your determination to face the skies!
On Waves of Grace: Scene 3
By overcoming the primal beast Mithra, (Captain) and the crew have pledged to reach the sky's edge, no matter what it takes. Noa gives the reborn Grandcypher his shipwright's blessing and, as he extends a hand toward the endless azure sky, the outline of the Grandcypher appears and rushes toward (Captain) and the crew, pulsing with energy.
Mithra: (Rumble grind grind…)
Noa: Now, your covenant with Mithra…
Rackam: Oh yes, the covenant… I'd almost forgotten. We promise to get to the sky's edge, whatever it takes. Right, (Captain)?
Choose: Aboard the Grandcypher.Choose: All together.
- Aboard the Grandcypher.
- All together.
Mithra: (Rumble whirr whirr…)
Io: So… this thing will enable the Grandcypher to fly again?
Noa: Mithra will certainly uphold its side of the bargain. Now, it's my turn.
Noa: I, the shipwright primal beast, do hereby bless the reborn Grandcypher, as it embarks on its new voyage.
Noa: Heehee… Look, up there.
(Captain) and the crew look up to the skies, and, sure enough, the Grandcypher is floating above them.
Vyrn: Wha! It's the Grandcypher…
Noa: Right, the necessary ceremonies are complete. The Grandcypher is now good to go.
Noa: The covenant of your absolute intent with the blessing of a shipwright primal beast has given it new life.
Noa: I'm sure?no, I'm absolutely certain that the Grandcypher will guide you to the sky's edge.
Noa: Heehee… I do hereby guarantee that it will do so.
With those words, Noa laughs contentedly.
Pulsating with its newly replenished energy, the Grandcypher carries on cutting its steady course across the skies.
The Vessel of Wishes
The crew have stayed on Golonzo to continue servicing and inspecting the resurrected Grandcypher. At the dock, the crew are listening to Noa's reflections on the Grandcypher, when suddenly a commotion breaks out in the port. When they hear that some skyfarers are running riot and are about to smash up everyone's ships, they rush to the aid of the shipwrights.
Rackam: All right! We've replenished all of the supplies, we're all set to go!
Noa: Heehee… Everything ship-shape, just how you like it to be, Rackam. I can tell the Grandcypher is pleased too.
Rackam: Hehe! Well it looks like we're going to be flying aboard her for some time to come, so I can't take my hand of the tiller!
By entering into a new covenant with it, (Captain) and the crew have resurrected the Grandcypher.
The crew have stayed on Golonzo in order to inspect and service the revived airship.
Lyria: Heehee… After being revived and cleaned up, the Grandcypher is looking better than ever!
Vyrn: Yeah… Maybe it's the patches and scuffs, but it still doesn't really feel all that "renewed," you know?
Noa: I know what you mean… It would have been nice if its appearance would have also been renewed…
Noa: But I like how Rackam has patched up the old Grandcypher.
Noa: I think even the tracks and scars left by shoddy repair jobs are beautiful, so I'd like him to leave it how it is.
Rackam: Hey, watch it! How can you say "shoddy repairs" with a straight face like that?
Noa: Heehee… I said I liked the shoddy repairs.
Vyrn: Hehe… Noa, you've really warmed up to the Grandcypher haven't you!
Noa: I guess so. For me, the Grandcypher is…
Rackam: What was that? Was that a gunshot just now? over there…
Shipwright: Help! Some skyfarers are attacking the port! They're smashing up everyone's ships!
Noa: That sounds serious… (Captain), we should lend a hand.
The Vessel of Wishes: Scene 2
The skyfarers rampaging in the port are about to smash up the warships and other heavily-armed craft, in order to rid the skies of war. Although Noa shows some sympathy for the skyfarers' claim to righteousness, he points out to them that the important question is not whether the airships should exist, but to what use they are put. His argument falls on deaf ears however, and the crew faces off against the skyfarers.
(Captain) and the crew face off against the skyfarers who were about to start doggedly smashing up the ships in the port.
Rackam: Hey! Stop that! What do you think you're doing!
Noa: We cannot just stand by and let you smash up these ships.
Skyfarer 1: Why you… You think you can save these ships? If you want a fight that badly, we'll give you one!
Noa: What is the meaning of this?
Skyfarer 2: You have some nerve… These are warships, loaded with weapons, we won't stand for it!
Skyfarer 1: Yes, we are on the side of righteousness! For a Sky Realm without wars, we must be rid of these things!
Noa: So in other words…
Noa: You're saying that to rid the skies of fighting, you're going to destroy all warships and any ships that have armaments?
Skyfarer 1: Yes, that's right. Ours is a righteous cause!
Rackam: But that doesn't mean that you have the right to just smash up these airships…
Noa: He's right. Though of course airships have on occasion fanned the flames of war…
Rackam: Hey! Noa! Whose side are you on?
Noa: I too once harbored doubts about the way airships are being used…
Noa: And yet… and yet. When I first came to Golonzo, I met a boy who taught me something.
Noa: Each one of these airships is built so beautifully, with such passion and yearning. An airship itself knows no sin.
Noa: The important question is not whether an airship should exist, but rather, how will the airship be used.
Noa: I think you skyfarers already understand that, do you not?
Skyfarer 1: Enough! Our cause is just! Righteousness is absolutely on our side!
Vyrn: Sheesh… There's just no reasoning with these guys.
Noa: It does seem that way…
Noa: I feel sorry for them. But it seems that to protect these blameless airships, we will need to subdue these skyfarers by force.
The Vessel of Wishes: Scene 3
Having handed the skyfarers over to the port guards, the crew listen to the story of what happened leading up to Noa's first meeting with the young Rackam. Back then Noa was shaken by the thought that the ships he had built had been used in wars that had brought misery to many, and he lost faith in his abilities. At that point he met Rackam, who was still a child then, and it was the young boy's words that convinced Noa that there was a future for him as a shipwright, and his self-belief was restored. Noa smiles as he recalls these memories.
(Captain) and the crew capture the marauding skyfarers and hand them over to the guards.
Lyria: Hey! What you were saying earlier, about the boy you met on Golonzo…
Vyrn: Hehe! You weren't talking about Rackam were you?
Noa: Yes. Just before I first met Rackam, I was doubting the reason for my own existence.
Noa: As a shipwright primal beast I had made lots of ships, and entrusted them to all kinds of people…
Noa: But those ships that I made were being used in the War and in other conflicts. They brought misery to so many people.
Noa: Even while I continued being a shipwright, I started to hate my ship-building, and lost faith in my abilities, my very existence.
Lyria: How awful… But you're not responsible for what happened in the War…
Noa: But if it weren't for my ships, they would've had no way to reach the battlefield. The whole war could've been avoided.
Noa: The Grandcypher was one of those ships.
Noa: It was wrecked in the War, but I'd lost so much faith in my abilities that I couldn't even repair it to my satisfaction.
Noa: That was when I decided to join a crew. We were visiting Golonzo…
Noa: …And I encountered Rackam. He was so tiny back when he was a child, but he still spoke like he had an old head on his shoulders.
Noa: Even though the Grandcypher was just a shipwreck back then, Rackam told me that it was beautiful.
Noa: When I heard that it made me so glad, from the bottom of my heart.
Noa: I believed that one day the Grandcypher would sail through the skies once more, and would this time be used to save people.
Noa: I once again believed that there was a way forward for me… And I decided it was time to go back to being me.
Noa: So that's how I ended up here on Golonzo, waiting for Rackam. I just knew that he'd become the pilot of the Grandcypher.
Vyrn: Of course! So that's why you decided to wait for Rackam!
Lyria: Right! That promise must really have been important to you, Noa.
Noa: It was because Rackam was there that time that I didn't just fade away, and instead became the person you see before you now.
Noa: Rackam… For me, you are irreplaceable.
Rackam: Oh for… I don't think I can listen to much more of this.
Noa turns away slightly, but keeps his eyes on Rackam, and smiles cheerfully.
Out of all the events in a primal beast's long life, it is one chance encounter that Noa is profoundly thankful for.
