Plain damage is non-elemental damage that ignores defense (including Damage cuts). Its damage pop-up appears in a plain white color. It is useful against enemies with very high defense. It is sometimes called true damage, white damage, or non-attribute damage by the international GBF community, but these are unofficial terms.

Most sources of Plain damage don't follow normal damage calculations, either dealing a fixed amount of damage, a percentage of the target's max or current HP (up to an individual damage cap), or depend on a specific condition such as the users current HP. As plain damage falls outside of the elemental system, they are generally unaffected by weaponskills or buffs, though some universal Damage Cap effects (like Ultima Weapon skills) still work.

All forms of turn-based damage are Plain damage, regardless of the source.

Reflected damage (i.e. Repel) is also handled as plain damage, regardless of the element of the original damage. The same goes for any self-inflicted damage from skills. If a characters maximum HP is lowered below their current HP, they will take plain damage to adjust the latter accordingly.

Plain damage is unaffected by effects that change elemental damage types (such as Elemental Switch). Outside of Death's Grace converting turn-based damage into healing, there are no ways of negating or changing instances of this damage type occurring.
