About DEF Down
DEF DownDEF is lowered
reduces Defense of a foe it's applied on, effectively increasing damage dealt by your party.
DEF Down effects together cap at 50%.
Different sides of DEF Down stack additively with each other.
Multiple effects of the same side can't be applied at the same time. Stronger effects will overwrite weaker ones and weaker effects will show "NO EFFECT". Equally strong effect will override the duration (not extend it).

20% DEF DownDEF is lowered
Strength: 20%Duration: 180 seconds. (20%, summon call side) gives a total of 75% DEF Down, but it'll be capped down to a 50% effect. DEF UpDEF is boosted
effects are added to the formula. If a foe with the aforementioned debuffs gained20% DEF UpDEF is boosted
Strength: 20%, it would result in: 75% DEF Down + 20% DEF Up = 55% DEF Down (effect is still capped at 50%).- Damage Cut effects are not part of the DEF Up / DEF Down formula and thus are not part of the 50% cap.
- DEF Down effects applied to characters do not function the same way they do on monsters. Self-inflicted DEF Down effects cap at 99%.[1]

Local status effect can surpass the cap by 10% due to their unique mechanics. Such effects will not stack with each other and only one will apply.
DEF Down Sides
DEF DownDEF is lowered
is the most common type of the DEF Down effect. Within this type there are four different sides that can be told apart based on their sources:- Character skills (including the Main Character's) can be either single-sided or dual-sided*.
- Character charge attacks and summon call effects are the other two stacking sides.
- DEF Down from a weapon's charge attack can be either one of above-mentioned two sides.
DEF DownDEF is lowered
Local status effect Local DEF Down only affects the party that cast it. Debuffs from the same source will override other effects based on strength, regardless of duration.- Turn-based effects such as

Local status effect will end after a certain number of turns has passed. - Permanent effects such as

Local status effect won't expire regardless how many turns or time has passed.

will apply one stack of the effect, up to a certain cap (the strength and cap of the debuff differs by source).
If two or more effects from different sources are applied, they'll add to each other, up until the cap of the corresponding skill. If the cap is already reached, only the debuff duration is refreshed.[2][3]- Example:

's mechanics are a combination of Stackable DEF Down and Elemental DEF Down: it applies up to a certain cap, and lowers DEF only for one element at a time.
* Single-sided and dual-sided are community-made terms made for easier debuff classification. There is no in-game text differentiation.
